While most trade rumors involving Dan Girardi link him to the Boston Bruins, a dark horse contender is coming on strong.
Elliotte Friedman at CBC Sports reports that the Anaheim Ducks are interested in the 29-year old defenseman's services. Friedman does also mention the Bruins interest.
Piggybacking on that report, The Fourth Period notes that the Rangers would be looking for a young forward as well as a young defenseman from the Ducks in return for Girardi. The names the Rangers are believed to be interested are defenseman Sami Vatanen as well as one of forwards Kyle Palmieri, Patrick Maroon and Rickard Rakell.
...i'm not going to lie to you guys and act like I know much about any of the Duck players mentioned, but from what little research I've done, Vatanen and Palmieri (both 22-years old) seem like the players with the most upside. Unfortunately, both players are very under-sized, so while they might be able to succeed in the Western Conference, you never know how they'll acclimate themselves in the much more physical Eastern Conference. I'd much rather see Sather try to pry the 6' 1", 206lb Emerson Etem from Anaheim as part of any deal for Girardi.
...if the Rangers are going to trade Girardi, I'm going to need at least a Grade A prospect as well as a first round draft pick. He's still in his prime and, despite his struggles this season, has a proven track record in the NHL.
Larry Brooks at the New York Post says the Rangers need to decide whether Girardi is more important to their success as a first pair defenseman or a trade chip.
Brooks adds that despite speculation, the Bruins have not called the Rangers about Girardi.
...as I've mentioned on the blog, it makes sense for Sather to explore every option when it comes to Girardi. If he can somehow pry a King's ransom in return for the shot blocking assassin, then he has no choice but to trade him. But if the price isn't right, keeping Girardi and re-signing him for five-years at $4.5M per isn't a bad consolation prize.
...i still maintain that Girardi's future could be tied to Del Zotto. If Sather can find a taker for the embattled defenseman, I don't see how he can also move Girardi with all the question marks (ie Staal's health, Stralman's free agency, Allen & McIlrath's development) on defense for the Rangers going forward.
Speaking of Del Zotto, Friedman also notes that the San Jose Sharks could be a stealth team for his services. Friedman notes that the Sharks scouted him pretty closely during the Ryane Clowe trade talks last season.
...you didn't think I'd get through an entire trade rumor post without mentioning Del Zotto, did you?
Perhaps we all might need to ask ourselves how do UFAs view The Ranger organization.....The Ranger Coach.....and the present Ranger team? Is this a place where they want to come and win a Cup vs their present team?
He is not worth the money he wants
He isn't a shut down dman no speed and wouldn't hurt a fly
Yet every one is hitting him so get a lot for him otherwise sign him reasonably and trade him at next years deadline to a team with young talent
Lol u guys r nuts. If they can sing him 4 yrs under 5 mil its gettin done. If not hes getting moved for a defensive prospect and a forward prospect the caliber of which is exactly what Anaheim is offering. I also don't feel like seeing Girardi shutting is down on the bruins for the next few years when they inevitably resign him if we move him there (cuz they don't take a giant shit on their personnel based off one mediocre season) Rangers will suck as long as fans continue to demand trades after every season we dont win a cup. Dont u get it, u got rick nash cuz all Dolan cares about is selling tickets and tv deals. Why do u think sather has job 4 life?
Stralman has been a more consistent D-Man the past two years than Girardi (who is lost without McD). In fact, I'd place Stralsy second on the depth chart to McD. He should be the priority to re-sign. The guy is incredibly underrated (save that breakaway he gave up last night).
Forget Anaheim ... Paging Glen Sather! Please pick up the phone and call the Bruins. Offer Girardi for Matt Fraser and Joe Morrow and see what they say.
Johnson good offensive.def ..not tough at all.. he won't drop the.gloves. Has anyone here watched hockey. In .70s 80s 90s ??? U.need to protect ur teammates...Fighting IS and ALWAYS will.be a part of the.sport because.it polices itself. WE as a team are horribly soft and whussiest team in NHL. Ashamed the other night against Pitt when Crysby put Mcdonough un headlock and roughed him.up and McD didn't do anything to help.himself. P @@@y!!! Unreal..tough teams win!!!
What is the attraction with Sather and these undersized defensemen? He's interested in Avalanche Tyson Barrie who is 5'10 and now Duck's Sami Vatanen who is 5'10. When the hell are NY fans ever going to get our 6' + crease clearing, bad ass, defenseman we have been waiting for, forever?
I understand your point but this team will not win the Cup. This is a flawed roster and they have no sure-fire 1st or 2nd line forwards in the organization. They have maybe 3 dmen in the organization that will be playing in the NHL - McIlrath(jury still out), Allen and Skeij(Still at least 2-3 years away). They need to cash in some chips to improve this roster. If the offer is good, trade Girardi. I like him but he's our best trade chip. If they get a great offer for Cally, trade him. If they get a good offer for Stralman, trade him. You hear fans complain about this team and some complaints are true but resigning the same players isn't going to make them better. Sather's history in the draft is not good but he's shown to have the ability to make good trades(Mac). The way to improve this roster quickly is to trade a few important cogs and get multiple NHL ready players in here to address our shortcomings. This roster is average at best and free agency is not the way to go.
Correct .4 -5 years 5.5 - 6 Mil AAV .and that would be before he hits the UFA market. I'm saying that's what his market value will be. No yelling about "he's not worth that.." etc.... This is not an opinion but the reality of what he will get on his next deal.
Fair point. And ratings play a factor for sure. But solid teams/organizations make personnel choices based on projected value not past performance. Girardi hasn't been bad for one year, he's been bad since the playoff race in 2012 heated up. He used to be a mac truck back there. Hitting everything that moved and getting in passing lanes. He used to make solid break out passes and took hits to make plays. Now he plays flat footed and shys away from the contact he once thrived upon. Bottom line, he's proven himself too slow and not mean enough to compensate.
@TruBluEsp I prefer trading with Anaheim than Columbus... as far as the Bruins are concerned.... outside of Lucic and Chara, I'm not drooling...
Forget about the 70's, 80's and 90's ..... Did you see how Dubi raced to Tyutin's defense the other night when IKreider boarded him??? You might be able to get away with it in the regular season but no way in the playoffs. You need a tough team to get thru 4 rounds of playoff hockey. This group of Rangers will wilt in the playoffs
we have one, he's in Hartford
@MikeBlue Small man's complex?!!!
He's in the AHL learning how to play on the NHL level.
These are the type of guys AV wants for his system.....the Coach has to have alot of input here especially when he wants different players...
U can do it both ways... trades and prospects and picks... not resigning enigma of underachieving soft players
@TruBluEspI agreed with everything you said except getting multiple nhl ready players in to address shortcomings...its either one or the other, you blow up the team to get picks and prospects, or you look to resign vets and pick up a few missing pieces through trades or free agency. Right now there isn't enough high end talent that's gonna make it to UFA so my guess is blowing it up would be best. that said, all Dolan cares about is ratings so we will NEVER truly rebuild in NY until he sells the team
I will say it again... Girardi is NOT worth a 5 mill + deal... a GM would be smoking crack to offer that. When u have Orpik ad an UFA. And is hitter. Stand u up at the blue line type of dman....that is gonna be getting 5 to 6 mill. Why would anyone over pay for a soft as baby shit dman....
I would not resign h. People act like this guy won a few Norris cups or something. .. 3 yrs ago yeah. Now. Def NO. The dude stays away from contact. Doesn't defend his teammates let alone the goalie. Last time I seen him fight was 3 to 4 yrs ago and I am pushing it... If someone can't see he's not worth that money over those yrs.. . Something is wrong
I'd send an offer sheet to Orpik. ..4 to 5 @ 5.5 mil
Send Girardi packing for pics and prospects.... the guy had to have asked for over 5 mil at that meeting last week. That's why he is being shopped.
@Scott from SEC 224@JonMuroOh I agree 100% I'm saying the deal with the Rangers needs to be 4-5 for under 5 or they will need to move him at the deadline so as not to walk away with nothing. Some people on here are proposing trades for players that are just outrageous and will absolutely not happen. Other folks are ready to bury Girardi for a bag of pucks and suggest turning down a reasonable deal for under 5m. at that price he's a steal and will still have value in 2 years. There is literally no one else out there to realistically replace him with in the next 2 years (UFA,realistic trade etc.)
@GiveGartneraCup@JonMurodon't misunderstand me, I am not saying absolutely don't' move him. I'm saying you have two options and that's sign him to a deal that makes sense and doesnt handcuff them going forward, or move him for realistic prospects. Some peoples expectations are just not in the realm of reality. See my response to @Scott from SEC 224for expanded thought process
Sathers fascination with d men under 6 foot predates the hiring of AV. I would also guess that AV has almost no say in this.
@mando24179lol would have hated to see what u would have offered Getzlaf and Perry 2 years ago...I ask you who would you replace him with for under 5 mil? (realistically speaking)
Dude. How. About trying.... how's that instead of saying we cant....do this and that so sign this useless pansy Girardi... I'm not giving him a pay raise based on this yrs performance. We aren't the Yankees and paying u for what u did. How about paying him for what he is gonna do and by this yrs performance. Fuck that... send his Gump ass packing. Girardi isnt gonna help us get a cup right now next yr or the next. Whoever thinks that needs rehab and should never watch sports again
@mando24179i think you could get Kane and a pick...throwing Peluso or a prospect in seems unlikely
I'm probably not explaining myself properly. What I mean by "NHL ready" is a prospect in the AHL or Juniors who scouts feel is ready to play in the NHL, not a player currently in the NHL who has not performed up to expectations. Hope this clears up my stance. I also agree with you regarding Brassard. I've been one of his biggest backers on this blog. I Stepan but if the right deal comes along I'd trade him b/c I am sick with how soft he is.
@TruBluEspI hear you, but generally, swapping an under achieving NHL forward is only gonna get you back an under achieving NHL forward. Trading a viable asset for other NHL players only makes sense if you think the team is close and has an abundance of depth at certain position and lacks depth at another. It defeats the purpose to trade current assets for current assets instead of restocking the team with prospects and draft picks if you feel like the team is going nowhere fast. I would happily move Stepan for the right deal, but that deal would need to include a top six winger, and only because we already have to legit 2nld line centerman. to me there is no place for both Brassard and Stepan on this team. Stepan is a bit more proven, but Brassard has a higher ceiling. Neither are anymore than a #2 centerman though.
I hear what you're saying but I believe that a good GM can cash in his chips and get some young prospects along with players that are ready for the NHL. If I had any confidence with the organization's drafting skills I'd say get some picks too. Sidenote ... I'd trade Stepan too if the deal was overwheming
If you want us to disagree at some point ur gonna have to stop making so much sense ;D
personally I dont see NY as having the patience to ever see a real deal rebuild through.
I'm sure we're bound to disagree on something at some point! To quote Brandon Dubinsky " New York always wants the shiny new toy" and that's not just the Management. Trade Cally? Giradi? Hank? Really? Yes the reality of trading Girardi is possible but they aren't going to get rid of their core altogether. Do you think UFA's want to come into those situations? A sense of stability as a team is also something players, and their agents &their wives look at when signing. remember, regardless, they will be fucking rich. There are too many NHL 2014 GM's on this board. I Pay more attention to Cap Geek & TSN and realty in general.
@mando24179I said realistically? Orpik is likely getting more than Girardi let alone under 5 mil. Plus he is 33 years old you wanna bank that much cash on a 33 yr old who plays a physical game? Anyway he will be resigned b4 he hits UFA undoubtedly so again I ask you, who would you REALISTICALLY replace him with for under 5 mil
I rather sign Orpik. He can eat mins and have guys nervous coming into the zone.... they guy hits u like a guided missle... Girardi would turn the wrong way and let the guy skate buy. Go watch tape and u can post the last time Girardi stood someone up at the blue line with a devastating hit....hope e ur bored and have time cause it won't be at least the past 2 yrs. I m not ball kicking Girardi he has become Pyatt on defense... When Stralman is out playing u and does His hip check. Taking guy s out That's sad for Girardi
@Scott from SEC 224 you are my new best friend
Your evaluation of Giradi is understandable. That being said, he's a minutes eater & looked at as an asset. The question is, how much the Rangers value that asset or how much do other teams value that asset. If the return isn't a top notch D prospect, OR a top 6 forward, & a high pick (1st rounder, maybe 2nd rounder depending on the prospect) It's worth losing # 5 as a UFA if a value deal (4-5 Years at 5 Mil AAV) cannot be reached. D MEn that play 23 Min a game don't grow on Trees. Orpick, whom I like a s a player, will be 33 years old this summer & will be looking for a deal very similar if not more than Girardi's. 3-4 years at 5.5 AAV,. Amybe he goes 6 at 4.5 AAV but thats putting a lot of faith in a plus 33 year old player.
@GiveGartneraCup@mando24179 I don't know if I can get on board with your assessment of Strallman or Orpik. Orpik is dirty and recently got his head slammed on the ice by Shawn Thronton It was a dirty sucker punch, but I think he's more of a pest than a real intimidator.. As far as Strallman, there are moments over the last few years when I thought he was very underrated, and other moment where he looks unengaged and lost. I have no idea what to make of him, but I certainly would not value hm over cally, Stall or Griradi. Especially if you going on numbers or minutes logged
Players are scared of Orpik's hits. He makes a huge difference in a lineup. Reminds me of Scott Stevens the way he stands up at the blue line. But again, think Pitt will resign him. Blysma basically said he wouldn't go to sochi without him. As far as G and projecting future value you have to look at how his play has declined the last few years. Where as, I see Stralman out there and go, I don't even remember noticing this guy when he was on the ice 3 years ago. Now he makes the biggest hits, best break out passes and is Staal's safety net 9 times out of 10. You have to rank him above G. And Cally next (only because he is so injury prone). That is why, you low-ball Girardi on the contract. Because you have to resign those other two players.
@mando24179who is saying Girardi is worth 5mil+? and what is everyone's obsession with Orpik? The guy has scored exactly 4 goals in the last 5 years, he is the exact same size, plays less min and is four years older than Girardi. I just don't get it. In any case noone should agree with signing him to 5 years 5 mil + that's just not sensible
@JonMuro@GiveGartneraCup@Scott from SEC 224 I think Green & Girardi will get very similar deals . In fact, they'll set the market for each other if they go UFA.. The only way they don't get deals in the 4-5 Year .5.5 mil AAV range is if they "hometown discount it" And Girardi plays bigger minutes than Green (at least this year he does) Boyle & Del Zotto have almost no trade value. Mid level prospects & mid round prospects at best. I wouldn't pin the future on Kristo or Lindberg, they could very well be Nicklas Sunstrum & Chris Higgins . I think it's very very unlikely Callahn is moved unless the Rangers are completely out of a playoff spot come March. The Garden doesn't like waving white flags.
@GiveGartneraCupI completely understand you point, I just feel like if you feel a team is close but just needs to make a few adjustments, than you have to sign the best player available for that position that is affordable. I am nowhere near as down on Girardi as some folks on here, and I truly think he will still have value in 2 years at 4 mil. with the way these Gm's hand out cash that will look like a steal in two years when the cap goes up (See Carter, Jeff). It also others me that some people give up on players so fast (not saying you do, just what I see on the blog) I agree that its based on future expectation, but how do you judge what that is? No one can predict the future so you can only go on a players entire body of work. Sometimes you win sometimes you lose. I wonder if 2 years ago everyone here would have been calling for Getzlaf and Perry to be traded and labeling them as soft, washed up underachievers...
Not sure about Greene. Orpik, you're probably right because Blysma has a hard on for him. And ultimately I'd take Boyle short term over Girardi long term. Keep in mind Boyle almost made Team Canada while G wasn't even in the discussion. Bottom line, you don't lock a guy up for 4-5 years because there are no better options the next two. You lock him up because he's going to be even better in 3 years then he is now. Girardi will not be.
@GiveGartneraCup@JonMuro@Scott from SEC 224Dude lets be real, Matt Greene would be a steal but he is getting resigned by LA before he hits UFA. Same with Orpik and he is 4 years older than Girardi. Dan Boyle is ancient and he makes almost 7 million $ even if he takes a cut its not gonna be less than 4.5 and tha'ts a fact. In 2 years at 31 G will still have value. This is a very tough time for the rangers, there just isn't alot of moves to be made out there. The team is right in the middle of the pack. They're better than the bad teams like Fla and Buf, but no where near as good as Boston or Chi. you gotta decide if they are closer to being competitive with a few of the right pieces, or they need to blow up the team and rebuild from scratch. 2 years ago this team finished first in the east and made the finals, last year they made it to second round and Boston just beat us on depth. One bad season with a new coach and new system is not reflective of how good they could be with more time and the right pieces. At the same time they may very well need to blow up the team, and if that's the case, suggesting we sign Orpik or Boyle is just silly, and my point is proven even further. In 2 years Girsdri will be 31 and still have value. You can look at moving him again then, or he becomes a veteran depth defensive d-man in 3-5 years once the team can strengthen there top 6 with development from within like Kristo and Lindberg, plus be restocked with talent for dealing assets like Callahan, Byole and delzDtto for prospects or draft picks
There are actually a lot of really good UFA's this year on D. Matt Greene for LAK, Boyle from SJS (cheap/short bridge deal), Orpik plays hard (just ask Kreider). There are just too many other players to sign. I value Stralman and Cally above G. G will get overpaid somewhere else. 4 Mill is not a steal, it is a mistake
McDis 6/1 & Falk is 6'5. But Ray Borque was 5'11 and he was pretty darn good so i don't 100% buy in to that size logic.
