Saturday night, Boomer Esiason dropped a bomb on Rangers fans which had us in full frenzy mode yesterday.
The WFAN morning show host, former NFL quarterback and crazed Rangers fan all but implied that Ryan Callahan will be traded to Tampa for Martin St. Louis.
And now this morning he finally acknowledged it on his radio show...
In response, the "real" journalists have decided to step in and put Boomer in place by reporting there's nothing to these rumors.
Larry Brooks at the New York Post says that Glen Sather has inquired about swapping Callahan for St. Louis, but Tampa GM Steve Yzerman (who initially snubbed St. Louis for Team Canada's Olympic roster) showed no interest in dealing his leading scorer in exchange for a rental.
Brooks adds that Sather, who is willing to offer Callahan a five year contract for approximately $6 million per (perhaps a tad more), is not amenable to sending the required young pros, prospects and/or draft picks to the Lightning with his captain in order to acquire St. Louis, who has a full no-move clause in his contract that expires after next season.
Meanwhile, Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune added that he has no knowledge that a trade for St. Louis is in the works and feels that the rumor is nothing more than Sather trying to put pressure on Callahan camp.
...i was very happy to see Boomer finally admit what the rumor was this morning. I fully acknowledge that he has legit sources as he's nailed a few predictions recently (return of Avery, NHL lockout and Kevin Klein) and I truly feel that he's received sound information by one of those reliable informants, but reading through all his tweets yesterday it almost seemed like he was trolling Rangers fans. Why put us through this charade? It felt almost irresponsible yesterday.
...and boy, you have to love Brooks throwing himself in the middle of this insanity. It's beyond shameless how he loves to enter himself into any controversy. If he knew the Rangers have been involved with Tampa regarding St. Louis since January 7th, why hadn't he reported it in his Sunday gossip column when he normally loves to impress us with all his "inside" information.
...the one guy who makes the most sense here is the Tampa reporter. This could be one big ruse by Sather to plant this information in an attempt to get Callahan signed at a reasonable price. Boomer is a very respected voice among Rangers fans, so why not use him as the messenger. I wouldn't put anything past the Rangers GM.
...i'm sticking to my guns and saying both Callahan and Girardi end up extended.
SOOOO !!!The saga continues...boomer is made a stooge by Sather when its
Slats who suggested and leaked the swap of capt's ...with the request of trade weeks ago by St L. it didnt take a rocket scientist to suggest & watch the fall out ...it never made sense for T B to get a rental for his caliber ...what does that say for our gull-ability or desire to max out this situation and start the run,we are close but most important ...dont mess up Girardi & Cally !!!!
1. this all must/should be done before the 1st game back (thurs ) we have had separation from them & nhl...It will get that much harder to part w/them if we see them play & we pick up wins...O M G this could be catastrophic....
I am starting to think cally: no deal is a good one for us ...for AV's identity as his team and callys 6mill/ saddle for 5-6 yrs i cant see him playing again in Blue...i injury from I R for life ...too small w/ a grinders game ...been grinded to a nub...time to re tool in some one elses shed .....LOVE ya BUT i look fwd.
to whats he gonna bring back... there's the rub ...he aint worth what we keep projecting him to be ...Buffalo can wait till summer & make him the cornerstone
If Slats gets anything he can offer to fans that wont look like a dump.....he would have done it or will do it if /when offered...
G man is a diff story...want him BUT could let him go too...
He could be next capt. or traded for yg talent (Anaheim)? sure to fetch more than cally ... right handed d man w/best yrs in? maybe 2-3 more but not at top pair ,should -will be Staal-mac if Staal ever stays healthy....would have been an olympic if not 2yrs of injury ...he's just about all the way back...
THURS .BEFORE CHICAGO HITS THE ICE ...ALL FAMILY MATTERS SHOULD BE DONE...GO RANGERS GO !!!!SEE YA @ JUNE PARTY...
This is truly starting to irritate me! If it's true that a 6 yr. 6M offer is on the table than WTF? Cally! Dude!!! We love you because you play this game with such heart and a team mentality. Please take that with you to the negotiating table. 6.75M? Really??? I hope you're next team is as good to you as the Rangers were...
This just makes me laugh........ Girardi wants 5.75 mil a yr for 6 yrs..... that's 1 mil more than McD gets. Is he out of his fucking mind.......He must be smoking crack. ....He doesn't even play up to his current contract amount.. and he wants more than the teams best defense man...
How can anyone even defend this moron...
If the lightning offers this one for one deal any gm in the nhl would do that trade in a heartbeat. St.louis is leaps and bounds better than Cally. No question about it.
Im almost getting the feeling Cally is doing this so the Rangers push him out. Maybe he really wants to play for his hometown in Buffalo. He wants to be the Superstar of the team. If Cally is the Superstar of thatteam, then that is about as equal as being the smartest kid on the short bus.Edit (in 6 minutes)
Wow.. Rangers even upped the offer to Cally to 6M for 6yrs and hes still holding out for 6.75M for 7yrs. 6M for 6yrs should be looked upon by a gift of the hockey gods to him. I wouldn't even give him that..... price needs to come down if its 6M 6yrs
Buzz is picking up for Girardi now... Ducks heavily interested and Rangers looking for Sami Vatanen as part of the return (22 year old right handed defenseman).
@TheNYRBlog I totally agree w/you on the Cally negotiations, and esp re. Brooks, whose info is always good for a laugh, seriously
Keep Cally- Keep Girardi- Richie has got to go in my opinion. What happened to all the Evander Kane rumors? I'd like to see Richards and _____________ (defensemen?) maybe a pick worked in one way or the other for Kane....
@Mike_Randazzo34 I'll apologize after the trade deadline
C'mon guys. Think about this. Does it make any sense in the world for Yzerman to send his best (current) scorer to us for Cally alone, when TB is #3 in the East? And do you think Sather will send any meaningful talent the other way? No way this is a 1-for-1. Even if Marty is irrevocably alienated from Stevie and is demanding a trade, I just can't see this going down this way. Stevie isn't stupid. Unless Glen throws in something more -- this won't happen.
This is Sather laying the groundwork for overpaying Callahan his $7mm ask. Sather can say that he could have traded Cally for MSL or other studs, there was tremendous interest in the Rangers Captain, but he opted to keep the homegrown talent. Nobody wants to pay Cally $7mm so Sather has to create the impression (via rumor mill) that Cally is a top talent and is worth $7mm despite nobody else really wanting to trade for Cally (bc he is a pure rental with ridiculous salary demand).
Cally's crazy contract demands tell me he wants free agency. Sather's offer is too generous as it is. Move him while we can!
No way . He is 38 . Cally is one of the best grinders in the game and will score 20 to 30 goals a season .
Ugh. I hope that you're wrong about them both being extended Kevin. As ranger fans we've got to expect more for what our core players and therefore our bigger cap hits will be. Cally and Girardi would be secondary players on an elite team. Maybe Girardi would have a slight edge over Cally due to the minutes he eats up. But the point is, is that we've got to expect more from whomever our core players will be. We can just be satisfied with what we are familiar with. It's time to expect more, especially before we lock up above average players for the next 5-6 years at a price that they are not worth that also impacts the yams options under the cap.
First, don't disrespect Girardi. He's given us some great years and is still considered a top defenseman. If Anahiem is willing to give up Lindholm and Silfverberg for him, then Sather should pull the trigger. With Cally, if a trade is possible for a second line winger and a 2nd round pick, it should be done in a heartbeat.
Then he would probably ask for a trade to Buffalo. I don't think he really wants to go there at this point in time
He had so much depth at his disposal. In the end St Louis got to play for Stamkos so it worked out.
@josh930 Im almost getting the feeling hes doing this so the Rangers push him out. Maybe he really wants to play for his hometown in Buffalo. He wants to be the Superstar of the team. If Cally is the Superstar of the team then that is about as equal as being the smartest kid on the short bus.
Damn they are caving. I hope Sather withdraws that offer.
Doesn't he understand that if he takes a hometown discount, that he will be giving the team a better chance of finding the players needed to build a cup calibre team and succeed? I don't get what his logic is if he is actually as committed to NYR as he says he is. Trying to wriggle more money from the team will only have negative consequences. Even from the business point of it it makes no sense. No one will pay him that much and if he asks for that much on a legit cup contending team like St Louis, (if he is traded) he will be shown the door.
if someone gave me 6 mil for a year of "work" i could retire at 46 i like him as a player but 6 is a gift
make it Silfverberg and Lindholm, no picks and I would do that trade. I would keep Girardi if it is what you say.
dude! where online do i get up to date trade info
@RangersForte who the hell would take richards?
Yes, because there's currently a high market for 33 year old centers who don't score and carry 6.6 million dollar cap hits and 2 mil in annual bonuses. Richie is getting bought out at seasons end because nobody wants him at his current price.
Stevie Y dissed St Louis. By not naming him to team Canada. ....... make sense... that he would ask for a trade
U think Torre would have left Jeter off any all star team. ... even though he was the no1 shortstop in the league?
Would have been bad feelings. .. Over that...
@rangermom i agree with you 99%. the 1% is if St. Louis wants out of Tampa. Boomer may know something about St. Louis preference.
And Boomer's saying we might get a pick with St. Louis! How the hell would that happen? I'd send one to Tampa with Callahan though if that got the deal done. It seems like Cally is getting traded, and I can't think of a guy better than Marty St. Louis that we might get back.
@DruBreezay if he is god bless him thats the first thing hes done right for this organization
Cally barely broke 38 points a season over his last 5 seasons. Points are goals + assists, food for thought. He's scored 19 goals a season in his last 5. St. Louis averages 76 points a season and gets paid 5.6 million a year. Cally scores 38 and wants more money than a 6 time league allstar, 2 time scoring leader, 1 time MVP, Stanley cup champion, and the 3rd most durable player currently in the nhl. We should PRAY Stevie Y is stupid enough to take Cally straight up for St. Louis.
And St. Louis is one of the best wingers in the league and ALREADY HAS 25 goals and has 14 more points than anyone on this team.
Side note and bringing Martin St. Louis into the conversation:
I don't know if I do that trade. Martin is such an anomoly. 38. Small. But puts up numbers. How the fuck do you assess a guy like him. I don't know.
Whatever happened to the rumored swap with that big fast kid from St. Louis? Forgot his name...
@NYrangers79 @Betweentheworldsright? that's the latest I've seen on the blog. 6 at 6M. That's sweet for a 2nd/3rd line guy - that's good till he's 35 really a great offer for an oft injured a role player who's style is hard on the body. He should be proud of being offered those type numbers as he did it all with heart and not as much with skill, which, at least from an offensive standpoint is modest. It's not just Cally but Step, now Dan G. It's a tough game and these players need to be well compensated as a pro hockey career can damage you for life but If you want to win a cup don't try to take all the available money from your team. It's not brain surgery. The team needs that to pay other high caliber players if you want to win, and what NHL player does not want to win the cup. McD and The Hobbit seemed to understand that. Why not these other guys?
@Nyrangers @RangersForte @PeteMcCormack - I'm speaking in a fantasy world- I know no one wants Richards- including us. I was hoping to bring back the Kane conversation- I know Edmonton would have no interest in Richie but they did have Kane on the block and I was hoping someone would respond with any rumors or ideas on a realistic trade that could land Kane in blue. I thought Edmonton wanted a defensemen but I don't think he's worth Girardi.....
@DruBreezay hahahaha yes that was great!!!
@IcyCup Chris Stewart. That rumor went cold.
@IcyCup His birth certificate is wrong. Hes really only 33.
@RangersForte Well, Kane plays for Winnipeg, if that changes your opinion of that they want.
What is he? A Dominican baseball pitcher prospect?
Kidding aside? Maybe my old eyes saw 38
When it actually said
