With the Rangers power play mired in a 0-for their last 14 slump, Pat Leonard at the Daily News reports that Alain Vigneault changed things up during this morning's pre-game practice as he re-inserted Ryan Callahan back on the power play.
Callahan, who was positioned in front of the net, played on a unit with Ryan McDonagh, Chris Kreider, Derek Stepan and Rick Nash.
Leonard also notes that Callahan’s agent, Steve Bartlett said he will speak with the Rangers again today about his client.
...very interesting. Or not. Vigneault really has no say in Callahan's contract negotiations, so he's making decisions based on what's best for the team tonight, not what gives the Rangers the most leverage in contract negotiations.
...having said that, as I posted this morning, if a trade of Callahan was imminent, he'd likely be a healthy scratch tonight, not being given additional responsibilities.
Cam Talbot was the first goaltender off the ice this morning, meaning he will likely get the start against Edmonton tonight.
...can you say trap game? With the Rangers flying high and a matchup against the division leading Penguins tomorrow night, it would be real easy for the Blueshirts to overlook the lowly Oilers tonight. Which would be a huge mistake, because, despite their last place standing in the Western Conference, they have a ton of young talented players who can skate and score.
...i will be real impressed if the Rangers come away with an easy victory tonight.
Here's video of Vigneault's pre-game presser...
Of courseCally's playing. Doesn't matter if they are shopping him or not. He's one of the best forwards and they need wins. Maybe if a deal was agreed upon he might sit but you never bench a top performer in fear of injury. 2 goals last game. Perfect time to re-insert him in the PP. Best at setting screens and reaking havoc in front of the net. Surprised it took AV this long
Get Stepan off the power play. He sucks. Makes too many bad passes, very rarely handles the puck cleanly and for the most part does not make good decisions with the puck when he does handle it. OH YEAH and by the way he swings and misses more than Dave Kingman.
Remember when Dustin brown was all but traded, then he caught fure, then the kings snuck into the playoffs, then they won the cup... Just saying...LGR
Another formal Reading Royal. I get to see their games periodically.... good hockey. Farm club for the Hershey Bears and the Washington Capitals.
The way I see it is if he was to get injured then perhaps Buffalo and co would think twice about offering him 7 years being it would make it his second injury halfway through a season. Then Sather's original offer doesn't look that bad. However, by showcasing him tonight if he lights it up then maybe Sather could yield a better return from a couple of breakout games.
I would doubt that any Olympians would get traded until after the Olympics. Why would a GM risk having a player get injured in games that mean nothing to their season, their team's success, or the bottom line? There might be some afterwards, but I just don't see any by Saturday.
AV might have no say but I'm pretty sure if Sather was planning to trade him, he would tell him not to place him in the one spot he could easily get injured in. I think Cally on the PP is another part of the negotiations. It looks to me as Sather is saying "Look, we'll give him PP time. I want him to stay. Can we work something out already?"
finally no more richards out for the whole 2 minutes which was getting fuckin ridiculous. been saying it all along, this is a great unit. love it.
I get the feeling that Sather will wait till after the break to decide on Cally. The Pens game should be a good measuring stick for the Rangers and where they measure up with the best teams
Not necessarily , we play tomorrow night as well . They can be putting him on the power play and giving him more ice time to show case him .
Trap nothing. They had better win the game. Except for Colorado recently, the Rangers simply are beating the teams that they should beat and still losing to teams ahead of them in the league (St. Louis). I fully expect a win tonight and a highly competitive game tomorrow. Not a win necessarily, but a game that suggests that the Rangers are up and coming. If Pittsburgh does to the Rangers what the Rangers did to Colorado, all bets are off.... again. Sorry, but if the Flyers can win in LA and San Jose, the Rangers need to continue to step it up.
...That's a weird power play unit. Does that mean Step will take over on the point? I don't feel like Kreider has been all that noticeable over the past few games so to see him still out there is interesting. Also, shit on Richie all you want (not directed at you Kev) but, at least in my eyes, he hasn't been the issue on the PP. The PP has looked good the pucks just aren't going in.
First game for me tonight at the new Garden, more importantly, it's the first Rangers game ever for my daughter. They have to win, it's not an option! Very pumped to go tonight!!
Watched BUF-PIT last night... I can't believe, hometown boy or not, Callahan would want to play for such a horrid team. Surprised Miller is still with them...
@TheNYRBlog show case cause they can't get a return for a short handed and intangeable player......
If my experience on NHL 14 last night is accurate, Taylor Hall is unstoppable if you give him an inch of open ice.
I'll be at the game tonight and was just thinking the same thing- not an easy win. AV has been so good with getting the team to take each game at a time hopefully they are looking to make it 5 straight tonight and not even thinking about the Pens. Let's Go Rangers! ! !!!
Like that PP unit... no Richards and we still keep Kreider on it with Cally. Bet they score tonight.
@gravey94 I would think that we would be more apt to get a trade done before the break because of the risk of injury during the Olympics eliminating trade value.
Players still get paid during the break...its one less check you have to issue a player that you don't see with you after the break
honestly if you watched last game... the PP would be working great and then a puck would get caught in Richards feet or he would make a bad pass and turn it over... He has definitely been one of the weaker members on the power play of late
@gravey94 Have a great timegravy, hope your daughter will enjoy the live action .
@gravey94I can't wait till I do the same.. My 2 yr old loves the Blueshirts. I still think she's too young maybe in 2 more yrs?..
@gravey94 Enjoy it man! I like the new garden. It did get quiet at times but I think its because of the team not so much the building, as it got pretty loud on a few occasions.
Enjoy, Gravey! One of the best experiences I had as a father was taking my 2 daughters (then 5 & 7) to their first Ranger game (even though it was technically a Thrashers game).
They are now diehard Blueshirt fans -the tradition continues!
If he wants the 7mil... there it is.... go get it in Buffalo. There's the $$ players and the winning players.... We will see which he is. His agent has made him look like the $$ player so far.
Here's a thought. Callahan to Edmonton for young players, prospects, draft picks. What do you think?
good point. he doesn't want ro play for buffalo. and miller will be gone after the olympics
lol because a team trading for him would really rely on 1 game as a litmus test. if a team wants him they hav made up there mind already .
@PATR2014 Can't get one for an injured player either.
This is true. Traded for Hall in one of my franchise modes. The guy is a beast.
Not sure why they even put Richards on the point...he always sends it off a defender or has the puck taken away from him.
I hope you are right!
Yes, but if you are the acquiring GM, why would you take that risk when you can just trade for him after the Olympics? Makes sense for the selling GM to trade, but not the buying, which is why I don't see it happening.
I did watch last game actually. He did make one bad pass that I remember off the top of my head but he's not the reason the PP isn't scoring. I get the switch, but I still expect to see Richie on the PP unit with Brass Pouliot Zucc and Girardi since he is leading our team in PP points. Therefore he won't be eliminated completely from the power play.
@DruBreezay@gravey94I brought my wife and 2yr old daughter at the time to a rangers/sabers game. My daughter loved it. There was a fight and she jumped up screaming! Then Boyle scored late in the third and seeing the look on her face when the Garden erupted is one of those moments that will stay with me forever. However, by the 3rd period she got a little cranky and didn't want to stay in her seat anymore so we left. My son turns 1 next month and I'm hoping to bring them both to a game next year! Have fun!
I started taking my daughter to Ranger games when she was about 6. By the time she was eight, she was roaming the promenade alone (or so she thought. I was always about 10 feet behind her). She loved it all, the game, the excitement, the crowd reactions, and has remained a hockey fan to this day, 30 years later.
