During a segment between periods last night, Glen Sather discussed the tumultuous contract negotiations with Derek Stepan...
“I don’t think Derek is going to let this thing linger that long. I don’t think he is a big enough fool to think that he will sit out the year and it will do any good.”
Sather added that it's unfortunate that Stepan has listened to his agent Matt Oates.
...similar to what happens with budget negotiations in Congress, this will likely get done in the final hours before the start of the regular season. So I'm not at all concerned Stepan is going to sit out the entire year. My worry is how far behind he's getting by continuing this holdout. And after seeing the Rangers effort and lack of scoring last night, his return could be used right about now. I know Blueshirt fans have been drooling over Lindberg, but if you think the Swedish rookie would be able to replace Stepan's expected production this season I've got a bridge to sell you.
...in the end I think Stepan caves, because missing the entire year will likely do great harm to his reputation as well as diminish his skills. And I really believe that Sather isn't moving from his position. He's more than willing to let this play out as long as it takes. You can be sure that Sather has developed quite a poker face over the years and he's not going to flinch, especially when he knows he has the best hand.
...having said that, I think the team's lack of consistant offense this preseason proves that Stepan is sorely needed.
Yea, trashing the agent is always a good ploy. Sather is being kinda stupid here doing this through the media. He has ALL the leverage, so shut the hell up and wait for Stepan, and more so his agent, to realize that if they don't sign neither will get paid and when they do sign it will likely be for less than what's being offered now. The only tool they have is to hold out. Given the lack of production at the Center position thus far, the scenario playing out is the best the Stepan camp could have hoped for, but I still don't think it makes Sather budge.
All the talk about trading him is ludicrous. Brassard has proven NOTHING. He played well for 20 games in the spring and 1 pre-season game. Lindberg, while promising, has also proven ZIP. He doesn't even have 1 NHL minute under his belt and he's being anointed as a can't miss? Richards...well, I personally think he'll have a good year but I get the distinct impression that not many here share that feeling ;-) Point is, this team NEEDS Derek Stepan, particularly since his absence means they are missing 1/2 of their top 6 forwards. Don't think many teams win too many games missing 3 of their top 6.
Reminds me a lot of the Victor Cruz situation with the Giants. When is Dolan going to come out and say their offer will make Stepan a very wealthy young man? lol. Step has no leverage at this point with no one tendering an offer sheet. His choices are limited and as Claudine said, he's losing on both ends.
I have high hopes for Lindberg as a two-way center, but he has shown nothing compared to what Step showed right out of the gates in his first training camp. You could see that Step had huge play-making potential in his first pre-season. If Lindberg becomes as good a player at any point in his career as Step is right now, I'll eat my shirt.
Either way, Stepan loses. He's not getting the $$ he wants AND he's losing valuable ice time & conditioning in pre-season. Shut up, sign the deal & get yer arse on the ice!!! This is getting old & I believe will make management (and potentially other teams) less willing to negotiate with Stepan in the long run.
I just posted almost the exact same thing. It's sad when we are all agreeing with Sather. What I found ironic was the next segment discussed Richards and how he was behind the entire year from missing the preseason. Don't think it was coincidental the way MSG cut the interview.
The other part I'm surprised hasn't come into this is the Olympics - I think each day he sits out, his chances of making the team go down. Yes, he should be on the team. But the US has plenty of options similar to him. You would think that would be motivation enough to shut up and just sign the deal he's being given.
I have to agree with Stepan here... With all the injuries in sports now a days, I feel younger players should try and make as much as they possibly can...
@FREE LINDBERG You're 100% correct, but I've seen too many Rangers fans saying the Blueshirts should trade Stepan because they have Lindberg. Not smart.
Why trade one of the three young centers that we have. They are all studs!!! What is wrong with having depth down the middle. Only one that needs to go is Richards. We have centers for years to come
What about Richards? He needs to go after this season. We dot have room for him. That he's not playing well just makes it more obvious
