According to Pat Leonard at the Daily News, after leaving Derek Stepan's name on the active roster following the team's first cuts, they have now removed it in advance of their preseason trip to Western Canada leaving the team with 39 filled roster spots.
Alain Vigneault would like his opening night roster break down to be 13 forwards, 8 defensemen and 2 goalies.
...taking Stepan's name off the active roster technically doesn't mean anything because he's obviously not with the team, but at the same time it says a lot about the status of the contract negotiations. To me this is a huge statement by Sather.
...i'd understand if the Rangers did this to make room on the roster for a young guy they wanted to get more preseason action, but that's not the case. Not good.
...big difference in roster break down under AV than Torts, who, for most of his tenure, kept just six defensemen on the roster.
...if AV does go with eight defensemen, I think a dark horse to make the roster could be Allen, who I think has outplayed Falk and Johnson.
Vigneault also noted during his press conference that he's considering having Chris Kreider become an in-front-of-the-net guy, sort of like what he asked Ryan Kesler to do with the Canucks.
...nothing wrong with having a big, strong kid in front of the net. Especially if it translates into Kreider putting up Kesler-like numbers.
AV adds that while he's not plotting lines just yet, he will give Brad Richards/Rick Nash as well as Derick Brassard/Beniot Pouliot a chance together.
...AV should include Zuccarello with the Brass/Pouliot duo as the trio looked to have a ton of chemistry last night.
...got to figure Kreider will continue to be the third with Richards and Nash.
Finally, here's the goaltending schedule for the rest of the preseason games (via Bergen Record):
Lundqvist Monday vs. Flames & Thursday vs. Canucks
Biron Tuesday vs. Oilers
TBA Friday vs. Kings.in Las Vegas
...guess Talbot is just going on the trip to practice.
Here's AV's entire presser...

OK, so anyone saying Stepan hasn't proven anything yet be ause he only had a good half a season, are you also saying that Richards should not have been bought out because he had a bad half a season? Just want to clarify because obviously you can't have it both ways.
This is a business guys, no one wants Stepan here more than the fans... but it just is not in the cards right now. Stepan thinks he deserves more and Sather is playing hardball... It sucks but it is the player's right and the gm's right. I dont think you can blame either party to a certain extent (if what the numbers that are being spoken about are true). Stepan is not a greedy pig, and Sather is trying to save cap for guys like Lindberg and Fast to be able to play. I am almost positive that Stepan will be in a blueshirt at some point this year (hopefully sooner rather than later), and when it happens everyone will welcome him with open arms. Don't forget so fast that he is one of the most likeable Rangers on the ice, plays with passion, and is by far and away our most talented center. Regardless of all this BS I will be happy the day something gets done , just hope he is not too far behind the eight ball.
Who was the guy on here that said he'd bet his life that Stepan will be signed by Friday. Where will the services be?? LMAO!!
a third line with Rick Nash on it usually means good things for your team. Hopefully it does. Heres to a great season
Damn...it's great to finally hear a Ranger coach stressing that a big body should get in front of the opposing team's net! Seems Tort's was only interested in telling our guys to get in front of our own net. Kreider, Boyle AND Nash should all be driving toward the net. Yes, Nash offers a helluva lot more, but at his size there is no way he should just be a perimeter player. Been saying it since he got here. Toughen up cream puff!
This could turn out to be a good year! Let's go Rangers!!!
How long can the Stephan ting drag out? Seriously. What's next? Not interested in predictions etc. Could a thing like this HYPOTHETICALLY last a season?
i like the sound of kreider-richards-nash and Zucc-Brassard-Pouliot...eventually have step cally and hags....4th line of boyle Moore and dorsett...those would be my 4 lines based once contract/injuries are resolved...in the mean time step with lindberg and fast/kristo doesnt sound too bad either.....i think stepan will come to his senses sooner rather than later
MZA will look good in the pre-season, serviceable in the regular season and then will be completely irrelevant (again) in the playoffs. The only reason I see keeping him around is for shootouts
Good move putting Krieds in front of the net. Big strong kid with the leg strength to jump out of pools. Perfect. Kid's gonna have to get tougher though but if that pretty deflection off a Nash pass driving to the net is any indication (Boston series), he'll do just fine there. Step = bummer. should be better news on this come around Fri.
Has anyone noticed that no one has made an offer sheet? So he needs the Rangers more than they need him. Lindberg is gonna get a bigger look now.
Step has stepped on his proverbial junk and in his world for what a couple hundred grand when if he had bitten the bullet would equal a couple if extra million... Loosing sight of what's important and battling over money instead of accepting a a lot more money than any of us are likely to ever make and for a guy in his early 20's is selfish and petty. With the cap issues and slats stance he has to know its not going to happen and the longer he holds out the less likely he or the Rangers are to do well this season all over a couple of hundred thousand where if he had signed and played well we'd be talking millions. I don't completely agree with slats stance, but the bottom line he can hold his line and the biggest looser will be Step. Truly disappointed in Step - I understand he wants the best contract he can get and player careers are short etc, but it's now self centered and petty. I stood by him when others wanted to trade him for Oreilly last year but as admirable a player as he had been I can't support his petty stance any longer! Man up and play or I hope slats trades you!
Also does AV have his shirt on backwards during the press conference? Is that a tag by his neckline?
@TheNYRBlog will be interesting to see what happens to wingers once hags and cally are healthy.
For the forwards loved the line last night, but have to remember last year the only positive play that we saw out of Richards was when he played with Zucc, so I would keep that open too. I would slot Richards/Zucc, Brassard/Pouliot and Nash/Stepan (when healthy). Can use Kreider with Nash, then kids with the other two until Cally and Hagelin get back.
Stepan made his choice not to sign. Hes expecting more money than he's worth. Take the bridge deal you little cry baby and prove yourself the next two years. I'm tired of these players demanding big money at a young age. Grow up Step.
In regards to Allen, remember when Bickel kept sticking around during camp two years ago and no one knew how? Think we're seeing that again....
@IcyCup Last year Subban missed what 8 regular season games i believe before agreeing on a contract
when everyone heals, still gonna have lindberg, fast, kristo, miller, pyatt, asham, powe....lots of decisions to be made...need to trade some of the older guys to gain some cap space
@AnnoyingJoe If by completely irrelevant in the playoffs, you mean 2nd on the team in points, then I'm going to have to disagree there. When MZA was actually given a fair shake, like 2010-11 when he was called up and stayed, he actually had more pts/game than 3/4 of the team. He was called up again in 12-13, and sparked the team and PP only to go out breaking his wrist blocking a shot.
I'm sick of people talking down about this guy like he does absolutely nothing when he's one of the best 3rd line players in the league and a complete steal for 1.15mil/year. This is also the same guy who took a pay cut to stay with the team and not strap them financially.
Zuccarello. A real piece of shit, right?
U clearly did not see the playoffs last year by the zucc comment u just made . Did u miss him breaking holtby's ankles in game 7?
@AnnoyingJoe Thumbs down.
@AnnoyingJoe He had the most tape to tape passes to team mates in front of the net/slot of any Ranger in the Boston series, though we tend to forget that when they go unconverted. He was also one of the more visible Rangers and one of their better players last playoffs. I think he will surprise you this year.
@Betweentheworlds It's the only role that will work for Kreider. Hasn't shown he's comfortable carry the puck and hasn't shown much vision either. If's he's going to score goals, it's going to have to be the dirty kind or using his shot off the rush. Question is: Does he have the hands to be good at the deflection game? It's a high-level skill those deflections. Good idea on AV's part though.
@teena_797 @TheNYRBlog Also Sather does not like Hold-Outs. Ask Dubi? Sather is known to hold grudges with players but at the sametime he loves reclamation projects. I think AV knows how to handle the situation as he is doing. Play the hand given and focus on molding a winner. AV has been given a lot to work with and Steps should fire his agent after this fiasco. Marty the Debbies goalie did this approach and will retire his whole career as a Debbies SweetCake Goalie. Remember what Steps said after the end of last season upon exit interview " I want to spend my whole career as a New York Ranger. That traveled to Sather's ears and Sather gladly agreed: "2 Year Bridge Then Big Baller Money"
@teena_797 I'm still confident something gets done before the season.
@Brandon Boyle Agreement by all owners to not make offer sheets........keeping the highly inspiring Richards for another year.......available Ranger "cap" space.....equals all the leverage Sather needs for Stepan.
@JMK8363 I couldn't agree more, the only thing I might say in his defense is that there is a lot of pressure from the league and other players to get your market value, otherwise it devalues the other players when it's their turn to negotiate. That said he has put in his strides and no one would fault him now for going low, and like you said most aren't going to see that kind of cash in 10 years. I really like the bridge deal and a low ball contract for a guy his age who is just starting to come into his potential. Keeps him hungry. If anyone is losing out it is Slats as he will need to pay him a lot more to keep him in a couple years, then if he had locked him in now; but he kept Richey, who even at his prime is not worth the money of that ridiculous contract and now the team is strapped.
@JMK8363 I'm in same boat and agree 100%. Slats isn't right but the one who looks bad in all of this is Step. I really thought he was smarter than this. Beginning to wonder if I gave him too much credit.
@VinnieR LOL! Nice catch.
@dantelives13 If the kids step up it'll be a good problem to have.
@Brandon BoyleHAHA Stepan blocked me on twitter. I sent him this message last week.
@lennynyr 11 Sep
@DerekStepan21 y r u holding out forcing Sather 2 dump players to meet ur demands. Shame on u. Fire ur agent. Cash in later. Hurting ur team
I was going to send him the following message today..
GO FUCK YOURSELF DEREK STEPAN,YOU DONT WANT TO BE HERE,TAKE A FUCKING WALK.
@Brandon Boyle I agree but you wouldn't do the same thing if you were in that situation and seeing other players, same age with comparable if not worse stats getting 1-2 million more dollars per season than what you're being offered?
@Melissa (blknblueshirts) Don't think its the same. While Bickel could be a filler... Allen actually looks like he could be a useful 5th defensman if there were injuries. Think he makes the roster as the 7th dman, and he has been a pleasant surprise so far.
@Van_Ness_WVU I'd like to see Healy in place of Boyle.
I think your comment about his playoff stats is a bit disingenuous; Was he second on the team in pts because he was so good, or because, offensively, everyone else on the team sucked so bad. The only facet to this guys game is offense and he had one goal in 12 games.
@Lordstanleybroadway obviously I did not watch any playoff hockey and am flying off of the handle with ad hominem arguments. how else could I form an opinion that differs from yours? thank you.
@TheNYRBlog for sure, team could use some forward depth, hopefully that develops with AV playing 4 lines more regularly
@FREE LINDBERG That's how I meant it. During his rookie year, Bickel was almost the seventh defenseman....they liked what they saw from him. I think Allen gets that chance this year. Not saying he becomes type of player Bickel became, just that he gets noticed the same way.
