After last night's bombshell that Ryan Callahan's contract demands are closer to $7 million per year than the originally reported $6 million, it seemed like a foregone conclusion that the Rangers captain will be playing elsewhere before the end of the week.
But Katie Strang at ESPN.com gives us a glimmer of hope as she reports that Callahan and the Rangers will sit down this week to discuss a possible extension...
"I'm going to circle back with the Rangers this week," Callahan's agent Steve Bartlett told ESPNNewYork.com.
Strang adds that Callahan's agent has fielded calls from multiple teams, but the sense is that many of those calls were to gauge just how seriously the Rangers are about trading the 28-year old.
...unfortunately, both sides have been negotiating through the media, which, as we all learned during the lockout last year, never works. So it's great to they'll be getting together this week.
...my one concern is that Callahan's demands seem to be going up instead of down. I have no problem with him shooting for the moon on his initial offer, but from my experience in negotiations the expectations are that both sides will give a little until they can find some common ground. Unless of course Callahan senses a weakness from Sather and is trying to bully him. I'm fairly confident both sides want this to work, but from what I've seen play out the last week I'm starting to question that thinking.
...i also find it interesting that Strang is now reporting that Callahan's agent has been contacted by multiple teams when initial reports had just one team calling. It doesn't seem like there's been serious discussions, however, the more teams interested the more Callahan probably thinks he has the upper hand in negotiations. At the same time, Sather can't be too upset seeing multiple teams showing interest as it'll likely drive up the trade value of his captain.
...it truly is amazing to witness all the moving parts of this saga. Riveting stuff.
Listened to 2nd half of the Fan Forum on John Giannone's podcast tonight. Couldn't help but notice Callahans favorite player growing up: Pat LaFontaine! Added that after Cally scored his first nhl goal, LaFontaine called him to say congrats.
What are the chances Callahan gets either signed or traded before this Friday's Olympic roster freeze?
Dreger: 50/50. LOL! Sherlock! i guess everyone of us guys can work for ESPN. :)
7 million is way too much but for all you bandwagon, time to throw Cally under the bus riders, Ill say this - losing Cally will leave a very HUGE hole in this team, and if you don't see that you're all in denial. You're the same bunch who said Prusty wasn't worth the $, and have spent every day since saying, "we're too soft, we need an enforcer, we need to sign a heavyweight or we won't go deep," You think Prust left a hole?? wait until this actually happens and then maybe you'll realize what Callahan brings (brought) to the table. With that said, I think a deal will get done and Cally's terms will come down, right now I think it is what it is. Two sides playing the game that is negotiation.
Zucc was man to his word. McD was a team player. hanks a top 3 goalie every year. richards earned his contract and so did nash. cally earned his 5 yr 5 million dollar one so he should be a man of his word and remain a ranger and take what he is worth you people who argue the numbers. Its 25 million dollars who on this blog will make that in a life time let alone 5 years time after a 4+ mill bridge deal. get over it and he would have a job probably paying over a million for the next 30 yrs with the club in some aspect. fuck you all he is being handed a front loaded lottery tkt and spitting in its face fuck him he aint that good to spit in the face of 25-30 million and a life time annuity after that. I hope he reads that because he is a moron
Maybe if they don't sign Callahan they can take the money they save and put into scouting so they could possibly fill up their farm system with enough talent just waiting to fill a roster spot that this might not even have been that big a discussion
And this is why I love Zucc. Zucc, before coming back to the NYR said explicitly that 1) he only wanted to return to the NHL with the NYR, and he made good on that promise. 2) was willing to take a discount to return to the NYR even though he could make more elsewhere, and he made good on that promise. 3) he's a small dude and said he could play in the big boy's game, and he's made good on that promise. Zucc FTW!
listen he is the only player I know that hurt his thumb celebrating a goal I think its time to move on !!!
the only thing is neither side is coming out and saying anything public so we dont know for sure whats going on maybe callys side should say something probably the smart move for his image and fan support and puts pressure on sather. just saying but if it is true fuck him enjoy those buffalo or colorado (hopefully) winters
The only thing we all know is he is the Captain and the heart and soul of this team. He either signs or gets moved before the trade deadline.
A) All this grief over Cally is getting out of hand no one knows a damn thing about his demands or the Rangers except those who are in the meetings.
B) He has a family and his career could be over in a split second. You damn well know and better believe hes going to try and get the best contract he can get for himself to protect his family.
C) Sather knows the range years/money he wants to sign Cally but hes gonna do his best to get that as low as he can too. Thats why its called negotiating. Eventually they might both meet somewhere in eachothers comfort zone if not Thank you for everything you've given this organization over the years good luck out west wish we could have retired your number here.
D) Whatever the hell happens hes either going to continue to be our Captain or hes not and none of it takes away from all those years he gave us and hopefully will continue to give us.
Stop with the bullshit he not asshole or whatever you guys been calling him, hes a husband and father first. Think about it I love this team too but my family will always come first.
I wonder if this is really a years issue, a dollars issue, or both. Looks like everyone is pretty much in agreement that 7/42 is a ridiculously high demand. But what about something like 7/36? He gets the security of the 7 year deal with the dollars of the middle ground between $5M and $7M, and he gets to stay in a huge market when he can make more moychandizing money than he could anywhere else. I'd be OK with that because I really don't think salaries are going to be coming down any.
Could this high salary demand be Cally's way of "asking for a trade?" Under AV, Cally isn't getting PP time and he's not on the 1st PK unit. The Hags-Richie-Cally line doesn't have great chemistry like the other lines. It's just not feasible for the team to meet his demands and sign most of their UFAs and RFAs. And next season, they'll need cap space to re-sign Stepan and Staal. I don't see why Captain Cally would want to put the Rangers in cap hell unless he wants out of NY.
did anyone ever think its better for him to go. look at Dubi he has blossomed again out of NY . so maybe he wants to go get paid and try to become a scorer instead of a grinder elsewhere. he isnt on pp anymore and tell me one guy making 6 million or more who isnt on their teams power play units. NONE it may be a blessing for both parties
I hope everyone realizes that if the rangers give him this big contract they can never trade him. Cause no team will take an over paid 3rd liner. So for everyone saying he is are heart n soul. He can also be an anchor down the line. I say trade him.
listen if you told one of our minor league player that they would make team next year if the blocked shots hit and went into the corners and had to pk. you dont think miller or someone else could or would do that in a second and yes we lose a captain (leader) but that can be replaced right on this roster. so trade him Miller gets a roll and McD gets the C and we move on and posibly pick up a good player or picks
great, now he wants 7 M, maybe tomorrow when i open this blog it will say that Callahan wants 8+ M. This is absurd!! I know that most of NHL is bussines only, and that's the problem. Cally says he wants to stay here... well, his contract demands are saying completely opposite. He is not worth that money. Cally doesn't care about the NYR, only about himself. He should surender that C letter. Look at Zucc, he took discount and will probably do it again this summer. I want more players like that. If Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Kane can take discounts for the team to be better in this Salary cap era, so should Callahan, even more because he is a captain. If he only cares about how to make more money then fuck him and trade him! New York Rangers above all!!!
best line I have read yet is why Buffalo will give him what hes asking for... To build a team around him. you dont build a team around a third liner, pker, oft injured so called leader. so I guess Buffalo is getting rid of all contracts and promoting their kids and filling in with the trades they make at the deadlimne well Cally enjoy tutoring first round picks for the next 3 years and by the time there gelling you'll be retired
This is all so sad. I don't see anyone diving for more loose pucks, or anyone more willing to block passing lanes and shots, even in non-ideal situations that could cause bodily harm. Cally is irreplacable. There is no one that combines that grit with the level of skill and finesse. The quintessential captain. This SUCKS. Makes you hate the salary cap.
brandon prust was let go because of money nothing else hasnt scored more than 13 goals since was a ranger and no more than 5 with montreal what he brought was sticking up for his teammates like cally and hank that no one else did thats why we miss him but we have carcillo now maybe his character isnt the same but he has 2 goals in a handful of games with us and not as many teams taking shots at us lately and guess what we are winning alot more. cally is replaceable I know you guys do not think so but he is , but if he signs for 30 mil over 5 thats more than hes worth as a pure hockey player but add his intangibles and then its fair but 6-7 million please
that's just stupid. i think i became dumber from reading that
wait till Zucc negotiates his UFA deal
@shoot_the_goalie I was having a little fun by saying he should be captain yesterday but the example he sets by his play you got love it as fan and i think as player you would be inspired or embarrassed not give 100%
@shoot_the_goalieI'd like to envision Zucc having a career like Martin St.Louis.
No one has said that..... just what he asks is insane and if i were the Rangers i would NOT sign him at those demands
5 yrs @ 5 mil.....He would be 34yrs old and can still get another lower contract as well
The things is by the 3 or 4 yr his body is gonna be a mess
injuries have already taken a tole on him...
love the guys heart and effort. But sometimes the body can't match that over time
Maybe. Heres another thought. Why does someone whos role is shrinking deserve $6 mil? Also, step and staal are signed for next year.
@Bring back Langdon miller is not the answer he is a mediocre player have gone and watched multiple wolfpack games; he isn't that good. at all.
All that doesn't constitute demanding 6 to 7 million... and the have the nerve to ask for 7 yrs on top of it
They offered 6 million for 5 yrs and he didn't take it.... that should say alot bout him
messier was replaced, gretzky was replaced all were captains those 2 were larger than life too. cally will and can be replaced time heals all wounds
also what gets him injured all the time you have to think hes going to cut that down or out eventually in order to remain healthy
Almost no one is irreplaceable. Guys like Crosby and Ovi are as close to irreplaceable as youll get and Cally, as much as he is loved by fans, is not even close to that caliber of player.
Agreed. Prust was let go because of his price tag but nobody realized how important a role he really played, and the impact he had on the team. Nobody recognized that until he was gone.
Cally is replaceable. Were all replaceable but his absence will be felt without a doubt. 7 mill is too much but to simplify his game as washed up shot blocker is laughable - he brings way more to the table then many here seem to recognize and or remember
IF those are his demands then yes the Rangers shouldn't sign him for that. But I haven't heard any details from anyone inside those negotiations just a bunch of talking heads speculating on rumors from other talking heads. Unless I missed an interview somewhere. Keep in mind these are the same people who for 3 months said DZ would be traded to here and to there every single day until they were eventually right but again unless I missed a story and judging by the surprise from everyone no one ever mentioned the Predators as a possibility. As far as i'm concerned it's all hyperbullshit until its final or someone in those meetings make it public. No sense getting worked up about it i think he knows he won't be making 7+ a year in a Rangers Jersey but why not ask, maybe Sather is feeling generous that day.
He's 28 now, 29 in March. A 5 year deal puts him at 33, but nearly the same money for 1 additional year, and it's suddenly a bad deal? And his body is not breaking down. 2 of his major injuries were broken bones blocking shots. Other than that he hasn't missed a ton of time prior to the shoulder issue. Hell, everyone's hard-on Evander Kane has been injury-prone in only his second season, yet we're willing to give up 1/2 the roster for him? Makes no sense.
@Bring back Langdon Dude, obviously those two guys were never "replaced". And as for Cally, I'm sure he could be ... eventually ... but not through a trade, and not this year. We'll have to get another kind of asset, maybe a grinder or a young prospect and a draft pick, but there won't be another Cally on our team for a while.
yes richards came with aresume callahan dug ditches get over the love and come to your senses prust numbers he didnt deserve what montreal gave him and hes proving it dont want to see another untradeable contractfor 7 years from a 20 goal scorer who doesnt even play on the pp what dont you guys get
@mando24179 "Cally is over fucking rated by fans like u... that seems to be emotionally involved"
Sorry, just had to laugh. Isn't that the point???
Don't get me wrong, I love coming on here and talking stats and dollars, proposing line combinations and trade proposals. But at the end of the day, isn't the reason we all do it because we're emotionally invested in this team and its players?
Because when it was 2-1 with seconds to go against the Islanders at Yankee Stadium my blood pressure was thru the roof, and I was practically levitating off my couch? Because when we finally started making the playoffs a few years ago it would take me 2 hours to fall asleep after a game because I was so amped up? Because in 1994 when we finally won a cup people said "Now I can die in peace?", not now I can go talk to my friends about new contracts and trades?
The amount of information we have at our finger tips these days, combined with everyone's involvement in Fantasy sports really seems to be leading some people in the wrong direction, myself included at times. You can say things like "at the end of the day, it's a business", but quite frankly, it's only a business if the check that feeds your family says "The Madison Square Garden Company" at the top of it, or has your signature at the bottom.
Sorry, again, but if you come on here because CBA's and Salary Caps are your undying passion, I'd tell you you should take your passion and go help fix our economy, not sit on a blog all day devoted to a sports team.
hes a shot blocker and a grinding physical (somewhat hes a little guy)player its inevitable hes going to break more bone while block shot and throwing his body around. then what is he not even a pker and more hes a 4th line guy who may score 15-20 if lucky. I dont have a crystal ball but a man of his talent doesnt get 6-7 mill for 6-7 yrs and if he doesnt get it EFF cally because then he care nothing for the team he professes his love for and just on the name on the back
Oh that's good, throw a few more "f" bombs out there, it really helps demonstrate your IQ! Yes, Evander Kane made the WHL Western All-Star team. Great job, quick let's put him in the HOF!!! And yea, he "carried" his team to no better than a 10th place conference finish in his 1st 3 years in the league. Ooooh, quite an accomplishment there. Rather than responding to the rest of your jibberish, maybe I'll just wait until you take you head out of your ass to actually read the comments you are responding to...nah, not worth the effin' time! Have a magical day!
Evander kane is an all star and can carry a team
Cally cant.... wake up dude....Cally is over fucking rated by fans like u... that seems to be emotionally involved and arranged to this guy like he is our savior or we can't win without him...
Who u think puts more fear into a goalie. Evander kane or cally? Whoever says Cally doesn't know a damn thing about hockey or evaluating talent... let alone kane is 4 yrs younger and a sniper compared to Cally and yeah he fights as well and wins
Rather than think big picture as in winning a fucking cup. Fuck Cally if he wants that money over 7 yrs he is out of his mind
I wat some championships not a 3rd line grinder. Who thinks he is a notch below ovechkin or crosby....at 7 million for 7 yrs
Whoever doesn't see that is as stupid as his agent for even demanding that
