Earlier today Kevin posted speculation about Martin Erat that makes me want to dropkick babies and snort Comet, so let's attempt to wash that away with a more aesthetic report.
The Rangers and Jets have been feeling each other out, with the Rangers looking into acquiring one of Evander Kane, Andrew Ladd, or Blake Wheeler, according to The Fourth Period. From the article:
"According to a source close to the situation, the Rangers have spoken with the Winnipeg Jets about their forwards.
It's believed the Rangers are interested in acquiring one of Evander Kane, Blake Wheeler or Andrew Ladd from the Jets, who are open to offers, but would require a significant package in order to part with any of those players."
They go on to point out that the Jets have been scouting the Rangers recently.
The idea passes the initial "smell test." The Rangers certainly could use a physical, scoring forward to bolster the top-six. Wheeler and Ladd are both 27 while Kane is 22, and all three are signed at least through 2016, so they make sense insofar as the Rangers can't afford to move big assets for a rental.
The Jets are at the bottom of the Central Division, just fired head coach Claude Noel, and are on track to miss the playoffs for the third consecutive season since moving to Winnipeg. It makes sense that they would look to change the structure of their roster and move in a different direction. At the same time, though, Ladd, Wheeler, and Kane are all good, young forwards under contract for a while, and so the Jets have no reason to rush into a deal and take anything less than high value for any of them.
According to the report, the Jets would require proven NHL talent in return, and TFP infers that at least one of the Rangers' young players on the roster would have to be included. Derek Stepan is a doubtful addition as moving him defeats the purpose of bringing in one of those forwards; it's a lateral move at best, and there's no pressing reason to move Stepan. Kreider surely would interest the Jets, but there's no way that Glen Sather moves Kreider unless a truly top commodity like a Patrick Kane or Taylor Hall was bizarrely being offered. Ryan McDonagh is a total non-starter for obvious reasons.
As I see it, that leaves Michael Del Zotto and John Moore as definite options. Carl Hagelin and Derick Brassard are both 25. Do they count as "young roster players" by Winnipeg's standard? I'm not sure. The Rangers would probably have to add a considerable amount to any one of those four guys to make a deal happen. How much more Winnipeg would demand - and whether that amount is worth it to the Rangers - is the big question. At the very least, there is a basis for discussion that makes a trade theoretically plausible and workable.

For those of you that think Kane is coming here in return for our spare parts, think again. A player like Kreider, McD or Stepan would have to go back the other way for sure.
What I could see happening would be getting Ladd without having to give up any of our your studs.
Honestly the trade is okay. I know a lot of people hated DZ but it was blown out of proportion. Hes young, he has issues but what will dZ be like in 10 years. Maybe a cup in Tenn... W that said. Its good to have a cheap, defensive dman, right handed. All needed.
10 power plays a game? Wow thats some average. And from that you want us to score 3 PPG. No team puts up 30pct. 3 ppg may not even guarantee us a win. Bringing in a sniper will change the roster, could change everything. U saw how bringing in 1 sniper changed everyyhing w Nash. You also said maybe wed score 5... doubtful. Pens put up 26 pct or something and they have 2 amazing PP lines. And its not just their PP that creates wins. So, lets be wary of what we wish for. Getting a scorer does not make us into a better scoring team.
I think Girardi may be moved Klein is as good if not better then Him and signed! Conor Allen can come up and play as well as Falk could fill in. I
Think the Rangers may pull of a bigger trade with the Jets.
Evander Kane would be a good addition to the Rangers. he'd fit in with this club and bring some toughness to the forwards.Ladd not so sure about Wheeler also not earthshaking trade news, but Kane would be a good fit and a good bet if the price wasn't too high.Jets are winning under Maurice tho, maybe they're changing their mind.
maybe girardis gone, thats why they got klien. kane for girardi and some other parts and buff moves to forward where he isnt a liability. please god!!!! we just traded for girardi with a pair of balls so he can enjoy the weather in Winnapeg
I just spent a little time on the Preds blog and the reaction is pretty unanimous: they are shocked to lose Klein. Seems like he was the odd man out with both Weber and Jones being RHDs and stars, but most on that (admittedly small sample anecdotal) blog seemed to think of him as a "core" guy.
I think that's good news for us. We need more of those.
What about Setaguchi. Decent winger and is a UFA next year. Probably get him for close to nothing!!!!
From the one and only comment on the CBS report on the trade:
"Anyone who calls Klein a good defensive guy hasn't spent much time watching the Preds play. His best value is when he joins the rush. As far as defense goes, he gives the puck away in his own zone at least every other game. I would have been happy to see them send Klein down. To get something for him? GREAT deal!!!
Now, we only have to watch Ekholm cough up the puck.
Everyone has to look at the Preds blog Jack posted below. The fans LOVE KLEIN! They are all really pissed.
This trade makes (del) zero sense. Trade a 23 year old with massive potential for a 29 year old in the first year of a 5 yr contract who has 1 G and 2 A and is -11 on the year? WTF. Bring up Allen or Falk or even McIlrath and just sit DZ for awhile. I think DZ took a lot of shit on this blog. I think Girardi should go as well as Boyle. Boyle is just as bad as Pyatt.
For you guys interested in Preds fans take on the trade: http://www.ontheforecheck.com/2014/1/22/5335154/kevin-klein-trade-nashville-predators-new-york-rangers
That guy was money in a Fish Called Wanda!! At least the Rangers got an NHL defenseman back. This guy looks like a slight upgrade to Falk. All those posting his fights, take it easy. He doesn't seem like some big time brawler. He's got 21 PIM on the year, including 3 fights. Doesn't sound like he plays with a tremendous edge, but then again I know nothing about this guy. He did play good minutes for Nashville though, so that's definitely a plus!! Not sure why Nashville made the deal since they already have Webber and Jones? Well, I guess Brian McDonagh just because the official offensive defenseman of the NY Rangers...as well as their shut down guy...all hail Bob Gainey!!!!!
Purely on the fighting front. He's another middleweight and while he doesn't put much weight behind his punches, he still manages to throw himself off-balance. On the plus side, looks like he doesn't take any shit and is nasty around the crease.
i hope shea weber taought him a thing or two. i like that hes a righty. i like that he can throw 'em. i dont like his offense. i dont like his money all that much. i just hope dz doesnt light it up now. we will see. atleast hes on a team that wont hurt us.
who knows klein might be good but i thought we could have gotten a little more for dz...kinda disappointed...
The forwards have been playing with some grit and passion since the Carcillo acquisition. Let's hope this infuses the same mean streak into the D-Corps.
agreed but Kane is the only player of the bunch worth anything
Seriously though, the kid plays with some snarl. I'd like to get him to add to the extra level of aggression to the team.
We're Kane and a dynamic first line center like Stamkos, Toews or Tavares away from the cup. I guess we could use a bruiser, but if everyone on the team was tough enough on their own, it's less necessary.
I particularly love the quotes of him as a team-first/willing to do anything for his teammates type player. The rangers have some solid d. But they don't have an outspoken, meat and potatoes type guy like this
Ya, but that blog you posted had the exact opposite reactions. Everyone was pissed to see him go.
Give the dude a chance, because the truth is, few of us know much about him, but a number of the fans who do seem to love him.
Patience, padawan, patience.
awesome... thanks Jack!
I know but try and find a vid of him doing anything else lol.
Don't think Sather is done tweaking. After watching Matt Martin last night, would love him on our 4th line
Shot in the dark ... Think this trade was also done in case Girardi doesn't get signed and leaves as free agent?
yeah, I remember this. Dorsett went after him for dumping Boyle.
Watch how Staal undresses him with a bounce and chase move off the boards.
@johnAMIRANTESrug There is no doubt that DZ has more potential than Klein. But I'll give up the peaks and valleys for a solid, right-handed D who shows up to play and fight for his team every night.
Quote from blog: "I’m really not too sure about this. Nothing against MDZ, but Klein was our best PK person of all. Plus he was one of the classiest guys and most popular locker room guys.
"You will be missed. I was a “Klein-Lover” even when most were down on him. Having said that, I believe it is the new found faith in Ryan Ellis that led to this move. I was VERY DOWN on Ellis, but he has begun to win me over. That leaves Shea, Seth, and Ellis as right handed shots. Thus the ability to move someone. Klein was the odd-man out, but he will be missed. His ability to play a shut down game without taking penalties is definitely under appreciated. Having said that, we got 5 years younger and still control the player since he is anRFA. If we like him, we keep him, if we don’t he is gone and we can use the Klein money elsewhere. I was hoping that Klein could be part of a package for a forward, but you have to take what you can get.
@GiveGartneraCup "Klein may be under appreciated with his PK work and shutdown role, but he is also a right-handed defensemen, which the Preds have a lot of. "
ANOTHER QUOTE: "Klein takes like zero penalty minutes, defensively responsible, big body. Occasional offensive greatness (look for a YouTube of him breaking away on Jimmy Howard in the playoffs a couple of years ago). Been with the Preds for a looooong time. Never loses a fight."
Lol. Yeah. He would be a great addition. I love that type of guy.
I think once we get Dorsett back we'll have a really gritty 4th line. Boyle centering Carcillo and Dors. I like what Dom Moore brings but I think this trade makes it evident that the Rangers Brass see the need for toughness
