Over at TSN, Pierre LeBrun of ESPN.com reports that while the Anaheim Ducks are likely going to be a player for Dan Girardi at the trade deadline, the Rangers have been telling teams they're not moving him and are focused on re-signing the defenseman.
LeBrun adds that the Rangers are confident at this point that those negotiations will possibly lead to a new deal.
...if you're a Girardi fan, you're probably pretty excited about this news. Well let me play the part of Mr. Buzzkill and ask you why the Rangers might be informing potential suitors that he's not available? Could it be to raise his trade value? Negotiating 101 folks.
...Sather's done a lot wrong during his tenure as Rangers GM, but his trade game is on point. Expect him to use every tactic in the book to get the biggest return as possible for Girardi.
LeBrun also notes that negotiations with Ryan Callahan are not as far down the road as Girardi's, and he questions whether the Rangers can get both contracts done. He feels that Girardi is more likely to return.
...as I said yesterday, if Callahan and Girardi are realistic about the terms of a new contract, then they'll both be back. If they're interested in one last huge pay day, I'm sure Sather will be more than happy to accommodate the duo by trading them to another market which would allow them to test free agency this offseason.
...my gut says they'll both be back. Unfortunately, my gut is always wrong, so start writing your good byes Rangers fans.
As much as our team toughness has gotten better since the beginning of the season, I don't think its there yet. G is one of the main culprits. Too soft, seems uncomfortable with confrontation and lets guys like Kreider fight his battles. He didn't use to be this soft but now he is, we have to face it. Time to move him on. Give me McQuaid any day of the week.
Trade them both for first and second round picks each. Then hope their wives love the city enough that they force them to resign with the rangers cheap. That would be sick! Lol!
So your telling me if callahan decides he wants to explore his options and asks for a big raise, you dont trade him and risk losing him to free agency?
Lol whoever thinks its a good time to move callahan obviously doesnt know about whst he does for this team and why they made him captain. Richards will be gone soon enough hes gdtting older callahan is still young and still a leader on and off the ice that would be a horrible decision
I think they know they are going to resign Cally no matter what so they are concentrating on Girardi before the deadline to see what he wants and then decide to trade him or not.
To get sarcastic, lets say we sign all the popular Rangers and sort of have a good ol' boys team.We won't ever be an SC contender, but we'll have lovable players.
If the Rangers keep winning, we're not trading anyone. Best case scenario is that we make the playoffs, resign Cally and Girardi and buyout Richards to make room for them under the cap.
Watching some of these guys play is like watching the wizard of Oz
Cowardly lion - Boyle
Scare crow (no brain) - DeL Zero or Stepan
Tin man(no heart) - Girardi
Wizard of OZ - Zuc
I was thinking last night that we’re down to about 10 games a year when Captain Cally is Captain Cally. Where did the smashing hits go? You have to love guys that totally sacrifice their bodies for the love of the game and we love him. The only problem is that his shelf life is about to expire and he’s going in the sale bin.
One of your worst headlines ever Kevin.! Cally is a big part of this Rangers team whether you like to admit it or not. Just can't believe I'm seeing this taken so lightly from most fans on here.. I'll be in a state of mourning and probably stop watching Rangers Hockey for awhile.. KEEP CALLY!
Both will be back. Though I would much rather see Girardi go at this point than Cally. Callahan will be paid because he is a fan favorite, not to mention that he is one of the hardest working guys we have. Yes he is a bit injury prone but my guess is that in this new system he will break less bones. I understand that he will still play his game and that does put him at risk but in a more offensive system he is less at risk. You don't trade away your 27/28 year old captain when he is a reliable workhorse with a chip on his shoulder. The guy is too valuable. And while I do admit Girardi has had his first setback as far as this season goes, he is a good solid, shut down guy. Who do you think we are going to replace a guy like that with? Why do you think McD has the opportunity to spring into the play whenever he feels like it? Because Girardi is covering. I think he will turn it around. Knee-jerk Sather needs to cool his shit and let this team have a chance to gel.
all this trade talk wen theyre finally starting to gel...sometimes the best trade is the one that you don't make.we have goaltending and talent,we just need to muscle up against the tough teams.
cally's got heart. he's been a beast. but his body is broken down. best years behind him. 3rd line grinder at best that's somehow seen as a top 6 wing. sell high here. has scott gomez written all over the second half of his career.
It just makes no sense to me. Callahan gets back and they are on a tear winning games. Cally being a big part of that with 5 points in his last 7 games. They want to trade that away when they are in a playoff spot? I'm just getting so tired of these articles about trading some of their key guys, and thinkig you will get a better return. Does not always happen that way. I'm just so annoyed now have to read this and get depressed after a win last night. All I know is a lot of fans are not going to be happy about this if they don't resign him and especially trade him, when he has been playing very well since being back.
Callahan has always been a favorite of mine on the Rangers, but I don't lose any sleep trading him if they get a good return. He has a good shot, hustles, has intangibles, makes plays skates- all kinds of nice stuff but he isn't Alex Ovechkin Sidney Crosby Jonathan Toews so there is not a lot of sleep lost if we cut bait and trade him for decent picks and prospects. As far as first round fails- we are about average with Krieder being the most awe inspiring pick - spectacular.JT Miller as well was a pretty good pick at 15 compared to the players available at that spot
I hope your gut is right. If they are getting close to a contract with both of them there should be no issues and these guys should be re-signed. I just find it very hard for them to trade their heart and soul player when they are in a playoff contention.
Not if they have no intention on re signing or if they ask for a ridiculous contract, you also have to take in consideration callahan is hurt alot also, so why let them walk at the end of the year when you can possibly get something for them
If they played with half the passion in your posts we would be a lock for the cup
Stepan shd be dropped to third line btwn hags and cally and have to work his way back up
Richards replace b/c the brassard line is like a boss
Agreed people have their heads up their asses loving inconsistent soft ass players and unproductive players. I am NY Rangers fan...... and I want cups. Not loveable players. Or who sells more jersey s. Fuck that
We are not winning a cup. We won't even get out of the first round with our current roster...... let alone a SC berth
@mando24179 You're absolutely entitled to your own opinion. But you're not watching the same games that I am. Girardi may be slow and he may be struggling this year (although he's played better recently) but to say he has no heart either makes you an idiot or desperate for someone to fit the role in your shitty analogy. The dude plays his heart out every night. He's been much more mistake-prone this year, no doubt. But he plays his balls off and his heart out every night. Stop stretching to try to make the joke work.
Out of his mind? Why you have an interest in signing him at 6 million plus per year over 4-6 years? No thanks not to play 40-50 games a season.
Torts, sure. Gillis, not a chance. Both players are better that their counterparts.
@bk59 He is not showing signs of slowing down, and had been hitting hard sine back fro the knee injury.
I agree with this. It's like the title just makes me confused that they are going to trade away one of their biggest assets who has been playing very well since being back. Why is even Callahan talked about as trade bait, he has not been made avaliable by the GM, and how can you sell when you are in a playoff spot.
Cally has one of the top selling jerseys in the NHL, and his merchandise sells very well, they are making milions on that, and since this is a business that will be taken into consideration. Look at those Stadium jerseys, why do you think they only have Callahan, Nash, and Lundqvist available? Because they are the biggest sellers.
he is not injury prone!!!! his style of play is what gets him injured but makes him the player he is. If he wants to play out that long term contract he wants to sign . he can NOT play his style anymore which then makes him a fourth liner. thats what I am saying and why we should get as much as possible while he is still healthy and a hot commodity
thats what i have been saying great Ranger in the past but going forward downhill
I am sorry but Zucc is more of a heart and soul player than cally is now (a shell of his old self) I reiterate trade him while his value is still there. Sign Girardi if price is right but let his soft ass game go if he wants too much. Cally doesnt hit any more and can not even put it in a wide open net
I really gotta fucking laugh at u.... idiot? Playes his heart out. Dude u must be smoking crack.... the dude hasn't played a blue collar passionate shift in 2 to 3 yrs. .... let's role down the old it meter since u wanna name call. Cause I don't suck no players dick to defend him......
The dude plays with no fucking passion at all.. zero. Meaning he can't play with heart of he has zero passion.... plays his heart out ok let's go down memory lane since I watch games different
Was that Girardi. Watching Carcullo beat the fuck out of Gabby. I. That Phil game. Or was that some one else.... no it was Girardi so who the fuck8ng idiot Um mm. Hold on. We can. Continue
Another tid bit AV system is a man to man. And if u don't have the skill set and skating ability. U will be exposed. Nightly..... the only reason he doesn't get the blame. As everyone see he is the weak link on that pairing. Is McD bails his ass out..... but wait who's the idiot that doesn't see that. That would be u
On numerous occasions. Players have been challenged bullied in front of Girardi and all he does is skate away..... hey asswipe did u see last night's game...... 1st period he got punked by a rookie and Kreider bailed him out. As Girardi skated away like a pussy. .... then Kreider gets another red wing to jump in and where s Girardi? Skating away. No where on the screen....While Kreider fends off 2 red wings
Playing withe heart. Means playing without fear.... With passion. ... going above and beyond ur skills ur Tallent and abilty....
u claim u see that every night from Girardi. Lmao. Who's the idiot here dude. Staal is a better dman. And so was Sauer
. Nothing like he was 3 yrs ago a blue collar defenseman not a top 2..... he is a top 2 due to default and injury
tell me the last time u ever saw Girardi fight. 2010. In being real the idiot is u my friends...
Truth is truth. .... u can have ur opinion. .. but u name call I'm an idiot. Smh....wake up and be real the dude has sucked. And will decline he has been exposed as an average dman..... who isn't physical. Shouldn't be on a power play. Cause my God he sucks on it..... doesn't clear the crease... ask Hank..... looses more battles than he wins and has become a turn over machine.....and refuses to defend teammates....If that's ur guy dude u have some really low standards....of what playing ur heart out means..... Cally plays his heart out but physically has taken a pounding doing it. ZUCC plays his heart out. .... When I can give me that effort in comparison. .. then till then dude u don't know WTF ur talking bout.... so I will say again the only idiot here is u my friend
To only name a few who are HOF.
... going forward isi better to a player who player reckless with his body.. and some times wind up on the IR. Or get prices that will make us competitive for 5 to 10 yrs
I'd do the later
He's not hitting the same.... He isn't killing penalties as he was on the first unit. And on the power play...... wake up dude.... it's plain as day watch the. Game. And get a dvr Cause ur missing most of it
its not a horrible idea, but it is not going to happen. Glen Sather, and Mr. Dolan are not the type to let a guy walk when the fans like him. Unless hes Brian Leetch. I say keep him. Because if we let him go, Glen is just going to bring him back in five years when he is an aging superstar with a ring.
Have you been even watching he games as of late? He has been one of the top hitters every night creating chances. Zucc is having a rare season, Cally has had multiple consistant seasons prior to this one. Rangers loss if they let him go.
But not like he was before the shoulder surgery. yes thats the past, this is a business you use your head and not your heart. but if we get buffalos first rounder and more its a steal. he is on a downhill spiral, how he made the olympic team this year is crazy over guys left out. we need new blood to go with what we have. we need scoring not another forechecking penaltykiller. we can pick guys up like cally for under3 mm that do what he does. sorry just stating the facts
