...we got our first glimpse of what the team can do under AV and I got to tell you, I like it. Torts was always known for stressing a tough forecheck, but last night was probably the best forechecking effort I've seen from this team since the 2012 playoffs. Led to turnovers and offensive opportunities.
...now we have to hope AV doesn't pull a Torts and changes up the line-up tonight. Too complete of an effort to mix things up.
...i also think getting the win against a top tier team like the Kings is significant as well. Should be an extra shot of confidence for a team who was in need of something positive.
Here's more post game from the players...
Don't know if anyone mentioned it, but Ash had a great fight last night too. Much needed show of a backbone by this team...
I just watched a few blueshirts united videos and I just get a very unsettling feeling about Jim Cerny. also you can see it from the players too. kinda like they're afraid he's gonna show them pictures of him in a teletubbies mask and nothing else. I know this is unrelated but I just had to float that out there.
What excites me most about the win last night was that the Rangers actually outplayed the Kings. That's something we haven't seen a lot of in the last few years. Even in 11/12, a lot of the wins involved being outshot and outpossessed while collapsing on D and relying on consistently high levels of goalie play.
lot of positives last night. Completely different team from last week when the Kings owned them. Girardi scared me w/ that hand over causing a goal but otherwise they were great!
I really like av as a coach for this team. you can see that he doesn't get rattled and that should trickle down tithe players. he's so kind and generous with reporters and really seems like a likeable guy. hopefully he can have success here and be our coach for years to come.
Maybe it's because we had 4 contributing lines last night but I felt like del zotto was invisible. I hate ragging on him but I felt stralman made better plays and stick handled better. Maybe avs plan is to have him as a bargaining chip for cap space?
I watched both games completely and the change between Phoenix and LA is night and day. This road trip to start the season should help them bond as a team and buy into AV's system. It helps to have a coach who came from the west to game plan for teams who the rangers haven't played in over a year. But I want to see the same effort again tonight in San Jose.
I only watched the 1st period, so I could have missed things, but am I the only one thinking that Dorsett might be in danger of losing his spot before Pyatt? I know he's an agitator and serves a purpose, and i think AV's been trying to use him on the PK, too, but I really haven't seen much from him offensively, or defensively for that matter.
@TheNYRBlog my son was at the game and said Boyle played a great game along the boards digging pucks out all night
@TheNYRBlog was great to see them on the attack with a late 2-goal lead instead of collapsing. D-men involved. Loving that style
Tonight is going to be very telling about the Rangers. Back to back, against in my opinion a top 5, if not top 3, team in the NHL. Sharks are a very solid team, and with niemi playing well could be the best out west. Have to stay out of the box and play really strong tonight.
@TheNYRBlog yep some did but it was a strange game..couple of friendly posts...seemed to be alot of missed calls cally,also interf. missed
@TheNYRBlog and they shot the puck!
@TheNYRBlog They didn't forecheck under Renney....at all...
Happens all the time..they play untouchable one game than the next they come out soft as shit...Dropping this one against the sharks tn
@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG Jim Cerny is like the creepiest guy I've ever seen.
@calithirteen - yeah that was Pyatt on the turnover, though Sam and Joe never placed the blame where it belonged (oriinally saying it was Richards)
@calithirteen I thought that was a combo of Richards and Pyatt with the giveaway.
@Jercooks845 Isn't him being invisible a good thing?
while dz has had his glaring mistakes I don't think he was a problem lastnight. I think he was pretty good. I liked some of his passes and his choices. I think Girardi has been more of a problem than dz so far. I can think of a few big mistakes he's made that have led to big scoring chances going the other way. but I agree he can be a bargaining chip if needed.
@johnnyb3910 I really like Dorsett's game. He's firmly a support player, though. He's never going to wow you but always brings it -- makes subtle plays both offensively and defensively, is physically present always and is a suprisingly good skater.
@richeypow Boyle was easily one of the Rangers best players last night.
@PATR2014 Two of the Rangers goals were flukey. Team needs to start finishing.
@ggoz83 That always helps.
@TheNYRBlog Disregard. Read that wrong. Lack of sleep.
@weregnalose Still nice to see what the team is capable of.
@Free Lindberg Glad I prefaced that with "I only watched the first period", and glad to see him contirbuting in some fashion. Seems like he's got the "agitator" skills working fine. Now if only our PP could convert...
@BlueSeatBlogs LOL! I feel you.
@FREE MASHINTER seriously kev, free mashinter? lmao
@johnnyb3910 @Free Lindberg He actually made a great play on a penalty kill late in the game. I believe stralman lost his stick making things worse. Dorsett pinned two kings players up against the blue line boards n since he couldn't clear the zone, held the puck long enough for stralman to skate to the bench n get another stick. Afterwards, they cleared the zone n killed off the penalty. Great game! I'm just not feeling Pyatt on the PK! What the hell!
@TheNYRBlog @BlueSeatBlogs To your point Jagr admitted publicly that he willfully changed his game for the first time in Boston last year.. He was told forecheck or else!
@TheNYRBlog Everything I need from last night but don't have time to look up this morning. Thanks for making my day easier, Kevin.
@BlueSeatBlogs LOL! Probably would have been a tough sell for Renney to get guys like Jagr and Nylander to forecheck hard.
@TheNYRBlog You know it's bad when Renney looks like Torts
