Among numerous complaints from Rangers fans this season has been the team's lack of toughness. We've already seen twice so far this year a top Blueshirt player take a hit to the head from an opponent without so much as a dirty look in response from a teammate.
Enter Brandon Mashinter, who has a reputation as a guy who isn't afraid to drop the gloves or stick up for a teammate which you can see in this video from last season...
And don't be fooled into thinking the 25-year old Mashinter is nothing more than a thug, because the guy has under-rated skill as proved by his 132 points (64g, 68a) in four plus AHL seasons.
When Sean Avery came to the Rangers he forever found a place in Rangers fans hearts with one push of a certain Devils goaltender and turned around the mindset of the Blueshirts in the process...
I'm really hoping Mashinter gets the opportunity to come through with a moment like that to get this team and the season headed in the right direction. Thursday night in Philly wouldn't be a bad place to start.
I think I still would have preferred Haley. Have a lot of Islander fans in the family who lamented the day he left the organization and had the same gripes about why he could never stay up with the big club. I think if we are looking for energy and hitting, Haley is the guy. Plus, he goes toe-to-toe with anyone when it comes to fighting. He can skate and didn't look too bad on the PK. Am I missing something? I am still happy that Mashinter is in the mix though. Hopefully, he will be allowed to play his game. If he isn't, he will be just as useless as Dorsett.
I just feel that we need more guys that can turn the game around when the other team is up by 2 or 3 goals. For this year's team, if its 2-0, you might as well turn the game off. Its amazing what one big, booming hit can do to a game.
Kreider on the first line... Took about 3 weeks but AV finally making smart decisions with the lines...
I personally don't see Mashinter as the Avery type of player. If they wanted an agitator and someone who can put the focus on himself they would have brought up Michael Haley. Mashinter gives the Rangers a bit of size on their 4th line and someone who hopefully can answer the bell if someone runs a Ranger...but he is not the thorn in the side of the opponent type of player.
im so sick of hearing sean avery saved the rangers or in any way turned around the belief of the orginization? what? sean avery was a punk and a disraction and a below average hockey player. thats why hes gone, enough with sean avery he was horrible. the ranger fans who used to chant his name were clueless...he acted tough got knocked all over the ice and never fought for anyone. hes gay
this team was so much more fun to watch with Avery on it. I can't fault torts for much, but his unwarranted hate of Avery is one thing I resent him for. when in the right frame of mind Avery was priceless. I would love it if he came out of retirement and came back.
The kid can fight no question...and he's been able to score at a nice level for a tough guy at the AHL level. Let's hope he can get involved and play a consistent physical game on the NHL level...last year he didn't, but like AV says, clean slate, grab it!
Damn I miss that dude. Love him or hate him, he played with passion and had bigger balls than most. We could use alittle of that spark.
Is anyone else more worried about the future of Rick Nash? Can't help but think any time this guy gets tapped now he is going to be out. The hit that gave him the concussion was nothing in the grand scheme of things.
Hard to swallow whats unfolding thus far with the Rangers. Hoping Kreider and Mash can bring SOMETHING to this team. I really liked the Kristo/Fast/Lindberg line in preseason...should just bring those two up while we are at it.
The real problem with the team is not the personnel, which is decent, but not great. This team is playing much, much worse than the sum of its parts. The only real place to point the finger right now is at the coaching staff (and the front office).
My complaint has and always will be goal scoring... Toughness doesn't win games, goals do! The sharks don't have goons... They have speed, goal scoring and team toughness.. That is why they are the best team in the NHL
you rewatched and realized what happened?
I'm a Haley fan too. I thought he exceeded expectations as far as skating and actually playing hockey. He's more than a goon too, even if he doesn't quite have Mashinter's offensive upside. I was a fan to see Haley make it out of camp. Oh well ...
@Trade DelZotto+Girardi4E.Kane Not sure if this is smart, but time will tell. I think it would be good for Kreider to be on 2nd line, so there's less pressure on him at the onset.
@Trade DelZotto+Girardi4E.Kane In fairness to AV, Kreider spent most of the preseason on a first line and did absolutely nothing. He needs to play with energy now or he's not going to stay there for long.
@LanceGold1 I hear you, I meant more of an energy type guy who can get the team going through a fight or a big hit. Maybe Rupp is a better comparison?
@DubiLeetch Has nothing to do with the fight itself. It's the fact he is sticking up for a teammate....which none of the players on this team do. Not to mention he slammed the player to the ice.
@DubiLeetch The guy single-handedly saved three Rangers seasons. Hell, you could even argue he had a hand in the turn around last year after he called out Torts on Twitter.
@DubiLeetch Avery may not have "saved' the NYR but he had the ability to get other teams to focus on him and not their game. He took dumb penalties and rarely got the benefit of the doubt when he was accosted however when he focused on playing hockey he had decent hands and could score. You many not have liked him or his style but questioning his sexual preference only makes you look bad
@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG Like Sean Avery or not, he was entertaining to watch.
@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG my suspiscion as to why torts hated avery is because his PK unit couldnt handle the penalties he would take. so torts had to cover his own @$$ and project some hate onto him...ive said it before, but who wants to go fishing for avery's skates in the hudson with me?
Gotta disagree… was fine when he first came over but then turned into something of an embarrassment - fire & passion is one thing, but the garbage with Marty was over the top. Don't miss him at all, but agree they need a tougher attitude
@xxscaxx like the mysterious case of Mike Sauer?
@xxscaxx I'm very worried. Not only that he is concussion prone but that it will effect his mental game when he is able to play.
@xxscaxx I think they are going to bring up Wolfpack players such as Kristo and LIndberg as they start to show they can contribute consistently game after game in the AHL, maybe mid season, maybe sooner.Fast has been playing well and all he has to do is score a few goals and people will suddenly notice how he is a positive for the Rangers. At the moment he is often in the right place at the right time but getting knocked around, I bet very soon he'll adjust, understand the NHL game and find the net.He should be on the top line actually and see how that works.I bet he clicks there.
RIck Nash is the elephant in the room for everybody right now.Nobody wants to talk about the worst case and is just holding their breath. He is a difference maker on this team, and is necessary to play at his best for us to succeed. But hopefully he will be fine now and in the future.
@xxscaxx Who? Glass jaw?? Yup. This is the shape of things to come with Nash. Once you get concussed, the rest tend to come easy.
Look at Clowe, granted he voluntarily takes hits to the head as it's part of his game but I bet the Devils are already regretting the 5 year 25 mil deal they signed him for. He's out again, with serious concussion symptoms after another hit to the head. Glad the Rangers dumped him.
@xxscaxx Might not be long before we see Kristo and Lundberg if this keeps up.
@rangersfan no no, just the front office. AV and co don't have a great personnel to work with, it's not their fault this team forgot how to hockey fundamentals seemingly overnight.
@Trade DelZotto+Girardi4E.Kane The Sharks are playing great hockey but they have never had a playoff gear. They can win the presidents trophy every year and still not win the cup because they think they can just keep playing the same level in the playoffs. They need someone in the locker room that's been deep in the playoffs and knows how rare it is - someone to motivate them to the conference finals and beyond. If not for Drew Remenda's awful color commentary I'd like them a lot more!
@Trade DelZotto+Girardi4E.Kane ...the Sharks might not be TOUGH, but they're a big team to play against, they have a good mix of size and skill. Brassard HAS to go, same with Pouliet...I'm not sure if Sather got the memo but these former first rounders were considered busts years ago.
@Trade DelZotto+Girardi4E.Kane Once healthy, I think the Rangers do have enough offense. I'm still not convinced the toughness is here. Hopefully Mashinter is the answer.
@Chris24 @DubiLeetch i like it too but sometimes it does have to do with the fight itself. ever see a guy lose a fight bad on his home ice? it kills the crowd and is counteractive to his teammates usually. remember the whole point of the message is fear is it not? say mashinter fights stuart after he hits nash, the team may get a boost but if he loses the fight it doesnt stop stuart from doing it again. when you get lumped up or your teeth knocked out you think about it twice
Yes I agree, not sure what the devils were thinking on that one. The only upside Nash has for him is he isn't that type of player and hes so damn tall most guys can't hit him in the head lol. I know there are a lot of Nash haters but I really hope he can pull through. Would be nice to see at least one damn season of him tearing it up for us...
I was a big Gabby fan...but if this thing with Nash goes South, where do we go from there? Legitimate question. I just don't know what the hell we would do if Nash turns concussion prone (likely he is already)
I don't think we have nearly enough scoring... If kreider was a 30 goal scorer it would be different, and clearly that isn't the case yet... But even when healthy we have one (maybe two if you count Callahan) player that knows how to finish... And he has head problems now...
It's different when you are up 3 goals and are 6-0 then when you are up two and are 1-5.... The rangers needed a win badly and I'm sure they they didn't want to give the best pp in the game a chance to make it a close game against the caps. And at the time Nash got hit it was only 2-1....
@Trade DelZotto+Girardi4E.Kane And that's way having a team that can grind out wins is so important.
