Scott Cullen at TSN says because the Rangers look like a contender in the Eastern Conference they would have to get roster players in return for any trade involving Ryan Callahan and/or Dan Girardi since a playoff team can't justify dealing prominent players for no immediate help.
Glen Sather is reportedly still committed to trading the two home grown Rangers if they can't agree on an extension by the March 5th trade deadline.
...i'm not sure I agree with Cullen. The return package for either Cally or Girardi will depend on the direction Sather wants to take this team. If he's not confident in the team's chance this season then he'll attempt to get as many first round picks and top prospects as possible. However, if Sather thinks the Rangers have legit Stanley Cup aspirations, then yes, I can see him trying to replace the two for a playoff run if he can't get them re-signed.
...despite the crazy numbers flying around and the trade threats, I still can't envision Sather trading these two guys. I think they'll both ultimately re-sign. Having said that, don't underestimate Sather at the trade deadline.
Whereas I admire Slats' stand with these 2 players who does he think he will get in exchange for rentals that will help the team in a playoff run. The best he could hope for is to bulk up while losing 2 key guys which isn't terrible for a team lacking muscle but it wouldn't make up for what he's losing. Slats does not make idle threats so don't be surprised.
I don't totally disagree with Cullen but picks will not help the aging Lundqvist for a cup run with him. We mostly have to build around Lundqvists age to stay as a contender or it would have been pointless to sign him at 31 yrs to an 8.5M deal. High draft picks in return will not help us unless they can break the roster immediately. Trade for 20-30yr old player's yes, physical players yes, #1 center yes. We would definitely need a player of roster breaking quality in order to build around Lundqvist and make a run while he is still in prime condition. I don't know whats going to happen to Cally or Girardi, but if its a trade, thats what we need in return.
Ultimately they need to keep enough cap space for Stasny in the off season being that there is an abundance of centers in Colorado and will most likely not resign with them for the $ he wants. He also wants to come to a contending team which looks promising for us.
If we could retain Cally and Giradi (right price) plus the addition of Stasny and an energetic physical presence and subtraction of Richards(only because of his contract), I'd be happy looking forward to next years team.
Optimus Klein is playing good. In Hartford JT Miller playing good. Jesper Fast also now putting up regular points.
Sather could get roster players and/or picks. Not really an emergency as long as he gets a decent return of some sort.A roster player would be good but is not a must do.Cullen is not current on the Rangers apparently. That said I expect we'll get a solid roster player of some sort as well as picks.
US is down 4-0 late in 3rd of olympic competition for a medal; US team has sputtered & on a PK Cally blocks a slap shot. That character & passion is worth a lot of fucking money in my book. Slather is going to get shit in return if he lets 24 walk; and possibly affect ranger home stretch.
Unfortunately the Rangers aren't going to get much for Cally with his redonkulous contract demands. His agent and himself have to stop doing that meth from breaking bad. They have alot better chance of of trading Girardi for a good valued player. Even though i hope they resign him instead. Cally isn't going to get much besides a draft pick, a 3rd line player, or a young potential player that has a good chance to make it into the nhl.
Right now, most everyone on the Ranger's roster is contributing to the success of the team and a boatload of them are UFAs next year. Sure not everyone is the caliber of Cally and Girardi, but all of these guys have contributed. You can't simply resign these guys to ludicrous contracts. We know how that will go. It's the way it always goes. One or both will be traded. Sather will have no choice.
its one way for both get signed or traded....I think if traded they get talent not picks ,this team is one top center away .... we have depth in all area on the farm...who knows is J T miller a possible #1 center or part of a trade to get a #1
i've written so much on this ,cant wait till smoke clears and the run starts
the new MARCH MADNESS ... the post olympic -nhl sprint to the finish ...who's gonna do what and finish where ? ...cant wait especially watchin a boring bronze medal game ...where's Stepan ? Mac -Cally ? be careful...
@TheNYRBlog NEED FRESH BLOOD
@TheNYRBlog In your honest opinion Kevin, do you see either of them leaving?
Is this a serious question haha..if we're contenders keep them and don't mess with chemistry..if they wanna go after the season let them..we have a lot of young talent. Speaking of young talent. I can't wait to see duclair, might not be for a few years but I think this kid can be special
@TheNYRBlog Sather needs to sign Girardi and get SOMETHING for Cally
No they don't, this is one of the Rangers problems. What's wrong with planning for the future while being a contender? Boston did it and it's working pretty good for them. We have AHL guys who are ready for the NHL.
One of them will be leaving and IMO it is going to be CALLY he will get traded to buffalo for something I say this because he will go the they will pay him what he wants and he will be the captain close to his hometown of Rochester. If we trade Danny G will we get someone in return that chews up defensive ice time like he does I highly doubt it.
@TheNYRBlog giradi is not going anywhere this season.
Love capt. Cally and G, but I hope slats doesn't go over board trying to prove a point either way by overpaying, or by trading - let's hope Dustin Brown was able to talk some sense into Cally and he modifies his demands to a more reasonable level!
@BroskieNation @TheNYRBlog yah especially with that nice play of him not covering the point that scored the goal for Canada to beat Usa. Was very smart of him moving to the off side to leave the right point wide open for a shot right in the slot. Cally has played ok in the Olympics as a role player, but he is not even close to as talented as 95% of the players on the team. Ill be happy just to trade him and end all this talk. Signing him to anywhere near what him and his breaking bad meth using Agent is asking will only create more drama with future players asking for more money then they are worth.
@BoogieDownDoug I don't, but I never put anything past Sather.
