While talking to Tom Gulitti at the Bergen Record (H/T Pro Hockey Talk) about the reduction in goaltender's pad size this season, Marty Broduer took a subtle swipe at the netminder who plays in the city "not too far" away (wink, wink)...
“There’s goalies - I won’t name names, but they’re not too far – they have different padding that it’s not about protection. There’s a lot of guys that do wear these type of things because the pads are so loose guys feel the need to bulk their knees up for protection, but sometimes it’s overboard a little bit.”
When told of the comment, Henrik Lundqvist responded with this (via New York Post)...
“I know people have thought that I look big out there, but that’s never been an issue with me. I know I’m ‘not too far’ but I don’t know what he’s talking about.”
...sounds like someone still can't get over the fact that he isn't the top dog in the NHL anymore. Talk about low class. Although, what do you expect from a guy who not only banged his sister-in-law, but also did this...
...as far as the ridiculous allegations go, I was a goalie from age 7-18 and I never once wore additional knee padding, which was a huge mistake as I caught many a puck in that exposed area. So, I don't fault Lundqvist or any other goaltender for wearing it. And I've got to ask, if the extra protection is behind the leg pad, how exactly does that help Lundqvist make saves?
It was nice to see Johan Hedberg, before he was cut, give some levity to the situation...
“If you’re not cheating, you’re not trying.”
Speaking of Lundqvist, the ESPN hockey experts (can you say oxymoron?) recently named him the top goaltender in the NHL going into the 2013-14 season.
And most of the players in the league agreed...

ESPN.com ranked Ryan McDonagh as the 10th best defenseman.
...wow, very impressive to see him ranked ahead of guys like Pietrangelo, Seabrook and Yandle after just three years in the NHL. Should only be a matter of time before he's contending for a Norris Trophy.
Dan Girardi was ranked #14 and Michael Del Zotto was #38.
...absolutely embarrassing job by ESPN ranking Del Zotto and not Staal.
Coming from a 300 lb fatso who takes up most of the net and loses every time he is forced to face more than 10 shots or 3 scoring chances? Like a tree that falls in the forest that nobody hears, if there were no fans at any of your games, did you really win any of them?
Through the first eight seasons of his career, Lundqvist has almost 30 more wins than uncle daddy had through the first eight seasons of his career. Despite the fact that uncle daddy had defensemen like Stevens, Niedermayer, Daneyko, etc. all in their primes in front of him. With those d men, they played a boring trap system where fatso barely faced any shots. He was a product of that system, his defenseman bought those wins and awards for him. How many Cups has he won without Stevens, Niedermayer, and Daneyko all in front of him? Through the first six seasons of his career, Hank had some awful swiss cheese defenses in front of him. Some of those blue lines consisted of Malik, Ozolinsh, Rachunek, Poti, Strudwick, Rozsival, Redden, Kalinin, and a bunch of other horrible stiffs I don't even want to remind myself of. Not to mention, he's gotten a very small amount of goal support throughout his career too. Despite having to actually face shots and have a higher amount of pressure on his shoulders, he still has more wins through eight seasons than uncle daddy did. He definitely has at least another good 6, 7 seasons left in him (he will sign a contract extension to stay in NY, no question) and keeps averaging the same amount of wins per year (probably more from here since he finally has an offensive minded coach, which will enable him to get more goal support than ever before), he will destroy uncle daddy's wins record. Also, unlike fatso/uncle daddy, a classless jerk who screws his sister in law and wouldn't even shake Avery's hand, Hank is a class act who plays the game with an incredible amount of passion and hard work, much rather have that!! Hope the debbies enjoy getting a top five draft pick next June, (oh wait a minute), lol. And, one more thing for a debbies fan to be commenting on a Rangers page proves how obsessed they are with us, they worry more about us than their own team, its the ultimate inferiority complex!
Katherine, all us Ranger fans know you are compensating for your lack of a life by all your anti-ranger rants!!! It's okay, we know you pretty much a loser
Hell yeah I will boast. We've won three Cups since your last. BOAST BOAST BOAST! We may be in a "re-tooling" phase, but we'll still come up on top over the Rangers. Pathetic for an original six. El oh El!
@TheNYRBlog hahaha you are a joke real professional keep living a lie
Overrated? Hahahahahaha my god. If he was a ranger, he would have city blocks named after him and statues outside msg. My god. I'm done here now.
My Mom used to say to me, "I don't care what the other kids do. I care what you do." I don't care what the other goalies do. I care what Hank does. Hank's classy response, taking the comment with a grain of salt, puts him in a league of his own.
Yeah, that's what I figured, Dan. It's all good. Our opinions mean shit compared to what happens on the ice!!!
Never said Lundqvist was the only one with big pads. A lot of European goalies tend to have them. The theory around the Devils is that Lou Lamoriello always signs and drafts North American goalies because he doesn't like European goalies' oversized pads.. It might be true, we've never had a European goalie..
Y are you Devil fans on a NYR blog? I guess you need to pump your chest!! And if you think Hank was the only one who had large leg pads, you're nuts!!! Now, Marcello, go to the Devils Army blog and leave us Ranger fans alone!!! Oh, and just a side bet, my boys win a Cup before your guys will; with Corey Schneider, Marty Broduer, Ken Dryden, Patrick Roy in your net - "We Will Win Tonight"!!
It's really not up for debate whether Lundqvist had some of the largest pads in the league. If he didn't, he wouldn't have had to change them over the summer because of the new rules, right? It's really that simple. If his pads were kosher, he'd be wearing the same pads as last year, but they were not kosher. Disagree with me here, with facts, PLEASE.
The only thing I can say about this ^^ comment is, Don Cherry is far from an intelligent analyst!!! He's the biggest blowhard in the NHL (Mike Milbury is he's latest pupil). Lou L is the best GM and if you look strictly at results over the last 13 years, Lou has been # 1 in the NYC area compared to Uncle Glennie, no dispute. But the Devils will NEVER be perceived as #1 in the NYC area!!
With all this said, i do love ryan callahan. he is a class act and great player. Lundqvist is obviously awesome too but he seems to give up the soft goals in big spots. Until he wins something, please stop the comparisons. Good Luck to all.
haha this is funny. ya know what i found funny arthur? I was looking at some of the comments from the people who called Marty fat and they are MUCH fatter than him. Very comical stuff. As for the predictions? i dont do that. You guys have a talented squad and I think we will surprise a lot of teams this year. We haven't had this much depth in a very long time. And as for the red headed step child thing? wrong. As a person who has played hockey all my life, i can tell you that only the media and ranger fans thing we are not "the team" around this area. Ask players and gms around the league who is a second class citizen around here and it will certainly not be us. Now that our financial issues are behind us, watch out. Like Don cherry and several intelligent analysts have already noticed, we have one of the fastest growing fan bases in the sport.. LGD!
^^Wow, way to boast!!! Cause Schneider won so much with the Canucks!!! Not that I care that a Devils' fan is on our NYR blog but boasting 3 more Cups is just blind faith. I bet my boys win a Cup before your Cory Devils will!!! Now there's a boast!!!
Marty can have 3ft wide pads this year and it won't make a difference.... Shut up and stay at the bottom of the standings devils fans. Kovalchuk was the only smart one on the team. He's not going to get locked into a second rate team that no one wants to come to and that's going to be fighting for last spot in the standings. You can have all the cups you want, but you'll always be the red headed step child of the Metro area.
Hey man, it's not up to me. I've been saying for 3 seasons that we need a young backup goal tender. Marty can't do this forever. It doesn't take his legendary status away from him, that likely no other goalie will take from him. Just glad Lou wised up and snagged Cory for us. Don't know about you, but there could be three more Stanley's in our family from this incredible pick up! Good luck and LGD!
I'm a goalie who still plays the game. The NHL doesn't allow thigh guards on your pads, which makes sense are far as the pad rules go because it really does close off the 5 hole. That being said, you mean to tell me you're cheating because you don't want to take a clapper from Chara off the top of your knee? I just don't understand. I've been hit there playing beer league hockey. If I took an NHL shot off the knee I probably wouldn't get up.
^^ same can be said of Marty's accomplishments; move on!!! It's been 10 years since the last one, altho, I'd take that!!! It's been almost 20 since our last Cup. Oh, and the Fatso nickname and the Sean Avery snub is getting old but ya gotta realize, that's how we felt about the 1940 chant!!!
Fatso strikes again... Good thing his kid won't amount to anything in the nhl what a joke that he got drafted. Guess he can't handle that hank is leaps and bounds ahead of him now. But really did we expect a guy that plowed his sister in law to finish his career with class?
@TheNYRBlog brodeur is just washed up and doesn't want to admit it njd are a retirement facility between him and jagr haha
I can't wait to not have to hear Marty whining about everything. It's sad and disgusting to see a player with his caliber of talent continually show such poor sportsmanship. I hope Schneider plays the entire season.
@lennynyr just need two defensemen. Denis Potvin and someone else......
@ttbeehann jagr is gonna pull a kovy halfway through the season after realizing the mistake he made playing in that shit hole in Newark
