Last night, Michael Del Zotto made his Nashville Predators debut in, where else, Vancouver against the John Tortorella-less Canucks. The Predators won the game 2-1.
Del Zotto played just 13:15 and didn't see a shift on the power play. Del Zotto chipped in with two blocked shots and one shot on goal while playing alongside rookie phenom Seth Jones.
Josh Cooper at The Tennessean noted that Del Zotto played a mostly mistake free game.
Here's Nashville coach Barry Trotz on Del Zotto's first game with the Predators (via The Tennessean)...
“I liked a lot of things he did. He had good compete for me, his puck management was really good. Especially since he hadn’t played with us. I was really happy with his effort.”
Del Zotto said this about his debut...
“Getting a win in the first game with a new team feels great. They put me in positions I could play, and I felt great tonight.”
...i can't emphasize this enough. There is a good chance that Del Zotto could figure it out in Nashville. He'll be learning under one of the best offensive defenseman in the league in Shea Weber while being paired with a dynamic young blueliner. But Rangers fans need to keep in mind that he was never going to figure it out in New York. He knew the organization lost confidence in him which made him lose confidence in himself.
...it's always been mental for Del Zotto. Now that he'll actually be getting a "clean slate" with a new organization, he'll likely be able to relax while playing in an almost stress free environment with low expectations. Listen, it could be a lot worse. Imagine if he went to an Eastern Conference team and figured it out? That would have been a nightmare scenario.
There's also been a lot of debate on whether Kevin Klein was enough value in return for Del Zotto. My personal opinion is that it was. Especially after seeing how other teams were so hesitant to give up assets for Del Zotto.
According to Darren Dreger at TSN, the Leafs had interest in Del Zotto and there were some talks with the Rangers regarding a trade including Jake Gardiner but the Rangers wanted Cody Franson. Dreger added that the Leafs were ultimately scared away by Del Zotto's inconsistency.
Finally, Bruce Garrioch at the Ottawa Sun notes that the Senators held several discussions with the Rangers about Del Zotto but a trade was never realistic because the asking price was D Marc Methot and another prospect in Binghamton. Methot has been a healthy scratch for Ottawa the last two games.
...welp, as you can see there wasn't much of a market for Del Zotto. Sather couldn't get a first round pick nor young defensemen with potential. Hell, Sather couldn't pry a guy who's been a healthy scratch for Del Zotto's services.
...i think Sather ended making what was likely the best deal on the table and even if Klein doesn't succeed in New York, I think the Rangers did well if for no other reason than it was addition by subtraction.
Ridiculous trading a guy when his value is at his lowest . Why not include him is a package as part of a larger deal , Sather is a retard...... Just a horrible deal all around , and justifying it as " we get a guy with a reasonable contract for 4 years" , gimme a break
that's a headline for someone playing their first NHL game: played 13 minutes, didn't f--k it up too much.
His attitude and off ice behavior......was on him. He gave this organization every reason to lose confidence.....His play.... dictated his fellow players and management to the fans....helped in the loss of confidence in him.....As far as we heard he was upset when they sat him out of games.... is he in denial or delusional of how shifty he performed... let alone all the chances he got compared to others........ex last yr Kreider and now Miller
Fuck him. Let him take his ball and go somewhere else...that shit is ALL on him. Man up Del Zero and be accountable
Good luck to him. No use regreting, feeling smug or thinking about Del Zotto anymore. It is history. Having second thought or speculating how great he might be is moot... let's move on....
"They put me in positions I could play." Does that mean there are situations that Del Zotto doesn't think he can play? What positions was he playing in? Prone on the bench? What kind of an athlete admits he can't play in certain roles? I just have to remind myself that he is now a Predator.
del zotto may eventually get some offense into his game, but he will never change defensively. and he is not smart enough to improve his game to the level we all thought he could get to a few years ago.
Oh and back to the topic at hand, I think Sather got a steal for Klein and he is the type of guy we need for the playoffs. He reminds me a bit of Sauer.
I feel like the past two games we got robbed out of potential points on two plays. 1st, Kreiders ill advised penalty, and 2nd is the lucky goal by steen.
You can say all you want about how the team played for the entire game. But if these two incidients dont occur the rangers could be atleast walking away with 2 points.
This reminds me of earlier in the year when the team was around .500 and they were playing well but they werent catching any breaks.
Lets hope things turn around fast because our division is way too close
We watch all these games and it seems to come down to some mistake that comes late that decides the outcome. I think we traded a guy that makes those mistakes for one that doesn’t. Let’s see where that takes them.
Anyone who scouted Del Zotto I'm sure saw everything that we did. The only reason to trade for him (and keep him) would be to gamble on his offensive potential and the more general possibility that he could change.
Did anyone hear this? http://espn.go.com/espnradio/play?id=10339809 At 5:31 LeBrun admits that after the trade he got two unsolicited texts from Western Conference GMs that said "I can't believe the Rangers got their hands on Klein"... to which Strang said "Really???"... Strang is an idiot by the way. She keeps saying Klein is a 6th or 7th Dman.
thats funny guy makes no real mistakes and one shot on goal and 2 blocks is a good game, used to be a goal and an assist is a good game, sums up del zaster in a nutshell
Good luck to him. Klein was steady, but the biggest thing I noticed was that Moore seemed to have more offensive jump. Not sure if it's moving back to his natural side or the fact that he has a stay-at-home guy, but it could be interesting to see how he progresses.
Those of you like me that wanted Thorton... its over. He got extended for 6.75 a year, and Marleau got 6.5 a year. Guess thats what it looks like when people want to keep playing with an organization. They take a small hometown discount.
It was addition by subtraction for the Rangers. I watched the Nashville last night and yes, Del Zotto played mistake free, but he also contributed little. I saw Klein make at least 3 strong defensive plays last night that may have otherwise ended up in the net if Del Zotto was back there. If Del Zotto matures and improves so be it.
@Wallace1 He was a good defenseman who did not live up to his expectations of being great. No sense trying to analyze what he says to see whether he knows what he is talking about. He is history.
Seemingly. For those reasons you listed im glad he is gone. I really dont understand the people that come on the blog and say that he wasnt that bad. Uummmph. Huh, what?
@AlbertMaddalena The outcome of the game came down to one thing, Goal keeping. The 8.5 million a year guy losing to a guy who is making half that much. Those are facts.
Agreed on Moore. He seemed pretty excited to be back on the left side during his interview and it showed in his play. Trying to create offense with DZ out there was scary at best I suspect. Now it is clearly his job to provide offense and he can expect his back to be covered. Should be fun! Also would not be surprised to see DZ find his game in Nashville. Also agree that he was pretty much done here.
I don't know if those values are necessarily a "discount", but I guess with the cap going up, its all relative. The big thing is the years. Two over 30 guys taking 3 years deals. Very considerate of them. Meanwhile we'll be paying Hank and Richards until their on LTIR for arthritis....
Damn. Big advocate of going after JT in FA. Oh well. 3 years at 6.5m is a great deal for SJ.
I saw that. So disappointing. I had fantasies about Thornton on a line with Nash and Kreider. What a heavy, skilled and fast line!!!!
marleau got 6.66
You mean if they don't play in NY?
@johnAMIRANTESrugYou'd always like more, but I don't think anyone was offering picks or at least high enough picks to get equal value.
He was horrendous.......only thing that's a bright spot in his whole ranger career. Is when he laid out Neil from Ottawa...other than that he was horrendous
@IcyCupNo - he wasn't that bad..... he was worse!
Even with the expectation you inherit with a contract like that, I actually wouldn't blame Hank for that one. Nevertheless, he does owe this team brilliance after a miserable start to the season. But I agree that if he was at his best, he could have stole us that game.
I dont really care for the shit he said about the rangers but jumbo joe is THE playmaking center in the league and has been for awhile. Too bad. Kudos to him and marleau for taking less.
