Steve Zipay at Newsday reports that Alain Vigneault has changed up the plan and will make cuts today.
Originally the plan was to wait until after the Las Vegas game on Friday, but Zipay thinks Vigneault now wants to use the last two preseason contests to allow the eventual team to jell.
Zipay adds that Vigneault could cut as many 10 players.
...i like this strategy. Evaluation time is over, time to start getting these guys ready for the regular season.
...i think the easy cuts are McIlrath, Yogan, Kanter, Svret, Hughes and Bickel. Others in the mix to be cut are Asham, Powe, Mashinter and Haley. One of Allen, Falk and Johnson could be Hartford bound as well.
Here's AV's entire post game presser...

Anyone else think its safe to assume that Staal will lead the Rangers in goals (for thier defenseman this year). Think he has stood out in the race for QBing the PP so far
As long as we are playing make-believe and assuming everyone is healthy, these are my lines:
Zuccarello Step Nash
Pouliet Brassard Callahan
Hags Boyle Miller
Powe Moore Dorsett
N.B. Richards & Pyatt in the luxury box. Kreider, Hrivik, Kristo, Fast, Lindberg, and Mashinter all in Hartord.
Conor Allen is interesting, skates well, handles the puck well and looked good even playing on the off side. Something we can only hope for with MDZ.
On a another note no one is talking about needing some toughness. Asham, Haley, Mashinter maybe necessary. Last year it was lacking till Clowe showed up and in the few games he played you could see a difference in the tone of the game and in his absence i am sure everyone can remember Lucic /Nash and how that played out.
Jell?? Kev, are you letting Puck Daddy edit your posts? ;) Sorry, I couldn't resist.
Please keep Hrivik. I'm loving this kid.
Boyle Moore Dorset
Here are my predictions for season opener: Stepan doesn't sign in time, but Callahan recovers. :) Lines:
Defense: Girardi-McDonagh, Staal-Del Zotto, J.Moore-Stralman.
I'd love to see Pyatt cut and keep Mashinter in his place. Mash has had a good camp while Pyatt has been invisible.
It will be nice to see a full team play a game. Miller likely played his way to the top of the keep list last night. If he brings that game to the next one he plays in, he's probably a lock. Assuming the cuts above in Kevin's write-up, I'd say the kid pecking order right now is Miller-Fast-Lindberg-Kristo-Hrivik-Mashinter. There's probably 2 temporary spots for the kids until Cally and Hags come back. I would guess that 2 of Asham-Dorsett-Haley will probably make it as well, with one of them being in the press box. On D, I would say Allen has played best, but not sure they want him sitting in the press box rather than playing top minutes in the AHL. I would bet on Falk. Interesting for sure.
Smart move by AV here. The team has not been playing its best hockey with the constant movement of players that will not be on the big club opening night. With only 8 days til opening night, I like that he saw this and changed course.
@TheNYRBlog didn't they already do that during the offseason
I agree with this strategy too. This team obviously has work to do, so better to settle on a roster and get to work with that crew.
I think Miller will make the squad.
I'll be curious to see what happens with Hrivik, Kristo, Fast, and Lindberg. Have to believe at least one of them might be sent down with the cuts.
@rangersfan I would throw Powe to hartford, move Boyle into his spot, and put Lindberg in as the 3rd line center. Otherwise I like the lines
@queensbee Hey smart ass: Jell, to become clear, substantial, or definite; crystallize: The plan began to jell once we all met to discuss it.
Also, Chronicles of Hrivik.
@FREE LINDBERG My guess is that they will send Lindberg down for 10-15 games, especially if Step is in uniform - then bring him back as an early call up. He's going to add so much to this team with his strength, attitude and of course offense, but from what little I've seen he could use a bit of top line AHL action first to get immersed in all situations of the North American game. If Step is not here it's possible that Boyle could be used as 3rd line center. I like your lines - in putting my 2 cents in I'd like to see Zucc with Brass and Nashty, put your best playmaker with your top scorer. Also Kreid and Nash are supposedly being used as net crashers this year, along with Pouliot and Boyle so it would be best if those 4 were all on different lines. Also would like to see Moore and Boyle, the 2 best face off guys on different lines. I think also we will see Dz on the 2nd pairing. I really like Moore and when the trade came I posted here that he was the guy to especially watch out of the 3, but to start I would expect. him and Strahl to get the 3rd paring. AV will mix and match and try different combos. What works on paper often doesn't pan out on the ice. Chemistry is a funny thing and there is often no rhyme or reason, just got to play different lines and see where the chemistry forms
Think Moore outplayed dz and earned his spot in the top 4, which is going to be lethal. Also think cally may be back, but if not move pouliot up and throw in someone like Pyatt
@Medvjed004 the only guy i dont see makin this roster is asham, he was already waived once earlier this year and i dont think they keep him around any longer so they can clear up some space.
@jslnyr1102 !00% on Pyatt getting cut. After the first 4 games of last season, I could not come up with one reason that Torts stuck with him all year.
@gravey94 I think Kreider needs to be in the kids list as well - he is still a rookie and is playing like one. He probably makes the cut but not sure he hasn't been out worked by some of the other kids.
I think I'm in full agreement here. Free Lindberg is gonna be on your case about Lindberg's placement on the list. Hahaha
Can't wait to hear about cuts.
@NYRangers_BSN Weren't claimed. Will have to go through again if Rangers want to send them down.
@NYRblogneill @TheNYRBlog While i think Powe will definitely be placed on waivers... I might be one of the few that thinks Asham may stick around as a 13th forward.
@AG_Blue I liked Miller's game last night for sure.
@G Yeah, very interested to see if one of those guys gets cut today.
@FREE LINDBERG u r funny about Lindberg. I like him, and I have high hopes for him. He's shown poise at times and real promise, sort of like Stepan did his first camp (but less so, imo). But he's not ready for the NHL, imo.
I have little doubt that if and when they get the 3 forwards back they are missing, that Lindberg will be in Hartford for most of this year. I hope I'm wrong and he's a legit force this year, but I don't see it.
@8ack2NY Pyatt is a skating bag of sh**. If we are looking to save money they should cut him. We have plenty young ones who could fulfill his role.
@AG_Blue Same. Im interested to see what direction he decides to go in
@TheNYRBlog ok thanks
@jslnyr1102 @8ack2NY I'd imagine he'd gave to go through waivers, and I wouldnt be surprised if someone would be interested in his services for half price. That being said, he's only making $1.5 and is in the last year of his contract. Paying him $750k to play for someone else might still work out better for us.
