After yet another Rangers debacle last night, Alain Vigneault seemed to be happy with the Rangers defensive effort, which only allowed eight scoring chances. Unfortunately, the Devils scored on four of them, leading the Rangers head coach to say this about his All World goaltender...
“I’m sure if you ask him that he knows he can be better than what he has shown. He needs to be better. From the short time I have been with him I know that he is a true professional, he had a great game in Washington, a great practice and is a hard worker and that is what we will do. We need a better push back when the other team scores the first or second goal against.”
He later reiterated that Lundqvist "can be better."
Lundqvist owned up to his poor play as well (via Blueshirts United)...
“It starts with me. I have to be better, give confidence to the group. I didn't stop enough pucks.”
...assuming the last thing Vigneault figured he'd have to worry about coming to the Rangers was the goaltending. He just left a disaster of a situation in Vancouver and now this. He must be like "WTF." Bottom line with the Rangers, if Lundqvist isn't on his game this team has no chance. So he needs to figure this out and figure it out fast.
...to the statement, I'm not so sure I like the idea of AV calling out Hank in the media. It's bad enough the Rangers poor play likely already has Lundqvist planning his escape route, now he has his head coach publicly critiquing him? Not good.
...although, if Lundqvist keeps playing like this, I doubt anyone will want him.
Here's Vigneault's entire press conference...
Lundqvist didn't look good on any of the goals but this one by Adam Henrique was easily the worst...
It is amazing to me how many "fans" turn on Hank after a few bad games. This is not a rookie we're talking about. This is a perennial all-star, Vezina trophy candidate, and considered one of if not the best goalie in the world, by other NHLers (not us fans)
We all love Hank, but I have ZERO problem with AV calling out ANY underperforming players...including "The King". Nobody on this team can afford to be a primadonna, and these grown men who've had their balls tickled by the media need a little shot of reality once in a while.
As much as I love Hank, and will be devastated if he leaves, he has got to get it together. I know he's set in his ways, but he needs to learn about change.
Vig is right for calling out Hank. He's not going to sign with these misfits so I would look to trade him. Bet lots of teams would want him. On the other hand, Vig is out of his mind putting Pyatt on the top line much less not getting rid of him. Just because he played well for Vig a few years ago isn't a good reason to keep him now since he has sucked since being a Ranger.
Hank needs to better? putting Pyat on the first line is not my idea of a sound coaching decision. Maybe AV created the goalie disaster in Vancouver. I'm just saying.
I don't see his comments as being negative or unwarranted. He basically said that Lundqvist needs to be better and that he expects that he will. He said he works hard and is a true professional and will turn it around. All sounds pretty factual and tame to me. Lundqvist basically said the same about himself. He's not lying when he says the team gave up 8 scoring chances and that's about as low as you're going to see in an NHL game. I think we're making more of these comments than what they really are. Bottom line is the personnel on the team is not right for this style of hockey. Most of these guys aren't smart enough or skilled enough to handle it. Tortorella dumbed down the game for them and they thrived, but his style punished them too often. We need personnel changes and quickly.
Queen Henrietta is becoming such a diva, outplayed by Marty just like in the 2012 semis. Worst OT playoff record of any top goalie, got Torts fired, etc. Build a core instead of sinking all cap money into one position and you can win without a "Star" goalie. Sound familiar Blackhawks fans?
No chemistry, no heart, very little enthusiasm and they need some veteran leadership not a ton of prospects that don't have a clue!
Hank looks like Richards did last year under Torts. Maybe AV and his new system wasn't the answer after all.
This team has the worst neutral zone play in the league! Almost every game the Rangers have lost, is because of their neutral zone play. They probably lead the league in neutral zone turnovers. Our goaltending has been terrible to this point.
i could only imagine what fans wou;d be sayin if torts did this, big deal he called him out, hes been terrible
Hank is not going to be shown any money. As enough of us have said, if it's about winning a Cup versus the money, Hank will want to be traded and the team should oblige and attempt to get maximum value, assuming he starts to play better, which continues to be an issue. Then, they are going to have to find a solid free agent goalie, which won't be easy with that idiot Sather at the helm.
Well, he's right. Those first two goals were on Hank, and they were after 6 shots. How are we gonna win like that?
It seems that no matter where AV goes, a goalie circus pops up! And this guy is starting to look just blatantly unprofessional. Terrible hire. It is beginning to look like his record in Vancouver was because of his personnel and not his tactics.
This is what the players wanted: a kindger, gentler voice. Rather than be punched between the eyes from honest Torts' criticism, they preferred to be stabbed in the back by AV and his backhanded comments.
Hank let the team down when they needed him on top of his game. It's rare, but it happens. He's a leader on this team and needs to be aces almost every night
Talbot is necessary to be backup so we can haul Lundqvist out if he lets in any more softees. On top of that, It looks like Cam Talbot is psyched up from his good performances in AHL and would be a good starter against Philly, actually IMO,He could get us a needed win.
I say keep Kreider in Hartford until next season. I think it will do him a better service than bringing him up to a bloody shambles of a team right now. Of course, if you believe what the Ottawa Sun is reporting then Kreider is on the market as trade bait for a Top 6 forward.
what they need is some god damn scoring. dont worry about hank. he'll get hi shit together. it everyone else im worried about.
Show Hank the money and it won't matter...AV should be calling out Sather. Anyone with a brain and an ounce of hockey sense saw this coming.
I'm honestly shocked that we called up talbot and not Kreider. I honestly think sather has gone retarded, and AV is just a moron with no hockey knowledge
@johnpnj Excatly. That's the job of a head coach in this league. He's putting things in perspective and it's not like AV didn't speak to Hank directly about this before making those comments.
@giammarcor What AV said is 100% accurate, but as a former goaltender I understand how important the mental part of the game is, so hearing your coach publicly call you out is never good for the confidence. Would rather he kept it in house. Hank knows he's been bad, doesn't need coach announcing it to the world.
@J Arsenio D'Amato What? Are you trolling? Dev fan? Without Hank, the NYR probably do not make the playoffs very often.
@tygalpin That Henrique goal was no "softie" perfect shot. If he saves it it's a highlight reel save but 90% those go in no matter who's between the pipes. I'm not that worried about Hank.
@JustinRP37 So what does that say about the NYR? It says the reality is that this team is not very good no matter who the coach, and that's on Sather.
@JustinRP37 another typical Rangers management blunder
@Colin Kelly The team has let Hank down repeatedly for years. How many times have we've seen Hank stand on his head, only to lose cause the team can't score any goals?
@rangermom Hank has always been a slow starter. Takes him about 10 games or so to find "Vezina" mode. Hank is the least of my worries on this team.
