Ryan Callahan’s agent, Steve Bartlett, said in an e-mail to Pat Leonard of the Daily News that he's had “a couple discussions” with the Rangers in the past 24 hours but that there was “nothing more to report” other than they've touched base.
In related news, Katie Strang at ESPN.com says the Rangers and Dan Girardi’s camp have been in discussions over the past week and a half and the lines of communication remain open.
However, Larry Brooks at the New York Post adds that while the two sides were believed “close” to an agreement for a couple of weeks, talks the last few days seem to have hit a roadblock.
...if nothing else, at least all sides are talking. Now, they could be discussing possible trade scenarios, but it's better than hearing it's radio silence.
Meanwhile, the rumor mill continues to churn as Darren Dreger discussed Callahan's trade value on TSN radio this afternoon noting that for the Rangers to land Martin St. Louis they'd likely have to also include Chris Kreider or Derek Stepan along with the Rangers captain.
...the only thing more ridiculous than giving Callahan $7 million per year is sending him along with Kreider or Stepan to Tampa for St. Louis.
...keep in mind that Dreger was neither confirming nor denying that Tampa has requested Kreider or Stepan, but merely stating that Callahan alone is not enough to land St. Louis.
The Callahan rumors don't end there as Pierre LeBrun at ESPN.com notes that the St. Louis Blues have been connected to Callahan. While Bruce Garrioch at the Ottawa Sun takes it a step further by re-visiting the Callahan for Chris Stewart trade.
...there's obviously a Callahan/Blues link, so don't think for a second that Backes and Oshie haven't been lobbying St. Louis management to acquire their Team USA teammate.
...if Sather is able to bring back Stewart and a first round pick for Callahan from the Blues, I'd be more than ok with it.
On the Ryan Kesler front, Brooks notes that Sather is expected to check in on the availability of the Vancouver center despite a reported rift between him and Alain Vigneault from their Canucks days. Brooks does add that sources have indicated there's no substantial or outstanding issues between the men despite those reports.
Kesler, who may have broken his hand dring the Olympics, does have a complete no trade clause.
Initial reports stated that Kesler wanted out of Vancouver, but he has since denied those rumors.
...you have to figure Torts would love to have Callahan back on his team, so if there really aren't any lingering issues between Kesler and Vigneault, this could be a good match. Although, as some have pointed out in the comments section, if you're down on Callahan because of his propensity to be injured, be prepared to feel the same way towards Kesler.
Finally, Craig Custance at ESPN.com says if the Capitals are looking to make a bold move at the trade deadline they should go after Girardi.
...Girardi for Carlson?
All these trade rumors got me thinking. What was the worst trade that the NYR have made in the last 25 years or so?
Surely Darren Dreger must realize Glen Sather would be only trying to get a return for Callahan, not gut the team.
Since the Rangers are playing Chicago, I decided to look up the salaries of Seabrook and Keith, both of who are terrific D-men. Girardi is good, but I don't think he's as good as these two and yet he wants their kind of money. I don't think so.
Dear Santa,All i want for Christmas is to get rid of a greedy 2nd/3rd lined injury proned grinder player. Someone that is easily replacable with 5 million a year.I have decided that since greedy Cally is gone, that i will sell my home, away, and wc jersey. I realized that my favorite player (who said he wants to stay with the Rangers and give a discount) is actually trying to get almost 40 percent more then hes worth. He doesn't care about the Rangers or a Cup, he just wants to get paid. So get rid of him now.
I'm still hoping it plays out like this (or something close)
If Kesler is really in play as is Bieska, send Callahan , Girardi, & Boyle( & maybe mid round conditional picks based on if Callahan or Girardi resign ) back to Torts in Vancouver for those 2. 3 pending UFA's for 2 players with 2 years & good cap numbers.
If not. I'd take Chris Stewart in STL for Callahan
Girardi to Anaheim for Vatanen & Etem. (They may offer their #1 from Ottawa from the Bobby Ryan Deal or their own # 1 but i'd rather get Etem)
This is IF they don't sign the extensions that Slats has laid out as i understand them
Callahan 5 years @ 6 Million
Girardi 5 years @ 5.5 Million
i think MSL would require younger players (Miller, Fasth, Lindeberg) and/or high picks.
Not that interested at that cost.
I wonder how much the media affects trades. Cally for MSL might have been a done deal like Boomer said, and it broke and everybody started saying how crazy of a trade that is and Yzerman started thinking, "Oh, maybe I shouldn't do this. Maybe I should ask for Kreider and Callahan."
BTW Rangers' fans are idiots if they want Callahan back after this. If he isn't traded then that is a failure because he is walking at the end of the year. He wants 7 for 7 and is not worth even close to that. TSN reported that 99.9% chance that Callahan is traded. I think Girardi will stay but Callahan is as good as gone and rightfully so. Sather would actually be hurting the Rangers longterm if he does not trade Callahan or if he signs him. Yes, if Callahan is signed the Rangers are screwed for the next 7 years
The comment streams have been the most entertaining thing I've seen for this entire olympic break LMFAO - and I use to think this was the most polite hockey blog in the universe but it's like 99% agree. We love Cally - can't pay him. Th-th-th-that's all folks.........................
I heard we are trading Cally for Quint. "I'll catch that bird for ya. But it ain't gonna be easy. Bad fish. Not like going down to the pond and chasing blugills, or tommycods. This shark...swallow you whole..." Personally, I fully endorse this trade.
What I have heard: Callahan + 2 prospects (Fast + Bourque ?) for MSL, and If Callahan signs with Tampa, we get a draft pick coming back. What I am hoping for: Girardi to Ducks for Emerson Etem
I am assuming they both are gone and will be disappointed if Sather caves in to their ridiculous demands.
King and Domi for Olczyk
Gartner for Anderson
Lidster and Tikkanen for Nedved
Nedved and Zubov for Robataille and Samuelsson
York for Murray and Poti
Kovalev for Nedved
the Tyutin trade
I really hate all the Nedved trades. That guy was a pure waste!
I know some will say the Carpenter trade, but I'm gonna go with a very controversial one and say Amonte for Matteau/Noonan. Yes, Matteau scored two of the most important goals in NYR history, but Amonte went on to become a USA HOFer and was an elite scorer for many years after. With the exception of Matteau's 2 goals (albeit very significant ones), both he and Noonan really didn't bring anything else to the NYR table. That said, I still love Matteau and his beat up skates held together with duct tape and tar.
@Scott from SEC 224 I honestly don't want Captain Greed anymore. Couldn't care less what he makes.
Or they use it as a litmus test, to see how popular/unpopular the move would be?
@mansond @TheNYRBlog Thought Buffalo said they won't trade for Cally and wait until offseason.
@Say my Name I think some people are forgetting a few facts that NHL GMs are not. 1. Cally is a rental. Last I checked "Lame Ducks" are not worth a ton on the trade market and 2. Cally's stock has slipped. He had shoulder surgery which has a history of trimming a players productivity and he has not been as tenacious this year.so if we are expecting to get a one on one deal with a high caliber player we should throw in swamp land in Florida as the hook. Someone might be foolish enough to take him on a trade for an asset for the rights to have him for the playoff run and the advantage of being able to negotiate till July 1 but if he ain't biting on a 6M 5-6 yr. contract with the Rangers then he intends to hold out till free agency, so the next possibility is to use him in a package. That is plausible. Otherwise you're talking mid-range prospects or draft picks. No thanks. Let him stay the season and walk.
I'm not so sure. If we get Quint we're gonna need a bigger boat.
No point in getting MSL hes gonna be like Richards they all stop trying after coming to NYR
@iwantgaborik Yes and Keep your hands of Kreider too.
@shoot_the_goalie Oh you just hit a nerve buddy - on the level of the Mets trading Seaver, or trading Cone for Kent, and then trading away Kent lol - Mets and Rangers have more ex players that went on to be all stars than the rest of the leagues combined. How the f* do you trade Tony Amonte, break up the Mess-Amonte-Gravy line. Yeah they won and they had an over abundance of talent and not so much grit but how do you trade Amonte for freakin Noonan and Matteau. Any asshole could have kicked a puck in and win a double over time when both teams are exhausted so the fact that Matteau "saved the day" is meaningless. Maybe Amonte scores a hat trick and the Rangers win in 6 games. ASSHOLES!!!!
Well, NYR did eventually get Michael Sauer from that trade, so that trade is only horrible because Sauer's career is over. If Sauer still plays and plays like he was, the sting would be lessened. I will agree to say that was one of the most poorly executed trades in NYR - no class by Slats, trading a NYR legend on his birthday.
Well let's not all act like 12 year olds. It's a business and #24 is being misinformed as to his worth by his agent. The NHLPA also encourages players to get their "top dollar". They don't care where they play.
If CALLY leaves or is traded, he's Kelly Kiso minus a 60 point season. Who'll remember ?
@shoot_the_goalie @Betweentheworlds@gravey94That's right. Everyone knew that the team was going to tank after '94 and they were caving to the pressure of no cup in 43 years. It was obvious to even the beat writers lol. Yeah, Keenan ran the boat. I hear you are very persuadable when you are on coke lol, or maybe Mike used those nast little creatures on Smith from Star Trek - Wrath of Khan that crawled into your ears
Todd Marchant straight up for MacTavish. Keenan (er...I mean Smith) really decimated the NYR future with those 94 trades. However, hard to argue cause they did win the Cup. But those trades are a big reason why the NYR went into the dark abyss for years after
@shoot_the_goalie @gravey94As I said above you can make an all star team out of ex Rangers and ex-Mets. They are the same team in different sports with the same stupid front office. BTW good ones Gravey. Nedved sucked and I was very disapointed that he was given a 2nd tour of duty though the Czech-Mates line was entertaining at times. I actually didn't mind the Gartner trade as much as the Amonte one even though Gartner was one of my favorite players cause he was older and we were pretty stacked with talent but needed a bit more grit but we could have done a bit better than just Anderson. How did we get McTavish BTW - I can't remember....
@shoot_the_goalie @BetweentheworldsYes, I'm known for sarcasm but I am totally serious. that was an awful trade in my book. Look what Amonte did both before and after that trade and that trade meant the best line in hockey (or 1 of the best) was sacrificed. Noonan was a good player. No doubt. Matteau? Pleez! He would be long forgotten if not for the fortuitous goals to trade them for the perennial all star and stud of the "All Hair Team" Amonte no way. Freakiin Mike Keenan! he gets way too much credit IMO
If #24 goes to FA and anyone gives him 7 years at 6.75 million, I'd be flabbergasted.
Buffalo will be giving him a Bobby Holik deal and will be bidding against themselves.
Sorry, but I don't buy that he's being "misinformed" by his agent. I understand it's a business, but Cally's "babe in the woods" routine is getting tiresome.
