While the Olympic break officially ended for the Rangers last night, the hot stove continues to burn as Nick Kypreos at Sportsnet reports that the Rangers are one of three teams (Red Wings & Penguins are the others) interested in Ryan Kesler. Bruce Garrioch at the Ottawa Sun says to add Columbus to the mix.
Kypreos says Kesler, who has a full no trade clause, will likely be moved by next Wednesday. The Canucks are reportedly looking for a player, prospect and pick in return for their center.
Kesler has two years remaining on his contract that pays him $5 million per yesr and may be dealing with a broken hand suffered during the Olympics.
...word on the street is that the "player" Vancouver would be looking for in return for Kesler, who, when healthy, is an absolute stud, is a young center. Have to wonder if moving Stepan, who has obviously struggled in AV's offensive system, is something Sather would be willing to do to bring in the scoring center. Doubtful since the Rangers just re-signed Stepan, but, when you have the opportunity to obtain a real first line center things change. The Canucks asking for Miller along with Stepan would be a non-starter for me..
...i'd assume Nash would have no problem with the Rangers bringing in a pivot of Kesler's caliber to play on his line.
Meanwhile, Dan Girardi tells Steve Zipay at Newsday that he hopes a new long-term pact can be reached with the Rangers...
"We'll see what happens. We'll be working here in the next few days hopefully and we'll try to bang something out here and in the meantime, I'll go about my job . . . Once you get here -- morning skate or in the game -- it's the last thing on my mind."
...after watching the defensive clinic the Rangers put on last night, I'm pretty sure we're all hoping Girardi is extended very soon.
Finally, a couple of scouts were in attendance to watch Rangers/Blackhawks last night...

Moore, Brassard, and a second round pick. The guy is 29, you sell them on the idea of young talent that Torts will vouch for and insist on getting. And second rounds are good to have extra picks. VAN will know that and try and get a first. I might even give it to them.
Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported a proposed deal between the Pens and Canucks that he credited to multiple sources.
“A proposed deal would send Kesler to the Penguins in exchange forBrandon Sutter, two 2014 draft picks — likely a first- and third-round — and the Canucks' choice of defensemen Simon Despres orBrian Dumoulin,” Rossi wrote on Saturday.
Rossi continued to say that it is possible the deal could involve another player going in either direction, but that Penguins' GM Ray Shero was only looking to acquire Kesler.
Slates would need to put a package together of something like Stepan, Fasth a 2014 1st & 3rd to get Kessler.
I'd love to add Boyle, J. Moore or Connor Allen & a 2015 2nd & get Kevin Bieska back as well.(They are looking to move him)
just saw hockey news @5 ...yeah G man congrats ,now we can focus on offense ... kesler- msl next Oh we are close to setting the east on its ear as the team to beat...could cause a lot of deals to happen
Boyle is the weak link on that 4th line...The more I watch Carciello the more I like him,He fit in right away he's a smart player, works hard and AV has been rolling the line pretty steady.. Again,Slats taking a chance on D.Moore makes him look like good.
And you cant compare those 2 (step and kesler), the only way that trade happens is if cally and St louis happens....you get your point scorer and a bigger cally that can find the back of the net...
Reading Chicago is making Bickell available. Not sure what his contract is but would love him as a 4th line wing playing with Carcillo and Boyle/Moore.
Girardi ... 6 yrs $33 million. 5.5/year. I can live with that. I hope this contract comes with a bigger set of balls though.
Any chance the rangers move stralman? I think Klein could easily fill his role and they could get a nice piece for a top 4 defenseman to a team looking to fill a need. Don't think they would sign him anyway.
so so many comments ..O K if anyone out there is saying or thinking status quo is an option ...its past your bed time ...see ya for the optimistic training camp in next sept.....
that 3way for M SL ..ok by me gets a highly motivated guy with 1.5 yr sleft
Kesler ..looked up #'s injury prone ? has played alot of 80 gm seasons
he is a # 1 horse(Kesler) to go with our prize bramma bull (NASH) and they play with a moose/gazelle (Kreider ) can think of a big strong fast animal...
what is a prospect other than MIller J Fast -O linberg ?
you cant ask for 2 better upgrade for offense than Kesler & MSL
HOUDA THUNK IT .........WE NEED OFFENSE & WE LOSE CALLY /STEPAN TO GET ...KESLER -MSL.. WOW WOOW ...PINCH ME !!!!!!
Gman aint goin nowhere !!!to d coming of age
wow go to lunch and 200+ comments ...simple right
Kesler for Stepan -Boyle (balance contract)+ draft pick
Kesler has two more points than Stepan this season, and is a -10. And Step is having an 'off season'. Step is 23 and improving, Kesler is 29 and only scored 50 points in his last full season. Straight up it wouldn't be a good trade. Throw in propects and a pick? yikes
The people here who say that the Rangers are doing well, don't mess with it remind of the joke of the guy who jumped off the Empire State Building and while he was passing the 20th floor was asked how it was going, to which he replied "So far, so good." The playoffs are the ground. Don't be deceived by this team. They are okay, but they are NOT a good bet for a good run in the playoffs. Can anything happen? Sure. But they have a SOFT underbelly and not NEARLY enough talent to overcome it. And these "keep the core" people are driving me as crazy as MDZ did. Sure....sign the aging core to long term deals....we wouldn't want to mess with this outstanding run of mediocrity. Heaven forbid. LOL
Kesler is great, but only if the price is right. He's on the back 9 of his career and has had serious injury problems in the past. I'd do Brassard, a prospect and a pick; not Stepan or Miller.
Total aside, but I'm loving this Klein trade. Trading DelZotto has put back like 5 years onto my life expectancy.
Way I see it Rangers are winning, playing very well. There is no need to trade anyone.Just need to get a return on over term/priced UFA contract players- thus the Callahan and Girardi situation. Stepan may be playing 2nd line level but he is pretty smart with the puck and is young. He is helping the club.JT Miller hasn't even played regularly and is 20 years old.Trading them for a 30 year old who plays a physical game? And I would say that 30 year old player is only good and not elite? No.
It would be different if there was a need, if we were losing, but that's not the reality
@IhaveawaiteratMSG John or Dominic? John I assume you mean. I like the kid, but hasn't seem to flourish under AV as expected. Maybe DZ wasn't holding him back after all. In the playoffs, I may prefer Conor Allen as a solid stay-at-home. Might as well get his feet wet now.
And I like Brassard, but we have 4x 2nd/3rd line centers between him, Step, Miller and Richards. If we buyout Richards and move Brass or Step for real #1 center, then I like out team with Kesler, Step/Brass, Miller down the middle. Thats a lot better than Step, Brass, Richards.
@Scott from SEC 224 dreams can come true...cally & prospect for st lou and 23 skidoo were off to the races......
@Billfrom Brookhaven reason i put him in kesler trade............
put 4th line moore w/carcillo & dorsett and voilah more grit & attitude
If Stralman goes for like a 3-4yr deal worth no more than 2.5m per, I would resign him. Stralman has been very steady and has flashes of offensive talent. I fear he's going to want Klein money though, around 3m per.
if you get them both , msl & kes, you completely change the conference.
remember when we traded Gardener I was pissed off! but i got over real quick
@Say my Name I agree with most of what you're saying, but the soft underbelly really only applies to the forward group. The three D pairings are very solid and so is the goal tending. So I understand why folks want to hang on to Girardi and are willing to pay a bit more for a top pairing Dman. It's the forward group that will be exposed come playoff time, which is why I won't be so devastated if my second favorite NY athlete gets traded.
Loved the Klein deal from the get go. Just solid. I think almost everyone here was in favor of it. Most would've traded MDZ for a stale pretzel.
Yeah that was a very smart deal, he'll be solid for the next few years at what he does.
I'm down with that. Well, as long as the pick is 3rd round or later.
@KreiderisTheChosenOne *banging on table* GET IT DONE
@fs2020 in 2 yrs step will have an over price FA contract
@fs2020 our great squad during this run got run over by pittsburghs b squad and we beat the less physical squads. but during the playoffs we are not built sturdy enough for the long run.Kessler a nasty, faceoff winning scoring 1st line center not a bad pick up st louis is small but an established scorer playmaker that has made up for his lack of size with other intangibles so I dont think we are breaking up a winner but making it better. girardi a a shell of his former self and McD bails his ass out every game the only name on our d thats wasnt brought up positivly by the chicago announcers was G's Staal by far was spoken about the most then McD and stralman then Klein and moore this needs to be looked at as a strengthening of our team not a break up. and lets not forget the two FA's can both except the generous offers that they have on the table
@mando24179 Probably the same people that wanted to make Talbot the starting goalie and the same people that want to trade cally girardi stepan and miller
Guess u didn't watch last night's game. As talbot got wacked to the mid section a couple of times in front of Girardi and he didn't do shit......
Or how about when talbot was run over. ... again alternate Capt tissue paper (Girardi) standing there and did nothing
U can't be that bind not to have seen that
