Any concerns that Rangers fans might have had about the Blueshirts getting caught up in the majestry of the Stadium Series and forgetting about the two very important points were put to rest when Ryan Callahan did this to Bryce Salvador in the first minute of the game...
And it didn't end there as two minutes later Ryan McDonagh sent another message by sending Travis Zajac into the Devils bench with a thunderous hit...
That physical play became infectious and even directly led to some offense as Anton Stralman's hit at the Rangers blueline on Andy Greene turned into this...
Damn, let's take a look at that hit again courtesy of reader DP Snotty...
...so wait, the Rangers set a physical tone and they win? Funny how that works. Opened up the ice and gave some of the Rangers skill players who had been struggling to score recently the confidence to do their thing.
...after what I witnessed earlier this season, not in my wildest dreams did I expect this team to be able to play that kind of tough, intimidating game. Made it all the more enjoyable that it came against the Devils.
...can only hope this becomes the norm with the Rangers, not the exception.
Subtle, but smart move by Callahan, too, watch him use his right hand to turn Salvador and make sure it wasn't seen as a "hit from behind" rom an official. I'm convinced more and more players know that if they can get the opportunity to go head first at the boards that they'll earn their team a PP. Nice work by Cally not letting that happen.More players need to learn that in the 5-10 foot window from the boards you have to keep the player upright like Cally did right there.
I know it doesn’t show up here but a nod has to go to Klein. We’re seeing some competition for the top four spots and guys have to step up.
Nice post, Kevin (thanks for the nod). I actually missed Cally's hit - what school did Eddie go to ("two pairs of 24s")? I'll just chalk it up to brain freeze…
Zajac was a dick after that hit. Somebody should have at least given him a facewash to wipe the smile off his face after he tried to break McDonagh's neck.
Yeah. Funny how that works. Sort of like, the more pucks you direct to the net, the more likely you're going to score. Hockey really isn't all that complicated, but we sure make it so at times.
other than 80% of the first period, yesterday's game was a blast! I hope they carry this into Wednesday and then let this catapult them the rest of the season.
@TheNYRBlog need to duplicate this on Wednesday. The (last place) Islanders have had our number this season.
@TheNYRBlog you know if they are replaying the game anywhere?
@TheNYRBlog that and mcdonaghs hit on zajac
@TheNYRBlog While was a big hit....Cally was very quiet the rest of the way
Stralman played like a boss. That hit was incredible
@Wallace1 I realized that to it looked intentional by Zajac, Hell, he even smiled at the end. That could of hurt Mcdonagh!
@Wallace1That was scary for sure. McD could have easily caught a skate blade to the face.
@sensiblemadman They better, I'll be at the game!
on nbc sports and they tend to replay game
3PM on NHL network I believe.
@MattyMays Sorry, I don't.
@madsportsnyc@TheNYRBlog He had a primary assist on Hags goal, touching up the puck and getting it open for Hags while checking a Devil. As per his offense, considering his injuries and him not being on the PP it's been pretty solid coming back. He needs to get back on the PP, AV has not taken him off because he was not playing well, he got hurt, PP was clicking so did not want to change anything. Right now the PP has gotten a little stale, 1 for 22 chances (Excluding the 5 on 3's). I'd rather have Cally on that Pouliot. Cally can crash the net, but also fore-check and play the points if needed.
@madsportsnyc He set the table, but yes Rangers need more from him. Especially on offense.
@KreiderisTheChosenOne Doc is biased against the Rangers no doubt in my mind!
@TheNYRBlog I’ll be there too!
@TheNYRBlog the line plays well. Just need him to play better. I think his offensive numbers hurt more due to no more power play time.
@sensiblemadman I'm assuming it'll be nuts, but we'll try to meet up.
