The New York Rangers (1-3-0) lost to the Edmonton Oilers (4-2-1) by the score of 5-3, tonight. For a box score, go to Yahoo! Sports.
...while I thought the effort was much better than last night in Calgary, losing to the Flames and Oilers by a combined score of 9-4 is never is good thing even in the preseason. Lots of holes on defense as the forwards seem to be losing their man time and again and way too many odd man rushes.
...on the positive side, you can tell these guys are starting to get comfortable with AV's offensive system as all the defensemen were active in the Oilers end, while there was more traffic in front of the net tonight than all of last year combined.
...if this is how Staal plays with a tinted visor, the entire team should be wearing them. This is easily the most aggressive I've seen him on offense in his career.
...and Miller is officially in the mix for a roster spot.
...especially after a bit of a hiccup from the Hrivik-Linberg-Kristo line, who ended up pointless and a combined -7.
...oh those pesky 5-on-3 power plays. One of these days the Rangers will take advantage of them.
...after these last two games, no one can tell me Allen shouldn't be ahead of both Falk and Johnson for the 7th or 8th defensive spot. Having said that, it might be better for his development to get ice time in Hartford rather than sitting in the press box every night in the NHL.
...while he had flashes, I'm still not seeing enough offensive creativity from Kreider. Starting to get a bit worried the Rangers won't be able to count on him for consistent offense.
...Zuccarello continues to be the Rangers only real play maker so far this preseason.
...combined TWO blocked shots for Girardi and McDonagh. WOW!!!!!
...loved Pouliot's willingness to get his big body in front of the net. Guy pretty much set up office there all night.
...another tough, aggressive game for Haley who could be in the mix with Mashinter for the 13th forward spot.
...big fan of Dom Moore wearing the "A" on his chest tonight.
...with so many key players out for the Rangers, it's really hard to get a good read on this team right now. Overall, I haven't been impressed with what I've seen so far this preseason, but with a new coach and a new system it's going to take awhile. Wouldn't be shocked to see the Blueshirts struggle out of the gate, but if they can somehow get to the home opener on October 28th at .500, I'd feel real good about this team going forward.
...Rangers have off tomorrow, then a reunion with Torts on Thursday in Vancouver.

Here's video of goals by Staal and Miller...
@TheNYRBlog to say the least, the defensive unit on the ice for their second goal made me want to throw a chair at the tv
Glad to see a healthy Miller. If he keeps playing like this for the remaining pre season games, he'll be in the starting lineup. So it's a battle between Hirvik, Kreider, Miller, Kristo, Lindberg, Mishinter, Healy and Fast to start the season with the Rangers. Pyatt and Powe should be dropped. Only Piluot, Brassard, Zucc, Richards, Nash, Moore, Dorsett, Boyle assured of spots right now. Asham on the bubble, so there's three or four spots up for grabs. Mashinter or Healy should battle for 13th spot if Boyle centers 3rd line, If not, Miller and Lindberg battle for 3rd line center. If Vig gives it to Boyle, that means both Mishinter and Healy will probably be on the opening day roster. Miller, Kreider, Hrivic for the two left wing spots open while Kristo and Fast will battle foe the open right wing spot. Lots of options for Vig.
Kreider should be on a line with Miller for sure. Those 2 have chemistry. Biron looked terrible. Time for Talbot to get a shot. Kreids definitely has not looked great this preseason, but I think playing under a coach who actually works with young talent instead of benching them or telling the media they "stink" this kid will increase his hockey IQ and have a good year. He's got the raw talent he just needs some guidance.
Assuming that the Richards-Nash combo is a bust then who does Nash play with? The only one on the roster that he has shown chemistry with is Brassard but I hate to break up the only line that seems to be working in pre-season. Really need Stepan back!
We have the best blue line in game best Goalkeeper and 6 great forwards .I have already seen enough of Richards sell him for a bag of jelly beans and move on to sign the Kid it would leave us plenty of space also to sign our top 6 UFA next year and give poiliout and JT and fast to play this year
@TheNYRBlog 100% agree with your point on Kreider.
I think well be fine, hes rolling 4 lines, and letting everyone play, yea we all want to win and im sure AV does too...but i believe hes smart to give everyone a change not worry about winning to be able to choose the best roster for opening night
It'd be nice to see Conor Allen on our roster as a 7th defenseman. There's one slight issue though. He would be making $1.7 while being a 7th/8th defenseman. With how close we are to the cap right now, I don't think it's realistic to expect him on the opening night roster.
Johnson and Falk are rough...I agree that Allen at this point is much better either of them. the thing that really worries me is hags step and cally are all projected to be a line if and when they all get back. don't be shocked to see part or all of that line look like garbage for periods of this season. I hope step is working out like crazy. I'm getting very worried about what's projected to be our first/second line.
At this point in pre-season, with the majority of guys only playing in their second game, you really have to look past the final score. Edmonton had at least 3 goals last night (the two deflections and the shorty) that were mostly puck-luck. At this point youre really just seperating the men from the boys, who's ready for the NHL and who's not. There are clearly some holes in the Rangers schemes, both offensively and defensively that will just require time to shore up. But you look at the most glaring one, which i would say leaving guys open in the slot, and then you look at the forwards on the ice (kristo, lindberg, hrivik) and its not surprising that the score went the way it did.
Also agree...I think Allen gets the 7th spot. I think Kreider will turn into a bust. It's like a flashback to an AHL game I saw where he took 3 or 4 stupid penalties.
How about Zuccarello-Brassard-Pouliot on ice for 2 more goals tonight? That will be a dangerous 3rd line.
@Eric_Only Hate to say it but there might be a reason he only has two career regular season goals.
@PacNYR44 Agreed. Also keep in mind that the two teams we played had there rosters down to just a few extra players while the rangers are still carrying almost two full squads. Would anticipate the last two pre-season games to be much closer to our starting line up. That said, we are still missing what could be argued as our top line (or 2nd at worst) in Cally, Hags, and Stephan so look for at least one rookie line to be out there.
@JoshKaye Good point.
@NH_NYR_88 They'll probably be back by November the latest.
@FREE LINDBERG Really wish Sather had just kept his mouth shut during the interview on MSG. Rather than try to drive a wedge between a player and his agent he should have just said that he made a good offer and the ball is in their court. Understand he is frustrated and he is worried that he will take the heat for it but all he can do is hurt negotiations with his comments. Stepan should take the money on the table and be underpaid fan favorite now and plan to be overpaid guy resented by the fans down the road. He is in danger of being resented by the fans way too early in his career. That seems to be the way the system works these days.
@BrendyJohnson Right about now, I'd trade MDZ, give Allen the 6th dman spot and carry Falk and Johnson as 7th or 8th dman. If not, Allen should go to Hartford and play. No reason whatsoever to have him sitting in a booth.
@BrendyJohnson no reason to give Allen the 7th spot. He's better than that, and should continue to develop in Hartford.
@BrendyJohnson Unfortunately right now its our first line...
@TheNYRBlog @Eric_Only It's really puzzling how a guy with his size and skating ability and a hard accurate shot can't play smart. He never seems to be on the puck like Miller is. He may be sent down. Maybe Vig will give him another chance in Vancouver. Would love to see him have a great game against his former coach.
@TheNYRBlog @Eric_Only Not to pile on but he just does not seem to have good hands or much hockey sense. Seems like he is always trying to figure out what he is supposed to be doing rather than just playing and when he is in the right place he can't hold on to the puck. I like the way he was hitting in his first pre-season game but he has not really impressed this pre-season if you forget what he has done for us in the past. I would not think his roster spot is guaranteed. Miller on the other hand is making a very good case for being in there on opening night.
@greggray24 @PacNYR44 yea hoping cally and hags get healthy soon i love watching them two play. And step better get signed already... is fighting over an extra million over 2 years really worth sitting out this long and risking your season that is the most important to you ultimately signing a bigger and longer contract in the NEAR future...i just dont get it
