On the heels of the Columbus Blue Jackets interest in obtaining Ryan Callahan, Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch reports that Rangers' pro scout Gilles Leger was at Nationwide Arena to scout the Blue Jackets/Panthers game last night.
Portzline adds that another Rangers pro scout, Rick Kehoe, was there on Thursday, but is often seen at the arena.
...if Columbus truly is interested in Callahan, then it makes sense that Rangers scouts are attending their games.
...i won't even try to humor you by stating the Rangers could be interested in bringing back any of the plethora of former players currently part of the Blue Jackets organization. I also have to assume Johansen (4th overall in 2010), Murray (2nd overall in 2012) and Horton are untouchable.
...just looking at the remainder of Columbus' roster I'm not exactly excited about what I'm seeing and their list of prospects is neither long nor distinguished. Maybe a package of 20-year old center Boone Jenner or Cam Atkinson along with first and second round picks would work? Or if Sather thinks he might have problems re-signing Girardi or Stralman, defenseman Jack Johnson along with picks could be an option.
...or who knows, maybe the Rangers were scouting someone on the Panthers.
Meanwhile, Katie Strang at ESPN.com notes that scouts from Detroit, Montreal, San Jose and Tampa Bay were all in attendance for Friday night's Rangers/Islanders game.
...i wouldn't necessarily say they were all on hand to watch Callahan, because the last time I checked, the Islanders were pretty much out of the playoff hunt and have a valuable UFA in Vanek.
Finally, a team most thought would be a major contender for Callahan's services, the Buffalo Sabres, are, as of right now, not shopping for him, according to John Vogl at the Buffalo News.
...this is somewhat surprising since Callahan is a Rochester boy, but at the same time, the Sabres look to be in rebuild mode, so I'm not sure how giving up draft picks and prospects while handing out a long term, lucrative contract helps them do that.
My cousin hates Columbus so much that he once said in 2010 "You could take all the players in NY, send them to Columbus, and they'd still suck because they are Columbus." Little did he know that would actually happen! Whether or not they suck is an open question (looking more like they thrived in a shortened season but aren't good for the long haul ... then again they were without their goaltender for a bit). Still funny though.
eh, Jack Johnson is under contract for another 4-5 years at $4.5, if we're looking to sign Girardi for $5.5, i stay with Girardi as it's not that big of a difference and Girardi is much better defensively than Johnson and Johnsons stats (not offensive ability) are not better than Girardi's. Although Can Atkinson has some upside, he is not a sure thing or a proven commodity just yet and at 5'7, 189 lbs, it's a short term solution to a long term gap, i'd prefer to see a center in return for Callahan especially with Richards most likely gone after this season, JT Miller unproven, a weak Center free agent class, and Derek Brassard is not a sure thing for next season as he's an RFA and you never know, even with Brassard, you can't expect John Moore to center your 2nd/3rd line. As for Buffalo, i'm sure they can send back some solid draft picks and prospects but as far as who's attractive on their roster, i wouldn't look for much else other than Cody Hodgson who also is an unproven commodity and hasn't played a full season yet either. I would consider Drew Stafford who's a bigger sized Ryan Callahan but isn't much a greater fit for AV's system than Callahan (for those systematic detractors), however Stafford is only under contract for another season at $4million. I really don't see a market out there that offers a substantial return for the Rangers that solidifies this lineup as well as Callahan does, while offering the cap flexibility and re stocking the farm/prospect pool as well. I think at the end of the day, Sather will come back to the table and add a year to his offer to Callahan which should get it done in my opinion.
Remember what we learned from the Drury deal....and don't do it again. We haven't been the best at spending on big contracts...more than just a few terrifyingly bad examples. See what he'll fetch us... the only time to get real quality in terms of leverage is now...every other GM knows we're over this barrel...we would get more for him now than in a month...plus he's healthy at the moment.
I think everyone agrees while it would suck to lose Callahan... It would have been much worse to see hank in this type of situation. Glad they avoided that in retrospect.
As of Monday morning, the chance of Callahan leaving the New York Rangers is over 75%.... just a gut feel, given the murmurs and buzz in the press and in the blogs.... bye bye Cally, you were great because your best days WERE in New York!!!
I don't blame Cally for going after all that he can get. This is his one major chance at a big payday. I'm just sick of athletes (including Cally) who say, "I want to stay here, my heart is here", when they really mean, "I want to stay if I get the money/terms I want". Cally is doing it, Messier did it when bolted to VAN, etc, etc. Just want to hear an athlete say, "I would love to stay here, so hopefully they give me a deal I'm happy with"
cb1's post below makes the most sense. Fact is, Callahan is NOT worth as much as a guy like Lucic. I'd trade Callahan for Lucic in a heart beat. I'm sure the Bruins would laugh and say throw in a first rounder as well. Callahan is being too demanding. He is good, gutsy and sacrifices his body - all which are admirable qualities. But they still don't add up the $6.0 million. His agent is being unrealistic [thinks he's doing his job]. But let's see if there are any takers. If there is someone out there who will give him what he wants like Montreal did with Brandon Prust than we have to trade him, provided that what we have coming back does not look like Wade Redden!
I don't get how there wasn't this much animosity with the Lunqvist contract. Talk about a ridiculous contract, 7yr./ $59.5 million...I sure hope there are more buyouts down the road because I promise you we're going to be wishing for one before this contract is into its 5th yr. No one is giving out high salary/ long term contracts to goalies anymore. We will have the honor of the last of these.
We have 10 players under contract for next year and as BrendyJohnson pointed out, they will have $29M to sign a bunch of players. If Sather can get a Chris Stewart or a Cam Atkinson plus a pick, you have to consider making that deal. Before a compliance buyout on Richards, they'd have to feel good about getting Paul Stastny this summer...but let's face it, it's a negotiation and Callahan's agent doesn't give a rats behind about those numbers crippling our cap for many years to come....we can do better than Cally or Richards...As good as the roll they are on, "this team" won't win a Cup...can't beat Pittsburgh, or a Chicago or Boston and they probably can't beat Tampa when Stamkos comes back...so the need is to manage the cap and make moves that create flexibility and sign key pieces that can be part of a Cup worthy team...and that means my priority is Kreider, Zucc, and yes, Stralman and Pouliot ... Gauge the market on Girardi and Cally...but if I were a betting man, I'd say only one of them comes back...and the Girardi camp aren't going to talk their way out of New York....Callahan better talk to the agent because playing hardball is going to get your client a ticket out of town.
everyone seems to have no problem pointing fingers at Cally saying he's being greedy, but how about we look at some of these ridiculous contracts that were given out this past summer by these idiot GMs...Clarkson gets 7 years ~5 mil and he couldnt sniff Cally's jock strap...he had 1 good season and he got locked up long term...and he's older....Ryane Clowe, while I think hes a great player, gets 5 years ~5 mil, after 3 concussions in one year, has similar points to Cally, except penalty min which he has almost 3x as much and he is 2 or 3 years older....then gets injured again right in the beginning of the season....even Dustin Brown gets 8 years -6 mil and he only has 150 more career points in over 250 more career games....oh yea hes a year older than Cally too...so how can you blame the guy for seeking a comparable deal? He's younger than all these guys, his injuries are nowhere as severe as someone like Clowe's (concussions much different than a broken bone) plus when Cally gets injured he ALWAYS comes back sooner....plus, considering all the bitching Ranger fans did this season about how this team is soft and no one throws a hit and blah blah blah, now you wanna get rid of the ONE guy who never stops and always throws his body around, quite effectively i might add? 6 years ~6 mil is TOTALLY fair for Cally and he deserves it. If theres anyone to blame its these GMs who hand out monster contracts to players who either dont deserve it (Clarkson), have WAY worse injury history than Cally (Clowe) or is a very similar player (Brown), but nobody here seems to think his contract is outrageous (perhaps cause we're not kings fans we dont really care...but be objective)
I don't have the time or energy to respond to everyone getting on Cally for shooting for the big bucks or not offering a "hometown discount", though I'd like to (re-posted from yesterday's thread)
People don't realize, or stop to think. Generally you get one chance for your mega contract in hockey and one chance only. That happens at your first eligibility as a UFA. Cally has already proven his loyalty to the team. He does not need to do that now. He has earned the right to a big contract through his heart, and the blood and sweat he has given this team for 7 years. One shot at the big money - it's not about loyalty, it's about his future, his children and their future and frankly if he was more loyal to his hockey team, (hockey being a game and a children's game at that) than he is to his family and future I'd say he needs his head examined. Shooting for 7M a year and securing 7 yrs. makes him quite sane in my estimation, even though he won't get that much..The other thing about the so called "home town discount" is that the players are a fraternity with unwritten rules. You sign for less than your worth at the UFA level you have broken that trust with your fellow players and have effected their ability to negotiate their contracts. All the detracting comments are knee jerk reactions not coming from the savvy fans IMO. No we didn't win a cup but in his 7 years the team went from laughing stock to respectability and he played a major roll in the transformation. Whether they keep him or he signs elsewhere a little appreciation would be nice please. And don't berate this man for trying to make some big bucks. He's earned it.
Brown's probably the best comparison to Cally. But ask some Kings fans how they feel about that contract. And yet Cally is asking for even more!
OK, i've just been going over the numbers and Cally is out of his fucking mind asking for 7 years at $6M+. He's not in the same class as Pavelski, Sharp, Couture, Lucic or other guys who are at the $6M range. Even without a hometown discount he should be no more than $5M per to be even with other players of his caliber.
Sorry Cally, but don't let the door hit your ass on the way out.
No word on if there is any talk with the kings? They need some help in their slump to shake things up and have some good assets we might want to take a look at.
Can we please stop trading with Columbus?? We're one trade away from ACTUALLY being the New York Blue Jackets!
Unfortunately in sports no team can ever retain All their players .. And unless they win the cup every year, I wouldnt wamt them to. It's time for change .. Cally is a hero of mine but we get a nice return and save some $$
The rangers have about 29m in cap space for next season: this can be done if they give:
Kreider 2.5 (bridge)
J. Moore 2.5
Brassard 3.5 (extension)
That leaves 3.5 to resign D. Moore, Pouliot, and Boyle plus the option of buying out Richards to gain another 6.67mil. This can be done!
No way he is going to Columbus unless they give us a monster package Kevin. They are our potential first round opponent, even Sather isn't that stupid.
A team would only offer anything of value for UFA Cally if they had a burning interest to sign him long term and wanted the advantage of negotiating a contract before other teams can July 1. Otherwise why would you trade your assets for a rental? Slats and Cally may be closer than we think.
Callahan is reportedly searching for SEVEN-YEARS and $6.85 million**, the same as Patrice Bergeron. St. Louis, Detroi and LA all need help at forward. (Ottawa Sun) Are you kidding me.... GOOD BYE. is he delusional?
No way...what's the justification that he does the little things (3) 20 goal seasons and 0.56 pts per game doesn't make you a $6M man...that Toronto gave Clarkson funny money doesn't make us suckers.
6mil for 6 years is still to much 6 mil for 5 is good the Rangers must always think of the team before anyone player no matter how valuable he is. And no offense he is not worth 6 mill for any amount of years he should get a raise to 5-5.5 and be exstatic because if he wasnt a hockey player he would be a security guard at RIT making 20 dollars an hour. please put life in perspective. I do not fault him for asking for crazy numbers all of us would. but at some point when some one offers you6MILLION DOLLARS to play a game you love and profess love for the team offering it you have to think . and in 5 years who says he cant get another contract for at leasas much if I hear right from most of cally supporters he should be able to maybe more.
Im sure he really means he loves playing here but like you said this is his LAST chance for a major payday and he must lookout for his family. Pro athletes dont get many chances so he must make the most of it for himself. I dont blame him one bit for getting the most he can. Everyone has left one job for a better paying one, why shouldnt pro athletes??
Nice observation shoot.... I agree with you. We fans are not stupid and these professional athletes should treat us with dignity and respect. Just tell us the truth and we will cheer for you even more. BS us like we are schmucks and you can get lost.
Problem with Hank is that he is one of the top 5 goalies in the world so no matter what there is a team that would have given him that contract. Cally although I love him on my team is not a bonafide top 6 foward who has had alot of injuries in the past reducing his value.
Ha...you sure didn't read my posts (or article here) that railed against the Hank extension. Look, fans are fans for a reason. Every one who blasted me for saying that Hank or Cally should not be extended will be the first blasting the Rangers during the final third of those contracts when the players are a mere shell of what they were. LOL...the great thing though is that NOT ONE will admit he was behind the signings come that time. It will be like the reverse of Woodstock wherein only 300,000 people attended but somehow 25 million SAID they were there!
Your absolutely right, you cant blame him.but we passed on clowes demands and passed on clarksons asking price and will pass on callys. sather has done so dumb moves in the past but seems to have learned from his and other gm's mistakes. so if there is a gm out there willing to succumb to callys dwmands, then good for cally we all loved watching him play. but i loved watching alot of my favorite players play that were traded or not resigned and I got over it. This team is not built to go deep. we need to tweek it. Hate that its cally but he may still help us by getting back key pieces. so I say to cally and his family good luck wish you the best but I am a RANGER fan and that means more to me than you. I understand your stance and am not mad as I would probably do the same!
Way too verbose! What are you saying? Please summarize in ten lines or less please?
word is he is asking for 7 years at 6.85, so closer to 7. I think he is delusional.
@BrendyJohnson That's too much for J. Moore IMO. Also I'm not keen on resigning Brassard. Sorry, he's not worth the $3.7M offer sheet.
We should dump Richards and use the money to throw at Stastny.
And then they have the same exact above-average-yet-not-great team as this year. Status quo is not the goal here.
Thats why St Louis makes sense, plus he fits their style. they just may be playing hard to get to give less
That may be true but again consider the source. Ottawa Sun has some ridiculous rumors.
@JoeyKocur @shoot_the_goalie "I'm gonna talk to my agent, and we'll see. You know, I had such a great time here in New York. From day one they treated me really well and have given me an opportunity to play a lot of hockey. It's been a lot of fun. I have one more year on the contract. I'm just focused on - well, right now, I'm trying to get over this year - but we'll see. I'll talk to my agent and take it from there." - Hank
For all the flak Hank got at the end of last season, at least he was being straightforward and honest with the media, fans, NYR, etc.
I see Henry's signing like this; secure your goalie, first order of business this is your most important piece. He comes a little pricey but fair enough. Doable. done! Length of contract is high but I believe the last couple years he gets paid significantly less (correct me if I'm wrong) and a "no trade clause" is really an "if you want to trade me I'm going to decide where I'm going clause", so I don't think length of contract is as big an issue as people think. It's fine. He's got several good years ahead of him. We just need to keep him away from the bars lol...
With Cally I'm somewhat ambivalent. I love his game and what he brings here and of course I would like him to stay but there's no real attachment and I wouldn't support over paying him. I think he's earned the right to seek a big contract. What he brings as a support player is huge; he has the gift to lift and inspire the entire team, he plays big, hits anything that moves, excellent on D and PK and can still net 25l. Knows how to set a screen on the PP. heart and soul (what you can't teach). I can't see him being worth more than 6M but these guys only get one chance. It's business
If it takes dealing Cally and G then so be it - the team needs to take the next step and overpaying isn't going to get us there! Of course buying Ritchie is a no brainer!!!
That's not a raise thats an Enron. Golden parachute......undeserving of a 3 million dollar raise..I don't give a shit what he does it s not enough to even have the balls to ask for that and then the yrs. ....Fuck him. He is an ungrateful SOB
He acts like the rangers haven't been good to him. When the have..... He doesnt produce enough points... enough said.....He is not and I repeat HE IS Not THE FRANCHISE PLAYER. ... He is confused
@mando24179 It's called NEGOTIATION. The Rangers throw out a low ball offer, Cally's agent throws back a high one, back and forth, and hopefully they compromise on a reasonable deal.
