Six of the seven Rangers who traveled to Sochi to represent their countries at the Winter Olympics remain alive for a gold medal as Teams USA, Canada and Sweden all advanced to the semifinals with victories yesterday. Finland was the fourth team to qualify with a win over host country Russia.
Here's your bracket...
Ryan Callahan was a guest on the Michael Kay radio show yesterday and discussed the American's victory over the Czech Republic...
Tomorrow at noon, the United States will take on Canada in a rematch of the 2010 gold medal game, while Sweden will be matched up against Finland in the other semifinal at 7a.m.
...Ryan Callahan has shown a ton of chemistry with linemate David Backes, who dominated the Czech Republic with his physical play yesterday. Those two are going to look sweet together for the Blues playoff run this spring.
...the United States has been so good during the Olympics, Ryan McDonagh had to bank one into his own goal off his defensive partner Ryan Suter just to make things close yesterday.
...and for those of you crying into your beer this morning about the Zuccarello hand injury, just be thankful you're not an Islanders fan, who lost
the only reason to watch any of their games John Tavares to a knee injury against Latvia and will be out for the remainder of the Olympics and possibly the NHL season.
...while Nash played just 10 minutes against Latvia, I thought it was his best game of the tournament. Which isn't saying much.
...btw, how is it that only the Sabres, Islanders and Lightning (he turned down their offer) have been willing to give Ted Nolan a chance? The guy can flat out coach.
...it's not for the gold medal, but it doesn't get better than USA/Canada in a do or die game with a trip to play for gold on the line.
...while Sweden has breezed through the Olympics up until this point, I wouldn't be shocked if they were cut down by Finland. Lundqvist and his Swedish crew have yet to play an elite opponent, so they may be caught off guard by the step up in competition.
...potential Rangers fans' nightmare scenario: Olli Jokinen scores the gold medal winning goal for Finland in a shootout.
You shut your filthy mouth, Kevin. That's not even funny. Especially not after today's women's match.
@TheNYRBlog That's so F'd up
I definitely wonder how this opportunity to play with some other players from around the league plays into Callys decision to stay or leave. St Louis could definitely be attractive to him.
I was trying to figure out if we could trade Step and some pieces for Backes. With him at center, Maybe Callahan COULD become a first line player...
A Tavares-type injury to Lundqvist or McDonagh is a nightmare scenario. Losing in the gold medal game to a guy who was here for 10 minutes barely even counts as a bad day.
@TheNYRBlog shut up shut up shut up shut upppppppp.. Stopp bad memories.
@TheNYRBlog that's way to much to handle or process right now lol
@cb1 I've heard that also, but who cares if you're another NHL owner. If the guy can help your team win, let him bang the wives of all your players. lol
