While Ryan Callahan has been involved with a ton of action on the ice, apparently his agent hasn't been so lucky off of it, as Jeff Klein and Stu Hackel at the New York Times report that the Ranger captain's agent Steve Bartlett has not talked to Glen Sather or any other general managers recently.
Callahan's contract demands are reportedly in the seven-year, $47 million dollar range. The Rangers have allowed Callahan to speak with other teams about a new contract.
...Callahan is a heart and soul player, but his performance during these Olympics has proved he's not an elite talent and is grossly over-valuing himself.
...as I've stated all along, I'd love to have the guy back, but Sather is out of his mind if he gives Callahan anything close to the ridiculous asking price.
Meanwhile, Larry Brooks at the New York Post has found a replacement on the right side should Sather trade Dan Girardi...it's Ryan McDonagh.
Yes, Brooks feels that McDonagh's outstanding performance on the right side of Ryan Suter during Team USA's shootout victory vs. Russia yesterday means that Vigneault should move the 24-year old defenseman to his off side and bump Marc Staal up to the first pair.
...oh Brooksie, you're so cute. Then, maybe Sather can coax Leetch out of retirement to fill Staal's place on the second pairing. Makes sense to me.
chances of cup with team as is ? I dont see us no better than 7-8 in the elite 8 of hockey..... 1st its 5-3 west to east teams in talent -depth and odds to win cup.... only have 1 series w/west champ .....east is pitt - boston -chicago- NY
I see major need in top line center...(said it many times) statsny in 14-15 sets the depth in centers ...ststsny-stepan-brassard- 3 lines of attacking excellence
think how good stepan is when matched against the #2's same as brassard...
MY POINT: DONT MAKE DECISIONS WITH THE HEART... WE ARE SO CLOSE.... WE DONT NEED NEW BAGGAGE,WE NEED TO MAKE THE NEXT MOVE FWD,IF WE CAN GET A TOP #1 NOW ...DO IT ASAP
every thing else falls into place w/d & goalie ready for the top o to get us Lord stanleys hardware
Yeah...signing OVERVALUED players at or near 30 to long term expensive contracts yields exactly ONE cup what...every 75 years? Sounds like a good plan. Keep pulling that oar as they beat the drum, all while telling yourself that THIS time it's going to work, THIS time is different. Maybe they'll let you up for a quick view of the TV so you can watch the Bruins.
I keep reading on this blog that he isn't looking for 7 million and 7 years but all reports show otherwise. He wants 6.5-7 million for 7yrs. The rangers offered him 6million for 5 years. I don't see how this is getting done. Too big of a gap. Here is a very recent write up of both Girardi and Cally....
If Sather is unable to resign Girardi, I'd like to see Matt Greene from the Kings brought over. Similar dman to G, just much more nasty. Could fit well. He's in the last year of his 3.25, and has been the odd man out on the right side with the Kings. Just returned from a concussion pre olympics, wears an A. One year older, but I'm starting to worry about our right side. Idk, just thinking out loud.
He is an awesome player with great leadership. I dont want to lose him. Though he is asking for way to much for my liking. The re-signing of cally ( if he gets what he wants) will mean we lose someone else on our team that can equally, or does more for the team. Idk, i dont wana lose him but to me its not worth 7+ mil a year. Hes not a 30-40 goal scorer, and you cant put a price on what he does, but you can get a player that hits, and can play like him for more than half of what hes asking.
@TheNYRBlog Ignore last tweet. Misread something.
@TheNYRBlog SEE YOU IN ST LOUIS
@TheNYRBlog Move McD? Torts was right. Brooksie probably got beat up at the bus stop and came away with brain damage to suggest that.
We know Cally is not an elite player, we know he's very valuable to this team. We know his market value is in the high 5s. The Rangers are willing to offer him 6. Damn, can't we get this done!
Not going to lie, I'm a little concerned the Rangers are going to think that will work and therefore Girardi is expendable. Still think Girardi re-signs (sooner rather than later) but I would like Mac to say something along the lines of "I prefer to be on the left" just to get the thought out of their minds lol
@Say my Name nice jab...not to sharp but to the pt....sather is on major upswing ..if he continues trend we will be waving as we go up the ladder as the Bruins start that slide down...Big injury to D & should have never let horton run away.
Yup, about 6.8 for 7 years. That's about the only thing that has remained consistent. Either he goes to Buff town for a fat paycheck to be the centerpiece of a rebuilding franchise or he settle for 6M at 5 or 6 years to play with a legit contender. I hope he makes the right call.
@NYrangers79 you are back & forth...cally's #'s are not going to work...as well as style, injury,3rd line status dictate we get as much
as possible ..contingency plan on G man is needed due to amt of time he plays ...but not hard to figure out...dont be afrraid of the moves coming as well as needed .... we could re -sign either as F A's... let this play out as it should /could ...meant to be !
@NYrangers79 WOW Really?? Comparing Cally and Brown on the same level? Any GM/Coach would take Brown over Cally in a heartbeat. Cally hasnt played a full season in the last 5 years. Dustin Brown is consistent every year, Cally is the complete opposite. How can you be a leader when you are hurt half the games. Are you blinded by pure love of Cally? Come on, there is not way Cally is worth 6 mil a year especially if its going to be 6-7 years.
Its the years that are the problem, and he doesnt deserve 6mil. He barely deserves 5.5mil. He is a 3rd line player with a physical game. Come on, dont buy the hype.
Doesn't matter to AV. MDZ "preferred" to play a certain side and I think we all remember what AV said after.
@Say my Name 14 yrs is the whole pkg ...? keep it real or dont bother ,since Mac for gomez and on out he has steadily built up to this pt where he has made the moves that has the team ready to win and invested in the right way to win and continue winning...moves like Torts out for A V show the evolution of his usefulness and wore out his welcome ...we will get more from foundation torts built...same as the players we may move out now...
we only need a #1 center (stastny14') ,he has one of the deepest 6 d group in game, including Conor Allen & McIllrath Bickle ...as depth
we are on the precipice of greatness for 5yrs...3cups ....2 win 1 lose to keep it real .hope you guys can band aid your selves in the playoffs ....
@TheKing yes, that is obvious about the years being a problem, common knowledge but according to all sources his agent is not budging on price as well. I'm not sure what hype you think I'm buying into??? I only stated facts in my comnent you're replying to. Not opinions. He may not deserve 6M but the Rangers are willing to pay that according to sources and a top 3rd line player who can neutralize an opponents top lines, score 25, play well on both ends of special teams and wears a C is worth the high 5s in today's market. Facts my friend. Not hype.
@cardboardcllctr Exactly. Hence the reason I'm concerned. I'm sure Mac will be fine if they did that but not sure about the bottom 4 D. And personally I want Girardi to stay.
what yr's!! was it not to long ago the bruins were last place fodder ? even the "Boys' dont pull last place finishes or am i a fanantical didnt think my answers thru kind of guy , i would like the manual on your definitons so we dont under or over state ALL THE FACTS you seem to not answer ,Sather since torts is fine ,in fact since torts hiring he's one of the best GMs and will prove it with this team he is finalizing this yr .PUT SOME FACTS UP or shut up!!
Christ Tom, get it together and think through your statements. I said "top tier team" for years. YOU immediately qualify that as Cup Winner?? Then you once again dismiss things that don't support you ("accidental run", "stole the cup"). You have classic fan vision - zero objective view. In a bar I might entertain you for a few minutes and slam your inconsistencies, refusal to stay on point and illogic, but to do this while typing is just tiresome. Fine....you be the ONE whocan't see that Sather's run has been at best mediocre and that the Bruins are not a top tier team for years. Ha.
Hey ,your statement of Bruins being a top tiered team for years ???what you smokin? before cup in 11'and accidental run over toronto in gm 7last yr that sling shot the B's past the boys last playoffs to a resounding thud in finals .....it was 72' last when the Bruins stole a cup from the Rangers ...long time between sips from the Hardware...EH !!!! thats my canuck reference...
@Say my Name @TomDundiecome on...that is a child like analogy ....keep it apple to apples ...what has he done so wrong since my date of accountability (5 yrs ) and why if a ranger fan dont you support the growth from a philosophy of buyem & try em in past to what is built now ....we did the same in 93-94 till the deadline then traded everyone for 1 cup...
if we hold our talent we would have had 3-5 real runs to a cup not a "get hot for a run" "hot goaltender can carry us" I wanna be the big dog expecting to win not getting hot or lucky at the right time............
Well...there is no disputing that Boston is a top tier team and have been for years - something that has eluded the larger market NY team for decade after decade, so any rocks you try and lob over the wall are likely not noticed by Bruins fans. BTW - I am a Ranger fan first - not that it matters. You saying that THIS year is the referendum on Sather speaks volumes and merely supports your confirmation bias. I suppose you choose a good heart surgeon if he saves the guy currently on the table and disregard the last 12 out of 13 he killed??? Too funny Tom. Too funny.
@Say my Name @TomDundieREAL meant I aint kissin Sather s butt...his 14 yr history is barely passing...since hiring torts (5yrs)he hasnt made any mistakes ...all moves has gotten us to a #1 center away from staying a force for 3-5 yrs...basically that's the missing piece ,he has built us from goal out ...our D is primed & ready w/G or not...(sign or trade )
imagine if M Sauer didnt go down (concussions) what would be saying then...
conclusion : Sather's legacy is all on this groups outcome by end of yr and start of next .... thats it ! judge it by the results coming BUT all indicators are he will MAKE the right move s with cally/G and get them signed or traded for value ...NEED #1 CENTER ASAP
in order to carry the cup!!!!!!!!!!
good luck dreamin Boston's got another miracle on ice program in them ...they are beat up and short (HORTON)....D MAN GIRARDI LOOK GOOD IN B&G sorry rental only we sign him back & win many cups in future...ha hahha good luck !
Look Tom....holding up, or pointing to individual trades is classic confirmation bias. In the end Sather is judged on performance. and his performance HAS BEEN MEDIOCRE. By what measure could you describe it as anything else??? Qualifying for the playoffs in a league where 50% of the teams make it is hardly an indicator of anything but mediocrity. Between the Worlds above cited the rest. Talk about keeping it real. Please....I'm all for hoping that Sather can improve on his run of CLEAR mediocrity, but to not even see it for what it is...wow! Is it hard to type while you're rubbing Sather's feet??? (I took the high road there - wanted to say something else HAHA) Peace.
@Nyrangers @Say my Name Dude, 16 teams out of 30 make the playoffs and yeah, give credit where it's due but for a top market team 8 out of 9 years is not a big feat. One trip to the EC finals, twice to the 2nd round and 5 ousters in the 1st round ( if memory serves). That to me is mediocre especially considering our financial superiority as compared with most of the league. Hind sight is 20/20 and even though as a lowly fan I knew he was about to bomb with some of his moves ( how a mere fan can predict the outcome of something a GM with 50 NHL years under his belt can't is absolutely incomprehensible) I'm not basing my opinion on past seasons but rather on how he has build such a soft team ill equipped to make a serious playoff run. How he could underestimate the impact of letting go of his grinders (Slats' own words), when I knew better, and trust me I'm no hockey expert, and then has done nothing to change that other than hiring a new coach with a new system but AV system won't work because without big tough players the speed game will get stifled by clogging zones in those small NHL rinks and then beating us down with superior strength and grit. The league may have respect for Slats but I think he's an idiot. Hoping he proves me wrong and lands some good trades before the deadline.
@Say my Name @TomDundie Glen Sather is one of the best general managers in the game. Other GM's around the league have tons of respect for Glen. He has made a few bad signings, but so has every single GM in this league. Name me a team that doesn't have 2,3, or 4 bad signings in the last 14 years. The trades he makes are unbelievable too. A consistent playoff team is hard to assemble, and Glen Sather has assembled consistant playoff teams over the past 8, going on 9 years. Every single year we made the playoffs, except the 1 year we missed it by a shootout. That's not an easy task in the NHL.
@Say my Name @TomDundieor maybe he'll get caught smoking crack in the bathroom with Neil Smith... for every good move Slats has made he's made 2 or 3 terrible ones and has built a soft team despite being a tough player who presumably knows the value of toughness at the NHL level. It's absolutely unfathomable. We're playing better and we have a pretty good team but what's going to happen down the stretch when the heat is on. Can these players withstand the physical onslaught they are about to experience? Doubtful, Even if they man up they just don't have the right kind of players to balance out the small skill guys. but of course I'm rooting for them and miracles can happen. . Slats is bad news and our chances of winning a cup are greatly diminished because of it and always have been while he's been at the helm. .What exactly has he done lately to be on an "upswing"?
