The New York Rangers (32-24-3) defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins (40-15-3) by the score of 4-3 in a shootout, tonight. For a box score, go to Yahoo! Sports.
...now that's how you go into the Olympic break! Absolutely dominating effort 5-on-5 as the Rangers were the complete antithesis of what they were last night. They dictated the play, forechecked hard and if it wasn't for a couple of ill-advised penalties probably would have won that game in regulation.
...screw Callahan's extension, when are we going to start talking about re-signing Pouliot to a multi-year deal? So impressed with his willingness to go to the net and pay the price to score.
...i'm not sure what Girardi's current contract demand is right now, but after tonight, I'd give him whatever he wants.
...speaking of Girardi, who knew he was going to be the answer to the Rangers power play struggles?
...it might be time to start giving Sather credit for deciding against amnestying Richards.
...hearing Yzerman canceled Nash's flight to Sochi after the game.
...there's a good chance David Poile did the same to Stepan.
...it's a shame Staal's concussion and eye issues scared Team Canada away, because he'd be a huge asset for them in the Olympics.
...have to assume Crosby and Malkin are not looking forward to going up against McDonagh again in Sochi.
...anyone who doesn't have Sweden as a gold medal favorite hasn't been watching Lundqvist the last month and a half.
...only thing sweeter than Zuccarello's shootout move was his slash on Kunitz after the Penguins forward took an extra poke at Lundqvist.
...at least someone's sticking up for teammates as it seems like AV has completely neutered Carcillo since that Flyers game.
...tonight's victory once again proved when given time and space to skate, the Rangers can hang with anyone in the NHL. The final litmus test for me comes on March 2nd when the Bruins come to town. If the Rangers are able to create offense using their speed game against that tough, physical line-up then I think it's safe for everyone to officially get on the "Stanley Cup Threat" bandwagon.
...i was really looking forward to sitting back, relaxing and enjoying the Olympics, but instead I'm going to be completely freaked out that all the momentum and chemistry the Rangers have accumulated the last eight weeks will dissipate into the Sochi air.
...next game is February 27th when the Blackhawks come to town.
Only caught the last few minutes of the game live, just got around to watching some highlights. We're playing a lot better, but am I the only one concerned with the number of goals we allow in the final five minutes of the game this season? Early in the season we really struggled protecting leads. For most of January we got better, locking down defensively when we needed to. But it seems recently (and the last two games, obviously), we've reverted back to not being able to "protect the house". Not forcing OT against the Oilers was 1, and had we lost in a OT/SO to the Pens that could have been 2 huge points we left on the table by allowing opponents to score late.
Just some food for thought...
" it might be time to start giving Sather credit for deciding against amnestying Richards."......slow........ piss poor in the defensive zone......weak in physical games....can't create with little ice.....Oh Yeah PP and shootouts totally worth 6.6M a year!
Awesome game. I was just hoping Kreider was going to make Malkin his bitch at some point. I know...unlikely but one can dream
Don't criticize Carcillo - if not for his "neutered" behavior, the Rnagers would not have gotten a PP against the Penguins. Dan has been a decent player for the Rangers.
speaking of hank, looked at some stats.... there are currently only 2 goalies in the entire NHL who have played more games and have a higher save percentage. after such a rough start and all the contract bs , wow. man came storming back and is earning every penny. part of his worth is his consistency and durability, and he's proving that now as other goalies drop like flies and/or have great 20 game stretches at most. glad to have you hank, great contract.
i think most of you guys will agree with me....i am very happy with this team and hiow they are all playing...we aren't seeing the rely on one man type of game we are used to and we get to see an exciting resilient team almost every game as of late....no complaints here loving this team right now!!
@TheNYRBlog Any chance the blog will have post game thoughts for USA hockey Olympic Games? Could deter u from worrying about 2006 NYR repeat
I remember when virtually everyone, including you were criticizing and making fun of Pouliot. You even had a sarcastic nickname for him..... now you worship him like a hockey God! Well, well....players have up games and down games, but I guess you are happy we did not jettison him when he was playing poorly, otherwise you'd be regretting it today! ;-)
Played a great game..now lets get Girardi and CALLY signed and come out after Olympic break a blazing!!
@TheNYRBlog RICHARDS GETS ALL THE CREDIT , YUCK
Spot-on, Kevin. Incredible game to watch. I was so pleased with the team's effort after that Edmonton loss.
@TheNYRBlog kev,i would give him and extention before cally. cheaper better skater and stronger in front of net.love cally but not at price.
Great Game More Highs than Lows more Yays than nays... Pouliot ,Brassard ,Zucc, Gerardi, Richards (great shot under pressure) and of course Hank... fourth line rules.... and yes, accolades to the Coaching staff especially AV for choosing ULF !
I'm not going to do cartwheels over this game.......
Forget the Rangers for a second. I watch a lot of Pen games. And it couldn't be just me who noticed it.....but we did not get the Pens "A" game last night. They came out flat, and at other times...what's the word....looked and played "disinterested"? I understand, last game before the Olympic break and all...best record in the conference....they looked at times like they were just waiting for this game to end and for the break to start.
And we still nearly lost to them....lol
As I've said since I came back off the IR months ago....the Rangers are a pond hockey club. We can skate with anyone. It's our physicality that's our weakness and it needs to be addressed.
The games after the break, the final 23 games, is where things are going to start to change.... especially against desperate teams....the teams who are on the bubble. Those desperate teams are going to dump the puck in and chase....keep their Dmen from pinching to keep the odd men rushes to a minimum....and just grind us out.
Kevin....I think your litmus test game is wrong. Now, while a win against a physical club like the Bruins would be impressive.....the Bruins are going to make the playoffs. No desperation there. The litmus test will come the day before the Bruins.....against a physical club that is not a lock to make the playoffs.....so they are going to come out hungry and desperate....
Saturday...March 1st.....The Flyers....in Philly. Hold your own in that game...and come out of it with a win....I'll be impressed. Then of course you play the bruins the following day...lol. That's a rough weekend right there gang.
Does this mean that Zuccarello is no longer "a shrimp" and that it now might be Kevin Delury that poopsalot?
Have to see how they play after the break, but Kreider Stepan Nash line has to have a change up unless they start producing.Maybe AV should switch Hags with Kreids to kick start Stepan and Nash.
That whole line . Zuc , Brass and Pouliot . Zuc has easily been the Rangers best player this season . Zuc may be smal . But Zuc more than makes up for it . He has the heart of a Lion and plays like a Pitbull . Let's hope he sticks around . Just got my Zuc jersey to proudly wear at MSG .
It's such a thrill to watch the Rangers meeting fan expectations under AV. I'm really loving his style, it's actually fun to watch compared to Torts system which was mostly Protect-Dump-Chase-HopeForPowerplayThatSucks. This coaching staff is MOST IMPRESSIVE.
Know what's funny is that line was made from 3 misfits. Zucc in and out of the minors and 2 1st round busts. Maybe that's why they play with a chip on their shoulders.
Rangers have become a dominant puck possesion team... Extra skater has the stats, but in 20 of their last 24 games they have had the puck for more than their opponent (what a change that is from Torts).
Might want to save cap room to resign the entire Zucc-Brass-Pouliot line since they're usually the only ones to show up every night.
The Nash-Step-Kreider line needs to start producing.
@EHBIGAPPLE He's also second on the team in points. Who exactly would be making up for that production right now?
@genetics73 I agree that Carcillo's been good, but there's been a few times recently, I would have liked to see him throw down and he didn't.
@JoeyKocur Poopsalot like every other player deserves ever last bit of criticism and praise we give them. You get what you give this isn't high school everybody wins feelgood bullshit. They are paid to win and show up ready to play nothing else.
he was a #1 pick after all
he's playing good. thats all that needs to be said
And he deserved every bit of that criticism. Far from calling him a hockey God, but when he's playing well he deserves praise.
What does it matter who gets the credit? The TEAM won, and that's what counts.
switch kredier and hagelin. hagelin is pass first guy with same speed as hagelin, which is better for nash. kreider perfect fit for callahan and richards because he's probably more shoot first. and rich needs all the speed and muscle he can get on his line. wasn't step hagelin and nash our top line last year?
He is not a 1st line center as his contract would indicate. He is abysmal on the defensive side of the puck with "a Stanley Cup contender" armed with a top flight goalie and with a vastly superior top 4 D-team.
He for 6.6M will skate in mud and avoid any kind of physical confrontation with a nifty gliding strategy that he employs in the the neutral zone and in the defensive zone. He needs open ice (PP and Shootouts) and he needs to play against a hands-off skating team and then he produces value for the NYR
If you think that is all O. K. and we should keep him for the remainder of his 6.6M per year contract and you think the Rangers should not attempt to upgrade his effectiveness at less or equal investment...well, I have a bridge to sell you.
yeah that makes zero sense. poliout has been an up and down player. there is a reason he has yet to find a real home in this league. on the other hand cally is a gutsy puts it on the line every night leader of this team. if we weren't looking so good right now, and poliout wasn't playing his best id try to get something for him while his trade value is higher, because if the player he normally is comes back his value is almost nothing.
@NYrangers79 Depth. What diehards had been clammering for.
The whole team was awful at the start. Zuccarello wasn't so much worse than everybody else. Pouliot struggled for a longer period. But this just goes to show the importance of being a little bit humble in sports AND sports commentary. When you don't understand this much, maybe it's not really worth reading the rest either.
Miller has yet to prove that he can "make plays" in the NHL. He's shown potential, yes, but he's yet to break out.
@Kevin DeLury @EHBIGAPPLEKevin, I think the strategic value of bringing Richards back for this year was that Sather from a negotiating stand point had no $ for Step and from that perspective Sather was clever, knowing he could dump Richat\rds at the end of this season.
I will give you your "bounce back season".......although it is a bit of a stretch for 6.6M wouldn't you say/
But that's not my point. Sather took a chance on bringing Richards back and so far the guy has rewarded his GM with a bounce back season.
Again, if Sather did amnesty him this past offseason, where are those 42 points coming from?
Having said that, if Sather doesn't amnesty him this upcoming offseason, that's a huge mistake.
@NYrangers79 @josh930@TheNYRBlog HOLY SHIT WE ARE SMOKING THE GOOD STUFF LATELY! thank you thank you for stating the fact that only 1 dumbs reporter has said that 7 mill and every1 else just followed suite. IVE BEEN TRYing to bang this home but even is he IS asking 7(fair), he will come down to low 6 and considering he's getting 4.8 now i just don't get what all the hoopla is about. he was never going to be traded, just like hank wasn't. the talk was just about as ridiculous as the derek jeter trade talk a few years ago when he needed a deal.
