Last night's loss to the Islanders was a bit of a reality check for the Rangers and their fans. Despite the Blueshirts recent success, they still have plenty of holes, one of which is consistent scoring throughout the lineup.
Since we all know Glen Sather won't sit on his hands at the trade deadline you have to assume he's scouring the league for offensive upgrades.
According to Luke Fox at Sportsnet.ca, one of those players could be the Capitals' Martin Erat. The 32-year old forward has been beyond underwhelming since being traded to Washington from Nashville at the trade deadline last year for a pretty expensive package. In fact, Erat, who has asked for a trade earlier this season, has been so bad he has exactly ZERO goals this season and was a healthy scratch for five straight games earlier this month.
Rangers fans got a first hand look at what a liability he can be on the ice this past Sunday when he took three penalties including this spear to Brian Boyle's family jewels...
Erat's $4.5 million per year cap hit runs through the end of next season.
Fox adds that because the Rangers are "forward hungry" they may be willing to take a chance on Erat. However, he feels a bad contract would have to go back to Washington.
Between 2003 and 2012, Erat consistently produced 50-60 point seasons in Nashville.
...this is what they call in the sports world as a high risk, high reward move. Erat sounds like an absolutely disaster on and off the ice. The last thing the Rangers need is an enigmatic forward giving half ass efforts on a nightly basis. That's not only detrimental to the team's overall on ice performance but the harmony in the locker room.
...having said that, the guy has a ton of skill and could potentially explode in AV's up-tempo offense. Also, the thing about aloof European players, when they're in a happy place and producing they're rarely a problem. Plus the Rangers would be able to get him dirt cheap as the Capitals would likely trade him for a bag of pucks at this point.
...if the Rangers do trade for Erat it will mark the second year in a row the Rangers will have traded for a player with zero goals on the season to improve their offense. That would have to be some kind of record.
High risk? we didnt give anything up yet. High reward? Guy tops out at 58 points. Sometimes i dont think you read what you write.
Kevin is that you playing goalie?
I'd consider this high-risk, low reward. What's the potential reward? We pull one of our top-9 forwards out of the line-up and hope this guy is better. No thanks.
We already have Pouliot to fill the "potentially enigmatic european winger ready to disappear at a moments notice". Pass.
The public request for a trade puts him in a special circle of players no one should want on their team. It's one thing to be a "Team" guy, and go to your ownership and said "I'd like to be traded, the team is rebuilding, I want a cup, you could get a nice return for me". But this guy is on the F'ing Capitals and he's just whining because he's not getting the ice time he wants and the linemates he wants!
Go play in the KHL! Next rumor, please!
The dude negated a Caps goal the other night and showed every possible sign of not caring if he takes a penalty. Gee where do we sign?
I hope this is just a sports writer looking for filler, a big resounding NO to Erat. Sather has gone beyond his quota of high risk-high reward players. BTW, I don't see how "balanced" scoring is a Rangers weakness this year? In the past, if the top line didn't produce, they were done. This year, their top 5 scorers are on 3 different lines and 1 defenseman. How much more balance do you expect from them? Everyone could always use more scoring, but I don't think the balance is the issue.
There isn't one guy on this team, not even Del Zotto, I'd be happy trading for this sack of crap. If Pyatt were still here, I'd say no. From what I hear he's a locker room killer aka a GIANT asshole.
I think they need help more on the back end of their dee and of course they can use more size up front...their's someone on winnipeg who can play both forward and dee and I think he would fit in nicely with this team.....You know who I'm talking about
I really don't see the Rangers taking on a guy with $4.5m on his contract and 0 goals. We did so with Clowe last year and it's not even worth a 3rd or 4th round pick. One name that hasn't been circulated around but i feel fills a dire need for this team and who i believe will be available or atleast his team will hear an offer is Ed Jovanovski. Yes, he's 37 years old and is in the middle of a 4 year deal with 1 more year left after this one but the age and experience is a great fit, as well, one issue we've had is versus teams that have top 6 physicality (Boston) we have to avoid the big hits because we don't have much in our top 6, you can't put Carcillo out vs. Chara for example, but you can slide Jovanovski into your top 4 D to protect the speed of the top 6, he still has a scoring touch as well and in my opinion he wouldn't cost much more than a mid level prospect and a late round pick to pry away. Good fit, with a cheap price. I'm sure at the right cost we can have some of the contract eaten by Florida as well. I don't think Sather is in a rush to fill in or disrupt any chemistry in the top 6 or top 9 with how they've been playing.
No. Oh man please no. The guy last broke the 20-goal mark in 2009-2010. He's requested two separate trades from two teams in the last 8 months. We already have big cap problems when it comes to finding room for Girardi and Callahan. Adding a 4.5M cap hit for a bottom-six forward next season as well? Forget it. Never going to happen. Sather's not even that desperate.
@Gottalovetheblue Stupid trade.
@KreiderisTheChosenOneI thought I had deleted every copy of that!!!!!!
@johnnyb3910 Pouliot is our potentially enigmatic CANADIAN winger ready to disappear at a moments notice. Erat would fill the EUROPEAN slot. (Canada is not in Europe)
@KreiderisTheChosenOneC'mon, Erat is the poor man's Evander Kane. lol
@gravey94Actually, I said "consistent" not "balanced". Not a lot of players Rangers can rely on nightly to provide scoring.
@NYRblogneillBut, but...I got nothing.
@Herman_NYRBlogWas shocked to see the Rangers mentioned as a possible team. I guess most pundits just like throwing the Rangers in on any trade discussion.
if we do need top tier scoring, why not go get Matt Moulson? He'd absolutely re-sign, and would probably cost Del Zotto and JT Miller as well as a mid round pick or a mid level prospect, for that price, i'd bring him in, give him a 3-4 year extension and put him on that 2nd line with Brassard. I wouldn't go paying anything on the discount shelf for a guy like Erat who has never had a positive mention when it comes to locker room chemistry or coachability. He'll be in the KHL in the next 2 years anyways. I think Moulson's intensity fills a need we need on the top 6 as well.
