"And you thought the Rangers forechecked hard under Torts. Players looked much more comfy in AV system last night"....how'd that work out last night?
@TheNYRBlog lmao bourbon for breakfast bro?
I could not sleep well last night, not surprising given how embarrassed I am after watching that pile of puke last night. When the Whalers left town back in 1997, I was devastated, but my former neighbor (and Whaler backup goalie) Jason Muzzatti was traded to the Rangers before the 97-98 season began, so I became a Ranger fan. My dad was shocked and told me I was making a huge mistake, boy was he right.
I have been thinking about last season and how this year has begun for awhile now. I know all the optimists will say "but we are only 3 games in", but here is my take. Just two seasons ago we made the ECF and hate great chemistry. Then when we get sent home following the loss to the Devils, Sather says "gee that was not good enough for my team, I need to make a huge trade." So we make a huge trade with Columbus for Rick Nash. Now Rick Nash has never been my favorite player as I have always found that he scores most of his goals against teams that struggle and often comes up short in big games. Mind you, I did my Master's in Ohio and had partial season tickets out there. Little did I know back then that I was watching the future NY Rangers.
So we made this huge trade and then the half of the season was canceled last year. Lovely. I love hockey so much that I would gladly accept this government shutdown over missing half a season. So the Bettmaned season start and the Rangers underwhelmed. We did not have chemistry. Players were not sticking up for one another and oh God if we were scored against we just shut down, most of the time. Well as it looked more and more like we could potentially miss the playoffs, Sather once again gets one of his brilliant, and I mean brilliant ideas. Let's make a trade with Columbus again! Well, we got a few of the pieces we were missing and got into the playoffs.
We barely made it out of the first round, but we looked okay, until Boston. We did not look great at all in that series. So Sather, with his infinite wisdom, decides that none of this is his fault as come on, the year after you fall in the ECF you always blow up the team, and so Sather cans the coach. Mind you, I know many hated Torts, but he is the only coach, since I started following the Rangers after the Whalers departure, that has brought any consistency to this club. So Sather brings in a free flowing offensive coach from Vancouver, and finalizes the Rangers transformation of becoming the New York Blue Jackets by also bringing in one of the most despised coaches in Blue Jackets history (and they have had more than there fair share of craptastic coaches in there 12 year existence) . Only problem is this team was not built for this style of hockey and so far it has showed in preseason and this season. I still do not think we were great against LA, and we did have help from Quick.
The point I am trying to make is, this behavior from a GM cannot be tolerated or even rationalized. We were first in the Eastern Conference just two years ago, and now we have a totally different team. A team that lacks chemistry and where the players rarely stick up for one another. Look at all the elite teams in the league, they are largely the same, but they have been adding the incomplete pieces Pittsburgh last year made some of the best moves I have ever seen a GM make, but they fell short because Fluery having an off postseason. I hate to see Hank leave, but at the same time, I am beginning to look for the exit doors, at least until Sather is gone. Sorry for the rant, but I have been thinking about this for awhile. I hope I can eat crow this year and say in June that wow this team is awesome and AV was the best hire ever, but I just do not see it. I didn't see it last season and so far I sure as hell do not see it this year. Rant over.
@TheNYRBlog advocating going to work drunk? Although I don't know how many of us survived that travesty. Thankfully I slept through it.
@TheNYRBlog ain't that the truth
@TheNYRBlog The Rangers really suck right now. If Brad Richards is our best player we are screwed. Looked like pick up hockey last night.
@TheNYRBlog How ugly was that Kevin? Nash update?
@TheNYRBlog ugh! I stayed up late to watch the game knowing my 2 month old would be up at 3 am. Big mistake! So not worth the tiredness :(
@TheNYRBlog After looking at last night's score and comments, I think I'll need a vodka chaser as well...
