Larry Brooks at the New York Post reports that Ryan Callahan's asking price of nearly $7 million per year for seven years has narrowed the field of potential suitors down to only those who want him as a rental.
Brooks adds that Sather appears determined not to let Callahan walk this summer without getting something in return, but has yet to receive an offer enticing enough to warrant dealing the captain before the Rangers’ final two games heading into the break.
...if what Brooks is saying is true, neither side can be too happy with these developments. Callahan hasn't found a market of teams willing to negotiate on a new contract with him to drive up the Rangers current offer, while at the same time because teams aren't interested in giving up Grade A assets to sign Callahan to a $7 million per deal, Sather is finding out that his captain's trade value isn't where he wants it to be.
...where Callahan still has the upper hand is that free agency still awaits and he'd likely be able to get close to his asking price from a team like the Sabres. Which puts Sather in a tough spot because if he doesn't want to pay the 28-year old his current demands he'll either lose him for nothing to free agency this summer or be forced to sell him for well below value.
Meanwhile, Brooks adds that the Rangers and Dan Girardi appeared to be closing the gap on an extension last week, however, he has been told that the sides have made no further progress in the interim and will likely go into the Olympic break without a new extension.
Brooks notes that league sources report the Rangers could receive substantially more on the rental market for Girardi than for Callahan.
...i have to agree that a durable, shut down defenseman, who plays a ton of minutes is more valuable to a playoff team than Callahan. But if the Rangers decide to move Girardi, who exactly are they replacing his minutes with?
Great game ,shows the future....with some upgrades ...never thought team as built would do better than a 2nd round exit ,maybe if hot -hot get to finals of conference BUT ...this is a team inherited ,CAlly is from the old regime fading ...more speed -attacking less grinding ,really not his best style along w/age ,injury ...
are we paying for what s done or whats coming....never pay for past it already been bought & paid for....we need a true #1 for Nash & Kreider ...dropping Richards next yr will complete the upgrade Lines could be....
Nash (FA) Stastny Kreider
Zucc Brassard Pouliet
Haglin Stepan Stewart (trade)
4th line has 4-5 grinders ready ....
secure all F A and RFA 's remaining
w/depth in Hartford we can handle any adversity
Defense is where Klein gave us tremendous leverage ....
C Allen -McIllrath are working to crack the line up
Plan...rent out Girardi and resign in summer ...
any run for the cup in 13-14 'now is gravy the real meat of our team is 14-15'
and the next 5 yrs ...move over Chicago
Cally and G will never look right wearing another sweater. If the hockey gods are just, they must present a solution & sign both at "reasonable, but little overpaid" contracts. Please o hockey gods, please.
I still want to rent them out then sign them back at home sweet home discounts. Dream scenario. i dont think as built we will contend for a cup this year anyway. Unless sather pulls off some power moves on the rental market himself.
It's not my money so how much they pay doesn't matter so much to me as mach as length of contract or decision to commit to the players.Even if we trade one of them I still want to get to the SC final this year and next years, so the best deal that can be made that allows for that I'm for. Anyways, its a gonna be business decision so no matter how strong people feel about it -its gonna come down to that. Can the Rangers maintain a high quality product and contend for SC in the cheapest way safest way is what its going to boil down to.
Rangers fans need to throw the whole "heart and soul" thing out the window. If we took heart and soul out of the equation and just looked at the numbers and his value to this team you would think he was a 3.5 million dollar man for 4 years. I actually find it absurd that every Ranger fan wants to keep him for the price he is asking for. If he gets traded, we're still gonna have "heart and soul", it will just be supplied by someone other than Cally, which is no big deal.
side note i was watching the predators highlights real quick to see how del zotto is doing, and the first goal against was a direct result of his giveaway.... needless to say i am very happy with klein
they're not gonna trade for anyone better than callahan this season, and I feel like we have as good a shot as any at making a run. just wait on this one, he's not going anywhere. Sather will make sure it's JUST barely worth it for him to stay, even if someone else is offereing a little more. Same goes for Girardi.
Nothing.....we need him for this year. If he leaves then he leaves. Remember he is also playing for this contract. Look at Clarkson...nough said.
http://www.extraskater.com/team/new-york-rangers/2013 If you are in to all that advanced stat stuff, this is a pretty good read
and on moving girardi, no fucking way!!! we need more D as far as I'm concerned,. disappointed with klein, we need to get meaner and stiffer back there for the playoffs. we have enough O
@TheNYRBlog This season matters too. Keep him.
I'm sorry KD but reporting every little thing BROOKSY says is foolish. 2 weeks agho it was close with girardi, now its not close to being done. he also reported they would either sign or move callahan b4 the olympics that won't happen. then we heard many teams were interested when he reported about all the scouts, now there are no suitors? cmon. isn't part of reporting knowing that teams wouldn't want him @ 7 million? he asked 7 million 2 weeks ago no? why this report now? brooks is a joke, then when the real news happens he's never the first to report it. i don't think this guy has a good pulse on the team at all I'm sorry. can't stand reading the ups and downs of this BS, when there is REAL news report it brooksy. all he did was piggy back dredgers report anyway. he didn't get the scoop on the callahan trade talk or the #'s.
Cally is damaged goods! He will never play a full season or score more than 20 goals. 5 year 4 million per thats it.
Prust = Callahan.... Cally learned from Prust how to become a rich man. Maybe he thought that since he is injury prone and might not have a long career he should get paid as much money as possible.... I think every member on this board would do what Cally will do.... go for the Gold in Sochi, then go for the gold in the NHL!!!!!!!!!!
Cally is smart.... he is like Prust..... he will get as much money as he can. Whether he is worth it or not does not matter.... he wants his payday like Prust.
Dude great post. I posted one on this site and it was almost the identical lineup as this. This is a very realistic possibility
@johnAMIRANTESrug i feel the same way. really hoping a good deal gets done eventually
@bk59 not trading Cally and/or Girardi is a mistake
I disagree Buffalo will pay him and his wife also from up there. he is gone if we dont agree. send him and get what you can girardi on other hand they have time and will resign
How has Kevin NOT commented on this!
Wait... what's that "fapping" sound?
@NYrangers79 i would lose a lot of sleep if we signed a third liner to a 6 year 6.5 million dollar deal. Cally has never put up "serious" numbers before, he isn't now, and he probably never will. He is a third line talent.
My brain hurts now.
@DubiLeetch I hear you, but it's out there, so I post it and let you guys go wild.
agree. this is all nonsense. hes trying to report on something when so far there is nothing to report on
crazy... but awesome!!! hope he's alright though. take a nice long break letang, like until 2015
he had 28 the last full season the NHL played you idiot
lol your high
you don't think cally will ever score more then 20 again? i think thats going a bit far. hes had two seasons now with injury and that has lead to less goals but the idea that we wont get there again is nuts. why even back him with a 5 year 4 million then? hes a good leader, and he will put up twenty goals, mostly every season
He can have his payday. Go ask Prust if he'd rather be playing for the rangers or Montreal. ...
Same idea with Cano. .. ask him in a yr where he rather be... in Seattle or the yanks... lmao
Not always bout the money.
But about winning
@JoeyKocur Prust is not the only other player in the NHL who wants his payday
I think remaining captain of the NYR means a lot to callahan, and sather will use that.... i think even if the rangers offer a little less than buffalo, he'll stick with the rangers. and sather will know exactly what that number is. with what he makes now, if they really want to live in buffalo (haha), he can fly via private jet to work everyday.
My bad - forgot it was Mashinter who was his true love
science geeks, here you go:
@mando24179 prust is probably pretty happy getting paid twice what we would have paid him and playing for a better team...little confused as to what you think Prust would do if he could do it all over again...
