The New York Rangers (24-21-3) lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning (28-15-4) by the score of 2-1, tonight. For a box score, go to Yahoo! Sports.
...listen, I'm never happy when the Rangers lose, but overall I can't kill them for the effort tonight. They generated offense, caused turnovers and played a physical game. Unfortunately, sometimes you run into a goaltender who has your number in the midst of a Vezina Trophy caliber season.
...now having said that, I felt like their battle level wasn't as high as we've seen the last 10 games. Which is unacceptable considering they were facing a team playing the second game of a back-to-back. Tonight was one of those nights that the top players needed to find a way to find the back of the net and they didn't.
...and we have a late Oscars entry for best male actor: Ben Bishop. Completely changed the outcome of the game.
...have I mentioned that Del Zotto's problems are mental? Didn't look very comfortable on the left side on that second goal.
...reports were that AV was irate after that second goal. Wonder if it was due to the defensive breakdown or he ran out of gum.
...i could have sworn Stepan ended his holdout. (H/T reader JPG)
...i thought the fourth line was real good tonight, not sure why none of them saw more than nine minutes. Could have used a couple of extra "car bombs" out there.
...i tell you what, if Richards keeps this up, I might actually feel bad when he's bought out this offseason. Actually, no I won't.
...god, I love that set play for Kreider off the left wing boards. Speaking of Kreider, kudos to him for being the only Ranger who tried to get Bishop off his game by chopping down on his glove hand in the second period. Would have liked to see Carcillo jawing with the Lightning goaltender a bit.
...a month ago, I would have thought Stralman was a shoo-in to be re-signed this offseason. Not so sure anymore.
...vintage Girardi/McDonagh as they combined for 50 minutes of ice time and nine blocked shots. Girardi is making Rangers management's decision to either trade or re-sign him very difficult.
...Nash wasn't aggressive going to the net and he didn't generate offense. Funny how that happens.
...god damn power play not able to convert in a big spot!!!! Can you say officially spoiled?
...despite not having their 'A' game tonight, the Rangers would have run the current third seed in the Eastern Conference out of the building without Bishop's heroics. Which is further proof that the Rangers are just as good, if not better than, every team in the East not named Penguins or Bruins. If they can add a scorer at the deadline, this team could be dangerous.
...off tomorrow then Detroit in town Thursday night.
Post game Vino...
my only issue ,that fat bastard took up every square inch of the net.you need a shoehorn to get the puck past him !
mental and physical intensity was not there !!! just because you're not playing a physical team , ala philly, doesn't mean you DON'T have to play PHYSICAL !!!! their mental ability to go into games absolutely SUCKS. and yes, is stepan thinking that because he didn't get what he wanted for a contract he doesn't have to play as hard??
@TheNYRBlog or sometimes del zaster strikes again lol combination of both still gotta love the way they are playing over this recent stretch
Del Zotto needs to go. No apologies. I didn't even see the game last night. He has mental lapses EVERY game that lead to scoring chances for the opposition -- this has been going on even while he has stepped up the offensive side of his game over the past few weeks. He and J. Moore on a defensive pair are just suicide.
I agree that Nash is not what he used to be and thus a cost-benefit analysis of his contract will certainly render a guilty verdict (mixed metaphors for the win!). I don't know of anyone but the starstruck who ever thought he was in the same class as the Kanes, Crosbys, Malkins, of the world. Perhaps Sather is one of those starstruck. If so, woe be to us. I still hold out hope, however, that he can get back to where he was when we first got him. That player is FAR better than what we've seen. And he has shown glimmers.
Rather than damn Nash for all eternity, or raise him on a pedestal, perhaps we should wait and see while we still have him. I have to say, I doubt many other teams would give us fair value for him right now.
Stepan is another one. He's had a bad year, but, how quickly we all forget, he was our best skater last year for much of the truncated season. For all his invisibility offensively this year, he still does the little things that made him such a promising 2-way forward last year. His backchecking is crafty and relentless. But yeah, his game has quieted to a whisper this year. The question is, however, which of the 2 Stepans is the real one?
Patience, young padawans.
@ Josh...Dude, what the hell are you watching? Not ready to throw his success over the last few weeks out? Nash is an illusion at his best and you are a kool-aid drinker. He has NEVER been a dominant power forward in crowded ice. He is....GOOD...at best. He may have ONCE been really good, but he is not that now. How many strong plays on the puck do you see him make nightly...weekly...fuck...MONTHLY??? THAT is a star???? You see one or two strong plays a month and it's all good?? Damn...can I work for you?? (...fucking Ranger fans and their stars) That is why we got him for a couple of average players. However, while there are still kool-aid drinkers like you out there the best move would be to move him while perhaps one idiotic GM thinks he is GREAT. YOU presented the argument yourself. He is NOT Ovi, or Crosby...BUT HE IS GETTING PAID CLOSE TO WHAT THEY GET PAID! THAT is why you move him...so you are not overpaying for merely GOOD while hamstringing your team contractually. It is the same principle to why you DON"T sign Hank for seven years. But I'm sure you swallowed that move as easily as you do any criticisms of Nash. Look dude, think of it as a meal. If you have 50 bucks to spend you damn well better reserve most of it for the steak and not 38 dollars for a GOOD potato...no matter how much you like Nash Potatos. (see what I did there...like that?)
I mean, come on. the team is looking great right now. Hank coming around big time, and moving the puck like a bunch of...well, vancouver canucks. Top 10 PP, are you kidding me!?!?! This is fun to watch. look, playing an extra 16 games in spring would be nice, but at this point I'm content having a fun team to watch over the next 40 games. We have come a LONG way.
They put up 34 shots on a goalie who has a save % of .950 over his past 15 games and .937 on the season. They had a ridiculous call go against them that completely changed the momentum of the game and they had a brain fart that led to a bad goal. They played a team where there was no emotion and actual cordialness (Brewer apologized to Cally for lifting his stick, Cooper commended Boyle for letting up on Hedman). They played decent and got beat by a Vezina candidate 2-1. Sorry, I just don't think that's reason to blow up the team. Oh, by the way, wasn't this a perfect opportunity for the "Carcillo effect" to inject some life? But like the rest of the team, I'm not going to damn him over 1 games. Move on people, losses happen.
Alright. Now that I've had a night to sleep on the game. Still disappointed. But. Holy shit some of these comments. We've played our best hockey of the year and we have one game with a TERRIBLE 9 seconds and all of a sudden Nash is slow and not moving again, Hank is a mess, Del Zotto has to be run out of town.
Nash didn't have his best game, but he isn't Crosby. He isn't Ovechkin. He never will be. That doesn't take away from the fact he is, easily, the most talented player on this team. I'm not willing to throw his success over the past few games out the window cause he struggled one game.
Hank is fine. He came up big in spots when we needed him. That power play goal by the Lightning...it's tough to stop a shot you can't see. It shouldn't have even been a power play anyway but Rooney seems to suck something mighty awful. That second goal our defensemen have to be aware that the Lightning have a faceoff play that they will try. Kucherov is a skilled player and made a damn nice move on Hank.
My defense of Del Zotto won't last long as this simply wasn't his best game. That being said, he really has had a solid stretch of games for the first time all season and he did make a few nice plays. I'm not gonna remember him for that one terrible read on the second goal. If this one bad game turns into several bad games then...well...how the hell do you expect us to trade him without any value?
@TheNYRBlog i only have a problem w 1 guy on this tm right now And thats Stepan playing w 2 monster n talented wingers, has to produce more
Good point about Stralman. When we brought him in, everybody thought he had no chance in Torts' system but he excelled. Now we bring in an offensive coach and his game drops? Figured it would be the other way around. Although people want to complain about Girardi and Moore over the first few months, Stralman has been just as bad or worse. No offense, no grit in the defensive zone. Maybe Torts' system simplified his game.
Stepan again was a major disappointment. The guy really looks like he left all his skills at home when he finally reported. He swings and missed more than Dave Kingman. Nash after having played a strong 5 or 6 games reverted to the perimeter player we have seen all season. He didn't drive the net once all game. Lastly MDZ is a complete moron. I don't think it a matter of confidence, I think it's a matter of him being plain STUPID. I'm sure AV wanted to reach in and pull his little pea brain out after that second goal. Having said all this the team as a whole did not play a bad game. Bishop was outstanding. Still can't believe team USA took Howard over him.
More proof of why Del Zotto needs to run out of town. Not only did they do that exact same play 3 shifts earlier as AV stated, AV warned the team about that play before the game. IF you can't get your head out of your ass on a faceoff to prepare a play that you have already seen and warned about, then it's time for a new job. Maybe a nice office cubicle job will suit DZ better. Not for nothing but both of goals would have been stopped by Hank last year. Not happy with his play. Big players were a no show tonight and the Refs could not press the F - U RANGERS button fast enough tonight. No interference called when Hank get's blasted; Cally's high stick when it's lifted by a defender, and the list goes on. These refs called such a one sided game that it allowed the Lightning to seal the deal w/ their goalie's top performance. Move on to detroit!
When we're 8-2-1 coming in to the game on a 3 game roll, you have to live with getting beat by a goalie on occasion. Hank's been doing it to teams that deserved to beat us for the past 8 years. Bishop is now 5-0-0 with 4 goals allowed in his 5 starts against the Rangers. Seems like our scorers need to watch some tape on his tendencies.
As for AV being furious after the second goal, from the NY Post:
“It’s something that we talked about [Tuesday] morning and showed on video,” coach Alain Vigneault said of the set play the Lightning (28-15-4) run off the faceoff, the two goals coming just nine seconds apart, tying a Lightning franchise record. “They did the exact same play three shifts before, as a matter of fact.”
The Rangers were due for a letdown after the emotional win over the Flyers...no enemies, nobody to hate on the Lightning...That said, if I was Sather, I would trade Nash for Evander Kane in a NY heartbeat; Kane brings a different element to the game-nasty, will fight for teamates and can score as well
The biggest disapointment is that some of them seemed to give up in the last half of 3rd.Not a good sign going forward here. The shots they tried were good but goals don't always come from good shots. With a giant like Bishop they needed to get greasy.also the refs were affecting the game-gotta call some of those penalties.
@TheNYRBlog Do u think Richards gets bought out regardless? If Cally&G are re-signed theres no way he stays but which FAs would we go for?
This is a great point. The intensity needs to show up game in and game out regardless if our opponent is physical or not. We need to make it a habit to set the tone no matter the opponent.
Why are all these comments coming off my post? I don't see the relevance in any of them to what I posted.
Nash gets bashed no one even mentions that bum Stepan...... Nash had to play with that enigma every game. So no one seems to notice nash doing his job and stepan. Nash is a finisher. And most games he is setting up Kreider. Cause Stepan can't do shit right....Nash played better when Zucc was on his line...
get him a real play making center..... Nash and kreider would say thank u...
I said past few games, not past few weeks. You can call me out, that's fine. I expected it. But at least read what I said when calling me out. He hasn't played as well as we had hoped and in no way is he worth the money he is getting paid, that's something I won't deny. As for what I'm watching, I'm watching a team who struggled the first few months which pissed us all off, then got a nice streak of games where a lot of the team played well, and then had one bad game where everyone is now saying WELL SHIT LET'S BLOW THIS FUCKING TEAM RIGHT ON UP NOW. Also, notice how I never used the word star...that sir, is your word. I said he's the most skilled player on the this which is because he is the most skilled player on this team. When he does make strong moves with the puck it's unlike anything I've seen before. Unfortunately, this season, that has been few and far between. If any GM makes an offer for Nash that would net us in some younger players with a higher ceiling, then sure, why not do it?! But do you hear any rumors popping up? No. So I'm just going to root for the players we have since what the hell else am I supposed to do? Have a fantasy about Evander Kane in a Rangers uniform? Hope that Gretzky and Messier unretire and play like they used to play on this team? No. Because that's not who I am. I'm going to root for the team put on that ice, whether I like them or not.
As for the Hank contract, I wasn't okay with the length of it. I'm still not okay. So instead of bringing something up and putting words in my goddamn mouth (seriously, why the fuck does everyone feel the need to do that), focus on one argument at a time.
And don't forget how particularly god awful that ice was last night. . How many far side passes just bobbled all over the place?
@JoshKayeso how many more times this year do you think DZ should continue to play as long as he keeps having mental breakdowns that result in odd man rushes that result in goals against? Just because he puts together 4 - 5 consistent games with only minor mistakes doesn't mean he is worth keeping especially given what is expected out of him. as for his trade value...teams have been putting in offers for him even when he was a healthy scratch. The NHL is a league where you can struggle with one team, get traded to another and become a superstar. DZ will not be a superstar here.
As for Hank, my only comment was that Hank of yester year stops both of those goals. He's been playing well but just not at the caliber of past seasons.
He is what he is. .. We can't make him into something he had never been... He had a good yr last yr. But makes u think... wad it the potential showing or was it cause he was a free agent.... 8 pick the later... Stepan has been an underachiever since being called up...everything was potential.....the guy holds onto the puck to long and doesn't have a killer instinct.. around the puck.... He has talent bit lacks that extra vision and hockey brain.
. If he could only have Zuc passing, hockey sense and passion we would have a great player.... all that list cannot be taught u either have it or u dont..
He looked extremely lazy last night....that's why I say DONT over rate the players....quick to say yeah let's resign this guy or that guy.....If that were true Stepan would have a 5.5 million contract for 5 yrs as some of u called for....
I think the second goal Hank went for the poke check and missed. Once you do that you're screwed.
@awesomebulldog Yes, I think he is gone no matter what.
agree..in that Stepan sucks! Still...my point is critical...NASH for the money they pay can not simply be a finisher. If he is that...then the Rangers are severely overpaying to the point where it hurts the team by virtue of opportunity costs.
Sather has in place "A Star Studded Strategy" as the way to win the Cup"....which worked well when an organization could spend whatever it wanted to get the players it wanted. Cap structure says you can't do that anymore and the way to win now is to have excellent goal tending first......develop a solid defense and fill your forward line with the best two way players available within the Cap system.
To win you look to strategy first and your players and coaches become the tactical components to bring The Strategy alive. As is so well pointed out a player has to be judged on How much value does he deliver to his team in return to how much value($) the team delivers to him? Put Nash-Richards-Zucc against that standard of judgment and I believe it is quite revealing...is it not?Add that same standard relative to other players making the same kind of $ and the value they bring to their teams.
We will never win The Cup with our star studded strategy because The Cap system will never allow us to $ attract the stars away from other teams. Sather and Dolan think they can!....and of course teams now are locking in their own good 2 way players and preventing them from free agency.
Haha..Points taken..all..and good ones. I actually like the way they are playing right now too and am not terribly upset about a loss. That said, I am always hard on them when they don't bring A+ effort. That is just me...the way I played...and the way I do everything. (including...apologizing for putting words in your mouth!!) It seems we agree on Nash more than we disagree, same with Hank. As for "blowing up the team"...hardly. The Sox didn't blow up their team when they purged 2 legitimate stars who they thought they could never win with (Gonzo and Crawford). They did however gain flexibility to bring in a bunch of players of lesser pedigree who were instrumental in bringing them a championship. THAT is the move I think the Rangers need to make with players like Nash, Cally, or Hank. (Not all...but you get the point)
Sidenote: We weren't the ones who gave Nash that contract. We kinda just took it in and then wound up trading Gaborik so it was kind of like swapping Gabby out for Nash.
Sidesidenote: Ovi is making 9.538 per year...sheesh...least we ain't paying Nash that
Sidenote: Ovechkin is making 9.538 million per...whoa...least we ain't paying Nash that...
He played 7 minutes. He played 9 in Philly. So are you trying to say that those 2 minutes make the difference between Carcillo being the grit and sandpaper savior versus him being irrelevant?
He also had another scoring chance where the puck actually went in but was negated by a Dom Moore hand pass.
Why do you think this comment was posted just about you? This is about the majority of people here after this game. I'm not saying Del Zotto is worth keeping. I'm saying that if we want to actually get something DECENT for Del Zotto, we need to let him play and find his game. With the past few games his value is getting higher. How do you know what sort of offers we were getting for Del Zotto while he was a healthy scratch? Are you in the rooms when Sather is making calls? How do you know if they're worth accepting or not? Basing this on the rumors that go around are silly since they're just that - RUMORS.
@TheNYRBlog Keep G but being harsh I think we should trade Cally for a good return by the deadline, great team guy but injury after injury
Yes...and for once this season I am enjoying watching the Rangers play. Kreider is awesome. Pouliot has been great. The entire Zucc line is just playing good, legitimate hockey. Finally! I just don't like how the Rangers have spent on their top end and think it has to be addressed.
Cause AV is clueless....a fight can absolutely change momentum....the kid was awarded the Broadway hat that night... His teammates appreciated it..... why can't the coach?
That's the first time I even said that statement...... so I have no clue. What ur talking about that I use it every time.....
Here is the point. What we do know is they weren't used properly. .... speculation on saying what they wouldn't do. Due to past shifts is a reaxh... how many times they have been flat and all of sudden. Boom they wake up in the third period. .. u can't summer is a game from playing 2 periods or 5 shifts....only fact again is they didn't play enough....We both don't know what they could or would have done...
Saying they wouldn't.. is a reach
Especially from how carcillo had scoring chances. So did boyle...on a few of those ineffective shifts u claim happened.... ..
@gravey94@mando24179My observation is the 4th line was not energized because their coach did not tell them to be energized. The coach coaches the team on how they should play. That is why the Coach gets payed a salary. It was pretty clear to all (regardless of whether you liked him or not) there was never any doubt about energy or the lack of it with Torts.
AV's coaching history is not about high energy and unless he gets electro shock treatments it never will. When McIlrath took on a major heavyweight in his first NHL bout, All of us cheered the kid's courage in stepping up fpr his teammates. AV publicly said he is not so sure that fighting can create a major momentum shift for a team.....I know what I thought about those comments I wonder what the kid thought about those comments?
I'm not getting into this discussion here mando but you seriously have to stop with the whole "if you know anything about hockey" argument. You use it every damn time. It's not a good statement and it really just pisses people off more. If you want to state a case, state it. Don't try and insult the intelligence of another person. It's fucking rude.
Yea, I kinda know a little about hockey, it's the sport where they use the big orange ball and the quarterback protects home plate right? My point is, the 4th line was not energized on any of its other shifts so expecting them to be energized on 3 phantom shifts is a big reach.
Look man if u know anything about hockey..... u know a coach had to use his 4th line effectively. ...especially in certain points in a game to set a tone. Push back. Send a message. Spark the team
That was not done last night and yes 3 shifts makes diffrence... one of those could have been to start the 3rd period and wake everyone up and get the fans into it. .... but it wasn't done...
A coach knows when to do that. And it very clear. AV doesn't
He contradicts himself... saying we play 4 lines but in the game he doesn't. Especially when we are flat.. With no energy
Really hate to break it to you but there's not a regular player in the NHL that averages 30 second shifts. Most are close to a minute, so even being generous that's another 3 shifts. And what you're trying to tell me is that even though he did squat to energize his team on the previous 13 shifts, somehow he would magically come to life in those 3 shifts he never took. Go ahead, explain that to me.
Absolutely does 2 mins is 4 more shifts. .which he barely saw the ice in the 3rd.. Also it's not only the playing time. It's when u play them..... that's the key.. that 4th line should have started the 2nd period to jump start us
. If i have to ex plain that to u..... i don't know what else to tell u
That's what I am saying. They generated chances and we're not used correctly...... for the 4th line they play pretty good...Boyle had chances and so did carcillo
@JoshKaye@calithirteen I didn't say the comment was directed squarely at me but since you did comment on something I had, I figured I throw in my 2 cents. I get what your saying and respect your opinion about letting DZ play to improve his worth but honestly, how much does his value suffer when he makes bonehead plays like last night. They are just rumors but there is now way Sather has not been shopping him around and taking offers this whole season
