UPDATE: Darren Dreger confirms McKenzie's report.
Teams may continue to call TBay on St Louis, but, as of now, Lightning are telling teams St Louis is locked on the New York Rangers. #tsn— Darren Dreger (@DarrenDreger) February 27, 2014
While this is no earth shattering new information here, I think it's worth noting that this the first time that Tampa Bay has (indirectly) acknowledged St. Louis and New York as a potential marriage. More specifically, they're not telling teams that St. Louis can't or won't be traded, but rather that he can't or won't be traded, as of right now, to teams who aren't the "New York Rangers." It's a bit of semantics, but it should be identified as a small step by Tampa in terms of loosening their grip and preparing to move on from St. Louis.
Original Post: What a crazy few days this has been. Two weeks ago nobody would have even considered the idea that Martin St. Louis would retire anywhere besides Tampa Bay nor would the Lightning even listen to offers on their captain. Now, Bob McKenzie, previously skeptical that St. Louis would go anywhere, is reporting otherwise on TSN's 1050.
Mckenzie "my understanding is that St.Louis asked for a trade, still wants a trade and is willing to only go to the Rangers"— Hope_Smoke (@Hope_Smoke) February 26, 2014
However, McKenzie also believes Tampa Bay could opt to deal with the increasingly hostile situation in the summer.
McKenzie "Yzerman does not feel obliged by the deadline. This could drag into the summer"— Hope_Smoke (@Hope_Smoke) February 26, 2014
Keep reading for my take.
Things can change and maybe St. Louis and Yzerman make up. It wouldn't be the first time a trade request was reppealed. That being said, it's looking increasingly likely that Martin St. Louis is going to be moved eventually, and specifically to the Rangers. As it currently stands, we're likely looking at "when" St. Louis is moved; not "if."
As with everything, Steve Yzerman is left with weighing risk against reward. More specifically, the positives of hanging onto his team's leading scorer against the potential disaster that would be embarking on a Stanley Cup chase with a captain who does not want to be there and the ensuing media circus.
And that's the big issue here. People have placed skepticism on prospect of the Lightning making a move. "Why would Yzerman trade St. Louis?" The answer is because he might have no choice. Columbus wanted absolutely nothing to do with a Rick Nash trade, either. And similarly, Nash's no-trade clause allowed him to handpick potential destinations. Eventually, Columbus saw the writing on the wall and realized that there was no choice but to accept 50 cents on the dollar for Nash from the Rangers.
Yzerman faces a similar inevitability. If St. Louis truly wants a move to New York and isn't changing his mind, then Yzerman is going to be putting a lot of stress on the rest of the players and coaches by keeping him. Plus, who knows if St. Louis has even reached his limit here. He's disgruntled and restless now; how much worse can and will things get if March 5th passes and Yzerman blew off St. Louis' request to move?
We come back to the idea of measuring the risk/reward of keeping St. Louis against moving him. If Glen Sather calls up Yzerman dramatically lowballing him then running with St. Louis and hoping things work out is the clear choice. But if Sather offers up Callahan and maybe another lesser piece, which all reports indicate is likely, then it's a tremendous gamble to decline. We learned from the Brad Richards and Rick Nash acquistions that, once Glen Sather identifies his target, he gets him. He's been in the game forever and knows all the right buttons to push. He'll get the media against you until he's suffocating you like a cobra. And then he gets his man. Even if Yzerman doesn't want to pull the trigger, he's being backed into a corner and might just not have a choice.

rumor out of anaheim Girardi for Sammi V and Ottawa's !st rounder they got for ryan
sounds like a deal to me
Just read a bleacher report article that has McKensie saying Kessler a ranger for Stepan and something more
If this is true, and not a Sather-made story, I would hate to see Slats give up Cally for MSL.
We could package a second and maybe a prospect (Fast) for St. Louis, than move Cally for Chris Stewart and a second.
I really do believe Cally or Girardi will get moved, because we can only re-sign one of them, and Girardi is more valuable than cally, and is a mainstay on our blueline.
Cally has hit the injury bug, and seems to miss 10-15 games a year. In the 60-65 games he does play, he puts up 15-20 goals if we are lucky. While heart is an "intangible",using it to justify paying 6 million a year for the 40 points you get, makes it no longer that intangible.
Heres a thought. Tampa was one of the teams interested in signing Richards as a FA, how about richards for St louis
Maybe I'm looking at this wrong, but if I'm Sather, Callahan and Girardi are not involved in a deal for St Louis anymore. Whoever in Tampa let this slip is a moron of epic proportions. Yzerman officially has no leverage. Why would Sather offer bulding-block-style guys? I'd offer picks and/or a prospect. Yzerman has two options now, take whatever Sather offers, or deal with the fact that for the next year and a half your captain doesn't want to be part of the team.
I was at the game where they honored Marty for his 1,000 game played (against the Rangers), the guy couldn't be more loved by his teammates and fans, but I don't think a 38 year old is what Sather was looking for in return for the captain of his team.
Now that Kessler wants a trade how about a blockbuster reunion trade. G man and cally for Kessler and bieska. Now we are talking. get our first line center and a nasty dman and do not have to rush Dylan Mc. Also have some trade fodder for martin st louis after
CALLY VALUE ....is St Louis one of the best possible options ?
Stewart in St lou ? is it real i hear there are multiple teams interested ..
any one know these teams and what is the talent offered?
O M G ...is this the new soap opera ..."AS THE STOMACH TURNS"...
ST lOUIS MAKES DEMAND TO NYR ONLY???? never thought a caliber guy would snap and do/say a demand out loud .....
No wonder Boomer stooged the deal on the air......
When you put it that way ,it is a no-brainer ...even up for a legendary type.... top respect for work ethic(see Brad Richards ) -scoring machine who will actually match Cally's heart & soul factor.....DO IT BEFORE HE TAKES THE ANTIDOTE FOR THIS VIRUS HE HAS...( 1 AND ONLY 1 TEAM....)
iMAGINE THE MOTIVATION HE HAS AND WILL BRING TO TEAM...
@38 he must really be pissed to up & disturb all to move on...what a distraction to T B ay ...this could be done before they step on the ice tonite
contract wise is the best reason...no matter what money for cally is agreed,I philosophically oppose the years....NO WAY HE FINISHES THE NEXT 2 YEARS UNSCATHED OR THE LENGTH OF CONTRACT ...STYLE IS SO VOLATILE FOR A NOT TO BIG A GUY... love ya & best to you
I see it like this if we get MSL for Cally. Then trade G to somewhere for a nice haul. We can keep Richards and still have plenty of cap space. But I do hope we keep dan g.
Re;Girardi: We get something.Good.Set for future.Now...the Cup run this year. How does this play? Sami Vatenan played well for Finland and got silver.5 points.2 goals 3 assists. That is against good big skilled players. We'll be fine.
"Vatanen has game-breaking potential with his speed, imagination, and seeing-eye wrist shot. As a puck-carrying, puck-moving defenseman, his skills are on par with the best prospects out there. Vatanen remains rather undersized, which will present a major obstacle as he transitions onto North American ice. He also can be a bit of a risk in his own zone as his size and aggressive offensive style can lead him to getting out of position." So hey crazy idea... lets trade Girardi for DZ number 2... Just thinking worst case scenario... Emerson Etem better be coming back in this trade as well.
the team has already started to begin being built around AVs style of play and coaching....the torts era is over...the players will soon be changing too
lmao hook up with Richards ????Richards will be gone after this season anyway he wants to come here cause fam in conn and he knows he only got 3 yrs left and we will sign him to a 2 yr extension as soon as he gets to the garden he is 10 times the player cally is but to be honest I don't see cally going there I us giving up some kids and picks for him
MSL for Callahan? No brainer. In addition to the point production, MSL will bring crazy intangibles--leadership, experience, professionalism, Stanley Cup, etc. Cally is a nice player but I can't envision Cap'n Crunch hoisting the cup.
Well, certainly there are pros and cons to acquiring MSL but who wouldn't want the skill and savvy of St. Louis on a team that doesn't score much but trading Cally would be a mistake if we're going to go the MSL route and here's why. At 38 this is a win now move and trading away (one of) our best all around forwards and one of the few forwards who will actually throw a body check diminishes our chances to win now. It's pretty simple arithmetic. I hope Slats stands down on that one and takes his chances on losing him after the season. A lame duck has too little value on the trade market to give up and diminish your chances of winning when you are making a win now move. Also MSL means yet another small forward and the burden to trade for big tough forwards would then fall on Slats hands, and add to that who do you give up for a guy who will either be gone or become next to useless after next season. What portion of our future is worth parting with for a chance at winning the cup in one of the next 2 seasons? And Is St. Louis alone going to put us in cup contention. We can't trade Stephan, unless you want to see Boyle as your 2nd line center (OK 3rd line center) - It's looking like Hags will wind up being the odd man out and boy, you hate to give up a young speedster. I still think Slats is an idiot but he has been known to pull rabbits out of the hat so we will see. TB is not a rebuilding team so they will want available talent, not prospects. If only dumbo read the blog - we've been screaming for 2 seasons to get us some tough boys - and if he had a bigger tougher team this move would look a whole lot better. Our current roster will get battered, abused and be gone 1st round with or without MSL. Skill and offense only work when the D is strong and there're big guys to create space on the ice, and intimidators to keep the small guys from getting repeatedly pummeled. . Still exciting to see how this unfolds - gut tells me he will be here by the deadline.
Boomer at it again as it looks like Girardi is headed to Anaheim: https://twitter.com/7BOOMERESIASON/status/438861234826657792
@MannySanghera Stewart and a 2nd for Cally is a pipe dream for a rental and stevie Y would be crazy to take that for him he would be better off keeping him and trying to smooth things out but I do like your optimism
@Bring back Langdon #1 center is still the # 1 deficit that gets fixed sooner than later..next window is F A's in summer (StasTny
@Bring back Langdon with out the scrutiny of the details...i likey!
how bout Gman& JT miller for Ottawa 's Spezza -Neal ?
call y for msl ....done deal
@KreiderisTheChosenOne As far as being undersized I'd say look at Krug and Karlsson... Size is important, but there's no reason an undersized player cant be successful
one thing i didn't want to see go was girardi...shut down defensemen can win championships
@Betweentheworlds I agrEE TO DISAGREE HERE.( sorry about the cap lock lol) Not really a win now trade. its a trade of 2 desperate GM's trying to get something of value back. St Louis if he does resign for 2 yrs after he will get closer to 5 mill ayr than the 7 Cally wants. so right there you get everything cally was (sort of) for less and its for 3 yrs not 7 so cap room expands sooner. now step will never be a number 1 but he is a good center/player and is young with upside in his future so saying that trade him to Vancouver in a stepan and girardi to Vancouver for Kessler and bieska torts is happy and we are ecstatic And I think if thats feasible we become a much better team then before and we can start filling in the holes with our own young prospects
@KevinTheNYRBlog We better be getting more than Vatanen. For a top pairing D-man? Hopefully at least a pick with him too. We'd be giving up too much just to get an unproven prospect.
@KevinTheNYRBlog WTF is a Sami Vatanen??? Just what we need, another small guy to compliment St. Louis. I don't think this is a good move
@PacNYR44 @KreiderisTheChosenOne can you really call him a shut down anymore? I'm not trying to be a dick her but he is so slow and this season I have seen many guys go right around him on the rush. MvD saves his ass all the time. he is a great second pair dman now if staal was healthy in mind and body ...... but we do not have a guy to replace him now....wait Klien can replace him maybe after learn ing the system and getting 20 games or so under his belt. so A blockbuster reunion trade w/ Vancouver maybe the answer to all our problems a number 1 center a nasty dman to pair w/ Mcd all we need is a PP sniper....wait maybe we get marty S sounds like a pipe dream but you never know what sather can pull out of his ass
@NYrangers79 losing cally and girardi is not gutting the team. Cally easilly replaced as a hockey player girardi harder but he has slowed so much over last 2 years its smart to trade him now while value is high and get value back.Heart and soul is over rated. Cally is NO MESSIER thats heart and soul. St louis is heart and soul see what he did when best player on team went down he stepped it up and lead. when Nash got hurt where was Mr Heart and soul . he is a great role player and not all role players are great. great pker great forechecker. and blocks shots and hits!!!! every team needs a cally but there are lots of them out there and for what hes asking you can get a 2 for 1 deal. Hey would love him to stay but you cant tell me team will not recover losing a 20-25 goal scorer role player. and girardi is on a major decline and 3 years from now everyone will be screaming that a 5,5 million player is a 3rd pair and we cant trade him for a bag of pucks, his value now is the highest it will evr be going forward so take advantage of it.
What the hell you talking about. Move cally for St. Louis your upgrading the team. He's a legit scoring threat besides Nash. Sure it be nice to get a package of a 1st and "top prospect" but isn't that wasting Lundy In his prime? This team isn't built for the cup but the east is wide open. I rather go for a run and really re tool and go all out next year.
i mean...youll never please rangers fans really...so either way whatever is done will get negative and positive reactions...that being said, i don't see how getting rid of a player that is unwilling to be reasonable on what he is worth is considered gutting the team...the biggest mistake i believe is to lock in long term contracts on guys who shouldn't get them and handcuff the team for years to come...t just my opinion though everyone has a different one
@Bring back Langdon @BetweentheworldsI see your point but it still amounts to a win now move for us IMO. No matter what the circumstances behind this potential move MSL is still a 38 yr. old superstar and if Slats pulls the trigger if behooves him to hold onto Cally, and give us the best chance of winning it all right now. He should take a look at what Smith did in '94 before the deadline (God I hate giving him any credit) and get some bulk here, especially if he trades a stay at home Dman for a small attacking blue-liner and double that if Cally is part of the trade package.
@MannySanghera @Bring back Langdon Think of it this way if Cally was signed as MStL is would you make that trade for Cally. he is the heart and soul player w/ much more offensive talent for tampa. and just to show my love for Cally i would take stewarty in a pinch but Cally worth way more than him throw in a high draft pick or a top prospect and Id do it. Hitchcock not in love with Stewart
