...at least AV refused to blame travel. So there's that.
...interesting to hear AV defend his system by criticizing the team for not being able to make "tape to tape" passes. And you know what, he's right. If this team can't succeed at the basics of hockey, how the hell can they properly run a system? Trust me, there's plenty to blame AV for, but it's hard to criticize the system when the players, for some reason, don't have the capacity to implement it. At this point you have to think the players are just over thinking this thing.
Here's player reaction...
...yeah, Hank looks like a guy who really wants to be here right now. Although, he's just as responsible as anyone.
...never a good thing to hear your Captain say he doesn't have an explanation.
...Brassard was more noticeable in this interview than he was on the ice. Which isn't a good thing.
Eaxactly its early and they have not played together in this system as a team all.pre season. 4 games in and we are giving up?CHECK BACK IN 3WEEKS WHEN WE ARE BACK CLOSE TO.TOP.OF THE STANDINGS!!
@TheNYRBlog Well now I think we're starting too realiz it's the players not the coaches. Vancouver isn't struggling with Torts new system...
let's not blame ulfie yet, he's got to try and learn the system too. prust, tortorella & messier didn't lose much passion there, ay. i don't care what system you play you can still body check. last and foremost, i know genander @ the wolfpack is supposed to be a good teacher but is he teaching passion, toughness and desire?
So, those of the commenters who were dismissing the poor play of the Rangers in the preseason games were wrong. I take no satisfaction in being right. No amount of rationalization can explain the two miserable, humiliating performances of an uncoordinated, incompetent bunch of millionaires. I would be totally in favor of a "pay-for-performance" system, in which the players are paid at intervals on the basis of their actions on the ice. I should hope that contract talks between Lundquist and the Rangers will reflect the pathetic level of his recent play. Of course, he was not helped on ice by his dreadful teammates. Disgusting!
I'm not a hockey expert, so I can't analyze what they are doing as many of you can. I do have this thought though. It sort of shook me up last night reading some the comments on Twitter. A lot of talk about this team having no pride, etc. I just don't see it that way. I always go along with the assumption that they are trying to do their best, and that no one feels more badly about the outcome than they do. I can't say what is technically wrong, but it is extremely early to be giving up on them. They need their fans now more than ever. :)
I find it hard to believe a team that for the most part the core of which is still here and went to a conf final 18 months ago, win a game 7 on road 5-0 and went to 2nd round 5 months ago (same exact team that's out there now) forgot how to play hockey all of a sudden. Let's remember it is a new system. Being on the road in what seems like an eternity already, and having to start against cup contenders I might add is not easy. I would think we will resemble more of the team who beat LA and outchanced them 21-11 than the team in SJ and Anaheim. No slouches by any means. If we can be 500 coming home get Nash and hags back we can get some momentum at home. This 2 game stretch will be forgotten come mid November. Patience my friends.
Although not surprising considering our GAA right now, went over to NHL.com and sorted player statistics by +/-. On the last page, players 571-599, are 8 Rangers, the worst offender being Del Zaster, tied with 2 other players at -7, Mike Weber of the Sabres is the only player worse at -8.
@TheNYRBlog Kev soon it will be time for krider miller hrivik, Haley manshiter
Our defensemen have been atrocious this year thus far. With that said why hasn't anyone mentioned Ulf as someone to blame here. I mean he's supposed to be in charge of the defense right?
@TheNYRBlog Kev, like av but let's face it with players we have we can't play a puck procession system. Need speed for that.
Big growing period right now for Ryan Callahan. I think you can tell from some of his answers that he realizes some of these guys just know how to say the right things, but leaned on Tort's to motivate them. Just because he's pegged as a quiet leader or passive doesn't mean he can't change. Hopefully he can channel his passion and drive into motivitating the other guys in the room.
Too bad we don't have Mess in the organization any more to take the young captain aside and give him some pointers.
Also, Hank is doing wonders for his value in a contract year with his play. Thought i was watching the mighty ducks last night when Del Shitzo collided w/ Pouliet and Hank dove out leaving an empty net for Del shitzo to slide on his in front of.
Flipping between this game and the Giants last night made me drink quite hard last night! I've just about had it with this team and it's lack of effort on even the basics. 2 different coaches, 2 different styles and 2 different systems with the same result. Guaranteed Torts is laughing his ass off in vancouver. Time to start trading. Del zotto is done. i dont care if they cut him and he ends up selling pretzels outside of the garden because who the hell is going to trade for a defense-man who spends more time falling on his ass, then actually stopping the puck. This team is a joke right now! Let's hope Sather responds quickly like he did when firing torts instead of waiting till February to start making moves.
I hate Michael del zotto.
Also if these guys weren't putting in the effort to become a team with Torts at the helm... A more passive guy like AV isn't going to help these players become a team
Also scary when your Captain basically admits that there are guys on the team not giving the effort. I'm not exactly sure who's not giving the effort versus who's just not smart enough to play this style. Most of these guys spent years just throwing their bodies in front of pucks and getting into the shooting lanes. There's a little more to think about now. Tortorella kept them all on a short leash, now they have to be accountable for their own play and virtually all are failing at that.
@TheNYRBlog agreed. although av may be too passive for this group of brats
@TheNYRBlog the good news is that there's no game tonight.
@TheNYRBlog The Rangers players are acting like AV is a substitute teacher n the mean teacher (Torts) is out,Correct, not AV's fault at all..
@TheNYRBlog agreed. The play in front of net haa sucked which isnt really system specific. Its hockey 101 at this point
@TheNYRBlog We certainly have shown we can't play in the Western Conference
@TheNYRBlog can't blame new coaches system when Vancouver have a new coach same time and r 3-2... Old excuse by now, need to get it together
@TheNYRBlog I LITERALLY just said this same exact thing to my dad on the phone. Who are these guys? WTF!!!!
it ain't rocket science....AV can't run the same system he ran in Vancouver and expect the same results....for years the Canucks have had a VASTLY SUPERIOR roster. This year is no different. Not every club will be successful but our GM has failed miserably to keep this team competitive for most of his tenure with a bigger budget than most.
Following the Blueshirts ain't easy but we'll alway have '94...
@ATCRyan I agree but ultimately, these are not playing up to the level they are capable of. They played great vs the Kings n have tanked ever since. I don't understand
@MichelleLowman Mind blowing.
@lauriemoss25 That I can agree with. Plenty to criticize AV for so far.
@BroskieNation When you can't get it done under two completely different coaching styles I think it's time to look in the mirror.
@NYR_Fan_Jay Exactly. Not sure we've even seen the system yet.
@jaywnj Almost crapped myself when Sam asked AV if he needed to simplify the system so the players could understand it.
@AveryYesBettmanNo I'd agree with you, but I don't think we've even seen the team run the system yet. These breakdowns are basic stuff. Girardi even said after the game that there's nothing complex about what AV is trying to implement.
@TheNYRBlog @MichelleLowman It happens. Nerves, new system, etc...Its not an excuse at the elite level, but I can see how when you are worrying about one facet of the game so much you tend to slip on others. Playing in college this happened every once and a while (then again, its college hockey, not Pro). Just hope it doesn't keep up, apparently they think the "open" offense memo is meant for the other team lol.
@TheNYRBlog Like Larry Brooks said, there not changing coaches anytime soon.More "efforts"like this & theres gonna b a fire sale on this team
@TheNYRBlog Torts reaction would have been an all timer to those q's after the last 2 nights
@TheNYRBlog true that
@jaywnj With the way the players tuned him out, it wouldn't have mattered.
