...anyone else reminded of Torts hearing AV say "we had our opportunities, we just needed to make a play."
...despite all the doom and gloom this morning, I did feel there was more flow to the offense than last year and that once the team gets a firm grasp on this system, we'll see a much more consistent offensive effort.
The players also reacted...

...Lundqvist must have been throwing his hands up after this one wondering where all the goal scoring that he thought AV would bring is.

...i echo Staal's statement about staying out of the box. While it hasn't been egregious, I felt the Rangers were a bit undisciplined in the preseason and it looks to have leaked into the regular season.
I commented on the original post about all the gloom and doom - seems overstated. I saw some good things out there last night.
Just throwing out some names here, potential targets for a DZ trade (think we need a top 6 winger for him):
Florida - Tomas Kopecky (6'3 and 203 pounds, had 15 goals and 27 points last year)
Calgary - Curtis Glencross (6'1 and 197 pounds, had 15 goals and 26 points last year)
And this is my pipe dream, and very far fetched.... i dont even think it would work with the cap
Winnipeg - Del Zotto + Boyle + 2nd Round pick for Evander Kane (17 goals and 16 assists last year). This would allow for Lindberg to come up and play 3rd line center, and to get under the cap... put Pyatt on waivers.
Let me know what you guys think of these players
Here we go already with we gave it the old college try for another long season of excuses !
Bottom Line : It doesn't matter who coaches the team - The Rangers will never compete against the elite NHL teams for several reasons :
1. They lack grit , a true power forward and a super heavyweight ENFORCER who creates space on the ice for their teammates . Boyle and Piatt are soft as papyrus and aren't worth the NHL minimum. People are giving Nash props today because he stuck up for his HOLD OUT TEAMMATE. STEPAN looked like he hadn't skated in months and was lost. If Nash would of broken his hand or face with a punch , I wonder if that would give people more excuses why we will never be an elite team . Our franchise goal scorer is fighting . MAKES A TON OF SENSE !
Our only true power forward is undersized and had off-season shoulder surgery. He also doesn't clearly fill the role.
2. The system - The system The system - . THEY HAVE TO GET USED TO IT ! I LOVE THAT ONE !
3. Who hits ? Who Passes ? Who skates ? Who shoots ? Who scores garbage goals ? Who fights ? Who wears other teams down ? It isn't the Rangers .
KEEP MAKING EXCUSES IN THE FIRST WEEK OF THE SEASON BECAUSE NOTHING IS GOING TO CHANGE UNTIL SATHER LEAVES THE BUILDING .
I felt like i was watching a figure skating competition last night .
Great job Slats on some great off season moves to improve the club !
At least how they gained the zone on the PP goal last night was pretty. Haven't seen that from a NYR team in a long time.
I don't regret flying out to phx for the game but gotta say I wasn't overly impressed with what I saw. Maybe there were first game jitters or something, but overall our boys played a pretty sloppy game.
If Mike Smith doesn't make a few big saves in the 1st who's to say what the result would've been, but as Kevin mentioned the lack of depth in the scoring department is painfully obvious.
1 game out of 82 in the books. Heres to hoping they get it together sooner than later.
As a side note: What are Boyle's sticks made out of? Balsa wood? I think he might actually play better without a stick though. He made some heroic blocks.
Not for nothing but Smith played really good. Feel aslleep going into the third but the save he made on Poulie from a cross feed from Brassard was great.
The problem with the penalties is they are masked when you have a good pk, like the Rangers have had for the past couple of years... But this year their pk has been awful so every pk is magnified.... And in our division with four of the best power plays (Washington, Pitt, nyi, and philly) we need to figure it out fast
@Paulie Gualtieri Thanks Paulie! That means a lot.
@cb1 If we can get out of the road trip with 9 goals I may be happy...
@Free Lindberg Love that Winnipeg deal - Evander will look great in Blue! Let's do it. You put in the call to Slats and I'll drop the LSD into Winni GM's water
@Free Lindberg get rid of DZ yeah. how to replace, not sure.
i really like EK as a player but have heard he has discipline and attitude problems.
E. Kane would be a great acquisition but isn't his cap hit something ridiculous? We're already cash strapped with the current contracts.
Kopecky and Glencross are kinda getting up there too. Would they be a short term solution? Yes. But I think one of these two players + a draft pick would be better. Both Florida and Calgary are in the rebuilding stage so I think getting a young "PP QB" could help.
@stan jonathan though I agree with you about Sather the rest is overstated IMHO. It's unfathomable how he did not buy out Richey. Not in his prime is he worth his cap hit under the new CBA - that would have released one good, but soft and overrated player to make room for the type of players you are looking for. Enforcers are really overrated, especially ""fighting specialists" in today's game. They fight (usually the other team's enforcer), sit for 5 - maybe raise the adrenaline for another 5 then it's business as usual. big deal. But you need big tough guys on your squad so that every shift is covered, yes absolutely and they will have to make changes to win the prize but I don't think this group is as inept as you make it sound..
@stan jonathan true dat!
@stan jonathan i agree with you 100% once dubinkski and prust and a couple of others left so did the grit and soul. package some of these of these guys and bring in some hard nose players. If it means loosing a rookie or two with pyatt or asham and kreider, what a fucking joke he is,. Look at the bruins there a tough hard nose team that puts up with no bs.
Nash=ARod face facts were not winning a cup with this group of forwards
@stan jonathan Although I do belive they need some time to get comfortable within the new system, I couldn't agree more about Sather. He must go .... Change of system will NOT make scorers out of players that are not skilled and have no scoring ability. They have one pure goal scorer who is a legit #1 line player. Also agree this team needs to get some grit and fight. Our third line is soft. If the third line is going to be soft would rather it then be with some skill -- Miller, Fast, Hrivik, Lindberg .. hell I'd even throw Kreider into the mix. Over 82 games I'd be they all outscore Boyle and Pyatt COMBINED!
Don't get me wrong ... Not frustrated with the team after one game. Just done with Boyle and Pyatt. Would rather have Asham in the lineup over Pyatt and Boyle.
@stan jonathan ive been looking at the total sum of parts that the rangers have and what other teams have. good teams. and for once i gotta admit, im starting to slide over to the "sather has to go" group. im tired of the washed up first round experiments that have been cast off by so many other teams. im sick of the parade of 3-4 liners coming through. im tired of the parade of soft defensemen. maybe all you sather haters have a point. i dont know.
@ATCRyan DZ for a top 6 winger...
@Wallace1 Probably made out of the same soft stuff he's made out of.
@Free Lindberg the problem from my perspective is again there is no toughness up front. the goaltending and d will be fine if not awesome given a little time. the forwards are a bunch of panzies
@Free Lindberg That's a great point.
A) Winnipeg has been looking to move him a couple times (because of his attitude... not his talent) but obviously they aren't moving a 22 year old forward such as him unless they get fair return.
B) They need defense, and a guy like MDZ is perfect for their system (we don't like him, but he is a young offensive minded dman which is what Winnipeg is looking for.
Then Boyle gives them a third line center that can kill penalties, and brings veteran leadership to their team.
I said a second round pick, but truth is it may take a first to snag him... If we were offering a first too, it would be more than a fair trade.
C) I dont really care about his attitude, and in fact I think we need someone like that in the locker room... I think we need someone to shake it up in the locker room. Obviously only to a certain extent, but Miller is the closest thing we have to a cocky player, and I think Kane will bring some attitude to the Rangers that we desperately need.
If Sather can work out the cap situation, this would be an unbelievable move for us, we would have a top line winger that is 22 years old who is signed for 5 years.... He could play with Nash for those years, and with Stepan in between that would be some line...
@ATCRyan Kane is 5.25 for the next 5 years and he is 22... so that is a steal. DZ is at 2.55, Boyle is at 1.7, and getting rid of Pyatt is another 1.55.... plus get rid of Asham another 1 million. That would leave plenty of space to bring up Lindberg as well
@Free Lindberg I read on TSN today that the Ducks are looking for a young D in return for a young F. If we can get a player like Silvferberg or Etem in return for DZ, id be down for that.
@KevinDeLury @Free Lindberg With a speedy pair like Boyle and Pyatt out there how can we go wrong? Boyle is great on pk but to find the only guy on the team slower than him to partner with just boggles the mind. Once they got tired it was agony to watch. Had to hope it was shot over the glass by mistake or something...
