After last night's 4-1 loss to the lowly Flames, Alain Vigneault spoke with Steve Zipay at Newsday about the Rangers play on defense...
"We've got certain reads to make; I don't want to say our guys are fighting it, but it's not coming instinctively. And our execution -- we turned that puck over so many times in the first period -- here were real good players turning the puck over."
Vigneault added that the long layoff between games was the likely reason for the team's rust.
...the last thing I'm about to do three games into the preseason is panic, especially when Callahan, Stepan and Hagelin have yet to step on the ice in a game, but this team has looked lethargic in two of the three preseason games. Especially the Kreider-Richards-Nash line. I need to see much more from them. I'm still waiting to see the new and improved Richards I keep hearing about.
...as far as the defense goes, I guess the team is going to "fight it" when instead of McDonagh-Girardi in the line-up the Rangers have Bickel-Falk.
Here's AV's entire post game presser last night...
To watch at Blueshirts United, watch here.
It is still early, but I am already very nervous. I was nervous after the end of last year. This is a huge year for the Rangers with the Hank negotiations. I am worried that if we are not a serious contender that those negotiations will take a turn for the worse. As for Nash, he has to step it up. He should once the season starts, but he is a huge contract for this team.
hes not needed. hes a waste of a roster spot. You wouldnt rather they pull someone up from wolfpack?
yo guy who runs this blog, if u think that bickel does anything good for the team you have no idea what hockey is. He sucks. period.
Kevin.... When does it become realistic to put Richards in the press box for not performing (to avoid injury for the buyout) especially now with AV having confidence in Lindberg for that 3rd line center role. A month in? Two? I mean he keeps playing like This he has no place on this team.
Vig is still evaluating. Who will be the 7th and 8th defenseman? Kids look good but both Nash and Richards underwhelming so far..but it's early.
I think with Moore and the kids the team looks much faster and Staal, Straman and even Asham looked comfortable with the pace. MDZ, Boyle, Pyatt, Richards questionable.
@TheNYRBlog This years team under our new coach really isnt impressing me. We need more punch offensivly. To loose to the flames is a joke!
@TheNYRBlog nightmare on 34th street ?
@JustinRP37 I like what I saw from the guys that we should be seeing again tonight. I will withhold judgement until I see a group that is closer to the starting lineup.
@FREE LINDBERG Doubt management will allow that unless they determine they won't make the playoffs because it will be admitting that not buying out Richards was a huge mistake. Perhaps they can trade him to a team that still has a buyout left and is dumb enough to risk injury for use in the playoffs.
I know its early but agree with others who are not thrilled with what we are seeing so far from Richards. He has no chemistry with Nash so end that experiment please.
@lennynyr Probably Falk and Johnson get 7th and 8th spots. Although Allen is making a strong push. Might be better to get him ice time down in Hartford than sitting in the press box every night.
@DaveFL Asham actually did look good last night. Still don't think it's enough for him to make the team.
@greggray24 That is true. Once our roster looks more like the regular season we will see how everything comes together. I will definitely want to see how the first few weeks of the regular season play out.
Hey every one wants more offense. More offense and to heck with defense. Well when you don't play defense and go down 2 quick you lose. Defense wins championships. Offensive teams lose big games 4-1. That's preseason but it's a preview into the season.
