Mats Zuccarello will miss this morning's Qualification round game vs. Russia due to a hand injury he suffered blocking a shot against Austria on Saturday.
Norway's doctor said the pain was too great for the team to let him play.
As I posted yesterday, the hand, which is reportedly not fractured, is badly bruised and swollen. Zuccarello apparently also has trouble gripping his stick.
According to Dan Rosen at NHL.com, Zuccarello has his left hand wrapped this morning.
Zuccarello didn't register a point in three preliminary round games despite averaging 22 minutes of ice time.
...this is not good. Just have to hold our breath that it's nothing more than precautionary.
...i also wonder if the Rangers made a call to the Norway GM and demanded Zuccarello sit out a game in which his team had very little chance of winning even with him in the lineup.
Speaking of Zuccarello, he told Pat Leonard of the Daily News that he almost didn't take the Rangers offer last spring to return to the NHL...
“To be honest with you, when I got the offer here last year, I wasn’t even sure if I wanted to come back,” Zuccarello said. “I thought, ‘Do I want to go through this again?’ But then I talked to my little brother and my mom.”
Here's what Zuccarello's 16-year old brother told him...
"Don’t be stupid. Try again. Everyone wants to play in the NHL."
...so basically, a sixteen year old does a better job getting quality free agents to sign with the Rangers than Sather.
...the most encouraging part of this photo is no one is wearing a cast, in a sling or using crutches.
No Zuc ! Come on . Nash is fine . Nash is the most Useless ranger player . If Nash got hurt no problem . No consistency in his game . Nash is More streaky then Gaborik . If that's possible .
@TheNYRBlog rather he doesn't play
Steven Carollo, that's what reports out of Norway are saying. Guess we won't officially know until he gets back to New York.
Should we be concerned about Stepan? He must be consuming mass amounts of Caviar and Vodka while being benched. He could end up coming back to the NHL with a stuck up culinary point of view and a horrible attitude towards NY pizza. We may lose him to the KHL
@TheNYRBlog Awww….hope Zucc will be well soon.
@TheNYRBlog It appears he didn't have the extra hand protection on his Norway gloves that he does with New York. Could have helped him.
@TheNYRBlog not good
@TheNYRBlog great, first casualty
@TheNYRBlog What's your view on allowing NHLers to compete in the Olympics?
Tough to imagine in"Precautionary" considering its an elimination game in the Olympics, but thankfully Norway's days at the Olympics are about to end, leaving Zucc over a week to heal up.
I think Torts was the biggest questions mark for Zucc when he got the offer last spring. I think with AV at the helm he'll resign for another 2 or 3 years.
Lastly, with all this talk about injury concerns and the Rangers intervening, anyone know if Jim Ramsey is with Team Canada this year? I know he's been on their medical staff almost as long as he's worked for NYR, if not longer. Have to imagine, if nothing else, he's dropping in on these guys to keep tabs on whats going on and how other trainers are handling the injuries.
Gotta Imagine something is broken if he isn't playing against Russia in the Olympics. Anytime without him is really bad news for the rangers...
if it's not broken, hopefully he will be ready to play again when we get going in a week and a half.
According to Norwegian newspaper Zuccarello is not going to play against the Russians because of the hand injury..
@Not Callaqvist I've been eating Borscht non-stop since I got here, there's no turning back now
@Chris_Roche Of course he didn't.
@BPP94 Despite the Zucc situation, I love it.
@johnnyb3910 Yes, Rammer is with Team Canada again. I know it's an elimination game, but still not more important than the NHL season which he's getting paid to play in. Just hoping that if this happened during an NHL game he'd be playing through the pain.
@KreiderisTheChosenOne Reports say it's not fractured, but anything coming out of the European news media must be taken with a grain of salt.
@the_vreelander I think he does re-sign. It seems like he's really enjoying playing in the NHL this time around.
@TheNYRBlog ya I really hope so. Having a really good year.
Heard some guys on CBC Radio talking about moving hockey to the summer olympics, like basketball. Obviously its not a sumer sport, but its indoors, so who cares, and it wouldn't require the NHL to shut down. Plus anyone who is injured would end up missing training camp and the first few weeks of the season instead of the final weeks and potentially the playoffs.
Unless Sather plays hardball with him and offers a 1 or2 yr contract
