Katie Strang at ESPN.com reports that the Rangers have recently had contract talks with Dan Girardi's camp.
Strang does add, however, that the team has not spoken with Ryan Callahan or Anton Stralman lately on their possible extensions.
Strang notes that talks could resume with Callahan once he returns from injury.
...because of the uncertainty on the Rangers blueline with Del Zotto likely to be moved, Staal's eye issues and the unknown of rookies Allen and McIlrath, I think Sather has no choice but to bring both Girardi and Stralman back.
...i understand Girardi has struggled this season, but I'm not sure how much I like having to replace half the defensive corps this offseason knowing Sather's track record on signing free agents.
...the obvious curveball would be if Sather actually can get a top four defenseman in return for Del Zotto (yeah right) or he decides to move Girardi for a top two defenseman. I will never put anything past the Rangers GM at the trade deadline.
...as far as Callahan goes, he is the heart and soul of the Rangers franchise, so despite his tendency to get injured, I would be floored if Sather didn't lock him up for 4-5 years at $5.5M per. Which to me would be in overpayment very similar to Lundqvist.
interesting fact pointed out on the Pens telecast - the Rangers have more SOG then the Pens this year
Why would anyone trade us a top 2 damn for Girardi? If they do its bc they have baggage or their contract sucks. Stralman deserves a 2 yr deal. Consistent stay home dman who gets the job done. Arguably the most consistent dman on team
Girardi doesn't bitch or moan, he is consistant and has been under paid for years, now on other hand he does not stick up for his team mates and is having trouble adjusting to AV's system. Re sign him and stralman and let cally go if he does not take a homer discount and no more than 4-5 yrs. great defences win championships in all sports
no offence (no pun intended) but we should trade Cally while he is still thought of as worth a lot by certain GM's , This is still a business and we want to win, but over 5 million for an oft injured guy who might score 20 goals is crazy, I f he tones his game down ,and stays healthy well guess what, we have a smaller Pyatt, so root with your head and not your heart and maybe we win one.
I dont get most of you guys way of thinking sometimes. Girardi is a ranger, hes a home grown top pair defenseman. Why wouldnt you want him back, guys like this you dont let go. I hope him and Mac stay together and finish their careers here. Why dont you want him back? Hes not out of his prime, the guy is 29 years old. You keep Girardi and Callahan they are not the problem. If we can add some toughness and maybe another scorer we will be where we want to be because we have guys that can score and they will start coming around the second half. Honestly some might disagree but i think you trade Nash, he just doesnt have any heart or push to his game. Trade him for a D and a younger guy that can score
I dont go anything over 5 per for Cally and MAXIMUM 5 years. Injury prone winger, that will start breaking down at 30 at the latest
I have two thoughts on this:
1. Any chance they are talking with Girardi to entice Callahan to sign? No secret those two are friends so if Cally knows G is staying might make him want to re-sign sooner? (No idea if that's even an issue as maybe they already know both want to stay. I've just had this long belief we'll either get both or neither.)
2. I know everyone wants Stralman back. If I remember correctly, he almost didn't re-sign last time cause he was thinking of going back to Sweden for family reasons. Any chance that could happen again? If so, then I definitely think they have to get Girardi locked up as soon as possible cause I agree they can't afford to lose both this summer.
gotta disagree with that. Its not the same as 1994 because there is some semblance of continuity. There are scattered but consistent players moving through our New York Rangers system in a coherent fashion. There is not a vacuum like in 1994.
Good God, I never thought I'd be thankful for Glen Sather as GM of the Rangers but reading some of the comments on this blog over the past few weeks does just that! Seriously, at this point, we would have Cam Talbot as our starting goaltender with Anton Stralman and Ryan McDonagh as our top pair and McIlrath and Allen as our 2nd pair, and we'd have a top line of Zucc, Evander Kane, and Steve Ott, with God knows who else on the other 3 lines. I guess it's a good thing that fans aren't GMs.
Me personally, I'm just glad that the Rangers seem to be sticking to a plan of keeping a core together that they think has a good chance at succeeding. Maybe it won't work out, but going out and getting all new players and trying to get them to gel is EXACTLY what they did after the 1994 core players were gone.
I agree this is a feeling out move to see where G stands and if trading is the best option. Capt America will get a raise and stay I just hope it's not too long a contract with his oft broken body.
PS this candy crush crap sucks ass!!!
@TheNYRBlog stralmam quiet and consistent. Not flashy or talked about much but gets the job done. Rarely do you see him making bad plays
You don't re-sign players that are past their prime.Dan Girardi is a perfect example of this.Better to put someone else in there. Its just a mistake thats all it is,We get who we need but we get someone who isn't playing mediocre.Get rid of him and we can live with the regret because its not going to be long lasting. We will soon find another better cheaper dman .
Think its a real good point by some of the posters already that this could just be to feel out what he's looking for to determine if he gets moved. Sather could also be looking to turn him into a moveable player with more of a return, instead of just being a rental headed in to Free Agency.
NYR has long been a revolving door of players. As long as demands are reasonable, I think there is an indirect value to keeping a core of consistent players in the lockerroom. Hank, Cally, Girardi, Staal have all been mainstays in for the past few years. The fall out from losing Dubinsky and Artie could be weighing on Slats to keep some consistency, as well.
I'm not saying keep Girardi just to keep him, but development and consistency is a component that can attract better Free Agents amd Prospects than cash can.
Top 4 defensemen do not grow on trees. Sign them! Captains like Ryan Callahan do not grow on trees...sign him!
Girardi has shown that he can be a strong defensemen. And Callahan is truly the heart and soul of the team. These two are part of a few core players I think we should keep around. Inevitably we will overpay them. With the cap going up, players will stretch the GM's to the brink. And the GM's won't feel as bad because they have more room to play. It's NYC for gods sake, these players will get more than they are worth. It just comes with the territory.
Why sign Girardi....& then give him a raise on top of it. That kind of thinking is why we are in this mess now... Over paying for player attachment
Far as Cally goes love the guy but he gets hurt alot.... again then u wanna give him a raise? What has he done to merit that other than get hurt the last 3 seasons.....i would rather trade him get some value back...and sign a bigger more physical & productive non injury prone player for 5.5 mill for 4 to 5 yrs
Need a D guy like Girardi back. He's having an off year yes but who isn't these days? Im confident he will bounce back. Don't agree with these huge contracts either though.
@TheNYRBlog The rangers need to rebuild not resign a bunch of old players. This team needs a huge shake up.
@Bring back LangdonI disagree, he is also a top penalty killer, shot blocker and consistently at the top of the team in hits. When you have a guy who can do those things (which you need) he is bound to get hurt. Cally also has a history of returning quickly from injuries. He is also the captain of the tam who leads by example. He has been on track to score 30 goals consistently the last few years (injuries and shortened season prevented it). He is not there strictly to be an Alex Ovechkin like scoring machine. Teams are built on depth and Callahan is the ULTIMATE depth guy. If they are in PO pos at the deadline he will be resigned, 5 years 5.5mil is a reasonable #
still too much
You know what's fun? To browse through a google images search of "Henrk Lundqvist" and try to count how many different Ranger Players you can find playing in front of him. In his 8 years here, i bet you could find over 100 players. The revolving door that is MSG is crazy.
I said it somewhere else, but I'll say it again, and I'm with you 100%. There is indirect value to keeping a core of players together. It shows longevity, development, and confidence of an organzation, and those are the characterisitics that attract players who want to win, as opposed to players who want to get paid.
@gravey94THANK YOU! I've stopped reading many of these blogs just for the simple fact it's so disheartening to watch armchair GMs tear down, then put together a team they created in their fantasy leagues that has no hope of winning anything. There is no doubt a change here and there could be made to help, but nothing good ever came from completely stripping your core.
@JMK8363Is it still happening?
Callahan Is just a good player that.people overrated, that is the problem.Trade him if you can get somebody that can put the puck in the net.
Girardi has looked lost all season and yet again everyone fails to mention. He IS SOFT.. . Stands there as teammates get pummels and does absolutely nothing... He has made as many mistakes as a rookie has all season.... anyone watch our last game. Girardi s turnover cost us the first goal... enough with his BS and dump him....it's time
@JohnScibior They re-signed Lundqvist for seven years, they're not rebuilding.
@JonMuro@Bring back Langdonpk and shot blockers are a dime a dozen see d moore and b boyle which you can have for less than 1 cally. secondly he has NEVER scored 30 goals in his career closest was 29. my point is he is getting older and slower and will not come back from his injuries faster only slower. he is a good player and does hit but he will only slide the older he gets, my point is trade him for all you can get and instead of signing an almost 30 yr old to a 6 yr 6 million dollar contract get a Kane for 6 years and 6 -7 million in his prime. Cally is past his for sure. heart and soul goes so far see b prust. I would take prust at 4 million over cally at 6 imo
@JMK8363Took all the ads off mobile version.
About Girardi To be honest, If he has a comeback to a good level of play I wil be astounded. In any event, you don't sign 29 year olds on potential-you sign them on what they are playng like.
@gravey94People love to use that phrase, "past their prime", when a player struggles for any amount of time. I don't think they know what that phrase means.
@boricua25 The value for impending UFA's has decreased dramatically in the salary cap era. 2nd tier prospects & mid round draft picks at best. Not saying a contending team wouldn't do a bit better at the deadline, but i seriously doubt it.
Dude as of right now we have to see what out there on the market...... Second u have to see what u get back in trades if u do them.... We have an abundance of UfA going into the off season..
U have to have some type of vision and be realistic..I wouldn't be quick to over pay someone...that's why everyone on this board is unhappy with jow they ate playing but at some point u have to hold players accountable as well.... and he is the leadership.
Love Cally but realisticly he is a smaller player who plays extremely physical and is wearing down shown by his injuries and how frequent they come...
@TheNYRBlog run then there going to need NHL ready top 6 forward talent for cally
@TheNYRBlog how much is cally worth on the trade market ? We all know DelScratchi isnt worth much. If the rangers are going for a playoff
you obviously misunderstood I said i'd rather have brandon prust at 4 mill than what cally will get on open mkt at 6 million look at dustin brown as an example. cally like also wears the C fights better and getts a lot less money has scored 30+ goals once and 20+ plus 3x. never hurt and signed for under6 million going forward taking a discount so they could keep key players. bottom line he is not worth 6 mill for 5+ years
@Bring back LangdonExcuse me are you sayng Prust will get 6 mil on the open market?? Are you talking about Brandon Prust...on Montreal...who used t play for the rangers?
ON PAR he never makes it to a full season thats my point! and yes prust as cally will get 6 mill on open mkt and no i would not give him more years if he took 5.5 again my point is he is not worth it. ^ mill is for a 30+ goal scorer 29 one year his best. hows he been doing this year is he on par for 30, maybe hes on par to make 30 over 5 yrs with Buffalo but not with us
@Bring back Langdon lol oh Im sorry he only scored 29 goals in 76 games. In the words of Jim Carey " I was WAY OFF" lol.The year after he had 16 goals in 45 games. The year before he had 23 goals in 60 games. I never said he scored 30, I said he has been on par for 30 every year. Your comparing Callahan to Dom Moore or Bran Boyle? Sorry but no comparison. how is the 28 year old captain of the NY rangers who has been among the team leaders in all stats every single year past his prime exactly? He has only missed like35 games in 3 seasons even with injuries! You wanna pay Prust 4 mil over Cally 5.5 !!?? Sorry but you just lost all credibility.
Go ahead, convince me.
Kane is bigger, yes. He's not better, he's no more physical, and no less injury prone, and he has nowhere near the maturity and leadership qualities of Cally. Oh, and there are 30 NHL teams. Cally has been in the top 60 RW's since 2008, frequently in the top 30. So by definitiion, he is no worse than a top 6 forward.
Cally isn't a top 6 player never was. He is a productive 3 liner. ..... what I said again was for 5.5 million dollars u can sign or get a more bigger faster physical productive non injuru prone player
Oh by the way Evander Kane is a cap hit of 5.5 mill next yr and 4.5 mil this yr.
So to answer ur question Um mm yes u can get one at 5.5 million
I'm not saying to keep Cally at all costs, but saying they should sign a bigger more physical productive non-injury prone player at $5.5M is un-realistic. 1) there are none on the FA market and 2) you really think you'r going to find a top 6 power forward who doesn't get hurt for $5.5M?
Those are all valid points, but here's the basis for the problem the Rangers always have: We attract the wrong Free Agents! We attract the players who want to get paid, not the ones who want to win. Any you can be damn sure that if Sather goes into this offseason with 12 roster spots to fill and $40 Mil in open cap space, he's going to attract the wrong type of player. No decent player who cares about winning wants to sign on with a team of unfilled holes!
At the right price you sign Girardi, you sign Cally, you buy out Richards and then you go into the market looking to sign a real first line center and show him that we're a solid organization that has developed talent and has a core group of leaders in place.
Otherwise 2014-2015 will be Holik, Gomez and Drury all over again.
