Earlier in the week, Johan Hedberg was playing in a Devils golf tournament contemplating an off ice role with the organization.
Then a call came from his agent saying the Rangers were looking for a goaltender as Marty Biron is expected miss the start of training camp because of personal reasons.
So Hedberg, who is on a professional tryout contract with the Blueshirts, figured why not (via Bergen Record)...
“It gives me a chance to work out with a team and get in shape for whatever might happen. Hopefully, something will happen here and if that wouldn’t be the case, then we’ll reevaluate and see. But at least I know that I’m going to have a really good training camp. I’m here with a very open mind to try to make the most of the opportunity and then we’ll see what happens.”
As far as what his role might be with the Rangers...
“I’m here in camp and I hope I get more information as the days go by. But, as of today, I have no idea."
If Biron isn't back at camp before Monday's preseason opener in New Jersey, he missed his second straight day of camp today, Hedberg is expected to suit up against his former team.
...MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sorry, always wanted to do that.
...unless this turns into a long term issue with Biron, this should be nothing more than a cup of coffee for Hedberg. I do wonder if the Rangers would cut "The Moose" outright or maybe send him down to the Wolfpack as insurance in the event Biron gets injured or struggles. Doubtful, but you never know. It's not like he'd be taking playing time away from a prized goaltending prospect because the Rangers don't have one.
I doubt Hedberg would stick around unless it's to ride the bench in the AHL. It's probably time for Jason Missiaen to stick as the #2 there.
@BrandonFranz I really don't see a future for any of the Rangers goaltending prospects except maybe Malcolm, so I wouldn't be against having him down there for insurance.
