Adrian Dater at the Denver Post reports that the Rangers have asked the Avalanche about the availability of 22-year old defenseman Tyson Barrie.
The 5' 10", 190lb Barrie has 2g, 6a in 25 games this season. He is in the final season of his entry level deal that pays him $715K this season. He will be a RFA at the end of the year.
Speculation is that the Rangers are dangling Michael Zotto in exchange for Barrie. However, Spector's Hockey feels that Avalanche GM Greg Sherman would hang-up on Glen Sather if that was the Rangers trade proposal.
...from what I've read about Barrie, he sounds like the Avalanche's version of Del Zotto. Started the year with high expectations, but was sent to the AHL just five games into the season after frustrating head coach Patrick Roy with his lack of physicality and bad decision making on the power play. It seems as though his demotion did him well as since his recall in November he's had more grit and is making things happen with the extra man. He has five points (2g, 3a) in the last nine games. Four of those five points are on the power play.
...it doesn't sound like the Avalanche would make this trade, but this would be a deal I would absolutely endorse.
Meanwhile, Bruce Garrioch at the Ottawa Sun continues to perpetuate the "Bruins are interested in Dan Girardi" rumor.
Garrioch adds that the Rangers have been shopping Girardi because Sather is concerned he won’t be able to re-sign the UFA defenseman.
On Friday, it was reported the Rangers recently had contract discussions with Girardi's reps.
...assuming this is just Sather doing his due diligence. He wouldn't be doing his job if he wasn't looking at every option involving Girardi's future or lack of it with the Rangers.
...Girardi has points in four of the last five games (1g, 3a) and has been much better defensively of late, so I find it very doubtful Girardi is going anywhere, especially if Del Zotto ends up being moved.
Some of the folks on this comment board shouldn't even be allowed to post on the internet let alone suggest roster moves for a professional sports team. Girardi plays BIG minutes, tops in the NHL in fact for a few years now. His value is as good as any big ticket rental in the last 5 years, but that means a prospect or two and a pick, nothing more nothing less. 5 mil is a big # for him indeed, but who do you plan on replacing him with? Go ahead and name these mythical, comparable, available d-men...
Rangers should trade Girardi.Could the Rangers afford to trade Danny G, who plays big minutes for a player that would be a blue chip prospect or a high pick plus an NHL roster player? How would that affect the team right now?I think yes they can.We have Connor Allen and Dylan McIIrath and they can step up later during the second half and playoffs. They are almost ready-(but McIIrath has the injury -I don't know how serious)and we can do without Girardi barring any further injuries. What we would get would be something- a return that will help the team be stronger.Because it wouldn't be wise to resign Danny G at his salary. We can sign someone else who is better for that kind of dough.
Sather has to get to work and use his trade magic on this one.
Girardi hears his name in trade talks now offensively he is playing better.... look call a spade a spade the guy is a decent dman in a certain system.... BUT he is extremely SOFT. He is going to want at 5 mill a yr and MacD is our best dman and doesn't make that...
For 5 mil u can get a beast of a dman. That is a stay at home physical nasty fl. Stand rushingvforwards up at the blue line force
Forget this love affair with this guy. Girardi isnt gonna get us to a cup... wake up. He has more value to other teams due to his previous play not his current play.... so u see what he can bring back.... Trade for quality and if it's potential we trade for. That guy better be a sure thing
I'm going to throw this out there too...this is the 'perfect storm' to trade Lundqvist. Let me explain. What happens if Talbot continues to outplay Lundqvist? As this season continues to draw to an end, the games become more important to win, and the coach needs to play the goalie who gives him the best chance to win. If you bench Lundqvist, you have just shot a hole through your $8.5 mil. investment along with his confidence. If you play him and he doesn't perform, you also end up with the same results and no playoffs. What happens in just two years when your second string goalie is still playing better and is now a UFA? This scenario only worsens with time. The perfect time ( or storm ) to make this trade is now while there still might be interest for Lundqvist. That interest might come from Columbus. With John Davidson as GM, Bobrovsky not living up to his expectations, and the salary of Bobrovsky, Gaborik (UFA) and whoever else is included in the trade (Dubinsky + Johansen?) frees up $18 mil. for them. Lundqvist becomes affordable for them and an attractive option. Talbot becomes our no. 1, is cap friendly for the next 5yrs. along with whatever our return is from the trade. Our smart GM better be thinking about this.
Here's a novel idea...go after PREMIUM players to rebuild the Rangers. Why trade for players that other teams want to dump. Want to build a better defense, then identify teams that are deep in defensive talent... Nashville and Phoenix are loaded and can't play everybody. Nashville is short on offense, so make available Kristo, Pouliot, Brassard, Boyle, Hagelin, to get a Mattias Ekholm, Joonas Jarvenin, Connor Murphy, or Michael Stone. These guys are all just one step away from becoming elite defensemen, and then untouchable. Damn, I wish we had a smart GM!
@TheNYRBlog G+DZ for Lucic and Krug. Done. Make me the GM. I win hockey.
G is a good d man and you need him, he is at this point not replaceable if Boston wants him give us lucic + someone, and if your going to trade dz just to trade that would be a waste
Id trade girardi in a minute for a stay at home nasty dman with a hard shot from the point Not those butterfly wrist shots he gets lucky once in a blue moon with Moore and Allen can rush the puck well enough
If they're unhappy with MDZ's lack of progress, then why would they trade for another team's MDZ? God, I'm really tired of Sather's reclamation fetish! You get lucky with change of scenery trades once in a while, not every friggin trade and free agent signing!!!
As far as G, I always thought he would be the odd man out because of the way the Rangers were stacked on D and you just can't pay everyone. However, now that Staal is struggling, MDZ is MDZ, and Moore and Stralman are not gangbusters, I don't think they can afford to trade G unless they are getting another top 4 d-man somewhere.
I think the only move we should make is dz. keep Girardi and sign him. I like the move for Carcillo. I think that was a smart move on Sathers part. I know we hated him but he's kinda what we need.
Enough with the smallish defenseman. We need to get bigger and much stronger. As for Girardi, he's not even playing up to his current contract let alone what he may be looking for in the next one. His physical game is soft and I still don't like the fact that he is a wimp in supporting his teammates when the going gets tough. Move him.
Yeah, quietly Dan G is looking better and had an important goal. IDK Barrie but it seems to me we need together bigger on the blue line, not smaller
@TheNYRBlog def agree would make that deal in a heart beat, extra plus, he's right handed....
According to Barrie's profile at Hockey's Future (http://www.hockeysfuture.com/prospects/tyson_barrie/), he's actually 6'1,'' not 5'10." Also a right handed shot, which we need.
Shop DZ why Girardi? Start Unloading underachievers big contracts such as Richards, Nash. Bring in some grinders. Resign Cally and Girardi ASAP.
Nothing wrong with Girardi. A lot wrong with a system and a management that has failed him and several other players. Guy has taken more shots to the body than any other player in the past 10 years. I think he deserves the "A" and then you will see his game turnaround.
@TheNYRBlog For what its worth brooks is right. MDZ is only guy on NYR that can handle top 3 minutes.
Exactly. I don't see the return being as huge as some folks may think. Giradri would bring a top prospect & maybe a 2nd rounder from any club looking to deal for him, maybe a conditional pick based on if they sign him, so a 2 becomes a 1. or more likely a 3 becomes a 2. If the Bruins offered Dougie Hamiloton, yeah, i'd make the deal but i see that as a very unlikely scenario. In the cap era manageable contracts are more of an asset. Better off trying to sign Giradi for 4-5 years and hopefully get a hometown discount. 5.5 a year. He'll get 6 on the openmarket come July. He'll potentially have more value in 2 years IF they wanted to move him. We don't have a solution in house to replace those minutes & i wouldn't want to disrupt McDonagh's development. It could be like moving Beukeboom when Leetch was setting in with him as a partner.
@mando24179 Yes, agree! For five million dollars, we should get five million dollars of VALUE... we already have at least THREE players who are GROSSLY OVERPAID for what they have contributed this year... They should be bona fide superstars with superstar production, not mediocre, "average" performance.... IT IS A SHAM.
A few things. JD isn't the GM for Columbus. Talbot is a UFA after next year, so if somehow he becomes an elite goalie after Hank has been traded, he's going to need to get paid too. More importantly, Hank will, not be traded, Despite what people think, he is still viewed as an elite goaltender by the Rangers for the upcoming years. His contract is set up that he gets 11 Million next year with 8 Million as a Signing Bonus. then 10 Million, 9.5 Mil, 9 Mil, 7.5 Mil, 7 Mil, & 5.5 mil. No one is paying him that kind of money, above his AAV , I find it unlikely the Blue Jackets would move Bobrovsky, he's still a RFA after his deal is up next year, he's 25, he's got a ton of upside.
@MikeBlue Who would back up Talbot? Obviously this year is a throw away season then? I agree with Daniel below... we have made too many trades with Columbus, another mediocre team... what is so astonishing is that we continue to trade with mediocre teams for their so called underachieving "mediocre" talent... why can't we trade with Chicago or the Ducks more often? lols
I don't think we should completely turn into the New York Bluejackets. Lundqvist is one of the best goaltenders in the NHL. His current performance is reflective of the way the team plays in front of him. I'm am positive that he will be back in form if not by the end of this season, then by next season. This is his first real rough patch. Its not something to dump him over. If a trade is the only option though, the only way I find it acceptable is if we trade him to a team like Chicago for a 1st round pick, Corey Crawford, Patrick Sharp, and Nicklas Jarlmarsson or LA for Ben Scrivens, a 1st rounder, Jeff Carter and Slava Voynov. Otherwise, keep him where he is.
@MikeBlue Telll us more, Blue... I have never heard any of the players you mentioned, but that does not mean they are not any good.... what leads you to believe they are one step away from stardom? And do you know something Nashville does not know? Every team wants to get an UNDERRATED superstar in the making.... that is how we will get our next version of Brian Leetch, or Adams Grave, or Mark Messier.... we will scout and find someone who has POTENTIAL and then groom him in our system...... all the other high caliber players have been identified and are worth a kings ransom. We have our high paid underachievers already - NASH, RICHARD and LUNDQVIST.... all three are way over paid for what they have delivered all year.... I am all ears, Blue.... I'd like a change Ihe the way we shape our roster - find and develop exceptional POTENTIAL, rather than paying way too much money for players whose best days are BEHIND them!!!!
@KreiderisTheChosenOne o be Allen had a very "satisfactory" boring performance... he is a serviceable defenseman, which every team needs... not a superstar, but not a risky guy.... maybe top four, at best... let's see how he develops...
@Tyleracampora @TheNYRBlog Why don't you apply to be GM for the Rangers. I understand there are no qualifications.
@Tyleracampora Why the hell would Boston make that trade?
@NYR44 The way we will get a decent D-man for Girardi is to trade him to a team who can sign him long term at a salary that they can afford. Then, that team will part with an asset on parity with Girardi, who is better than decent. Girardi reminds me of Michal Rozsival a bit.... Girardi and Rozsival can play big minutes and they are reliable and dangerous at times. It would be good to get a player for Girardi who is reliable AND tough in front of the net.... if not Girardi, we still need this type of player. Our defensemen are getting beaten up way too much and we don't scare anyone away from in front of our net.
@gravey94 Hahahaha, Gravey, my sentiments exactly! Why trade away someone for someone else exactly the same, hoping and praying a change of scenery will change the player? That is wishful thinking... we need to trade for what we need not a wish list... This Barrie guy sounds like the kind of player Colorado fans are hoping to get rid of for a steady, reliable defensemen who can check and play tough in front of our net.... and isn't that what we need too???
@johnAMIRANTESrug Yes, John A... yes indeed... we do what we can with what is out there... we were opportunistic and we made a deal that made sense... you have hit the nail on the head.
@BRING BACK DUBI The Bruins are notorious for power forwards and tough guys aren't they? I mean Lucic, Neely, O'Reilly, Jonathan, Miller, Byers, Marchant, Chara, Sanderson, Cashman, Nilan, Plett......
@BRING BACK DUBI Danny G is worth keeping... AT THE RIGHT PRICE.... but let me remind everyone... we have RICHARDS, NASH, and LUNDQVIST and all of them are getting paid OBSCENE amounts of money but playing like AVERAGE players.... it is shameful.... we are patient with all three of them HOPING that they will get out of their funk, but I assure you, if they continue to play like this for years to come, we will want to JETTISON them, or trade them, because they are NOT WORTH WHAT WE ARE PAYING THEM no matter how much they have done in the past.... we should be paying player what they deserve for NOW not the past.
@Betweentheworlds Everytime I see Girardi or McDonagh get hit hard, then get up slowly I cringe. Both of them are one big hit away from being injured long term..... we do need a bit more size back there... they are getting brutalized... last few games were especially painful to watch. You guys remember both Girardi and McDonagh getting checked and getting up slowly? Seems to be Ground Hog Day and it seems to be happening more and more.... who was it that jabbed their stick in one of our guys groin the other day??!! OUCH!
@mobilope @TheNYRBlog Barrie for Del Zotto is a waste of time... our time, teams time, players time..... we need to think more creatively... if that is the best upgrade Sather can think of, he needs to be changed.... his whole job is about upgrading the team.... his efforts this year have been abysmal... I'm still waiting for him to fulfill Dolan's dream and give us the same caliber championship team he coached in Edmonton....
@rangermom Reminds me of an Alexei Gusarov type of invisible player
@me295 @TheNYRBlog Top three minutes doing what? Playing with Facebook on his iPhone???
@me295 But what does he does with those top 3 minutes is another thing.
And that's what I am saying......I'm not that in love with anyone. To over pay them cause he is this or that. I want championships. ..shame on them if they sign somewhere else and we win when they are gone... We need an identity... another coach..and a shake up of the roster cause it's plain to see the leadership on this team aren't getting it done.
@TheNYRBlog well. I did Richie/DZ/2 first picks for Luc and Krug in NHL14..........
@TheNYRBlog hahahaha I wasn't serious. I've seen people say like Luc and Marchand for G/DZ/1st Rounder. Just being ridiculous.
@TheNYRBlog unless a package with him can bring in a guy like ott. I don't want another underachieving d man
