With Henrik Lundqvist stating that he doesn't want contract extension negotiations to become a distraction during the season, this week might be the last chance for a deal to get done before next offseason.
Which is why Lundqvist says there will be discussions this week (via Newsday)...
“I don’t have anything for you,” Lundqvist said with a smile. “We still have a few days. You can get back to me. We’ll be talking before we leave for Phoenix (on Wednesday).”
...now that Stepan is signed, the Rangers focus all this week should be on extending Lundqvist. Because if this drags on through the season and the Rangers struggle, it'll become that much less likely "The King" will want to return to his throne on Broadway next season.
...having said that, Sather needs to be smart and not just open the vault for the All World goaltender. I've seen rumors stating that Lundqvist is going to end up making between $8.5 and $9 million, which is insane even for him. The Rangers GM did a masterful job re-signing all his RFAs, not let's see what he can do with his first UFA.
seems like it is distracting him by the way he was playing in the preseason games.. He just seems really off...
Hank looked more Swiss than Swedish this pre-season: Swiss cheese! Does that help Glen's bargaining position? "Hank, you're not getting any younger ..."
I'm sure Hank understands the situation with the other players and all that. I'm sure he wants to stay in New York too. They just have to see if they can arrive at the best scenario for all parties. For that reason, and considering the people involved, it would seem doubtful that this gets done in the next week.
If the Rangers sign Hank, and want to keep Cally, Brassard, Girardi and or their other UFA's.... there is only one possible way. Buyout Richards... they better put him in the press box before he gets injured or we are screwed.
I gotta believe Richards gets amnestied next summer. I've been counting on it. But, again, the brass doesn't read the blog for some reason.
