The New York Rangers (1-4-0) lost to the Vancouver Canucks (2-4-0) by the score of 5-0, tonight. For a box score, go to Yahoo! Sports.
...can't believe I have to do this already, but everyone needs to take a deep breath. It's the PRESEASON. No Cally (who was cleared for contact yesterday). No Hagelin. No Stepan. Kreider wasn't in the line-up. As I said in my last recap, a new coaching staff putting in a new philosophy takes some time to get used to. Next week the coaching staff will get these guys ready for the season and I feel confident saying you will see a much better team take the ice in Phoenix on October 3rd than what you saw last night.
...having said that this preseason has been ugly.
...wait, I thought Torts and Sullivan were the ones holding back the offense? Could it be? No. It can't be. Yes, maybe it was the players who were the problem last year.
...sort of ironic that the new and improved Rangers power play puts up an O'fer while the Mike Sullivan led Canucks power play drops two on the Blueshirts.
...speaking of new and improved, you think Sather is starting to regret not buying out Richards yet, because he's looking frighteningly similar to the broken down center we had to endure last season.
...guess Lundqvist is still trying to get comfortable with the smaller pads.
...to me Miller clinched a spot on the opening night roster.
...Fast? Not so much.
...really not sure how Rangers don't waive Pyatt at this point. Especially when Powe continues to out play him.
...that Dorsett fight is reason #1 the Rangers need Bickel or Mashinter as an extra roster player.
...again, I'm not going to freak out because it's the preseason, but it'd be nice to see the Rangers super star goal scorer, you know, score some goals.
...if John Moore isn't on the second defensive pair over Del Zotto by opening night, I have to seriously start questioning AV's decision making. It's not even close at this point.
...with Fast and Pyatt not showing much last night, I'd say tonight is a pretty big game for Asham, Mashinter, Lindberg and Hrivik in their quest to make the Rangers opening night roster.
...Rangers right back at it tonight in Vegas, baby, Vegas.
Post game reaction (All video can also be viewed at Blueshirts United)...
I said it before, this team lacks a hungry, fire in the belly, win at all costs type of player. No grit, no nastiness, no snarl! Long season....
Based on what I've seen this pre-season. I'm afraid that it's going to be a long and arduous season for the Blueshirts. They do NOT have top talent at all. Aside from Nash, I don't see anyone scoring over 25 goals.
Kesler on Torts' style "it's much more aggressive. We're told to keep moving our legs and forecheck." TORTS WAS NOT DEFENSE FIRST PEOPLE!!!!!!
Wow some fans love to put their heads in the sand here. I love me some Rangers but the problem with this team for the last few seasons has always been the roster. We do NOT have the talent on this team to compete in run and gun games. We have a bunch of glorified third and fourth liners to go along with Lundqvist and Nash. We haven't had a number one center in a long time. We're paying for one but he's not here. Good to have Step back, but he's a second line center. If anyone thinks these "promising" kids are going to equal success in the immediate future you are delusional. If anyone thinks AV can get the same regular season results here with a much less talented roster than the one he had in Vancouver they are insane.
The season hasn't started yet, it ain't over till it's over, true, blah blah blah. Common hockey sense says there are gonna be some serious growing pains. It looks like we're going from all defense & all shot blocking to the complete opposite...lots of defense pinching and forwards missing their back checks. Get ready for a lot of goals against and an unhappy Henrik. Don't shoot the truthful messenger.
At least we can always count on ticket increases!
I'm confident we will find our groove here. However, I'm not confident Richards will. He already seems to be holding on a bit too tight. Yikes, I got a bad feeling about his ability to bounce back the way he needs to this year.
This is not being said as a panic move, since I too agree, it's only pre-season so people need to calm down, but I wonder if the NYR should trade MDZ since Moore has really upped his game. I think MDZ has trade value, and has been rendered somewhat redundant by Moore.
I think we could get a nasty in your face 2nd line power forward straight up for MDZ. Maybe throw in McIltrath and another prospect and that improves to a 1st line player with similar attributes.
What a bizarro game...Hank gets pulled after 2 periods for letting in 5, Luongo stands on his head and Torts PP gets 2...
I know we have 40+ shots, but I think we need more QUALITY scoring chances...Only a handful of those hand any chance of going in...
When did our top 6 forget how to play defense?
@TheNYRBlog I'm still nervous.
Devils & Calgary are 4-2, Tampa and Edmonton are 5-1, Philly, Rangers & Fishsticks are 1-4, Vancouver & Detroit are 2-4. This is just a wild guess, but I don't think those teams mirror that success/failure in the regular season because those results are from P-R-E-S-E-A-S-O-N!!! If this were a full team with the same coach as last year, I MIGHT be a little worried. New coach, new system, 3rd game in 4 days, missing 4 of the top 6 forwards...come on. If they are 1-4 to start the season, then you can increase to DEFCON 3.
"A lot of players that are close, but haven't shown to me that they can play at this level on a consistent basis."
Kreider would seem to make that list, but he's probably going to get a pass for all the upside folks believe he has. Otherwise, one or two guys will make it for the physical game they can bring.
I've lost track of the remaining players but I expect Miller to make the team while Lindberg and Hrivik will certainly be cut.
deflections or not, Hank looked piss poor on a couple of those. that was painful to watch. it still looked to me like it had everything to do with his comfort level and it's not so much about the smaller pads -- especially because he's looked okay with the smaller pads already, and it's not like everything was going in low; but there was definitely one 5-hole goal that would've been blocked w the larger pads. Hank is such a competitor that his horrible game is almost a positive because I expect him to bounce back in a big way
How do you write an entire recap without mentioning how "great" our top D pair looked? I don't remember the last time Girardi was on for five goals against and don't McDonagh ever has been :-/
Maybe it's me, and I'm not saying they were great by any stretch, but I didn't think Pyatt and Fast looked that bad. They were making plays and taking shots (granted none of those shots had any chance of going in but at least they tried) and Pyatt definitely seemed more involved than he's been. Again, maybe it was me.
@TheNYRBlog u said Vegas?
What to look at the big picture. Instead of the score. We Played Well . It was only Because the Longo Played Well we didnt score.
Shitty preseason with so much that is new coming in to this season honestly pisses me off a little. The players don' have and wont have someone to yell at them to get it together either. They ALL have a long wy to go. What magnifys the lackluster play are the bright spots on the team. J Moore. D Moore. Powe. MZA. Pouilett has shown some promise.
Practically everyone else looks like they're not taking the pre season seriously.
And yeah. I know it doesn't count towards the standings because its the preseason. I have a calendar/team schedule, thanks.
If the roster was 100% healthy, this is the team I would roll out there to start the season:
Nash - Stepan - Zuccarello
Pouliot - Brassard - Callahan
Hagelin - Miller - Kreider
Dorsett/Asham/Powe - Moore - Boyle/Mashinter
Girardi - McDonagh
Staal - Moore
Stralman - Allen
Extra dman = Falk/MDZ
I think Lindberg, Fast and Hrivik could you use some games in the AHL to start the season. I would release Pyatt. IMO ... the 4th line wings play based on 2 factors: 1. Opponent 2. Effectiveness. As for Richards ... Not sure what to do with him. I really hesitate to give up on him so soon in the pre-season but from what I've seen, I don't have much hope right now for a rebound season.
@TheNYRBlog (cont.) become a precursor to an awful season (or at least start) with the Giants a month ago.
@TheNYRBlog I honestly think part of the reason fans are overreacting to the preseason here, is because they just saw a bad preseason ...
I think it's the players trying to get used to the system. Plus it's been a long evaluation process. Not a lot of game prep which will happen the coming week.
@TheNYRBlog giants sucked in preseason look at them now. I am scared
I hate that phrase: "I said it before"
Anyway, Callahan is that player (though he lost it at times last year due to injury and the team disintegrating under Torts), and if the team can get together as a team, the feeling becomes contagious and we'll be surprised to see how many guys show that heart. I gotta agree with you 100% that we're not seeing right now though. I'd love to see some of that grit coming from Nash and Kreider.
@AveryYesBettmanNo Don't agree 100%, but i dont think youre way off either. Early on in his hiring, AV made a lot of comments along the lines of "I want to play up tempo, offensive and attacking, and I've been told we have the talent to do that". He didn't watch any tape (apparently) of last season.
So it will be interesting as this team unfolds in front of him, does he alter his thinking and strategy as well. He seems much more capable of adjusting to his players than Torts. I agree with guys like Dave Maloney that you can't "shot block your way to a championship". There has to be a level on skill and finesse. It will be interesting to watch who AV feels he can count on for that.
Some guys he'll be able to "unleash" while others are going to show that they were made to succeed in Tort's system.
@Iron Mike I agree. I think the team will be fine. The signs I see from preseason that are:
-Brad Richards. Looks the same as last year.
-Chris Kreider. He needs to go back to playing an up tempo, more free, crash the net game. He still seems to be like a chicken with his head cut off sometimes, albeit a fast chicken, though he's much better defensively.
-no enforcer or nasty presence anywhere. We need someone who's gonna make other players think twice about running our players, particularly Hank. Dorsett is not gonna cut it.
@Iron Mike I think he'll be better when he, Stepan, and Brassard are the 3 centers. For most of the pre-season, he's been the only real threat at center in the games he's played. Once teams can't key in on him, he should play better and have more room to play his game.
@HokE It's not about quantity of shots, it's about the quality.
the fellas got their work cut out and they know it
looking forward to the next cuts
@AG_Blue Hank is always a slow starter (and when I say slow, that's relative, cause slow for him is like 5 games). Once he gets his groove, which he always does, he'll be fine.
@Melissa (blknblueshirts) I agree on Pyatt, I thought he looked much better last night. Unfortuntely BR and Zucc are set-up guys, and if the 3rd guy on that line can't finish, then it doesn't really matter who it is.
@IcyCup I hear you. I keep saying "It's just pre-season" but then I did the same for the Giants when they looked like @#$# in pre-season and they actually managed to get worse once the season started. Still hoping for the best and expecting better from the Rangers.
obviously you have too many guys there, but that's not the only reason you've run out of money
Miller came to play, no doubt
@AG_Blue @TruBluEsp The 4th line wingers could be any of those. I really don't care b/c I think they are all expendable. But if you ask what my preferred 4th line would be:
Dorsett - Moore - Boyle with Mashinter and/or Asham as extra forward. If I could trade Boyle, I would. If I could trade Richards, I would.
That all sounds good to me (except Boyle goes on the left). I like that you included Powe in your previous lineup too, he's a competitor and I like him better than Pyatt. Ultimately, I'm not sure there's a spot for him. Hopes are not high for Richards but I'm rooting for him for the moment and counting on him being bought out next summer.
Dorsett brings a good spark, but he's borderline. With all his toughness, he can't really fight. Still, it's difficult to give his spot to Mashinter outright, and it's easy to see Asham as the 13th fwd.
4th line: Boyle - Moore - Mash OR Dorsett and Asham
