Pat Leonard at the Daily News reports that Ryan Callahan will spend some one-on-one time with his agent during the Winter Olympics in Sochi to discuss where they stand in the negotiations with the Rangers.
Leonard adds that despite the Olympic roster freeze that began yesterday at 3pm, Glen Sather is allowed to continue talking with NHL teams and player agents and even is permitted to re-sign players during that time period.
...what I've found very interesting the last few days is that more and more Rangers fans seem willing to risk losing Callahan for nothing this offseason, in return for keeping him around for a potential Stanley Cup run this Spring.
...and with Callahan's trade value not where Sather wants it, along with the captain remaining steadfast on his seven-year, $47 million demands, it might be the Ranger GM's best option.
Meanwhile, Darren Dreger at TSN says that as long as Dan Girardi isn't focused on testing the free agent market, there is a deal to be made with the Rangers.
However, he does warn that if Callahan and/or Girardi are interested in making it to the start of free agency on July 1st they both could be traded.
...i absolutely wouldn't be shocked if the Rangers and Girardi are able to agree on an extension during the Olympic break. His demands are much lower than Callahan's so you have to figure the numbers aren't that far apart between the two sides.
Finally, Leonard notes that there's a chance Anton Stralman's agent and the Rangers could begin talking contract extension during the Olympic break.
...with the way the defense has gelled since the trade for Klein, I'd definitely be open to a Stralman return. He'll obviously be looking for a raise on his current $1.7M per salary, but I'd be cool with a two-year, $2.5 million per deal.
Alain Vigneault discussed the roster decisions still hanging over the Rangers head before last night's game (via Bergen Record)...
“We’ve got certain decisions to make on people within our lineup, as everybody has been talking about,” Vigneault said. “Hopefully, once that’s cleared, we’ll have our team like everyone else and we’ll strive to make that final push.
“Glen and I discuss our team and our team dynamics on a daily basis,” Vigneault added. “This year, obviously with Hank’s situation and obviously our captain and Dan, the dynamics have been a little bit different, but hopefully everything is going to work out.”
How did Richards, Nash, and Goborik work out? Mismatching talented players does not always create good chemistry especially when Sather is the architect and letting Cally go could have a potentially damaging effect to the chemistry of this team considering he is the heart and soul. He is asking way too much and obviously if Sather could let Messier go why not Cally. At the end of the day I think a deal gets done. I just can't see Cally walking away from this team for one and 2) look at what transpired over the last year. This team rose up and ousted a coach and you can't tell me that Callahan played no part in that, being the captain of this team. So Sather obliges him and a year later is going to trade him? It doesn't make sense. Besides for Sather, what's 1 more bad contract if it keeps Cally for the remainder of his career. He already locked up Hank and despite all logical rational, he won't buy out Richards either. Dolan will never fire him, the Rangers' revenue will continue to rise and so will the salary cap until the next lockout!
Stralman has had a good year.He's dependable, I'd def resign him.Girardi I'm ambivalent -he played really well last game but if we traded him we could practically write our own ticket for a return.Too bad McIIrath isn't seasoned enough.or a deal could be done, I'm sure. Cally, well there is one question about trading him or keeping him:We will be in the playoffs-how much difference would he make?That's considering we get Chris Stewart or equal in return.Cally's a good player -a definite difference maker-that's for sure, but would trading him cost us the Cup?I wonder.
Ahhh!!! the allure of the run for the "CUP"..it makes GM's sell their souls & talent to fulfill the possibles of WINNING THE CUP!..Sather has the experience
from previous mistake filled yrs chasing and buying dreams...
Sather will not let a run for cup ruin great biz sense he has exhibited in recent yrs...getting nothing for 2 servicable -valuable assets is not an option...moves like Cally's week dangling and finding out what the market is for a rental / long term contract situation will help when break ends ...
no deals were getting done before 3pm fri...why would you trade & watch your asset go down in olympics....wait & trade when 2/25-3/5 is here...watch how if certain trades happen a domino affect can occur causing an avalanche of deals ...20 day to plot & plan a 10 day sprint to deadline ...then its lock & load were going for the cup!!!NO MATTER WHAT GET THEM SIGNED OR TRADED
BY DEADLINE OR WE LOSE !!!!
I find it very disturbing that Ranger fans are willing to lose Callahan by keeping him around for the rest of the season. Just shows their lack of business sense. Fact is Callahan will walk for nothing. He is interested in the money, first and foremost. All the talk about loyalty to the Rangers is SECONDARY after the money. Otherwise he would be signed already. Let's see what happens... to the clueless Rangers fan, let's see if Callahan stays the whole season and he resigns with New York for under $6.0 million, if there are offers from competitors more than that.... lets see....
darren dreger reports "callahan and girardi might be signed soon, or they might not. he also reports they might be traded or might not potentially."
If Sather signs one of them to a long contract while the season is still ongoing. He risks the other unsigned UFA to be bitter and may play "not to get hurt" for the offseason payday.. Its a game of chicken.
Cally is worth no more than 5.5 per. as comparable players of his style averagely get.(He may get slightly more). Buffalo is the only major obstacle for us to sign Cally that would over pay him for marketability as the hometown boy. I can't think of another team that would overpay for him unless a team knows for sure they are making it to the finals and need a player of his caliber AND is willing to give up great young assets.
So his agent is going to say die in Buffalo for 6.7 million 7 years or Rangers 5.5 million 6 years with a run at the cup. There..., Cally's choices. Now its up to him. But I will add that is agent is making him look terrible and expendable from our stand point with those #'s being thrown around. And I think that is much of the animosity toward Cally on this board which should actually be directed toward his agent and not him personally.
@TheNYRBlog Cally negotiation story is much ado about nothing and larry Brooks looking for a headline-sather trading Cally now? hahaha
I thought I heard something about Stralman wanting more than $3 million a year. I would take him at $2.5 mil but what do you do if he wants higher than that?
@TheNYRBlog good article! Thx
@TheNYRBlog NOOOOOOOOOOOO to Capt cally!!!
@TheNYRBlog Yes they can. Just a freeze not a gag order...heh.
@calithirteen nice extension of thoughts ...the success /failure of deals not complete, not fair....i feel the G M is/has taken the steps to get this team to an elite level this year .He has not made as many mistakes versus finds in the recent past We have left the foundation years and are on the edge of a great run with talent-philosophy-depth
the key to getting there is stick to your plan ,cant be sentimental and give F A's deals for past work,thats bought & paid for...MUST ...
make hard upgrades that will push over top NOT saddle team with long expensive ineffective deals that erode balance & effort
cally had nothing to do with coach fall out ,how much does heart &soul mean when your 3rd liner now and want to be paid like top talent & long term?from the teams pt his best yrs are done ,he is an injury away from being a cap burden...he is best syited to build that foundation in BUFFALO,they will pay him for that skill ,He owns that skill set of hard work -sacrifice -grit -grind.....unforunately we need more to winning the cup NOW ....
@JoeyKocur it's not really that crazy of an idea to let Cally walk at the end of the season. Sure we won't get Chris Stewart and a potential first round pick, but we'll still have Cally sticking around for a playoff run. On top of this we will save money by not taking on additional contracts for next season. We can use Cally's 6 mil on the UFA's of our choice. Our best bet here may just be to use Cally as a rental, without actually renting him. really not a bad idea so don't get your panties in a bunch and start bashing "clueless rangers fans" ;)
Stralman is a very very very underrated player.... he does not contribute many goals, but that guy can play all over the ice and has skill, great passing and knows what to do with the puck.
@DubiLeetch SOUNDS LIKE A POLITICIAN.....
ON THESE MATTERS I FEEL STRONGLY BOTH WAYS ....
thank you ...god bless america!...than you
play "not to get hurt" would diminish their values no? I would think you would want to play at your top level to attract the highest bitter after the season is over and gain leverage. Look at Steen on STL. Was going to be a UFA, having the best season of his life (bar none) and he got an extension out of it.
he signed hank though while they both had no deals
Great post Josh... couldn't have said it better
Agent works for Callahan not the other way around. Callahan dictates what his agent says to sather and what the demands are.
the rangers will give him 6. i don't see buffalo spending money on free agents, they just traded vane because he was going to cost 6-7 million but they will sign callahan for the same money? they are rebuilding, not buying 30 year old free agents. buffalo is a non issue, not even an option i don't think
You have to wonder how much of steps hold out was due to a greedy agent?!? The business side of sports sucks! Hopefully Cally will come down I would hate to loose him, but worst case consider him a rental for the rest of the season and wish him the best as he languishes in buffalo counting his millions and watching the Rangers continue to work toward a cup!
@NYrangers79 Look, we all love Cally. But to put him on the same money line as the Sedin twins, Patrick Kane, and Jonathan Toews is simply absurd. Ryan Callahan is a third line player the Rangers will survive if they lose Cally. Heart and soul and energy and leadership will not disappear when/if Cally leaves. It will just be supplied by other players. U've posted a lot on here about your concerns about losing Cally, I just want to let you know that it will be okay if we lose him, he is not a first line talent and he is demanding first line money.
I would give him 3 years at 9 million today if that settled it. He has earned it. Also try and get Staal extended. Again this is why we have to buyout Richards because Staal is going to command 4.5-5.0 a year if not more.
its a business i don't think they look at it so emotionally like us fans do.
Boy you are really clueless to think that.
Injuries are part of his game. Guys that physically put out 110% are more likely to get injured. The shelf life for a player that puts out 110% is also short. But if he changes his game, how effective is he? We need Cally at 110% for him to energize and lead this team and be worth what we paid him. Drury, Lindros, Forsberg were all 110% physical guys and eventually injuries got the best of them. I'm not saying Cally will end up the same way but he has a higher chance than Stepan or Krieder because of his style and given history. I agree we need Cally for the playoffs and leadership but the price and length need to be right....
They knew Vanek was not going to re-sign with them(Buffalo). He's not even going to re-sign with the Isles as he stated. He has his own plans on what he wants to do.
Hometown boys are a big attraction and would bring in revenue while they rebuild. You think anyone is going to go to a Buffalo game with the roster they have? You can't send out a roster like that and expect people to go pay money to see Miller stop 60 shots a game and still loose. Cally would definitely fill some seats and sell some merchandise so it may be worth it to overpay slightly while they rebuild. Its not like rookies and young players are going to be demanding high salaries. So, why not Buffalo?
Come on. Let's not kid ourselves that it's "greedy" agents that's the problem. The agents are just the messenger.
Its just a saying. I'm not doing math/physics on a Rangers blog. But please correct me if we cross paths on a math/physics blog
It is physically impossible to give more than you have. Nobody can give more than 100% of ones self.
