The New York Rangers (21-20-2) defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs (21-17-5) by the score of 7-1, tonight. For a box score, go to Yahoo! Sports.
...don't look now, but the Rangers are actually on a little bit of a roll here. Despite all the warts, the Blueshirts have somehow found a way to win five of their last seven and now have some much needed snarl on the way with Carcillo. Time for a run?
...man, I would have paid to see Kreider skate past Phaneuf on the bench after his goal and give him the Buchnevich treatment. More impressive than the goal was his willingness to throw down with Phaneuf later in the game. When you play with an edge, eventually you're going to have to drop the gloves. Kid was a beast tonight.
...i'm really not trying to cry goalie controversy but AV has to ride Talbot right now, right?
...you think you can contain Dominic Moore? Fuhgeddabootit.
...wonder if Carcillo will try to take Gaborik's old locker while Girardi just stands there and watches.
...Pouliot continues to go hard to the net and he continues to score. Hope Nash is taking notes.
...speaking of Nash, 15 Rangers players with points tonight. He was not one of them.
...good for Boyle to get one tonight. I still contend he's having a very under-rated season.
...i've seen a number of Toronto defensemen's names attached to Del Zotto rumors. After watching them play tonight, I think I'd rather keep Del Zotto.
...assuming the numbers game is going to go Miller's way from now on.
...i guess Staal's vision is ok. Which might not be a good thing considering how much he's struggled defensively this season.
...a lot of us on the blog put a ton emphasis on the Rangers playing with toughness. Unfortunately, some misconstrue it as solely meaning fighting. While fisticuffs are part of the equation, tonight's effort included the TEAM toughness that is needed on a nightly basis for the Blueshirts to continue to be successful. Tough forecheck, winning puck battles and hitting. It's not enough for one individual player to play with grit and sandpaper. The entire team must have that mentality.
...having said that, when the team comes out flat, which the Rangers have done way too often this season, that's when a guy like Carcillo can prove his worth by sparking the team with a big hit, fight or agitating the opponent.
...secondary players continue to carry Rangers. Team might be dangerous if top players ever start producing.
...off tomorrow then Columbus in town Monday night. Let's hope the Rangers saved some goals.
Post game talk...
OK, I'm probably gaining the well earned reputation for being the most boring repetitive f*ck on this blog but reading all the Hank trashing is making my eyes burn so here goes (again): Hank is in a SLUMP. He's NOT washed up. S-L-U-M-P - all players have those. Yeah, I use to say Hank was overrated too but that's only when half the board was calling him "the best goalie in the world" just month's ago, and I'm willing to bet those are some of the same people who want to throw him under the bus now and proclaim a rookie who's played 1/3 of the games for half the season the new "King". He may have the best save percentage and an awesome record now but he's never even sniffed a playoff game, or a must win situation. A bit premature? Ya think??? Look, I think he can handle the pressure and will pass the Broadway playoff test if the NY Cybils ever make it to the freakin playoffs but don't you want to wait to see what happens before dumping our franchise goaltender? hank is in a slump. Hasek had a couple of doozies of slumps in his unearthly career (I'm sure one of those came right about the same time coach Nolan was banging Mrs. Hasek) - so did Dryden, Roy, Richter etc. etc. He will return to form I'm sure and carry this team like a sack of cow chips like he's done so many times before. Personally I will officially get worried if he's still playing like this at the end of Feb. Look, Hank is not the best goalie in the world - I would never be so naive to think. His contract is top-heavy, but only a little bit and done that way to secure your most important position. He is a top 5 goaltender in this league and for 2 straight years he had top 3 numbers. Richey will get bought. Nash will get moved unless he stops taking estrogen and starts playing hockey. the cap goes up. A smart GM will have enough leeway to fill the holes and build this team again .... uhh... never mind. I didn't say that. It's fine, and if Talbot continues killing it, and Hank continues to flounder he can get moved in the off season. NTCs are no big deal. Just means the player has to approve the trade and he will if it comes down to that to the right team. right now Talbot is the hot goalie and the rolls of starter and backup need to be switched until Hank moves out of his slump. God, I hope it's soon. I want the King back!.
@TheNYRBlog he needs to be in the lineup tomorrow. Division game. Need to send a message
And if you watched last night, Toronto was just as pathetic as we were in pitt. So to give Cam credit for carrying the team on his back against the leafs is ridiculous.
You are lost. Hank is world class. Vezina winner. Gold medal winner. Has nothing to do with a love affair with Hank. Has to do with facts. Hank gives this team the best opportunity to win night in and night out. If you are saying that Cams f ing 6, 7, 8 wins is enough to carry this team than you are brain dead. Past glory? Please. You probably raised your hands and felt pretty proud of being a ranger fan on that "past glory".
Absolutely Love it. "wonder if Carcillo will try to take Gaborik's old locker while Girardi just stands there and watches.".
As per an older post stats showed that hank is seeing much more shots in close and therefore harder to stop. Logical
Until you watch talbot stop almost every one of those same shots and without giving up those rebounds hank does
Now is talbot better. No but let's look at one thing
Torts system gone no dman and forwards throwing their bodies in front of every shot
Girardi is exposed now that he is playing another system
Please remember he didn't get all the alcolades until torts took over
Hank may not be as good as he's looked in past without a Berlin Wall in front of him
And smaller pads
He's out of position all the time
When talbot is
This is like one of the movies where 2 people switch bodies
So trade girardi to Vancouver for bieska if possible and ride talbot till hank gets back into a groovr
In Sather's box last night were I think 2 old guys and what looked like 16yr old kid in a suit texting and the announcers referred to all of them as scouts, I guess that would explain some things.
@ Kocur Hank's glove has always been his weak spot, and I don't think the rest of the NHL just found that out this year. Everyone has always exploited that piece of the net on him. Just saying, everyone settle down with Hank. Do you truly believe Talbot is a better goalie than Henrik Lundqvist?
95% of Hank's loses have been due to a disjointed, shit-show-like effort from guys in front of him (ha, save for zucc).. what I mean is, there haven't been so many games where its like "we should have won, only if we didn't have that shitty goalie Lundvist in net.". Of course you could get a ton in return for trading Hank, but really?! Who ever in their right mind would ever have the foresite and the sack to Fucking trade lundqvist and let it ride on Talbot? Never fucking happen in any reality. That's Monday morning, adolescent bullshit. We are getting wins, hank is sound enough to be happy about that and give it another go when its time. He's a pro. Oh and yeah, wtF Nash?
We should gave traded lundquist before signing his no trade clause contract. I tell you, id be real pissed if talbot is the real deal and we could have gotten a kings ransom for lundquist and be good for years to come. It wouldnt have matterred if talbot wound up as good as lundquist if we got some great players by trading him.
Talbot plays.....Rangers win.
Lundqvist plays....Rangers lose.
I see no controversy here.
Lets face it Toronto goaltending made us look good last night.
Wouldn't be too upset with a trade of Stepan, depending on what we get back.
I think Miller will be the better player in the long run.
No, are you fn kidding me? Have you not been watching? Whether you like it or not Lundqvist is getting outplayed by Talbot. Past glory is just that.....past glory. Wins is what it's all about. If the team wins with Talbot and loses with Lundqvist where does that get you? Should the team forego playoff expectations waiting for Lundqvist to "find his game?" What if this is "his game?" No one can predict the beginning of a player's decline and perhaps this is his. Can you see past your love of Lundqvist to admit players decline? Maybe this is just an off year for Lundqvist. Should the Coach decide to let it be an off year for the team? As a fan I'd hope not! Ride who brings you victories and if it's just an off year for Lundqvist then let him prove it, even if it means next season. He's not going anywhere after that monster contract he received.
And to even suggest that the embarrassment in pitt was solely on Hank is mind boggling. No one showed up. Hard to be even remotely successful against the talent of pitt when you are by yourself .
Are you f ing kidding me? Not making excuses for Hank. He's not been the Hank we have been accustomed to. BUT t here is absolutely no comparison between Hank and Cam so wake up people. Such short memories you have. Playoff berths. Hank. Almost presidents trophy. Hank. ALL with absolutely no offense whatsoever. And now with constant inconsistency night after night with defensive lapses all over the place. Does he need to wake up. Absolutely. But please stop comparing the two and even bringing up the possibility of riding Cam. Its laughable.
The team plays better for Talbot because Talbot plays better for the team. It's time to stop the Lundqvist excuses....He's not doing the job this season plain and simple. If he was in the nets yesterday, Leads score 2 maybe 3. Different game if that happens. I say ride Talbot until he the team stops winning with him and net. By that I mean, let him play until he becomes as porous as Lundqvist. Goalie controversies are created by their play not by Coaches.
Re Secondary scorers:Not counting the actual numbers,Our big guns are supposed to be highly paid Nash and Brad RIchards, both FA acquisitions.Ryan Callahan and Derek Stepan are supposed to be there as well, but they both came from Rangers system If we look at our secondary scorers and our rookies. We see some mighty fine Ranger's system players.Chris Krieder. Carl Hagelin. Matt Zuccarello. JT Miller.Ryan McDonagh.Cam Talbot. Of our system players only one- MDZ -has declined once they made the roster regularly. My point is the youth movement began some years back is keeping this team above water right now.Our system players have adapted no matter what the situation and are now carrying us.We need more of course from our FA but maybe bringing in some more system players this year would help a bit.One or two of Kristo ,McIlrath, Fast, Lindberg. The farm team seems to help us-a lot.
What needs to happen is a reality check. ... start building around ur blue chip. Most consistent players... Kreider MacD and Zucc..... Kreider and Zucc show an edge. Rest of the team needs to be built around that mind set...... MacD doesn't back down. And none of those mentioned are fighters but need to stand up..
. Win or lose
A top flight enforcer is needed. Not these band aids Sather gets.....
Cotton Orr was looking to start some shit last night than God. We were scoring cause it could have gotten ugly fast
By the way WTF was Stepan all night. Another over rated. Player. His name was barely mentioned last night
Kevin, I like your point on goalie controversy. I remember seeing the interview with talbot a few weeks ago on NHL network and they wanted to call him Calm Talbot because of his calm demeanor. Do you think that the team is playing infront of talbot better because he has been more relaxed on the ice? I am also wondering how the game goes past night if Lundqvist is in net? Do they continue to build a lead or do the leafs get a few in and not let the rangers run away with the game?
Anyone still want to trade Del Z to Toronto for Franson or Gardner....those guys look like they are made of paper... As for Car bomb, he better not replace Miller on the 4th line, kid looked great last night.. Has got a ton of upside in him I see top 6 potential in the future i he keeps improving.. Gotta keep the same lineup in tact.. Also, Cally was unbelievable last night the Richards goal was all him a chance in te offensive zone followed by a terricic 200ft back check that was then turned around and followed by a nifty pass to Richy for wht was the first of two real quality wrist shots from the dot from Richards.
Like a sack of cowchips? Are you implying that the Rangers are a bag of s**t? I think you are on to something. Actually ,I like your simile.
Talbot plays much higher in the crease taking away the angles, Hank play too deep and that is why he is getting beat in close much more than in the past. Other teams have figured a way to beat Hanks style. He needs to change.
@DaveFLHaha - and here I thought they were referring to the chimpanzees in the 2nd row. My bad
Don't think Talbot is better just that the rest of the league has found a way to exploit Hank playing so deep in the net. Hence many more goals from in close.
@eNYRight34 Last year, Hank was terrific... but last year was last year. This year he has let in some very mediocre goals. His weakness seems to be up high on the glove side. He is getting beaten there regularly.... I'm not sure it is all about the play in front of him, as much as it is he is simply getting beaten because the opposition is exploiting a new found weakness...
Nope. Sather would have botched a Hank trade too. He probably would have gotten a couple of former 1st round busts and an oft injured former star on the decline, knowing him.
@Rangeranger Richards, Nash, Lundqvist... are all good players. But let's face it.... are they playing like they are worth the money they are getting??? NO WAY!!!!!
I don't think his NTC is in effect yet.
There are alot of people with a hardon for Hank. He can't do any wrong.. IF he lets up a garbage goal. It happens sometimes. If the team gets destroyed, its because the team didn't show up. If a shot from the point goes in, its because the D didn't clear out in front. The list goes on and on. THis is the easiest argument to win. Rangers win alot more when Talbot is in. They don't with Hank. Easiest argument to win ever.
I agree. That seems to be the norm for the Rangers when Hank plays though. So if it Takes Talbot to get them going then so be it.
Agree about the past. Hank did alot of great things in the past. I know Hank should be the better goalie. At least he was with the 5 goalies in front him under Torts. But i couldn't give a shyyyt about that. The Rangers play better when Talbot plays. They win more games. Talbot wins more games. So you should ride the goalie that gives you the best chance to win. Right now it is Talbot and not Hank. Its quite obvious actually.
Totally agree. Its crazy how Hanks game has turned for the worst without the 5 goalies blocking for him he had with Torts.
If we start building Miller has to be considered a piece to build around... idk why there is any talk of him being moved... so far I love his game, but he hasn't been given a chance. Also, Stepan... he is the youngest forward on the USA roster, and I think a very solid second line center. Problem is we need a first line center... Of course including the three you mentioned
I would really like to see Miller centring Cally and Hags instead of Rich
They guy u sit is Boyle...... and alternate. Hagelin in there as well.... team needs to make decisions. Of what chips they are willing to trade for more quality players
@Rangers_54@Bring back Langdon@shoot_the_goalieHis positioning is off, his reaction time slowed. The league hasn't all the sudden figured out sh*t in what his 8th season? That would imply the NHL is a bunch of morons on skates. Something's got him off his game. What? Your guess is as good as mine. The coaching staff need to work with him and figure this out. do we even have a bloody goalie coach???
Not so sure about that. It just seems for whatever reason the NYR play horrible D in front of Hank. Take the PITT game. Not many of those goals were Hank's fault. Has Hank been on top of his game this year? No. But it seems like they leave him out to dry much more than they do with Talbot for whatever reason.
I agree with this. You do whatever it takes to get wins. I love Hank, and I do think the team for whatever reason just plays crappy D in front of him. But even if it's not deliberate, and the team plays better D in front of Talbot, you have to go with the winning formula. Is Talbot better in my mind? Absolutely not. But is the team better in front of Talbot than Hank right now? Absolutely yes.
They way AV. Has screwed with him. I'm not sure what to say about Miller. Love the kid and can be an effective pick as well. AV has a hard on for him though.....
Kreider has blossomed cause they got rid of Torts he was in the same boat last yr... and look at him now
@shoot_the_goalie@Rangers_54@Bring back LangdonShoot: understood, but it is the goalie's job to stop the puck? No? I hate it when announcers say "he had no chance on that one" BS. the goalie ALWAYS has a chance, even if he just finds himself in the right position at the right moment through intuition alone - what we call "being in the zone". Just knowing somehow if the player will fake, or shoot, or pass. Knowing what the player will do with the puck before even the player does. hank use to have those instincts but somethings got him off his game now and he's thinking out there and finding himself slow reacting and out of position. When you are thinking you are not intuiting. Keen instincts are what separate a good goalie from a "King"
Hank out of position on at least 2 of them and Cindy goal was soft, any other pen and hank would of been berated
Talbot was in position all night and made several goal saving plays makes all the saves in shots in close w/o giving up those rebounds hank does
The D plays same system for both goalies so that's a bunch of bull that they play different in front of Cam
Maybe they do because he makes the saves hank doesn't
@mando24179 Perhaps sitting a player in the press box, albeit for a simple cup of coffee might be a teaching/ learning strategy whereby the player (in the press box) is pre-preped on what to watch for and the coach's intent is for the player to see others play the way he should play in the future......commonly used by all ass-hole NHL coaches when their farm system is geographically close to the parent team.
Dude what I am talking about is the yo yo treatment. ... He is not ready ok. Then why call him up. 3 days later. .. then sit him out to send him back down..... then call him back up a week later.
I don't need the NY media for reference points. I watch the games. Who dresses and how they are played or misplayed........ same thing is happening to Miller under AV.
If the guy is not ready then leave him down for the y the way they are doing with Cristo & the other kid
Don't bring up Kreider to play 3 mins on the 4th line... that's just total bullshit... or leave him in the press box.... Shows poor management.. and evaluation on all levels... that'd what I am talking about... He is young he is going to make mistakes and that has to be accepted. ..dressing Pyatt and sitting Kreider just makes either coach look like an ahole. Just on player effort alone ... they guy went out and tried. All Pyatt did was skate around and collected a check.
@mando24179 You are way too sharp to say what you are saying, sounding much like NY Post. Torts did not play Kreider last year because he was too irresponsible defensively. Last year he chose not to back check.......not play the passing lanes in the neutral zone........not control the forcheck w/speed and w/ his strength and not to consistently get in the paint. They were all plays that he never had to learn in college. Torts and his staff developed that in him. What you see today is the results of that development.
I am not an AV fan but the same learning curve is now being applied to Miller.
Montreal and Toronto media continuallytalk about these issues when they compliment K's present play and when they point out Miller's learning curve and his great upside as you have pointed out numerous times..
Whenever anyone makes a personal criticism against a coach or a player it simply means they don't know what they are talking about so they attack on a personal basis. We all know what we all say when we are losing the argument. We put down our beers, turn to our adversary and say the words that we all know so well," AWWWWWWW _uck You !!"
NY media are (is) great at doing that!
