There is definitely something brewing between the Rangers and the Avalanche. Since October, there have been reports of Blueshirt scouts attending Colorado games, however, those visits have apparently become more frequent as Adrian Dater at the Denver Post reports that Rangers scouts have been sighted on numerous occasions over the last few weeks (here, here & here).
There have also been rumors of the Avalanche's interest in Michael Del Zotto (here & here) during their on-going search for a puck moving defenseman, as well as Glen Sather possibly reaching out to Colorado GM Joe Sakic on the availability of Tyson Barrie.
Now, during a live chat, Katie Strang of ESPN.com says that the Avalanche could dangle Ryan O'Reilly at the trade deadline if/when they re-sign fellow Colorado forward Paul Stastny, who is a UFA at the end of the season. She adds that the Rangers have shown interest in O'Reilly previously and with the Avalanche in need of a defenseman, there might be a fit there as the Blueshirts could be willing to move Michael Del Zotto or Dan Girardi to obtain the 22-year old.
O'Reilly is in the final season of his contract that pays him $5 million this year. He'll become a RFA at the end of the year. In 43 games this season, O'Reilly has 16g, 14a, including two goals last night.
Last season, there were numerous reports (here & here) connecting a Del Zotto for O'Reilly trade.
...O'Reilly is a talented two-way forward, who can play both center and wing. While he's been on the wing this season for Colorado, he could automatically become the Rangers #1 center almost by default. He has a very similar two-way game as Stepan and, besides being a damn good hockey player, does the little things to help teams win. He'd be very much welcomed on this Rangers roster.
...with the way Derek Stepan has been struggling, I'd absolutely make this trade in a second if it only costs Del Zottto. But I have a sneaking suspicion that the Avalanche are going to want a little more than just the embattled defenseman for a young up-and-coming center in O'Reilly. I'd think JT Miller could be an additional piece in a trade for those two.
...as far as an O'Reilly/Girardi trade, obviously I'd do it if the Rangers felt they couldn't re-sign the veteran defenseman, but trading him would leave a huge gaping hole on defense meaning players such as Del Zotto, Moore and even Falk will be given more responsibilities which may not be a good thing. I'd lean towards still making the deal, but more on the fence with this one.
Meanwhile, in other Rangers/Avalanche rumors, Bruce Garrioch at the Ottawa Sun expects the Rangers to go after Stastny hard if he makes it to free agency this summer.
...the Rangers will have a ton of money freed up this offseason (Richards buyout?), so, if Stastny is a free agent, definitely expect him to become the latest NHLer to be grossly overpaid and then under achieve as a Blueshirt.
I've watched the Avs quite a bit this year. The chance to pick up a player of O'Reilly's quality, character and age is nothing to sneeze at. Would you swap straight up for J.T. Miller (I would)? If so, what's the stretch adding Del Zotto to that package?
I'm not completely up on the economic considerations here, but if O'Reilly is willing to be reasonable about his contract in order to continue as a Ranger, I think it's a good deal.
The idea should be to continue to add players that contribute to the team vision (and subtract those that don't) without sacrificing talent level or upsetting chemistry. I think this deal fits the bill.
I know there are plenty of people on this board who know a lot more about the contractual elements involved. Please educate me if you disagree.
@TheNYRBlog you think they're going to buy out Nash this summer?
@TheNYRBlog One thing to keep in mind with O'Reilly...what would his QO be? I know this contract was high so he may end up being a rental.
Im not that familiar with O'Reilly but JT Miller seems like just another hard skating grinder-a dime a dozen in the NHL
IMO. I would not chase either of these guys by offering up a lot at this point. One is an RFA and the other an UFA at years end. Plenty of time to pursue them later. If we could get O' Reilly for MDZ straight up I would do it. Man I would hate to lose JT. I think he will be an excellent NHL player for a bunch of years. Remember he only 20 years old still.
Little off thread here, but thinking about upcoming UFAs, and I know we've talked about Thornton, Orpik, etc. One name on the list that intrigues me is Ryan Carter. I know he's a Dev, but he's 30, pretty cheap, hardworking with a bit of grit to him. Thoughts?
Del Zotto and Stepan.... for OReilly and whoever else. .... Avs wanna get rid of that contract. Brassard can play 2 center. And we don't lose Miller... just a thought
I would rather see Slats offer up MDZ, Brassard & a 2nd tier prospect (Hrivick, St Croix, maybe even Fasth ) Throw in Ryan Borque for their 4th line, he won't ever make the Rangers and will likely be gone over the summer, and they still love his pop out there) for O'Reily & Patrick Borderleau (or Cody McLeod). Send Miller to Hartford, recall Conner Allen to be the 6th pair D man, maybe splitting some time with Falk. Let McLrath get big minutes in AHL, and is at the ready in the event of an injury. We're swapping RFAs and getting tougher for this year and then next 2.Sadly D.Moore may need to be moved as well, a 4th line of some variation of Boyle/Borderleau/Dorsette/Carcillo, plus the upgrade of O'Reily from Brassard & not having MDZ, makes me think this team is better now & for the next couple of years.
@TheNYRBlog Hey man did you see Reddit's AMA with The Captain?http://www.reddit.com/r/hockey/comments/1utpcu/mark_messier_here_to_take_your_questions/
I'm looking at getting two tix for tonight's game — can't walk into the Garden without spending at least $85/ticket.
The AV's are looking for a puck moving Dman so I do t think Dan G. Is being considered. I hate to Lose JT but that would be the logical asking price from Sakic. Him and DZitto. I'd say get it done.
remember, sometimes the best trade you make is a NO trade. you're talking about dishing out a lot of money in these scenarios. right now they are playing with a bit more vigor and that's really all they needed to do. they were playing without passion for quite a few games, they just need to continue !
Uh Oh....dont do it. Keep home grown Miller. We know all too often what happens. Oreilly will come in and do great for last half of the year here......then THE BIG MONEY AND YEARS....and his production will fall flat. It always happens. Stop it just stop.
I'm all for it. Big fan. I like JT a lot, but you gotta give something to get something. Get it done, Glen!
As much as I'd want O'Reilly, where do you put him? Do you demote Step to 3rd line center? Do you stick him on the wing? Who is getting a demotion or going with del Zaster to Colorado? They need to match salary as well.
Of course everybody's on Step's case for holding out on his contract. O'Reilly makes him look like a saint.
@TheNYRBlog oh sweet baby jesus please let this be true. I've been dying for him.
Any chance you can do the Game Thread several hours earlier??
Rangers-Flyers baby. I'm so geeked up for this game, I'm about to jump out my skin..lol
Wife comes home last night after work at 3;45 a.m...and sees me in bed all blurry eyed on the computer......conversation went like this....
Wife: Baby, what are you doing up this late?
Me: I'm watching some old Ranger- Flyer brawls. Also watching Flyer fights from this year...looking for certain tendencies in fighting styles..etc.
Me: ( I go on a tangent about the Rangers lack of toughness...the Flyers physicality..etc....Wife just rolled her eyes)
Wife: Oh,,,and why is your hair stubble in the bathroom sink?
Me: Shaved my head at around 2am.
Me: Couldn't sleep...wanted to get ready for the game tonight.
Wife: You know you don't play hockey anymore right?
Wife: And you know you won't be playing for the Rangers tonight right?
Wife: And you're "scouting report"(she used air finger quotes..hate when she does that)....the Rangers won't be coming by to pick up that report will they?
Wife: You're a retard...go to sleep
Ah..life in the McPhee household before a big game....lol
Where's Joe? Is he up this early? I need the Squirrel Whisperer. Unleash the Squirrel early Joe....its Rangers-Flyers!!!!
Miller and dz for Barrie and oreilly. Buy out Richards use that money for stasny. Keep g man. Need his minutes and leadership on the blue line.
No They will not buyout Nash. He is still only 28. Richards for sure a goner . (I hope)
@SamsportsfanSam@TheNYRBlog How could they with buying out Richards? They can only buyout 1 player.
@AG_Blue No way I would give up Miller.IMO. he will be one of the Rangers cornerstone in the future. NO TRADING MILLER!!!!!!!!!!!
@RyanTheBay @TheNYRBlog Who the hell is O'Reilly,Is this the O'Reilly who played for Boston in the eighties and was a punching bag for Clark Gillies of the fishsticks? He is the only O'Reilly I've ever heard of. LOL.
McPhee! Rootin for ya, Brother.
LET'S GO RANGERS !!!
The AVs are looking to keep Statsny that's why they are looking to move O'Reily. Unlikely they move O'Reily without already having Statsny locked up or supremely confident they will before July 1st. For the kind of money Statsny will be getting, i'd rather stay away from him.
I totally hear you. Miller is awesome. It's be great if we could do DZ straight up. Didn't the pens get Iginla for prospects or something. In any case, I'd be interested in bringing in O'Reilly and I'm all for a shake up. That said, the team has been coming together and there are some good things happening. We're just not real contenders.
@KreiderisTheChosenOne Or Simmonds.
I hope Carcillo gets in his old buddy Hartnell's face.
Rinaldo out 6 weeks Josh. I'm concerned about Rosehill..if he dresses tonight. Can take a punch...throws with ferocious intent.
If the Flyers try to bounce us around early...Carcillo has to drop'em...stem the tide so to speak.
Damn...I wish we would have brought up Haley...at least for this game. :(
One is rfa one is UFA they could lose both. Stasny won't make that much more than Richards would but would be much younger with more upside. Guys u can build around.
I agree completely. But Simmons every time we play... always hands down gets into something.....
Hartnell takes his courage pills.and gets brave..
and Allen wants to stay on the big club so he will try and make a statement especially against ex team
Yep....know about Simmons...Grossman......Allen...and Hartnell.
But if I'm in the line-up...playing my style...I'm focused on Rosehill.
Think of it like a wild west movie...everybody is... let's say...a cattle rancher.....and you're about to get into a shootout with the bad guys.
Now..the bad guys are cattle ranchers too...all except one...the gunslinger...the hired gun..he's no cattle rancher....he's the killer of the group.....
That's Rosehill....the hired gun. He's not on the team to play hockey...he's on the team for one reason and one reason only.....to throw down.
They should have.....If this gets ugly...only one person to blame... and that's AV. For refusing to dress a more physical line up...As he always does
That's the point , if they move O'Reiley, they aren't letting Statsny go. He's coming off a 6.6. AAV, What's he going to cost as an UFA? O'Reily's offer sheet signing with Calgary may have left a bad taste in GM Sakic's mouth, that's another reason he is being shopped.
