The New York Rangers (1-5-0) lost to the Los Angeles King (3-2-1) by the score of 4-1, tonight. For a box score, click here.
...hopefully, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas as the Rangers mercifully end a brutal preseason. No offense (9g in 6 games), missed assignments on the defense (22 goals against in 6 games), can't score on the power play (2-for-22) or stop anyone on the pk (5 power play goals against the last three games). But it's the preseason so there's nothing to worry about. Right?
...is it me or is Nash trying to do too much with the puck? Probably why he went pointless this preseason. Grip it and rip it my friend.
...speaking of pointless this preseason, I'm already anticipating Richards getting a permanent seat in the press box by November so he doesn't become ineligible to be bought out next summer if he gets injured playing in a game he likely isn't contributing in.
...i'm pretty sure Miller's name is currently being etched above a looker room stall at MSG after another solid game.
...conversley, another uneven performance from Kreider. He'd make a couple of great plays with his speed and then disappear. Having said that the one drive he made to the net showed why he needs to be on the opening night roster. Just has to be more consistent.
...as far as the other young guys (Lindberg, Fast & Hrivik), they all had their moments but I didn't think any of them distanced themselves from the pack. All three are most likely Hartford bound.
...don't kill me, but I think Bickel might have earned a spot on the team with his performance tonight whether AV takes seven or eight defensemen. No, seriously.
...it took Lundqvist 10 periods, but I think he finally found his game in the second period tonight.
...Brandon Mashinter. You took a stupid double minor and were on the ice for a goal against tonight. What's his prize Johnny? It's a Hartford Wolf Pack jersey.
...while none of them had a chance of hitting the back of the net, it was nice to see Del Zotto actually getting his shot on goal.
...really noticed Pouliot's chemistry with Nash tonight. Hopefully AV did as well.
...sort of a weird preseason with all the travel, back-to-back games and basically split squad line-ups. Seemed like AV was more worried about evaluation than preparation. Which is why I fully anticipate a great week of practice and I'm completely confident we will see a much better team come Thursday night.
Here's the Rangers one and only goal tonight courtesy of JT Miller...
When the kids, JT Miller, Hirvik and Fast, played together, they looked awesome and created all kinds of havoc with the Kings in their own end. The speed was terrific and intensity catchy. I would love to see us play the kids on a 3rd or 4th line. Pick the rest of the team leaving them alone. Just a thought...love playing the kids!!!
Pouliot's one of those players that just plays well with everybody it seems, in addition to Zuccarello and Hagelin those are very important players to have. Hope AV puts together Hagelin-Stepan-Nash ASAP and watch the hopeful magic.
Hank better stop worrying about what clothes he wears, photo shoots and GQ mags.....Otherwise he will be exposed as swiss cheese!
Richards is def done,,, guy is petrified of getting hit post concussion.. This team isn't good enough to keep these veterans cause of $$$
The final roster will probably be mostly predictable. All of the kids are going to be cut. The only big question is the 12th forward. Asham has a real shot a being the 13th, but what will they do with guys like Boyle, Pyatt, Powe, and Dorsett?
Poor Kevin, staying up to watch a miserable game, and then finding the strength to write about it, late into the morning.
@TheNYRBlog good write up, but I disagree w you on Kreider. I think he needs to show something in Hartford before he gets plays again w NYR
4th game in 5 nights, 1/2 an NHL roster vs. a 95% NHL roster, I'm impressed the final score was only 4-1 considering it was 3-1 after 1. No panic here, but a little confusion as to why they didn't play at least 1 game with a full team. I think Kreider, Miller, Asham, and Falk have made it. Besides Allen, I don't think anyone else has outplayed those 4. Big letdown for the bubble kids. They showed glimpses but bit sustained hunger. The next 6 days will go very slowly!
Miller has been playing himself onto the roster.We didn't see his problem last year at all-no turnover machine-he seems to have solved that, which is great and necessary.
From what i have seen, and i'm being optimistic, I see them struguling in the beginning of the season. They will break through and go on a tear once they get it together.
@TheNYRBlog Thank you for defending Stu! It's an unpopular position, but the kid has the attitude and work ethic. He's true blue.
@TheNYRBlog In the 1st period tonight especially, they hardly won any battles to the puck. That worries more than anything.
These preseason games have been a disaster, hopefully October 3rd will be the start of something good.
@TheNYRBlog Wait...I wasn't only one to say Bickel might've earned spot with his performance tonight? Woohoo I'm not crazy!!! (I agree btw)
@TheNYRBlog no line combos had time to mesh. Just a bunch of experimenting of the lines. Hopefully it was just that and not that we suck lol
@TheNYRBlog '11-'12 pre-season sucked this bad too didn't it? And they went to the conference finals. I'm on edge, but not worried.....yet..
@TheNYRBlog Keep saying that bud!
I agree with most of what you said, but I thought Fast was clearly better than Hrivik or Lindberg. I could see him making the team over Kreider. Not saying he will, but I wouldn't be shocked. He was responsible defensively and made some good plays in the offensive zone. Kreider was up and down as he's been all preseason.
Hank played a very solid third period... If we have the real Hank in net, doesn't matter how poorly the team is in front of him... we will be in every game. Already pumped for Thursday... LGR
@TheJamesLeBlanc I wouldn't be shocked if it happened.
next 6 days are slow for us, but we better count on these guys learning how to play hockey during that time. sounds like Hank started to find his game after i hit the sack, but they still have to figure out defensive roles, pp and pk. it should be doable, but we wanna see it.
@ivanricov Completely agree.
@PlannedDilemmas @TheNYRBlog and he's one of the few guys that will fight.
@BlkNBlueShirts Great minds.
@RTeggs @TheNYRBlog is torts still coaching?
@holyheadshot They definitely weren't good but at least they were winning games.
@Neans Fast blocked shots, was in the right place at the right time, passed well, shot really well really -accurate and fast..He's an offence and defence player, and probably a better player than Krieder.Its only a matter of time before Fast figures out the individual goalies-he's at that stage-and starts scoring goals.Quick seemed to have a bit of shock at one of Fast's accurate shots, actually.
@Neans I agree, he has really good puck control. I think he makes it.
@TheNYRBlog @TheJamesLeBlanc It should happen, he showed absolutely nothing to earn a spot on the roster. ( could we have another Jessiman on our hands?)
@TheNYRBlog I'm far from giving up on him but it's been well over a year since he's made any type of consistent impact.
@TheNYRBlog Now watch him be sent down and they keep both Falk and Allen lol
@TheNYRBlog that's why I said "consistently"
@TheJamesLeBlanc You mean minus that OT goal to win Game 4 vs. Boston?
