Last season was obviously a nightmare for Brad Richards. Culminating with his benching in the playoffs against the Bruins.
Despite his lackluster year, the Rangers decided to not amnesty him during the offseason and from the reports I've seen all summer he's determined to prove his detractors wrong.
From his intense workouts with Martin St. Louis to showing up early for informal practices, Richards is doing it the right way. And it sounds like his new coach is noticing (via Blueshirts United)...
"I told Brad to turn the page and not to talk about what happened in the past," explained Alain Vigneault. "It's behind you, and I wasn't here so I don't care. Every time I see him he seems real positive, real upbeat. This is a new season and I'm sure he will put his best foot forward."
...some guys can lose confidence and never regain their form once things start heading downhill, but Richards has taken it as a challenge and it looks like he's up to it. Hopefully for the Rangers and their fans all his extra work will pay off with a comeback season.
Vigeault also spoke about the opportunity young players will have in camp...
"Talent has no age. When a player is ready to play and ready to contribute and ready to help the New York Rangers win, he's going to play on our team and he's going to get the ice time he deserves to get."
...in related news, Lindberg, Kristo and Fast are extremely psyched right now.
...listen, Torts did a lot of things wrong as the head coach of the Rangers, but you can't deny how he changed the culture of the organization allowing young players such as Stepan, McD, Del Zotto, Hagelin and others cut their teeth at the NHL level. So it's very reassuring to hear AV state that he'll continue with that mindset.
...and with the Rangers lack of super star scorers (other than Nash) along with the Callahan and Hagelin injuries, if those rookies are lucky enough to make the Rangers they will be counted on to contribute on the scoreboard every night.
Here's video of AV's entire press conference yesterday...

Jim Cerny at Blueshirts United gives us the training camp schedule...
"Thursday will be about on-ice conditioning, Friday will be the first drills, and then by Saturday he and his staff will begin instilling the systems he wants the team to play under this season. After the Rangers play pre-season games against the Devils and Flyers next Monday and Tuesday respectively, Vigneault said that the coaches will begin working with the players on special teams play and systems."
...cannot believe that the first preseason game is Monday. It feels like only yesterday that the Rangers couldn't buy a goal during their series with Bruins and were eliminat....Clean slate Kevin, clean slate.
Good luck to the blue boys this year. I love them. I'm all for a clean slate. Talking about a clean slate, can we please stop the Torts bashing and move on. He did many good things for the team. Same thing for the Vancouver people bashing A.V. -- stop it. These guys are good coaches. Get some perspective.
Finally broke down and ordered cable. Can't wait to watch on the big screen again. I'm all set up and planning to watch MSG for some 5 hours Monday evening -- Rangers-devs, Ranger No. 11, Rangers in the 70's & Retro Broadcast.
Who will be on the ice?.....
I think Richie will bounce back. His cap hit is still terrible though (doesn't give the NYR much flexibility).
My money is on Kristo making the club. He seems the most ready/mature for the NHL game. He might be bumped up and down throughout the year though. I see JT starting with the team, due to injuries, but I think he'll end up back in AHL; as evident from last year, his game needs more refining.
Finally, even though I thought they were probably useful, you think the guys are rejoicing that they don't have to do Tort's bag skates?
Sounds like this guy's definitely got a different prawcess, especially for the yoots. On paper, I could see maybe Kristo cracking the opening day roster because he's a bit more mature and has 4 years of the college game under his belt, but he also carries a $1.3M cap hit. I would imagine the rangers would ideally want want Lindberg and Fast to start with the Whale so they can make sure they adapt to the pro game, but their cap hits are both under $1M so that might actually be in their favor. If I had to guess, given there's likely 1 permanent and 2 placeholder spots open (assuming Stepan signs) while Cally and Hags are out, I would say Miller (if healthy), Kristo, or Powe would get the permanent spot and the 2 temps would be between Haley, Mashinter, and Lindberg. My darkhorse to make it out of the gate is Hrivik, but I really think they want these kids with no experience to play and not be watching from the press box.
Impressed already with AV, looks like a class act. Excited to see what he can do with our team. So pumped for Monday!!!!!!!!! Richie better come out guns blazin'! LGR!
Said it before. I am all on the Richards band wagon, until he screws up. Same for DZ even though that one is much harder to forgive.
As a pro making the kind of money he is, he absolutely should be using it as a motivator. Otherwise he should just retire. He's not exactly over the hill and has plenty of good hockey left in him. Let's hope that the NYR get to benefit from it.
I am beyond excited!!! I love the start of a new season! hopes and expectations are renewed and all is right in the world! get step signed today and don't delay his progress and I'll be a happy camper!
Ridiculous Hodgson 6 yr $25.5 million deal could be a coffin nail to any Stepan deal. The GMs in Buffalo and Carolina continue to give insane contracts.
Clean slate ...
Richards is a pro. There was something not right w him last season. I bet it was off ice stuff. He is human. It was probably a woman messing w his head. 25-30 goals this year 40 assists. Go get 'em brad. LETS GO RANGERS!!
No MSG is the worst thing about Miami. Can't watch until October 3rd. You guys have to let me know about Oscar and Kreider
@AG_Blue LOL! Is this going to be the team's theme song this year?
@Joe Mercer Didn't he basically admit he was not ready to start the season, didn't train enough before the season began. Sorta makes sense cause he looked slow & gassed a lot of nights.
I gotta think there are worse things about Miami, hahaha
but you know we'll all be talking about how the games look and those guys not least of all
