According to Katie Strang at ESPN.com, a senior New York Mets source has revealed that the team has had discussions with the NHL about the possibility of an outdoor game in the future...
"We're always talking with various entities about bringing big events to Citi Field," the source said. "We did have discussions with the NHL and are always open to revisiting them down the road."
NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly confirmed these discussions to ESPN.com...
"Yes, we have had a number of discussions in the past about the possibility of staging an outdoor game at CitiField. Not in a position to predict if or when that might happen."
Meanwhile, New York Yankee management was so thrilled with the response to both games this past week, they're ready for another go around (via MLB.com)...
"If they want to come back, whenever they want to come back, the schedule is up to them, they're more than welcome. We love this event," Yankee President Randy Levine said. "This has just been an incredible two days. The stadium is alive. It's been a lot of fun. We've sold out both games. I leave it to the NHL. It's their league, it's their games. Whenever they think it's appropriate.
"Commissioner [Gary] Bettman has done a phenomenal job. We love the event, but we'll take the lead from them."
...i will be absolutely floored if the NHL isn't back outside in New York again next year. The two games at Yankee Stadium were a home run (pun intended). The sold out crowds. The television ratings. Cee-Lo Green. I mean, how could they not bring it back.
...now obviously the concern is watering down the product. I definitely think, if the NHL does bring it back to the Metropolitan area next year, it should be cut down to just one game and maybe as James suggested yesterday they eventually schedule the Stadium Series games for every other year.
...i was initially concerned that the Stadium Series games would take away from the Winter Classic, but after what I witnessed in person Wednesday night, I not only think it should be back in New York as soon as possible, but every that NHL city should get the opportunity to experience this event.
I don't care what stadium they play in, as long as they win. Other than the Yanks playing interleague there, it will be a sellout.
Well at least Citifield doesn't have the look and feel of an old mental hospital! Love the stone colors in that stadium!!
A real baseball stadium? Youre kidding me right? When was the last time the Mets were sold out come September? Please. The real stadium is the one they already had it in.
@TheNYRBlog If half empty stadiums during baseball are "real" then I guess CitiField would classify.
Do you really think 45,000+ are willing to fork out the cash to go to another one next year? I had a blast, but I don't believe holding more outdoor games in this market so soon would be a good idea at all!
The funny thing is that the Rangers need to be in both as nobody wants to see the devil/islanders. so the great thing is its an away game and so much more seating that its like having a home crowd. I say do it. benefits us and makes dolan happy
Pretty sure they don't even play baseball at CitiField, at least each time I've been there to catch the Mets they hadn't ...
Don't be a douchey fan who says what teams you HAVE to root for. I'm Yankees/Jets/Rangers. I know it's odd but that's who I root for. Deal.
Wait they didn't build Yankee stadium just for the Rangers outdoor games? Who watched baseball? Talk about being bored as hell going from hockey season to boring ball in the summer... Have it at met life stadium! Now that'd be cool! And loud.
@TheNYRBlog kev they could play there all summer, the is no major league team there since 1986.
They played at the best ball park in baseball, now you want them to play at the worst ballpark really even the rangers couldn't help that place become a winning ballpark
@TheNYRBlog itll probably be easier to get a hockey rink in there. They don't have any of those pesky monuments or trophies to get in the way
CHA-CHING! With the super overpriced tickets and all the money that everyone made, exept about 100 outdoor games next year. CHA-CHING!I you suck bettman kiss my @ss
@TheNYRBlog you made my day, bud. Hope this happens at some point
I'm a Yankee fan for the most part, but Citi Field>>> New Yankee stadium.there, I said it. New Yankee stadium sucks.
The NHL should absolutely take a cue from baseball and their inter-league play. When it started, it was awesome, the excitement was great and the players were really pumped for the games, particularly Mets V. Yanks. Now, it's waned quite a bit and the NY players/managers find it more of a hassle than anything else because, realistically, it's just another mid-season game. Every 2 years, at most, would be the way to go, if not longer for the NHL. Otherwise it just becomes another over-hyped mid-season game.
btw Team USA is announcing their Captain and alternates today at 1pm for anyone that cares... Would imagine Cally will at least be donning an A.
Sound like a closet islander fan to me. U either like the favorites Rangers/Giants/Yankees, or the underdogs Mets/Jets/Isles. No mixing n matching
if we absolutely have to trade him, may I ask why not (maybe I am a bit Nieve)
Dominique or Gerald? Although I'm not sure they care much about hockey.
@mando24179 You mean the Wilpons?
Damn auto correct.... on my smartphone. ... the wilpons......aren't deserving. ... send the game to Met Life
@mando24179 believe it or not, that would be a great location for NJD v. PHI, or NJD v. PITT, or NYR v. NJD (obvi) or even NJD v. WAS...more geographic possibilities based on proximity of other teams and their fans
