The New York Rangers (25-21-3) defeated the Detroit Red Wings (20-17-10) by the score of 1-0, tonight. For a box score, go to Yahoo! Sports.
...that was easily one of the most entertaining 1-0 games I've ever seen. Very reminiscent of a 1-0 shootout loss the Rangers had against the Devils back in 2011. Both teams flying around, creating chances and I think there was a little goaltender play as well. As a former goalie, it really doesn't get better than the duel we witnessed tonight.
...and you knew the only way Lundqvist or Howard was getting scored on was by a fluke goal. But you have to give Zuccarello credit for going to the net and making something happen.
...this Lundqvist guy the Rangers acquired a week ago is much better than the goalie they had earlier this season.
...listen, I get why the NHL implemented the hybrid icing, but I hate that the call is left up to the interpretation of the linesman. Leads to mistakes like the one that almost cost the Rangers the lead late in the third period.
...eight shots on goal for Nash. Too bad the only thing that went in was himself.
...i've been completely taken off guard by the physical presence that Pouliot has become.
...i know it's the Red Wings and they have a winning aura about them, but they were playing with the hockey equivalent of a split squad tonight, so let's not start sucking each other's d*cks over this win.
...seven shots on goal for McDonagh. SEVEN! One for each lash former Canadiens GM Bob Gainey should receive for trading him to the Rangers for Scotty Gomez.
...two straight games without a power play goal?!?!?! Did Sather rehire Mike Sullivan?
...two goals in the last 26 games for Mis-Stepan. (H/T McPhee)
...lots of venom from Rangers fans towards this team and Vigneault the first three months of the season. And justifiably so. Most rational members of Blueshirts Nation (c'mon, there's a few of them) can live with a loss as long the team puts forth a solid effort (see Tuesday's defeat to Tampa), but what we were subjected to earlier this season was a group of players going through the motions with zero emotion or passion. It was unacceptable. Then out of nowhere the season began to take a turn. I'm not even going to try and attempt to figure out where the kick in the ass came from the last 13 games (9-3-1). I'm just going to enjoy the ride and hope it doesn't end until June. And I suggest you do the same.
...off tomorrow then back-to-back games this weekend.
Post game talk...
The biggest problem with this win, and I am very happy that it is a win, is that we took 40+ shots and could only put 1 in. When you take 48 shots your goaltender should not have to be your number one star. This team needs to focus more on quality shots. I would be very interested to see how many Rangers shots are taken from the out side portion of the circles. Too many bad angle shots, or opportunities that would have been goals had we been crashing the net. All that aside, its nice to see them win a tight one, score late, and show some battle. It was non-existent at the beginning of the season, but that feeling that we can win any given game is starting to return.
Girardi's game seems to have come around BUT man .. grow a set of balls. You get slashed after the whistle by a player smaller than you and you don't do anything? On top of that, you let Kreider "fight" your battle? On top of that, a 2nd Red Wings player jumps in on Kreider and you don't do anything? I'll agree that we shouldn't trade Girardi now but come the off-season, I would not lost sleep if they let him walk and sign someone like an Orpik to replace him. It pain me to say this b/c I'm a big fan of his but this is hockey Dan .... you need to be tougher. Also ... he doesn't belong anywhere near a power play.
I'm glad Kevin brought up Pouliot. I do think Pouliot has found a home in NY if he keeps his play up. Big, power forward that can put one in here and there. He reminds me of Nash with his style which is why I think he was drafted so high. They were just hoping for more scoring out of him which never materialized. He was among the players I admit I wanted off the roster but he has really turned it around. For the money, I'm half way sold on him but he needs to stay consistent.
Zucc is awesome and I wish some on our blog would raise their game and stop criticizing him for "not finishing". What a joke. Even if he didn't score a single goal he would be 7th in scoring on the team simply from assists. Still, that is even short-sighted. His play is invaluable. He creates chances. How important are chances? How hard are they to come by? Well, you have a friend that gets a date every week that ends up in the apartment of a super model and you are really ready to criticize him for not closing the deal?? Really? Trust me...he is infinitely closer to the promised land than the majority, and you have to get THERE first and precious few can on a nightly basis. (wait...er...am I talking about hockey or the model now...damn) You get the point. Stop yer yammering about this guy not scoring.
Fun game, and 2 more points!! Zooooooooooooooouuuuuuuuucccccc!!! Dude is on fire.
Was Stepan always this slow, or am I just noticing it now because he isn't producing???
Even the Detroit announcers said the hit on smith was smiths fault and not a penalty.
Love the top cheese line and the punch to hank at the end!
No one has mentioned. .. how Girardi got punked by a rookie...hit in the back and didn't even turn around till Kreider mushed him and grabbed him by the neck... and where was Girardi...While this was going on... u ask..... no where.. another red wing jumps in and u guessed it. No Girardi....no where to be found..
But for some God awful reason people wanna resign that wuss....
Another thing there is lot of zuc bandwagon jumping....all of the negative comments where. He sucks. He to small. He cant play on this league. He doesn't score he cant pass etc......
He has been our best player. ... just a thought
Exciting game to watch, and thrilled to see the Rangers get the lucky bounce for a change. Great goal for MZA, this guy is just so much fun to watch.
But Kevin...sucking what? Completely unnecessary.
I'm just glad we weren't the team to let in the fluke. that was such a good game! if that was a playoff game it would go down in rangers history. what great effort from both sides. I have nothing but respect for the players on both sides.
Kev even though I hate him. Carcillo has had an effect. Players feel more comfortable on the ice because of his presence. Other players know he doesnt give a f%=k and will do anything to protect his guys. Dorsett has heart but not intimidating in the least......
Had a really tough time with the site last night....thats why i wasnt around in the 3rd....no victory squirrel. :(
Kevin..my man...you used Mis-Step in your write-up.....does that make it official? Maybe the name will work....like it did for Pouliot? ;)
Any Rangers fan - after the Rangers victory song is played, the garden plays another song this year when they raise their sticks. Does anyone know the name of this song?
Totally off topic but
Also, I'm going to keep my fingers crossed that Sather pulls a trade for Evander Kane out of his ass.
why did you bleep out d*cks? you couldn't have just said ducks? speaking of ducks, anaheim lost sheldon souray.for the season. maybe ramp a trade involving dz?'
As i tweeted earlier, Hybrid icing should not exist with an empty net... No discretion with clock (when the puck is touched) and leaves no room for bad calls like this evenings.
"...so let's not start sucking each other's d*cks over this win."
Nice The Wolf Pulp Fiction reference.
Zucc...what's not to love? Small guy who plays much taller and with a true joy of the game. Producing, after he got benched, and not once complained but took action. Guy who kinda got jerked around by Torts, but repeatedly stated that if he played in the NHL, it would only be for the NYR. Took less money to play in the NHL vs the KHL. This guy is all class and having fun doing it. That goal tonight was karma coming back to him.
I wish these post game interviews were directed towards bringing some personality out of these players. You just scored the GWG, what are you guys going to do to celebrate tonight in NYC?
At like 1:26 Zucc and John Giannone looked off care and chuckled. Could Johnny have informed us what just happened? MZA must have such a personality to be loved by his teammates the way he is as well as the play the way he does on the ice.
Pretty entertaining for a game that ended up 1-0. Everyone on the NYR starting to fire on all cylinders except Step & MDZ.
I'm really surprised Step hasn't turned it around yet. I was hoping the Olympic call was going to boost his game
Mark Prestopnik, I'm shocked at the 180 Poosalot has done this season. Never expected him to develop into this kind of physical presence.
and just think - about a month ago, you called pouliot a silly childish name to diss him. I think he''s really found a home and a role on this team. I root hard for him lately, because you can just see the potential and it all starting to click with him.
Another entertaining game from the boys in blue. Stepan and cally need to start finishing. Hats off to both goaltenders tonight. Lastly, hybrid icing needs some work. The bs call at the end nearly cost us the regulation win. Next 2 games are huge! LGR!
great write-up kev, i was there tonight and the intensity and overall game was great. Only thing I hated about the game is those amateur fans that ALWAYS scream HENRY-HENRY-HENRY, where I continuously have to correct them and say, It's Henrik, idiots.
@Say my Name You are spot on, Zucc is without a doubt the best player on the team and IMO. he rivals Lundqvist for the Rangers MVP.
Smartest and most creative player on the ice and I can probably add most physical for the season. His scoring is plus. If I were to pick my line mates, he would be a lock for one of them.
Has always been this slow. Slow feet and slow hands (very slow shot release) However, Step does possess a very high hockey IQ and is a very smart player, otherwise he wouldn't be in the NHL. With that said, no doubt he's struggling.
I took it as "sucking each others' ducks", you know, as in a reference to the red hot Anaheim Ducks.
C'mon man, it's from the movie Pulp Fiction and is completely appropriate in context. I'm 37, there's going to be some adult humor on the blog every once in awhile.
I would have no problem inserting Dorsett into the lineup in place of Moore or Boyle. A 4th line of Dorsett - Boyle/Moore - Carcillo would be a great energy line. I lean more towards Moore only b/c of his speed but to me its a flip of the coin. Dorsett was good on the PK so don't think we lose much in that respect.
Realistically I don't even see a spot on this team right now for Dorsett. No one is being taken off the top 3 lines for him, and I would rather have carcillo in then him.
@McPhee37Yeah, Livefyre said they were doing some kind of update last night that messed with comments section.
Mis-Stepan is official!!!!
Kane could have his ex-team Kovalchuk karma......
@shoot_the_goalie Gotta love his stance: NYR-only
He did say Kreider was behind the cameras trying to distract Zuc...
@wlandis421 they know its Henrik they say Henry for short and have been saying Henry for the past years think your the only Amateur fan here
Keep it up Kevin! That was a great pull. Crass comments by themselves are simply that...crass, but pulled from the zeitgeist....BRILLIANT!
@iwantgaborik so you're telling me the women in the crowd glancing at their phones the entire game yell henry for short because they just knew it was a nickname for henrik? nah didn't think so... also maybe wishing for a player who has a broken collarbone isn't the best idea. Also very odd that you're arguing with a fellow ranger fan over here on a blog that brings joy to both of us.
@Kevin DeLury I will always despise Adam Henrique, but just wanted to say I admire all your work here on the blog, it's great!
