If you were engrossed in football yesterday, you likely missed the Rangers first scrimmage of training camp.
Luckily, MSG Network was there to cover it so I have video for you in it's entirety...
...looks like Boyle has "grabbed it" and is taking advantage of the "clean slate" mantra from AV. Not sure what's going to happen when Stepan signs, but for now he seems to be making a nice impression on the new coaching staff.
...Lindberg is really going to have to fall apart in the up-coming preseason games for him not to be a serious candidate to make the Rangers roster out of camp.
...loved watching the defensemen jump into the offense so often. Directly led to two of the five goals in the scrimmage.
...while it's likely to change once Stepan is in camp, I was a fan of the Kreider-Richards-Nash line. During the telecast, Micheletti said that Richards has had great chemistry with Zuccarello in camp. So when the Rangers finally have their full line-up a third line of Zucc-Richards-Pouliot could be solid.
...i think I might have even saw a power play goal. I'm going to have to get used to seeing those again.
Here's Alain Vigneault on Boyle (via New York Post)...
“What stands out to me is that he wants to win,” Vigneault said. “He’s been asking questions and has been very involved in all the video sessions.
“He wants to get on the same page. Whatever role is asked of him, he’s willing to do.”
Vigneault added this on Lindberg...
“You can see that he’s played with men,” Vigneault said of Lindberg, who played the last three seasons with Skelleftea of the Swedish Elite League. “Him being a centerman right now at this time, with that amount of speed and puck protection skill that he has, he’s going to get a real solid look.
“He’s impressed not only myself and the coaching staff, but he’s impressed management since Traverse City [rookie tournament],” he said. “So there’s a possible surprise that, as I mentioned, talent has no age.”

Have we talked about this on here yet?
New rule this season, no more tucking in your jersey. Brassard and Hagelin are two guys that immediately jump to mind who like to do this. Didn't watch the whole scrimmage to see if anyone was sporting the tucked in look.
With Stepan I'm wondering where there's a spot on this team for Dom Moore. AV says he's thinking of Boyle as a Center. Brassard, Richards, Boyle, Steps and possibly Lindberg certainly doesn't bode well for DM.
I hope AV was just be kind when he praised Bickel.
I'm feeling:Nash - Richards - Kreider
Hagelin - Stepan - Callahan (Kristo/Lindberg/Hrivik until this line can happen)
Zucc - Brassard - Pouliot
Boyle - Moore - Dorsett
I think that 3rd line looked pretty sharp passing to each other on the PP during scrimmage, plus that would be 3 solid lines that AV could roll.
I was also relieved to hear Joe Micheletti mention how they weren't dumping and chasing the puck...
someone posted the scrimmage in its entirety here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sn8K_iXy0gY
this was so much fun to watch! screw football. the giants look like balls. hockey is here and everything else can take a walk!
I wanted to focus on McIllrath so anytime he was on the ice I watched him. he looks a lot better than he looked with the whale last year. he looked more decisive with the puck and made some good choices! his foot work is still a little clumsy but I liked his first passes and the times where he relieved pressure by making the simple smart pass. the one thing that killed me was when he was teed up perfect for a one timer but he pooped his pants and faned on it. I know he won't make the team but if anyone goes down on our d I hope he gets the call. atleast a shot to come up.
@johnnyb3910 So eff'n stupid.
Moore can play wing too, but it's a fair question. I'd like to see Michael Haley on that 4th line on certain nights.
If Lindberg makes the opening night team, I don't expect him to play the whole season with the Rangers. Everybody's impressed with him, myself included, but there's always a period of adjustment going to the NHL and he's still a young guy. He's getting great experience right now and he should just keep getting better.
@BrendyJohnson I like these lines, though I would rather see Brass and Richie swap. Nash/Brass/Kreids looked good in the Boston series. I think Boyle will stay put at center, so I think Moore is the guy who'll end up playing wing.
I do look at this lineup and we're still not nearly as deep as some of the top teams out there. Would be nice if the NYR could get one solid power forward winger to get a little more depth.
How about D?
McD - Girardi
Staal - Moore
DelZ - Stralman
Falk the 7th?
I personally would like to see McD & Moore, and Staal & Girardi together, but don't think that'll happen.
Think Moore is out of the picture. Av likes Boyle at center, which makes his signing even more dumbfounding
@BrendyJohnson Should we call the Hags-Step-Cally line the "MIA" line?
gotta agree with most everyone else - his skating needs work before he can become a regular in the NHL. I think he plays tonight for a couple of reasons. Get him action early in preseason before he get sent to Hartford AND have him in the lineup against the hated Devils in case things get nasty. Rangers dressing a pretty physical lineup for tonight
Mcillrath looks slow, either he isn't ready yet, or his knee still isn't healthy. Think falk or Johnson will be the 7th dman
@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG I think the Rangers will give him every opportunity to be the first defenseman called up if needed.
@FREE LINDBERG Didn't see your post. GMTA.
I think moore will be in the line up. I don't see them scratching him all the time or sending him down. he will be on our forth line either at center or left wing. I think he's definatly better at faceoffs than boyle.
even though we've held pat for the most part this year. the few additions we did make sharpen our line up so much! pouliot looked very sharp yesterday and d. moore looked like he will be the center we've needed in our bottom six.
I liked the net front presence and I like dorsett driving the net. I think if boyle moore and dorsett are out 4th line than we will see much better production from our bottom six this year! dorsett is a hybrid of avery and prust! he's going to be a fan fav for sure!
watching this made me sad that they didn't do this for the traverse city tourny. the MSG crew does such a good job with their coverage and friendly banter with coming off as cheesy. this was a great idea and hope they do this in the coming years.
ya McIllrath will be on the wolfpack to start for sure. but he will be the call up if and when injuries happen.
@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG He's also a solid penalty killer, as is Boyle.
@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG Quote from AV: “Considering the players available to us, Brian is a center,” coach Alain Vigneault said. “It’s a valid question [whether he would be on the wing if Stepan were in camp], but I can’t answer that right now because he’s not here.” So clearly, as you guys are saying, AV like Boyle at center. Not sure if that means he likes him there more than Moore or not. I like them both on the 4th line. Very strong defensive zone face-off with no worries if the first guy gets thrown out. I also like both on the PK. Will be interesting!
WOW - can we get rid of Pyatt already. The only thing keeping Lindberg and Fast from dominating more in the scrimmage yesterday was the Pyatt baggage they were carrying. No room - waive him now so maybe he can catch on somewhere else
I'd rather see pyatt out. boyle needs to raise his consistency. I want boyle moore dorsett as our fourth. it's good to have 2 centers on the forth since if you look at what line has a center get tossed the most it's probably the fourth (that's complete speculation and guess that made up only to prove my point haha)
didn't see much from Pyatt yesterday. over the summer i was thinking he or Boyle might be on the chopping block. obviously Boyle made a great case for himself
Boyle was our best Faceoff guy last year. And I don't think he is playing wing on that 4th line... Dorset should be dressed every night, and av knows and likes pyatt
they were both winning faceoffs yesterday, but i agree d. moore probably sticks around, he did look good
@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG Agreed. The Rangers are going to be streaming live look-ins at game day practices this season which is pretty awesome.
they gotta let McIlrath play tonight just for the experience. his positioning was decent in the scrimmage but his skating just isn't there. Falk and Johnson both looked better.
