As we inch closer and closer to the March 5th trade deadline, teams are scouting each other with more frequency.
And the Rangers are no exception as they had scouts in Toronto Saturday night to watch the Maple Leafs face the Montreal Canadiens.
...earlier in the season the Rangers were said to be interested in defensemen Franson and Gardiner, but with how well they've been playing in their own end recently, does anyone really want to mess with the blueline? And as much as Del Zotto is a liability defensively, neither of those Leaf defensemen are upgrades.
...the Leafs are rumored to be shopping 23-year old Nazem Kadri. He's regressed a bit this season, but did put up 44 points in 48 games as a 22-year old last season. Nothing wrong with obtaining youth.
...the only name I've seen on the Canadiens in trade rumors is Pacioretty, but he has 21 goals in 40 games this season, so I doubt he's truly available. Although, we are talking about the Canadiens here, so maybe Sather can somehow get them to agree to a Del Zotto for PK Subban straight up trade. lol
The Rangers are not only scouting, they're also being scouted as Katie Strang at ESPN.com reports that the San Jose Sharks had two scouts on hand at MSG last night.
Strang also regurgitates the Rangers past interest in 37-year old Dan Boyle and says they would likely still be intrigued.
...Boyle, while not the same offensive threat as in the past, would give the Rangers an element on the blueline and the power play they are lacking right now. Having said that, the Rangers are boasting a pretty sick power play these days and I'd hate to mess with the current chemistry they have right now.
...one wild card on the Sharks is Joe Thornton. He's had past success with Nash and brings a veteran presence to the lineup. The only way I'd endorse this move is if I truly felt the Rangers had a chance to make a run. Assuming it wouldn't take more than some picks and a prospect to get him. He's in final year of his contract that pays him $7M this season. He does have a no movement clause, so I'm not sure he's accept a trade to a team that is so soft.
So, now that we've talked about who the Rangers would be interested in, let's take a look at who on the Blueshirts roster might actually be available in return.
Larry Brooks at the New York Post wonders with the Rangers log jam of speed, if Carl Hagelin could be on the block in an effort to add some size.
...it's no secret that for the Rangers to make some noise, if they're lucky enough to get into the playoffs, they're eventually going to have to go through Boston. And right now, while they're toughness has been bolstered by the acquisition of Carcillo, it's not nearly enough. Obviously, I'd have to see who the player coming back would be, but Hagelin definitely seems like a player Sather might dangle.
...another player who could be available is Boyle. He's definitely seen his ice time and role decrease recently and with Dorsett expected back soon he could be the odd man out. He'd make a nice veteran presence with faceoff and penalty kill ability for any contender.
Would like to see the rangers get tougher at center......stepan, brassard, richards, moore.....eesh......Zack Smith with Ottawa has 9 goals right now and can hold his own.....would be a good add.....and Hagelin could go the other way to help Ottawa generate some offense....a Carcillo, Smith, Dorsett crash line that can still create a bit of O would be great.
Why would the Sharks trade Thornton when they are legit Cup contenders? Also .. Doesn't Thornton have a terrible track record in the playoffs?
We all want to get tough enough to beat boston. But what if nash with thorton make boston look like slow bullies? What if thorton makes us the measuring stick in the metropolitan division?! I dont want to sound like i have glazed eyes but nobody thought crosby would make a difference when the devils defined the toughness in our division. His skill made that team scarier than boston any day!
I think Evander Kane would be the best addition to this lineup; he would fit in well with AVs system, is young enough(22)...If there was only a way of getting him without giving up to much
It would be a huge mistake to trade Hags. It's enough that Cally should be traded.Hags would not bring enough return to make up for his loss.Simple as that.Huge mistake.
These rumors are all garbage in my opinion. Glen Sather loves Carl Hagelin. Hagelin is not going anywhere. I think Sather has learned his lesson signing old players and Russian players. I think the rangers are listening to offers more then anything. This team is playing well and is going to only get better, but not by giving away your fastest player. Del zotto might not even get moved anymore now that the team is winning. By the end of the season the rangers will be in the top 3 in my estimation with Boston and Pittsburgh in the conference. We have a lot of young talent coming up and we are going to be better. Patience is key, unless you can package Del Zotto, Faulk, Pouliot and maybe Boyle for something really good, then ok. But I don't see Hagelin or any good prospect to go for a rental player.
Is there any truth to this rumor of DZ, Hrivik, and Borque as an opening to a trade for Oreily after the 28th of February? Because if there is I jump on that in a second... even if we don't have anywhere to put him. When we buy out Richards it will be nice to have 3 talented young centers under contract.
The Sharks are a contender. They're not moving Thornton. He's supposedly very close to an extension with the Sharks, anyway. I think it's more likely that the Sharks would buy from us than the other way around.
Thornton is producing out west, sure, but what happens when the Rangers sign old men for millions upon millions of dollars?
@TruBluEspActually, the reason I thought there would be a slim chance of him being available was because of his terrible track record in San Jose. Figured they might want to look in another direction.
SO over old dudes on the Rangers. What if Nash gets his eggs scrambled and we then have to look at stranger Jumbo Joe for a replacement leadership/goal scoring role? No thanks.
@Rangeranger .............Precisely RangerRanger! You do see the light! The Stanley Cup goes through BOSTON.... and frankly, they will beat the snot out of us, even with Carcillo, who is ONLY one guy.... we need either McGrattan or Bordeleau.... I wouldn't mind CHRIS NEIL either....
@Snot-Bubbler Snot.... have no fear.... Sather is not doing anything.... yet.... the fans are conjuring up ideas for the hell of it... I, for one, don't think we should trade for OLD AGING STARS.... seems that Sather loves to do that. Maybe because he cannot pronounce the current players names because they have hard to pronounce European names, he cannot even identify them!!!! Who the hell knows....
problem is it would probably take more to acquire Evander Kane than Andrew Ladd
@jvr JVR, although we disagree on many things, getting KANE in a Rangers uniform is a sensible move.... getting Thornton or D Boyle to New York is ludicrous.... why would we mortgage our future for two old, warriors whose best days are BEHIND THEM??? Kane, on the other hand, has upside and even if he screwed up in New York, the potential is there and we could likely unload him for greener pastures... whereas Boyle and Thornton would end their career in the New York Rangers retirement home!!!!
@fs2020 Best thought on here is trade Boyle, who has one less testicle anyway, for a true heavyweight, or a gritty forward... I like the idea of Del Zotto for Neil... Neil would look great in our colors.... We need him... Neil reminds me of CHRIS NILAN!!!!!
@fs2020 FS..... How about Hags for P.K Subban? Is that a mistake? lols
@DominickAndreula Sather is like a 7 year old bully who is spoiled and badly mannered.... can't believe he is getting paid millions and acting like a child... something IS wrong with our system!!!!
@DominickAndreula Tort's ranting in front of the Calgary dressing room was PATHETIC..... Hey, this is only a f-cking game... Obviously Tortorella has no kids, because if he did and they saw his behavior.... He should be ASHAMED of himself.... an utter disgrace for an adult making millions of dollars to be doing... especially on national TV.... what a joke. Glad we jettisoned him away from New York... shoot him off to Mars next...
@DominickAndreula DAN BOYLE???!!!! Isn't one Boyle enough?!!! And the guy is 37 years old... why not bring back 65 year old Guy LaFleur??!! Katie Strange you are really STRANGE... I suggest you consult your crystal ball or stop multi tasking when you hear rumors like this... you are totally getting the signals wrong... but then again.... lols
just saw that... say what you want, but at a crucial time in the season for every team besides Pittsburgh what an idiot this guy is. Imagine AV being suspended and away from the team for 15 days in the midst of this hot streak. It would be incredibly detrimental to our success. I like Torts but this was idiotic
Wow. I think I floated that deal (along with Patrick Bordeleau coming our way and maybe some mid round picks going back & forth) On the MDZ Trade thread. SO yeah, Im in favor.
@KreiderisTheChosenOne I 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th that. Oreily would give us some great young talent plus finally get rid of DZ. I still am 50/50 on DZ. I can see him moving to another team and just being a late blossom. Then in 3-4 years you see this guy put up 50-60 plus points every year. I would hate to see that backfire. Doubtfull though. Seems any rumors that we know of always change the last 3 weeks or so before the trade deadline.. Basically wit slats we never know what will happen. Do we get slats the magician or the one who gives away numerous draft picks for a rental we have no chance of signing?
@Herman_NYRBlog Thornton??!! Guys, what are we smoking here??!! Seems like some people on this blog have the throwback Sather attitude of getting oldie but goodies.... where is the future in a guy like Thornton? D Boyle?! Are we reminiscing too much??????
While I agree that Sharks have less than 1% chance of moving him, they're always contenders and he's yet to help them get over the hump.
Also, why would Strang mention moving Dan Boyle? While not as important as Thornton he's still a big piece.
@_Jack Jack..... thank you for one of the few "sensible" posts on this thread.....
I don't think that's what RangerRanger was saying. Unless I misread. He was saying skill like Joe Thornton will negate the Bruins toughness. Honestly I do think the Rangers could get tougher but McGrattan is not the answer. He can't play. All of the Bruins tough guys actually contribute outside of fighting. Not to mention AV would not play a guy like McGrattan regularly, if at all. Neil is a different story because he can play.
@Rangeranger How about adding McGrattan + C Neil? Then, let's go play the Bruins.
@JoeyKocur@fs2020I doubt that P.K. would be offered for Hags but if it were it would be something I would consider apples and oranges.I'sg ofor Subban b/c we need another good D but the loss it would bring to the energy of the offence would be staggering and Hags hasn't reached what I think is possible for him-the next level of offence.
@JoeyKocur He has kids and he's a fervent individual.
@Herman_NYRBlog Guys! Girls! Thornton.... D Boyle..... TOO OLD!!!! What is the matter with you??!!! Don't be so damn nostalgic, lols! ;-)
Exactly my point wallace! And i agree that the rangers can get tougher. Im am just saying toughness is not always the best solution. What if you get these guys, we stop scoring, and the new tough guys are not utilized correctly? Whereas, a great scorer in an offensive sytem might circumvent another team's toughness and make them "play to us".
@DominickAndreula @JoeyKocur @jvr Yes, yes.... remember Sather traded for half the championship Oilers team? That deal was successful back in 1994.... Sather seems wedded to that formula... I just grimace thinking about deals such as Wade "over the hill" Redden... voted in his prime as THE BEST Ottawa defenseman ever... even over Karlsson..... imagine, getting "grandpa" Wade when he was over the hill, YET paying top dollar....
