Despite Darroll Powe's last second heroics, poking in a goal off a wild scramble in front of the net that originated from a Kreider shot with 0.4 seconds remaining, the baby Rangers fell 3-2 in a shootout to the Norfolk Admirals in a sloppy, penalty riddled home opener. The Wolf Pack put 37 shots onto Admiral goaltender Frederik Andersen, a Danish import who two seasons ago broke Henrik Lundqvist's shutout record with the Frölunda Indians.
Chris Kreider: Game high 7 shots on goal; used on PK in the first period, not defensively sound leaving high quality scoring areas unchecked; wrister on goal from the high slot led to tying tally; constantly at the top of the crease in the offensive zone waiting on rebounds.
Danny Kristo: Made a horrific turnover deep in defensive zone that led to Norfolk's first goal; settled in and scored Hartford's first goal in the third period, ripping a shot high glove side from a feed from newly named captain Aaron Johnson; scored only goal for Hartford in the shootout.
Marek Hvirik: Three shots; played well but didn't stand out positively or negatively.
Oscar Lindberg: Centered top line with Kreider and Hvirik; not overly impressive although he did try to make plays with some crafty passing to his wingers, specifically one to Hvirik in the second period between the sticks of two Admiral defenders for a scoring chance.
Dylan McIlrath: Held his own in a fight against AHL career enforcer Zack Stortini; not much in the way of an offensive game; defensively sound besides his failure to block a shot leading to Norfolk's second goal.
The Wolf Pack are back at it again later on today at 3 pm at home against the Albany Devils.
