Joe Haggerty at Comcast Sports says that despite the Boston Bruins best efforts to fill the void left on defense with the season ending injury to Dennis Seidenberg the options available are very slim.
Haggerty adds that one of the biggest reasons for the lack of top targets is that defensemen such as Dan Girardi have not been made available to be traded by their teams because of their position in the playoff race.
Meanwhile, Bruce Garrioch at the Ottawa Sun reports that the 29-year old Girardi still isn't close to re-signing with the Rangers and could be the next defenseman out the door for the Blueshirts.
...to me, Girardi's future with the Rangers comes down to the terms of the contract negotiations. No matter how inconsistent Girardi's game has been this season, I honestly feel the Rangers want him back, but at what price? As was the case with Lundqvist and is the case with Callahan, there's too much risk in my opinion giving Girardi a long term contract. If you're having issues with Girardi's game now, just imagine him still under contract at the age of 34.
...if the two sides can strike a happy medium in the four year range, I'm 100% down with Girardi coming back, but anything more, as much as I'd hate to see a character guy like him go, would be beyond foolish in the salary cap era. The Klein acquisition would make losing him that much easier.
"There is no progress with the Rangers and Callahan, or Dan Girardi, with “wide gulfs” existing between the Rangers and both players." From the New York Post.... You would have to think unless major strides are made with G before the end of the olympics he will be moved before the deadline... Don't think they hold on to him if they can't realistically sign him (also think it will be a trade with the Avs for Statsny/Oreily/Parentau and Picks/prospects.... some combination of that). On the other hand I think the Rangers hold on to Cally and eventually sign him.
Girardi's value to the Rangers right now is the return you can get for him in a trade. He is on the down side of his career due to the T.O.I. and blocked shots he's sustained. I can only hope Sather is holding out for a big return, but fear he's playing a dangerous game as potential suitors may look elsewhere to fill their needs. As previously mentioned, the Ducks would be ideal as they are loaded with offensive talent (Etem, Smith-Pelly, Rakell). We can then use some of our abundance of offense ( Stepan, Brassard, Hagelin, Dorrsett, Kristo, Fast) to trade for Girardi's replacement (Byfuglien/ Bogosian?)
I think Girardi will be fine until he's around 34. 34 or 35 I would say is the cutoff. I would not sign him past that. I'm more concerned with the dollar amount. Are you paying him as a number 2 guy or a solid number 3.
with all these contracts being talked about... Kind of pisses me off Kreider hasn't gotten a deal. Hope he gets 7 years like Kane.
have to be careful with the heart and soul guys though because letting too many of them walk then you need to find an identity again
They started talking with Zucc: http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/hockey/rangers/rangers-talk-extension-zuccarello-callahan-article-1.1593003
Watching the replay on NHL Network right now with a big smile on my face... 2 thoughts:
1. They should drop the interior temp at MSG to about 17° - the Rangers definitely had an extra jump to their step in the cold!
2. Brian Boyle had a really, really good game.
I really respect and like girardi. But let's be real. There was a reason he wasn't a top round pick...a reason he didn't get called up until 25. A reason he couldn't crack rennys top 4 and a reason he was so successful with torts abd so inconsistent with av. Good player not great player. Needs right scheme. I think he'd do very well in boston. And as we saw with Seguin, Boston' s not afraid to mortgage the future. Would you do Krug for danny g and mcilrath? I think I would it would be nice being the ones getting an amonte for one of our matteaus or getting a zubov for one of our samuelssons for a change lol. Mc for gomez heist not withstanding. I kind of feel bad for redden in that, he probably would really fit well with AV. But was just sooo bad with renny and torts. Have to identify square pegs, round holes. Hiyo!
Anyone see this: http://video.nhl.com/videocenter/console?id=548835&lang=en Pretty incredible interview with Dominic Moore. Sometimes we forget these players that we criticize are people too.
If we have Marc Staal playing at the level we had before his injury-and that is very possible now, if Klein plays well and Stralman can play like he did against the Devils ,we are in good playoff shape. Sather has to make a tough decision about Girardi. We can potentially afford to lose Danny G and still be a serious playoff team. The defence corp has been good and bad n this season but lately they are looking good.If we aren't signing him we have to get a return for a player like him.
I think Bruce Garrioch is a tool, this guy makes up the worst rumors. Why would a team in second place in their division give their to pair defencemen to a rival and to a team that you may potentially play in the playoffs? If sather is going to trade him, I'm sure nothing would be better then screwing the bruins and watching them struggle. Girardi has to be signed for the fact that he is a healthy player who plays hard, not many players in the nhl offer that.
Agreed, Kevin. We just can't keep over paying players, which is a real problem with this organization.
a "character guy"? come on kevin. he is a 29 year old top pair, right handed, shut down d-man who plays 25 mins a game, never gets hurt, and occasionally chips in a goal. how many more of these can you name? sure he makes some mistakes but you can count on one hand the number of d-men who dont. unless slats has a replacement in mind, and there really arent very many, you have to get this done. the salary cap is rising every year, the number of right handed d-men who play his game is not.
I don't understand why anyone should be available when the Rangers are playing very well and are in a playoff spot. You wait to the summer when there is more time to sign these guys rather than risk a roster change and it backfires. Del Zotto is a different case, since he was not fitting into the new system and was constantly criticized by AV. I can't think of anyone on this team that is struggling now or playing bad that they should be moved. Everyone has been playing well.
If someone wants him enough, lets see what we get. obviously that's what sather is doing here. i feel like the D core is actually pretty solid, especially with connor allen and others on their way. package him with a miller, etc, and get what we lack in forwards.... though right now we're looking pretty fit.
@KreiderisTheChosenOne I love Girardi, but i honestly think with the Klein trade that Girardi is expendable. Hes likely to get us a nhl player l a 1st round pick. Definitely worth it. Cally the same. He is going to demand more years and more money. He is showing signs of Chris Drury. I don't want a player we sign for 6 plus years and in 3 hes a shell of himself. He can get a great return from a contender and help us alot. We could possibly trade those two and have 2 great picks and some nhl ready players too. Yah it would suck losing our Captain, but how much can he take. He is already starting to show signs of deteriorating . Even in the game against the debbies he did have a great hit, but for the most part of the game he was doing a dick rash. Cally is the type of player that burns out quick. I want to trade while the stock is high. I say trade the player with the name on the back to get the most out of him while the stock is high. We aren't winning the Cup this year and definitely need some pieces. Ok im on a drunkin ramble. Fukkker out..
Sather will likely give him a Bridge deal which is what he has usually done for those types of players. Even more likely since Kreider's has only been good for a little over half a season so far.
You do have to be careful with heart and soul guys...careful you don't vastly over value them compared to their real market price and future projections vs past accomplishments.
Girardi is not a heart and soul guy......whoever thinks that is on fucking crack....
Cally is a heart and soul guy.....compare the two and see the diffrence
Think Zucc is reaching with the Brad Marchand comparable... No way he gets 4.5 a year.
Completely forgot the Rangers let Eminger walk and brought in Falk and A. Johnson instead.... awesome Sather... awesome
Boyles had an underrated season. Plays in the defensive end all year. Does the dirty work and doesn't say boo about it all year. A real grinder.
why do you think they'd be going after him?
@BringBackBeukeboom no one seems to watch the raplay of the devils first goal..... yes it was on Girardis side as he was once again out of position and then reaching out lazy to try and get puck that went to a devil on a breakaway... this has happened to many times for a guy with his amount of experience... he has got to GO!!!!!
@carylevI said I wanted to keep him. And he is a character guy. Beyond the skill he bring so the table, his presence in the locker room and around the team will be missed if he's traded. We all remember what happened last year when too many guys with his blue collar mentality were shipped out.
Having said that, it would be beyond foolish to sign him to any deal longer than four years.
Problem is the UFAs. You wait til summer, and you can 1) lose them and get nothing in return if they sign elsewhere, and 2), if you do manage to resign them on the open market, they're gonna cost way more than if you signed them before they have that option.
Completely agree. U have to look and see what u can get... or offered.....
If. Anyone is serious about a championship. ... We need to improve our roster......
Our fowards.. are not cup contender material..only Kreider. Nash. Zucc. I will say are. i am being honest. .... We have some soft center men and wingers.... that don't produce enough to be soft
Our defense was once our strength. Now is becoming a liability. Due to in juries. ....... and being soft... i miss sauer.... Staal s injuries. And Girardi s preference to play extremely soft... has hurt us.... We have dmen that are coming up
We have alot lot of chips we can package to become an elite team..... not a wildcard hope to make the playoffs team
If girardi can bring back a treasure trove you trade him as fast as you can
He is a first pair on a good team known for their defense now we all know he is on his downside and a pussy so if sather can work his magic this could be the move which puts us over the top
Not as an RFA. I asked Strang on one of her chat wraps what she thought of Zucc. Said Richards, unsolicited, likened him to a young Martin St. Louis. Same ability to cause havac in the corners and make great passes. Where did you hear he was asking for 4.5/per????
Notice he really used his size yesterday too - I don't get all the hate for him. He's a defensive specialist, and a damn good one (as long as he stays on his feet, uses his body & doesn't try to fight).
A lot of rumors he is being moved... And I never wanted him gone anyway. At 4 million per year he is a very nice and cap friendly player. On second thought I wouldn't give Girardi up for him.
My thing is he's already too slow and not terribly physical. A plus thirty girardi will be even slower and still not physical. He'd be like a less offensively talented Rosenthal. I don't think anyone wants to pay 4 mil /year for that.
@Kevin DeLury @carylev we can have someone else be the guy in the locker room send this scrub packing.... its palin as day to anyone who is being realistic and honest that Girardis is horrendous....checlk the replay of the devils first goal and see who was the ranger who allowed it.. yup u guessed it Girardi and his lazy out of position ass as always and McD scating back to cover his mistakes as usual/// lets stop the charade with Girardi he fucking sucks
That would be the prudent thing to do. ..u trade from strength.....and get more. Rather than. Trade from weakness and get less....
look at the replay of the devils first goal. ... and see what Girardi was doing and how he reacted
that caused a devil to have a breakaway. And scored. ..... the guy really is horrendous...
that's been happening for about 2 yrs now and is only gonna get worst....
Trade that sOB
I think Zucc will be looking for length more than size and will want a 3-4yr deal minimum but with again take a home team discount. 4yrs 3-3.5 would be a steal!!!
Parenteu is a top 6, especially on a team like the rangers. He is very effective on the power play, has great vison, and has put up strong numbers depsite losing Tavares as a linemate.
Nevertheless, he is 30 years old, he is having a down year, and the rangers lines are already clicking.
If we let Girardi go, we need to have an nhl ready dman in return, coupled with a first round pick and maybe a mid range prospect/ third rounder.
I don't know Paranteau's game. If he has some grit to it, maybe? But where do you put him? He's not a fourth liner... He's not a top-6. I think if you are going to upgrade the offense you have to go for a big timer. Trade some roster pieces for a Kane and bring Miller in to fill the void.
Agree completely. But he is certainly a serviceable pro. So this is assuming theyd get a solid nhl top 4 back in return...
@BringBackBeukeboom I agree... there is this love affair here with him like he is a Norris trophy candidate the hell with him.... they act like we cant win without him we would be lost with out Girardi... really those that think that really need to go watch another sport or get some therapy
