Lots of news from practice today as not only were the Ranger Olympians at the practice facility, but Marc Staal (back spasms) returned to practice for the first time in four days. However, he did leave practice early, but said he's ok.
Staal said he twisted his spine during Thursday's practice which led to the back spasms. He added that he'll see how he feels tomorrow before deciding his status for Thursday's game against the Blackhawks. Staal added that this same injury occurred during the lockout.
Marc Staal says he "twisted the wrong way" and hurt his back last Thursday "it locked up", but it's "loosened up" and feels better now #NYR— New York Rangers (@NYRangers) February 25, 2014
...sigh of relief Rangers fans as it doesn't sound like anything serious.
Of the Olympic participants who were at the practice facility today, only Derek Stepan practiced.
...makes sense considering he played less than five minutes during the entire Olympic tournament, so I'm sure he's rested and ready to go.
When asked about the recent trade rumors, Ryan Callahan stated that he's in a good spot mentally and can only control what's on the ice.
...Callahan can use every cliche in the book, but if you got him in a private moment I'm sure he'd admit that he can't wait for all this to be over. Although, if he really wanted to get this situation out of the way all he needs to do is drop his outrageous demands.
Meanwhile, Alain Vigneault announced that Cam Talbot will get the start Thursday night against Chicago.
...Vigneault said he wanted to speak with Lundqvist before making the decision, so I have to assume The King asked for an extra day off to rest.
...i love Hank and he is the key to the Rangers success going forward, but he can't ask out of Thursday's game. I get that it's an out of Conference game and they play back-to-backs vs. Flyers & Bruins this weekend, however, points are at a premium, so he needed to sack up and find his place in the crease when the season resumes Thursday night.
Finally, Vigneault reports that in the next 24 hours his staff will decide whether to go with the 12 current forwards (Dorsett practiced in full again today) or call someone up.
...i'm still against the idea of Dorsett being handed Zuccarelo's spot in the lineup just because he's the extra forward on the roster. I feel that JT Miller, hell even Danny Kristo, have a better chance of providing an offensive spark in the absence of the Hobbit.
Why wouldn't cally be in a good spot mentally? Either way he will soon be a very rich man. Id love to have his worries.
Kevin - You missed the biggest news of the day. RITCHIE GOT ENGAGED!!!!! http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/rangers/2014/02/brad-richards-second-annual-wines-of-the-world-event-at-stone-rose-lounge-a-success-
Av is making a smart move sitting hank, did u see how great Blackhawks did in Sochi? Also in the month of February, talbot has played 1 game and that was on the 6th and the games is on the 27th, so a backup will play twice this month. And it's not like hank is sitting at home, he must be ready to play incase of injury or talbot gets rocked, as a former goalie, you should understand
PS I tend to feel Miller makes sense playing on the Pouliot/Brass line BUT he didn't exactly go on a 10 game point streak earlier this season.
More reasonable is to think a versatile player like Dominic Moore would slot up to take that position. There's no real way to replace a team's top scorer but Moore is a smart player with enough speed to keep up.
I think it's fair to say Lundqvist has earned the right to do what he thinks is best as far as Thursday goes. Remember, human being, not robot.
Let the boy get the start. He needs experience playing against with the best clubs :D Can't wait for Thursdays game, I'd sure would like to drink !!!
We are all discussing Hank not starting as if we still have Marty Biron as our back up and it is a guaranteed loss. Talbot has proven all season that he is reliable. If Hank needs an extra day off, I say give it to him now opposed to much later in the season.
If it was up to Lundqvist he would play every single minute of every game. They're giving him Thursday off to be rested and shake off the jet lag so they he's ready to go against two EC teams that are more important. I guarantee you if we were facing the Bruins Thursday he'd be in net. Might as well give him a few more days to get settled back onto his routine.
This is why this site is such a joke "...Vigneault said he wanted to speak with Lundqvist before making the decision, so I have to assume The King asked for an extra day off to rest." ---- you then go on to base an entire premise and saying he needs to "sack up" b/c AV needed to talk to him. If you heard AV's comments yesterday, they were, "i'm more worried about the effects of travel"(jet-lag) and the reason for speaking to him was to see his jetlag fatigue, so maybe you need to "sack up" and do some due dillegence before calling out a goalie. 2nd, your understanding of Roster moves is rediculous. Dorsett is an NHL level player, you're insinuating the Rangers Healthy Scratch Dorsett to call up Miller or Kristo. Furthermore, if that was to happen, Dorsett would have to be sent down to the AHL and would need to clear waivers. SOO to bring up Miller or Kristo, you're suggestion is to risk losing Dorsett to waivers. Great analysis genius.
@Rangeranger I just think all the trade rumors would be wearing on him.
@rangermom Munn is going to be pissed!!!!!! No wonder he's been playing so well this season.
@jasonshyer Not a robot, but is being paid handsomely to win the Rangers games.
@EMoney2413 the only reason i would want hank to start is so that he doesnt let the sweeden loss linger any longer than it should...unless they want his first game back to be against an easier opponent...although im not sure the flyers will be that considering they had all of what, 1 player in the olympics?
@NYRBlueBlog Did you really just get on someone else's blog and call it a joke??? First of all, why are you here?? Second, why are criticizing another blog?? Just go back to your own blog. I may happen to agree with some of what you said, but the mere fact that you are here calling this blog "a joke", really casts aspersions on your credibility. Disagreeing is one thing, but disrespecting is something completely different. It would be like going into someone's house and telling them you don't like the decor. Just don't come in if you don't like it.
@NYRBlueBlogListen buster it's his blog, he can piss and type whatever he wants whether you like it or not :D You have to be tolerant!
@NYRBlueBlog couldn't agree more. Someone who just got his penis operated on shouldn't have the ball to tell someone to "sack up"...
@NYRBlueBlog Also the Rangers have 22 players on the current roster, so they wouldn't need to send Dorsett anywhere.
Plus, Vigneault is also suggesting a call-up from Hartford so are you saying he doesn't have an understanding of roster moves either?
Who pissed in your Cheerios??
@NYRBlueBlog agreed. and even if hank did ask for a day off i say way to be a responsible goaltender and admit when you need help. id rather see a well rested hank for the weekend games then have a tired one on thursday. we have a good backup. lets play in front of him and win one.
@NYRBlueBlog Thanks for visiting!
@rangermom And BTW, there will be a full blog post on this tomorrow.
@KevinTheNYRBlog @jasonshyerYes but with all due respect I think the guy knows his body better than you do. You try getting off a plane from Russia after playing in several games, getting run over in practice, and then suffering the frustration of winning Silver.
Aside from that the guy does have the reputation of being an insane competitor who takes his work very seriously. I'm just saying I think he's earned the benefit of a doubt.
@EMoney2413 correction they had 5 players in the olympics
@KevinTheNYRBlog Only way they make a call up is if Dorsett is not ready to go. Another route is if Staal can't play and is placed on IR for 7 days (backdated or not). If Staal is hurt, then they bring up Allen (7D) before they bring up Miller or Kristo. Also, AV's been adament in not jerking Miller back and forth and i'd be shocked to see them bring up Kristo this season.
@KevinTheNYRBlog 1) Not sure where you saw AV suggesting a call-up, but the Rangers do not have a set amount on their Roster right now. NHL rules dictate a max of 23 players on the roster, IR doesn't count. In the case Dorsett was not ready to go, they would put him on the IR(7 days) and back date to the end of the roster freeze. In the case he's healthy (as you've suggested) for them to call up Miller or Kristo. 2) the mere fact, you're suggesting dressing Miller or Kristo (roster moves aside) over Dorsett makes zero sense for the mere fact you don't healthy scratch (or waiver wire) an NHL player coming off injury in favor of an AHL player. 3) to clarify, i told you to 'sack up' cause your a joke for questioning Lundqvist's "want" to play. it's childish.
@NYRBlueBlog @KevinTheNYRBlog @mlsranger you also have to take into consideration that i believe Chicago had the most amount of players participating in the olympics, so their potential for olympic hangover is almost as high as the rangers. also keep in mind, hank just went on a 5 for 6 game win streak in sochi. regardless of if there is time inbetween the two, being in a game is a different experience than just practice and travel days.
@KevinTheNYRBlog @NYRBlueBlog @mlsranger no, i think AV wanted to get a read on his exhaustion level. One thing i've been worried about since the beginning of the season was a repeat of 2010 where Hank ran out of steam come playoff time. Talbot's play has been such a blessing for this team because it allows them to rest him and i always said at the beginning of the season Hank's struggles leading to Talbot's play was good for the team if Hank got right. I too want to see Hank out there, but i get the feeling that a big theme will be this team "re-clicking" and adjusting to the changes from the olympics. i.e. Zucc missing from our best line. With that said, they need to see what they have offensively and in net, they need to bring Hank along slowly and get him back into the rhythm he was in pre-Sochi. Rangers have 23 games left, and i think Talbot will play 6-8 of those. Yeah, it sucks to sit Hank vs Chicago but with 3 of the next 4 vs top 10 Goals for teams, you gotta make sure you bring Hank along perfectly with no hiccups.
@NYRBlueBlog @KevinTheNYRBlog@mlsranger If this was in AV's mindset from the get go why did he even need to speak with Hank about it today. Wouldn't it have been decided upon before he left for Sochi. It's not like they didn't know what the schedule was after the Olympics. Again, I do understand the rationale behind it, I just want to see our best goaltender in there against arguably one of the best teams in the NHL.
@KevinTheNYRBlog @mlsranger not as much the NHL ice, it's the Jetlag. I played for a month in Eastern Europe and when i came back i wasn't right for about 9 days. It's a smart choice to sit Hank cause there are ALOT of games down the stretch here and we need the best version of him. Also, i tend to think it was more AV making the decision, and if AV said "Hank i need you to go" i'm fairly certain he would. Keep in mind, for 2 weeks he was playing games at what is 3am-9am NY time and sleeping through the afternoon (NY Time) for a creature of habit, that takes a bit to adjust.
@mlsrangerI completely get that, I'm just saying it's not so insane to think he should be well adapted by Thursday night. He's played in NHL rinks for the last eight years, it shouldn't take him that long to figure it out.
@NYRBlueBlog @KevinTheNYRBlog@JoeNYR I'm pretty sure Hartford just recalled St. Croix from Greenville: http://www.hartfordwolfpack.com/news/detail/st-croix-rejoins-wolf-pack-from-greenville
@KevinTheNYRBlog @NYRBlueBlog @JoeNYR Well a few things factor in. 1st, the current 22 man roster would swap Dorsett for Zucc and call it even. However, if they call up Miller or Kristo they have to replace them at the AHL level and thus add contracts (whether it's 1 or 2) then the issue they run into is the 50 contract rule. With the deadline 8 days away, that's important for the mere fact that they may be trading/selling away Girardi and/or Callahan (regardless of the merits) they'd most likely bring back contracts in return which could hurt them or they'd be forced to cut someone they might not want to. All of that for calling up Kristo or Miller without giving Dorsett a shot with the 3rd line is unlikely in my opinion.
@JoeNYR @NYRBlueBlog appreciate it. People shouldn't get soo defensive when you question their opinions validity. Blogs promote free thought and speech, comments should promote the questioning of those thoughts valid or not valid. If they're valid, answer, if they're invalid, defend it or admit the invalidity and become better from it. Don't misdirect the answer's to prove your point and then make fun of them on twitter because of it. Every opinion i've ever posted on this site or any other site, i've defended gladly. The Rangers aren't going to healthy scratch Dorsett in favor of an AHL player, it's not going to happen. If Dorsett is still hurt, fine they'll do that. But with the roster limits, they're not going to manipulate the 50 contract limit (8 days from the deadline) and the 23 man roster limit (when 1 spot is kept available for emergency) to put Dorsett in the press box, it's not rational.
@KevinTheNYRBlog @NYRBlueBlog Okay, i see where you're coming from, HOWEVER, take a look at every team in the league, they all carry 22 not 23 and keep that last spot for emergency (i.e. road trip need a call up or your Goalie goes down) they're not going to max out the 23rd spot without giving Dorsett a shot on that line. If you want to discuss the dropoff in talent from Zucc to Dorsett, i'm in full agreeance, it's HUGE, but they're not healthy scratching Dorsett for Miller like was insinuated in your post.
@NYRBlueBlog @KevinTheNYRBlogAV says it right here: https://twitter.com/NYRangers/status/438369864097759232
