As I said in my game recap last night, despite how horrific the Rangers have looked this season, I'm not ready to blow this team up.
There's still plenty of talent on the roster, who, in my opinion, just need a jump start. Brad Richards has even admitted that the climate on and off the ice has become too comfortable.
This is eerily reminiscent of the underachieving 2006-07 team who was hover around .500 and on the outside of the playoff bubble looking in despite a roster boasting such players as Jaromir Jagr, Brandon Shanahan, Michael Nylander and Martin Straka.
And ONE trade completely turned that team's fortunes around. It was the acquisition of Sean Avery. He brought a sense of arrogance and passion that Rangers team wasn't capable of generating on their own. And the result? A more passionate team and MSG crowd, which led to a Eastern Conference Semi-Finals run where they were done in by Chris Drury's heroics and Marek Malik's turnovers.
So, is a trade like that out there for this Rangers team? Is there a move that can spark this emotionless group to reach their potential? I think there is.
The Rangers need to look no further than their in-state neighbor to the north, the Buffalo Sabres. They have two guys on their roster that could turn this season around. Matt Moulson and Steve Ott.
Both of these players bring a lunch pail, blue collar mentality that is sorely lacking on the Rangers and would be embraced by Blueshirt Nation. Plus they're actually pretty decent hockey players.
Matt Moulson is a perennial 30-goal scorer, who has somehow put up 7g, 10a since being traded to an awful Sabres team. You know, the same amount of goals Nash has scored this season on a much better team. He does the dirty work and the little things a team needs to win. Just ask John Tavares how much the Islanders miss him.
Meanwhile, Ott brings that sandpaper we're all begging for (and now desperately need with the Derek Dorsett injury), plus he'll have no problem standing up for teammates, which this current team seems incapable of doing. He also has the ability to put up points as proven by past 30 point seasons.
Both are in the final year of their contracts, so if it doesn't workout, their salaries (a combined $6M per year cap hit) won't handcuff the Rangers for years to come. However, I'd highly recommend the Rangers work on an extension with the 30-year old Moulson as soon as possible.
With the Sabres in rebuild mode, I don't think it'll take more than a draft pick, maybe a young roster player like John Moore or Derrick Brassard as well as an expiring contract (Boyle?) to get a deal done.
As constructed, this team is going nowhere fast. But I really do believe this trade would put the Rangers franchise in a better position moving forward than if they decided to revamp the entire roster.
I mean seriously, do you honest trust Sather to rebuild the team correctly? I know I don't.
The Rangers are hanging by their balls in the worst division in the NHL. If the Rangers were in the west, we would be talking about golf already. This team has fallen apart, even with a boost of Ott and Moulson, they will possibly sneak in and get their asses handed to them in a first round sweep.
There is disconnection and dysfunction in the locker room. Nobody sticking up for one another, not sure where their futures are headed(Staal, Cally, Richards)...heard something about hank calling out the Dman last game in a post game interview, a coach worried about his stock futures in gum.... I think instead of giving out the Broadway hat every game, they should just give it to Zucc and hand out the Broadway tampon to the biggest p$$y on the team that night.
Everyone focused on Buffalo, not sure if they shouldn't see what Ottowa would ask for Neil. He can PLAY and enforce. As an older player, not sure he would take a big return.
http://youtu.be/iIlLbJHKw8M Say what you want about Torts Scotty, at least they had an Identity..
Did I say I wanted them back Bob? I hated the coach and half the squad. But the point I was making was that the core of that team - which I liked for the most part (DZ) - was made up of guys drafted during the rebuilding.
Not for nothing Scotty Hockey, that ECFs team did not do anything that year to make you happy..you bitched & complained about them..I argued with you..now "YOU" want them back???
i agree that ryan c. in order for him to be of any help to the rangers he's going to have to be reasonable on his contract demands. i know, you gotta love the way he plays and that it's also the only way he can play to help the rangers but he doesn't do any good by being on the IR making a huge contract. if they can't get him at a reasonable salary, they need to trade him. remember, i love how he plays so BOTH sides have to be reasonable.
Team has no backbone. Sad when Sid is jumping players on the rangers.. Nash and Boyle waste of size....
I read in one of the many blogs that the sabers had interest in mdz
Him and brassard for those 2 works
Not sure if the cap space throw in Boyle
Still could use a third pair defenseman who can drop them with the big boys
Mcilrath will not be here for a year or 2 if his knees hold up
Scotty Hockey, Sather needed a cap to force him to rebuild. Where's going to need a miracle this time.
I miss Avery too, but I have to agree that there's no way in hell he'd come back at this point. Time to move on.
@TheNYRBlog I wish Avery was the guy again, too bad Tortorella ruined his career. He would be a great fit in this open system
by the way something has to happen w/ stepan, i know he's better than he's been playing. need a zucc or an andrew shaw that's 6' 4".
i like boyle for ott right off the bat. not that i don't like boyle's play but if ott can play like ott, that would put some sand on the ranger's paper without missing too much of a beat. i like molson but i think you'd have to give up too much and then there's contract issues and i think the isles would get him back to tavares. "there's also cody hodgson. "as far as the sabres taking brassard, they've got some good young centres plus armia coming up so would they really want him. oh well, who knows what going to happen but something needs to bite the rangers asses. how about reg fleming or orland kuttenbach, they were ass biters. i think haley needs to come and be told to play the way he did when he first came up w/ the isles.
Sather started the last rebuild and gave us the core of the team that went to the ECFs. He just then blew it up when he started adding mercenaries and dealing away the kids the organization groomed. I'd have no issue with blowing this ungodly mess up.
This team, from the owner, to management, to the players, is so frustrating, I don't know what to scream about first. The sad part is, that it doesn't matter. All of the fans here, who "bleed blue", who have passion and pride and hurt the most, (more than anyone in the Ranger organization itself who are cashing their paychecks), we are the ones who carry the cross, who endure the pain, who have the smallest voice in rebellion. There's not a whole lot we can do other than to log onto this blog and vent our frustrations, propose our fantasy trades, and keep being the 'smucks' that we are. Why? Because we "Bleed Blue."
@TheNYRBlog The way the current team is composed, I'd be more than happy to see Ott come this way... Wonder if they'd fancy Richards...
@TheNYRBlog give em MDZ moore, brassard n a 1st rounder for Ott Erhoff n moulson! N this tm instantly vaults to #2 in division. Good article
Prust, Avery, Dubi and Torts are NOT coming back, guys. Let's move on and find players who will help this team NOW and not past players/personnel who are In better situations
...and why would torts and avery want to come back? do you think they'd just drop the success they're having right now and just come back to the organization that kicked them out? lol they're gone.
@TheNYRBlog want to make a trade then i would say fuck it Go Big or Go Home and just make a trade for a dominant player we need for scoring
@TheNYRBlog If Dolan wants to make a playoff run then i personaly think this team needs more than moulson and Ott. At this point if they
@TheNYRBlog trade girardi and cally and bring in some young talent and buyout richards and then bring in the piece we need.
@TheNYRBlog All Dolan cares about is the $$$ being made every night at MSG and the misc items being sold. The owner is a joke. We need to
@weregnaloseDid he take last night's RED EYE?......good short term acquisition.........he will make Boyle and others play tougher
@NYRangersXtra your out of your mind! Avery has the disease of me it's all about him!
So trade more heart and soul from this team? Yeah ok. Please stop with the trade Cally posts because they are plain stupid.
@Rwt467 Nasty, dirty, bad mouth, bastard, jerk, shithead..... exactly what our well mannered team needs!!!!
I disagree. If you can get a good deal for Cally, it would make sense, cause 1) Cally is probably going to get a significant raise (my guess 5.5m - 6.5m per year) and 2) he's injury prone and he's probably going to wear fast. so a long term deal is a little iffy with him (and he's gonna get a long term deal on open market if he so chooses).
IMHO, there is only one person I would not trade on this team unless you offered like Crosby or Ovi for him, and that's McD. Everyone else is fair game if the return is right.
Btw...I'm not advocating for a full blowing up of the team. I think there are definitely players you can build around, i.e. Hank, McD, Kreider, Zucc, Brass, etc. My point is that for the right return anyone can be traded and that probably applies for all NHL teams. I do think that the NYR have a core they can build around, but with so many impending UFAs and RFAs, this is the time to think about trades/rebuild.
Good point about NTC. Totally forgot about that...my bad. Ok...let me revise my statement. Hank has trade value if he ever decides to waive his NTC, which I guess is a possibility if he ever decides he wants to go elsewhere to win a Cup.
@shoot_the_goaliePerhaps Hank has a no trade? Hank will win a Cup before Ovi does. Washington will never figure out how to win a Cup with Ovi because the Caps need someone to butts in the seats while The Rangers don't have that Issue.
I would trade Hank if the price was right. Say Crosby or Ovi straight up for Hank (and Hanks my fav player). The NYR signing Hank actually increased Hanks trade value if NYR decided to in fact trade him. He's 1) an elite goalie which is always in demand and currently in his prime (current slump withstanding) 2) just locked into a 7 year contract that over time will probably be extremely cap friendly as the cap continues to go up 3) probably cheaper now than had he hit the open market this July. (some rumors had him at 9m). If they didn't sign him and tried to trade him, they would certainly get some good parts/picks back but the NYR wouldn't have as much leverage as they do now if they tried to shop him as an impending UFA.
I was thinking the same thing reading these comments about Cally. Sounds like a rebuild everyone is asking for. Then why the hell did we sign Lundqvist? I did not agree with that contract most of all. So we trade our core guys for draft picks and such and we ride the shoulders of a 31yr old goalie thats taking a massive chunk out of our cap... If this is what everyone wants, then we should have traded Hank, Cally, Nash and bought out Richards. Thats a rebuild. Don't do it half ass with no direction..... What is a prime, win now goalie with a hand full of draft picks?
With the rate we are going and what the people on here want, we'll have just another mediocre team with a saddle on Hank.
5 years! LOL....you're out of your mind. He can't even play at that level anymore now! Check your heart at the door dude...I love the guy too, but this is a business and keeping Cally is as foolish as giving a 31 yr old goalie a 60 mil deal! Doh!!
Never said Cally was a problem...just said he was tradeable. If a team were willing to give up a top 4 draft pick or maybe 2 first round draft picks or a blue chip prospect and first rounder, I would listen. If the price is right I would trade any NYR except McD, cause McDs ceiling is so high and NYR have him signed to a great contract.
He is so oft injured he plays so limited
If he were to tone down his game and ease up to preserve his body he becomes pyatt
So trade him while GM's still see value because 5.5-6 million for a guy who plays half a year is not worth using cap space
Sorry heart and soul doesn't win championships from press box and hospital room
Cally is not a problem at all..he is just a bad investment, so you get what you can while you can for him. You're not paying him 5mil to score, you're paying him 5 mil because he is a good hockey player who plays a great tough style of play..WHICH he will NOT be able to continue at 5mil worth given his BODY TYPE. This is physics man.
See, I disagree, Cally has not had a chance to get a groove on this season due to injuries, and he seems to always come back sooner than expected. He played reduced mins last night because it was his first game back, still made some big hits, had a couple of takeaways and provided offense. The way how bad the other top guys are playing, Cally should not even be looked at as a problem because he is not. He should get his extension for no more than 5 years and 5.5 Million a year.
